Long press if you want it has to be a mod put in services.jar you have to add that mod in there at least and I think framework-res and jar you can look at some code for another rom and maybe modify for what you want ?

i didn't really understand you answer but i looked into different launchers and the one more helpful, as far as remapping, was nova launcher but i still keep looking and i found that slim bean JB has all remap in its settings under hardware key.
it may also be on cm9? idk
anyways i just wanted to list everything i found just in case someone was wondering how to remap keys

He is most likely on an ICS build which does not have that function. It opens the browser, I tried today to change the function in ICS Sense but the only change I made was to make it TAB rather than browser. But there are many threads around here to explain this, maybe one could go at it with a text editor to achieve what they want?

Wish I knew what functions they changed the keys to but TAB suites me better because I don't use the www/com function at all

Haha. Probably should have put that. I'm running the latest version of CM9.

I second the request in this thread, only less bitterly.
I became a little hooked on that function I guess! I'd also love to turn the slide out keyboard's back key to a keypress delete or something and a long press back so I don't lose XDA posts once in a while!

I have created this little app out of frustration with the hardware buttons on my Galaxy S3. I don't really mind the back, menu, or Home button implementations but I am really annoyed because of the implementation of the recent apps. On a Galaxy S3, we all know that one has to press the hardware home key for a while to open the recent apps view. This greatly hampers multitasking and, honestly, it even turned me off of the idea of multitasking using the recent apps view.
But I recently used a friend's Galaxy Nexus and found that the recent apps view was not only very convenient to switch between apps, but also very effective. And the convenience was amplified by the fact that the recent apps button was ever present on the phone's screen. So I decided to implement something similar for my phone.
I came across STANDOUT , a library made by Mark Wei (xda member pingpongboss) which perfectly suited my needs for this app and made creating this app a breeze. Thanks a lot Mark!!
So here is my app called "FLYING RECENTS". It is a floating button that does nothing but open the default recent apps view. It is draggable via the handle attached at its bottom, it is semi-transparent so as to not be too distracting, and it can be closed by clicking its notification in the notification shade. Go ahead. Give it a try. I am sure people with hardware buttons will appreciate the utility of this app once they use it. Do offer suggestions if any, and I will try to incorporate them into the app as much as i can.
Made for a Galaxy S3. Ideal use case is for phones like Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4, etc. All phones with hardware buttons running Android 4.0+ benefit from this app.
UPDATE: Version 1.01 includes a better looking drag handle. Thanks to pratyush997 for the suggestion!!
UPDATE: Version 1.02 includes a transparent notification bar icon.
I'm thrilled I was looking for something like a long time ...

Thanks for your response. I hope you enjoy using this. If you don't mind, hit thanks, and tell people about this app. Everybody deserves the ease of convenience don't they?
Very very nice, been looking for a while for something like this.
I have a suggestion Don't u think it would be more practical and less obstructive if it was more like a gesture based launcher (like swipepad, sidebarpro).
We set it up that once u swipe from the home button upwards the screen, it will launch the recent apps. I've tried many apps but none were perfect for that simple task.
Thx for the nice app, would be appreciated if u can consider my suggestion.

I have been working really hard to implement this sort of a possibility that you have described. If I have any success in the implementation, I will surely update and post here.
Do hit thanks and tell your friends about this app. Cheers

Trust me it was my original aim to make this app just like that (i.e. dragging the button itself) but I cannot for the life of me make it draggable. That is why I had to include the handle. Feel free to suggest any coding workarounds if you can. It would greatly benefit me.
Useful app! May I suggest the addition of floating 'back', Home', 'menu' buttons as well?

As far as I can tell, adding the back button is not possible without rooting. But i will get back with the home button implementation soon.
I have been spoiled by running 4.2.2 on a Capitvate using Slimbean Dark ROM.
Anyone know of an app that would add REBOOT, SCREENSHOT or possibly PROFILE to the POWER BUTTON function comes up?

How am I in the wrong forum. Perhaps you misread my statement. I was spoiled by the custom ROM on my CAPTIVATE - but am looking to duplicate it on the XT926
My bad, yes I have misread your statement... Hoping someone has an answer for that on XT925/6 all the tuts I can find are for Sense/Touchwiz devices don't really know if it would be possible to follow the same tut for us
No worries. Can't tell you how much I love this phone. Just sorry to see a vacuum of non-beta custom roms...
Hi
I found this out by just playing around trying to change my hardware keys. I know this works with aosp 4.2.2 ROMs but I haven't tested it with sense ROMs yet. To change appswitch key to open menu go into /system/usr/keylayout/synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl and change key 249 from appswitch to menu. Will try on sense ROMs soon and let y'all know if it works on them also. I will also try remapping other hardware keys as well just to see if they work.
OK it works on sense ROMs and all the hardware keys can be remapped. Also a reboot is needed to apply changes
Thats cool but every rom has that capability built in. Even sense roms

Good point. I stand corrected! ^_^
Is there an app that will work with Sense 6 to change the nav bar buttons?
I am looking for buttons that are out of the ordinary. Not wanting to just change color or size.

Thanks guys. It worked perfect.
Does Softkeyz allow you to change the functionality of the buttons or just the look? I want to swap the back and recent apps keys on my M8.

Or you can can the image in systemui
You really don't wanna use GravityBox... mainly because the dev don't really like anyone who's not using a Nexus. Sense Toolbox will change the functionality of the navbar buttons... GravityBox will too, but a bunch of things don't work. Ironically, on the Galaxy S3, more stuff in GravityBox works in TouchWiz than CM. Yep, even in CM, which is as close to AOSP as you can get without running a Nexus, stuff in GB is broken. Anyway, unless GB has something real special ST doesn't... I'd just stick with ST, provided you're running a Sense ROM, that is. If you're GPE, take your chances with GB. Might work, might not, not sure on that count.
What about adding extra nav bar soft keys? I am used to owning Nexus phones but loving the new HTC so I went for the M8 this time with no regrets. So far the only thing i am missing is the ability to add up to 6 softkeys. Thanks.
Not in Sense. Various custom ROMs have the ability to add or remove soft keys.
If you really wanna stick with Sense and you don't hate Pie, LMT Launcher (it's not really a launcher) has a decent Pie you can use.
