[Q] Stock ROM says it's custom. How to fix that? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody!
I got a P3110 with TMH (T-Mobile Hungary) CSC code. I upgraded it to stock 4.1.1 with multi CSC via Odin, rooted with cf-auto-root, switched CSC to XEH, and now my device says it's custom ROM. Update check said it was a modified device. I tried Triangle Away, now Update check doesn't even come up with error or anything.
KIES displays it as XEH, so does it in the EFS folder except the prodcode.dat. It contains: GT-P3110TSATMH
How can I match it up the product code with the CSC? How can I fix the stock/custom paradox?
Thanks.

stock/custom paradox is not a paradox! rooted device are already customized! the root itself makes it not working with any official update method. you cannot remove that!
so you need to download the rom you want from sammobile.com and flash it via odin (note: you will lose root and nearly any other data on the phone so do a backup them, and the flash counter will incrase)
if you want to stick to TMH software chose their version from sammobile. then re-root it with cf-auto-root

Then I'll stick to XEH. Thanks!

That's not true. It's a bit more complicated than that.
If you run stock and rooted, with 'su" enabled, the tablet runs a tracker that will see root requests that happen during boot and will mark your device as "Custom". Simply installing applications (which customizes the device by adding new files) won't trigger the "Custom" flagging. Installing a nonstandard kernel probably will be detected.
If you don't modify any of the stock applications, and disable "su", the device won't detect that it's rooted. I use SuperSU and use it's capability to disable/hide "su". So far, the tablet seems satisfied that it's stock.

You are right i do not think about that because i use chainsDD SuperUser .

I use SuperSU, too, and I froze bloatware apps with Titanium. Not more modification. I thought that the problem was caused by the non-matching CSC/product code.

[Q] complete procedure for root/unroot for samsung galaxt tab2 p3100

Can anyone please help me in rooting samsung tab2 p3100. I am new to this root method can i get detail procedure for that.
My device : Samsung tab2 p3100 (India)
Android : 4.1.1 (already in the tab, not updated)
Baseband : P3100DDCLK1
Is this root reversible so that my warranty of tab is not affected and how can i unroot.
Rooting procedure can be found in my guide (link in signature). It's easy to unroot if you don't mind wiping data.

To remove Root:
This Root Remover has been tested with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" P3100 (tested on jellybean)
REQUIREMENT: A rooted Tab 2.
•After you download this file, move it the root of your external SD card( /mnt/extSdCard ). This is the micro sdcard you insert in tablet slot. Your /mnt/sdcard folder is internal memory (not recognized in CWM recovery).
•Reboot into CWM (recovery) using Quick Boot app or
•Power OFF your tablet, disconnect from computer and restart in recovery (CWM) by pushing and holding POWER & Volume DOWN/LEFT buttons at same time. When Samsung Tab 2 logo appears, you can release power button but continue holding volume button for a few more seconds. Note: If you've done this on other Samsung devices, you will notice that it takes longer before blue CWM v5.5.0.4 text appears ... just be patient.
•Once you are in recovery, use volume button (UP/DOWN/LEFT OR RIGHT) to move around and POWER button to select an option.
Select install zip from sdcard. Choose Root_Remover file you already copied to root of sdcard.
When unrooting is finished, choose reboot system now from CWM menu.
NOTE-By downloading and using this file you understand and agree that you bear all responsibility for the use and anything it may do to your tablet.
DOWNLOAD-
Root_Remover.zip (h--p://www.mediafire.com/?ty54o6lah25w41d)
Replace (--) with tt.
For Root (tested on jellybean):
Use chainfire root its d best i have it.
U can google it or find it on xda search.
Dont use the above method to remove the chainfire root as it can be easily removed from its modified superuser application but it works as any other root and is superb!
Enjoy,
Kunal
Dont forget to hit the thanks button!!

Hey amit i have edited the link in my post n its now working. Yeah dats the correct package use odin to flash it. Dont use this root remover on cf autoroot. Cf autoroot has the option to completely remove the cf root in its own menu. After u have rooted your device, use a root checker(available on play store for free) to check that you device is fully rooted. When u root or flash a custom rom or do anything fishy with ur device using odin, ur warranty gets void as there is a counter in the tab 2 which keeps a record of how many times u have flashed ur firmware wid a custom rom or rooted it or done something fishy. To get your warranty back, use the TriangleAway app (another miracle by chainfire) to reset the flash counter to zero which means u get ur warranty back. Its paid on playstore but is free on his xda page. It only works if ur device is rooted. Nd yes u can move apps to sd after rooting.
Good luck n happy flashing

unrooting problem

As you said, I unrooted my tab.
Earlier, I was using official stock 4.1.1
Then I rooted my phone and updated it to cm10 nightly
But that cfw was not good enough (no offense)
To go back to my old stock, I restored my stock which I backedup while updating to cfw via rom manager
Now I wanted to unroot and used the app advised by you
But now when I'm tryin to update my tab using OTA by going under Software Update option in Settings, it is saying following message:
YOUR DEVICE HAS BEEN MODIFIED. SOFTWARE UPDATES ARE NOT AVAILABLE
how to fix this?
Factory reset should fix the issue.

Hey man, sorry for extremely late reply.
To fix this (Do this after unroot only) just connect your tab to kies and then it should recognize your tab and from there you can do the update and after the update you can follow the same root method to root your device. Good luck
PS-I was not able to perform the ota update because of the same problem and used kies to do the same.

It's stable and Official. Only one thing is weird, if you try to set "write permissions" to the "system" in file manager, the phone won't let you do it and it'll reboot automatically... New SEAndroid feature...
Other than that, ALL OK, I'm using quite few apps with root access and all of them works fine, including restoring apps and data..
enjoy and report any issues
Sorry, but what does this do, does it root your device?
If you do this you don't have to do CF-Auto-Root?
Or, just when necessary, revert back to stock ROM?
And can someone explain to me what's Odin? I came from One XL.
After doing this, you still have to use CF-Auto-Root right?
Because this isn't permanent is it? Meaning you can't flash other ROMs etc unless you do CF Auto-Root?

Triangle Away Question

So, I've got JB 4.1.2 and am rooted. No custom ROM. (I think I used Chainfire's method, but can't remember exactly. If anybody can tell me if there's a way to verify that, it would be helpful.)
I'd like to be able to get OTA updates and have read several threads about Triangle Away. Frankly, I don't really understand them, and they scare me.
So, my questions are:
1. Is Triangle Away a pretty safe thing to do? I've read about having to reset if something should happen. I don't really want to have to do that.
2. Once I run Triangle Away, is my device the way it was before I started? I keep reading about a factory reset and am not really sure what that entails.
I don't want to have to start over. I just want to keep it the way I have it and be able to install OTA updates.
Thanks in advance!

1. Yes it works pretty well for me
2. No - you're still rooted. Factory reset will make no difference.
If you're rooted then it's simple no OTA. You need to return to stock so a stock OTA can be applied.
Incidentally for my $500 device I can remember exactly what method I used to root it on every occasion that I have needed to.
1. Exynos Abuse - first root - maintained by Mobile Odin
2. Chainfire for 4.1.2 BTU
3. Chainfire for 4.1.2 XSG
---------- Post added at 12:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:36 AM ----------
Now that I think about it, I've probably done you a dis-service.
Did you even check what Triangle Away does?
It (requires root) resets the Binary flash counter so Samsung don't know you've flashed something you shouldn't have.
The things you shouldn't have flashed include
Chainfire AF
TWRP
CWM
etc
For any changes to Recovery - The Binary counter cannot be reset permanently. It will increases every time it detects a custom recovery
im thinking of rooting now as I'm not sure that Samsung are going to role out any more updates for the note 10.1 - its all quiet on that front (I have S3 to and it's quiet on that front to). So in reality it doesn't really matter about OTA (i guess). Ill make my mind up more once I have a question answered regarding root apps.

I don't understand your answer to number 2. No, it's not the same as it was before Triangle Away? It's still rooted? That is the way it was before Triangle Away.
I also don't understand this: "If you're rooted then it's simple no OTA."
What I want to know is: Will running Triangle Away on my rooted device (no custom ROM) allow me to install OTA updates (by resetting the counter), but leave my device otherwise unchanged?
from what I understood by researching this for myself (correct me if I'm wrong) , as long as you have root your device will be shown as 'custom' under device settings(even it you have no binary count ), So you won't be able to relieve OTA updates, the only way to receive OTA would be to format system , but then you would lose root, So having root AND OTA at the same time is not possible .
however,I think that apps like triangle away have a option that can hide root or something like that.I didn't read into this though
again, I'm new here as well So I'm not sure it what I said here is correct- its also a way to check if I understood

Triangle Away is used to reset the built in flash counter that Samsung can check to see if you flashed a custom recovery. Typically people flash a custom recovery as a first step in rooting their phone. So the flash counter is increased from 0, and they can tell that you're a naughty boy and have "abused" your phone - warrant void. Triangle away DOES NOT alter the fact that you then went on to root the phone. So your root status remains.
OTA updates check the status of the phone (custom), they don't check the flash counter. So Triangle Away has no effect at all on OTA updates since it doesn't effect root.
So if your phone is rooted then you CANNOT get OTA updates and TA will not help you. You have to NOT be rooted to get OTA.
To go further, you probably have to have never rooted on that particular ROM to receive OTA updates.
So - to be clear
1. If you want OTA - then use TA to clear flash counter and then use ODIN to flash the latest stock rom for your country - this will erase root and place stock recovery.
2. If you want root then just face the fact that you cannot have OTA
I just checked my flash counter - it's 1 because i have TWRP installed. I can reset it to 0 with TA, but it just goes back to 1 all the time that TWRP is there.
loribuono.... can you tell us what version or build rom you have?
Please correct me if I'm wrong guys.........
As loribuono is running a stock rooted rom they could reset flash count with Triangle Away.
Then use odin to install the latest rom for his device from http://samfirmware.com/
This should put them back to factory and my experience has been that no data will be lost.
Then run update to see if you truly have all the latest updates.
Then root again.
This should work correct??????
Oh..... remember to make a backup in TWRP or CWM before doing any of the above and you will be OK.

If you are rooted and want to remain rooted, you do not want OTA updates. Download firmware from sammobile and install via mobileODIN. Set to inject root and MobileODIN.

It looks like this is the latest for yours.

Oh... It's that easy to upgrade the firmware with mobile odin. Thank you so much for the tips. I'm going to root the device and forget about OTA. I could just do with knowing a number of useful and key 'root apps' now too. I guess triangle away and mobile odin are essential.
Thank you so much for the advice

loribuono.... can you tell us what version or build rom you have?
Please correct me if I'm wrong guys.........
As loribuono is running a stock rooted rom they could reset flash count with Triangle Away.
Then use odin to install the latest rom for his device from http://samfirmware.com/
This should put them back to factory and my experience has been that no data will be lost.
Then run update to see if you truly have all the latest updates.
Then root again.
This should work correct??????
Oh..... remember to make a backup in TWRP or CWM before doing any of the above and you will be OK.

My build version is JZO54K.N8013UEUCMA3
My counter is set to 5, because I had at one time put the German ROM on this thing. I went back to stock, updated to JB and then rooted. That's where I'm at.
I don't understand most of this stuff, like when someone says "set to inject root and MobileODIN." Set what? What is "inject root?" It's the terminology I don't get.
Not to mention the conflicting information... you can.. you can't. Still don't know if what I want is possible.

Root your device using CF-Autoroot.
Install Triangle Away from the play store. Run that to reset your custom binary counter.
Reboot.
Now use the built-in SuperSU to disable SU. Now reboot again.
Settings/About Device/Status should now show "Device status: official".
Note that if you get any OTA update it's very likely to remove root status.
If you need to use root access for anything, use SuperSU to unhide (re-enable) su and you should be fine. The device may change back to "Device status: Custom", but disabling su again will reset it after a reboot.
Well regarding unlocking bootloader stuff and ota updates,
if u have really decided to root your tab then you should say but to sammy stock rom , I mean there are more beautiful roms available with features google hasnt even put in 4.3 yet. My advice , if u really want to root , dont use stock samsun rom wid it. Otherwise I dont see the point in rooting and waiting for ota updates.
Unrooting. Unrooting becomes easier once you have rooted ur device once. Only an addition will be using triangle away to reset the flash counter, boot up wid ur stock rom and flash counter reset, ur device will be in warranty again.
I hope that helped.
I am not thinking about using a custom rom because for that i will have to unlock my bootloader and my warranty goes , because all ways of relocking the bootloader have one dis-advantage - after the process it will show re-locked in the stock recovery !!
So just thinking of rooting at the moment .....

Yes, since you'll lose superuser when the OTA is pushed, so you'll have to go through it all over again if you don't wait.
Hopefully you'll get 4.2.2 soon. Us here in the USA never got 4.1.2 so I know how you feel being forced to wait.

does this method really work? like will the success rate be a 100%? as I am also waiting for the 4.2.2 update that Samsung Philippines will be pushing anytime soon.
one more thing. every time I do OTA updates, do I need to re-root my tab again after the process in order to gain superuser rights again?

Yes bro , this method actually works !! I just rooted my tab last night .
This link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957160 gives a detail description of everything needed for the process !!
And one more thing before you install a OTA update you will have to
un-root , download the update and then re-root the tab if you want it over the air !!(p.s. - you can always flash the firmware from sam mobile if you have root)
But dont worry , with cf auto root you can root your device in 30 secs , and also un-root the device in less than 1 min !!
It's very easy .....

I dont know more about the pro features but i know that to update through OTA updates you need to unroot your device and bring it back to the stock condition (firmware, rom etc. ) . So you have to UNINSTALL superSU .....

Don't get too excited, lockscreen widgets on Samsung ROMs (4.2+) require you to have an unsecure lockscreen, (swipe unlock).

I found the the best method for you and all the people who want to get 4.2.2 ... Just download [ROOT]MOBILE ODIN PRO and then select the firmware you want to flash . after you select the firmware press on the keep root option and then you will get 4.2.2 rooted !!!
And i dont know why but after i did the above process , the device status in about phone shows "STOCK" !!! Just a miracle for my warranty !!

For the record i too got the 4.2.2 firmware . I dont keep a pass on my screen because its sometimes tiring to enter it everytime i want to open my tab. Instead i lock the apps that i dont want people to see.
And yeah i agree samsung has not done much good with the 4.2.2 update , be it the large fonts or the notification bar ... But yeah the increased ram and the new customizations in its system apps and launcher are surely some good reasons to update the tab to 4.2.2 !!

Root ATT S4 On 5.0.1

Hey guys! im Cole. Im new around here .
Anyways I managed to fix my phone from a soft brick using the 5.0 OTA Update and decided to root the phone.
Also This Didn't trip Knox for me. Im on 5.0.1
NOTE: I am not responsible if you happen to brick/Break your ATT GALAXY S4 (I337)I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WORKS ON THE I337M
Anyways on with the rooting tutorial:
Ok, On your S4 I recommend that you have the OTA Package which you can get from Here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934552137
And You should have at least 50% battery life left.
Ok. Go and download Kingroot V4.5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
Install it. It should say that root access is unavailable. Click on Try to root.
It takes around 3 to 5 minutes to get root access. once done you should see at the top Root Successful or something like that.
If it fails I suggest that you either try again or just give up on rooting your phone.
But since ATT Has a LOCKED Bootloader we cant install a recovery i think. Anyways I hope you guys found this tutorial working and have fun rooting.
Oh yeah I forgot: Thank You Kingxteam for providing us with kingroot

Working Ha ? I Am Lollipop 5.0.1 .. I Need To Root Now .. Please Help Me
Can anyone confirm that this works? I remember someone posted a kingoroot here in the att s4 forums and it put a lot of junk on the phone

It works. I'm using it to edit my coc host file. I'll add some screen shots to this post to confirm that this works. Oh yeah. Kingroot just installs purify which I removed like any other app
I'm using my phone so I just looked up photo uploader.
I can't upload images yet since I'm new but this does work as long as it's the newer kingroot I had to reflash the 5.0update last night because I installed a recovery and as all ways it fails due the locked bootloader so I tried to root again and it works fine.

I ended up finding them on my own. Kingroot mobile didn't work but the desktop version rooted. I'd rather the binary was SuperSU for compatibility nags with titanium but it works.

Thanks! I rooted my AT&T I337 running stock 5.0.1. App method did not work. I used the kingroot desktop program from the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
If you don't like the kingroot su binary, check out super sume in the play store. It replaces kinguser with supersu. Costs $1. Well worth it imo.
Edit: I'm on build OC4.

Cool story.
But, this is so simple. Instead of having to flash this and that with flashfire and safestrap, you can just go straight from lollipop, use a one click root tool, and then use another one click app to switch to SuperSU and remove the other. It's simplicity, compared to keep root method, is great. Now, if we could just get someone to figure out how to do it with one step, we'll be golden. Many are thinking there is still no way to root straight from lollipop. This works. So, if these cats can do it, then another dev can figure out how to get SuperSU injected instead of Kingroot. If that can happen, then safestrap can also be updated to work with lollipop instead of having to swap kk kernel. This is progress.
edit: When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I tried several times to update to 0C4 after using this method. It failed every time. Then, I flashed the rooted 0C3 with flashfire and the update worked flawlessly. I wouldn't suggest this kingroot anymore to anyone. Cheers.

What recovery to use

Just used KingRoot to root my I337 with OC4. Took a few minutes and then took off with a percentage rapidly climbing to 100%. Unfortunately for those of us who cannot read Chinese you have to feel your way through the user interface.
Here are some notes to help (I should have grabbed screen shots and will try to do so):
Make sure your PC has the I337 drivers and they work.
Enable developer mode on the I337.
Download and install the desktop version of KingRoot.
Connect the I337 to the PC with USB. Let Windows do its handshake stuff.
Launch KingRoot, it will find the phone and give you a screen (all in Chinese) showing how to turn on USB Debug mode. For English that is in Settings | More | Developer Options. Check the USB debugging box.
Phone will ask to verify the computer RSA key, accept it.
Phone also asked twice to allow Google to check for security threats. I declined both.
KingRoot will see that it can talk with the phone and do its thing.
A few minutes later I had KingRoot and root access on my 5.0.1 OC4 phone as verified with Root Checker Basic. It has survived a power cycle with battery removal.
Added screen shots from phone. Need to get some from KingRoot.
When KingRoot has everything ready you will see some Chinese text followed by Root on a blue (IIRC) button. Click that to launch the rooting.
