What is the point of installing custom roms when safestrap limits the max memory I ca - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was extremely excited to try running a couple different roms to get my footing on one I prefer. However when I finally decided on a daily driver I quickly realized that there was no point to it as the 3 GB partition size quickly got filled up on apps alone. Am I missing something with this? What's the point of using safestrap to install new roms when my internal space is so limited? I'm back to stock right now and am much less adventurous with messing with my phones settings.

Can u not make a ROM default and delete stock image? And I'm running a ROM on slot 1 storage shows I have 6gb left and I've installed about 20 apps already.

Safestrap size limits
Bump.
I'm running stock JB and researching whether I can return to ICS, obtain root, upgrade back to JB or a different ROM
Or if I can run SS as is to use other ROMs.
Thanks

How did you get 6+ gb on rom slot 1? I'm still using stock atm. And I might stick with it only because there are no other JB roms with working hotspot.

i'm in the same boat as the OP. i got a "storage space low" message this morning and noticed only had about 100MB left in a 2g partition. how do you have 6gb left? i might just return to the stock image as well.

From what ive read since my original post, this is a droid razr hd issue that doesnt allow apps and data to be saved externally. Which blows because all roms are essentially nerfed with this memory cap.

What are the first apps you'd load on a Xoom?

I have a rooted Droid X. I know what apps I would load on that. I just got a Xoom. It is coming with 4.0.4 on it. What apps should I load first (prior to rooting)? Will most of the things that I use on my Droid X work with the Xoom? Is there something like to Voodoo Rootsaver that I would use on the Xoom? After the OTA updates on the Droid X clobbered Root and SBF ability, I've gotten VERY careful. (I didn't take the OTA )
I wouldn't load any apps prior to rooting due to the fact you have to unlock your bootloader which wipes your entire data partition.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery (I recommend TWRP because I use it on my Atrix, GS3, and Xoom) and then install the jellybean version of TeamEOS rom.

The Xoom is not listed as a supported device on the TWRP site. You are using it (trouble free)? I see a lot of people saying good things about the EOS Jelly Bean ROM. Do they have a "stable" version as well as "nightlies"? This tablet will be my "daily driver", until I get used to moving around in it. So I would like a little stability at first, otherwise I can't tell if a problem is coming from my ignorance or the ROM.
TWRP is in the development section. And I've had no problems with it.
For JB EOS there is not a "stable" but the nightlies seem to be solid from my 2+ weeks of usage.

I'll +1 that... Been using TeamEOS for over a week, no problems, and Devs are still full steam ahead on it.
For recoveries I *just* switched to Rogue Recovery (which is built on CWM). Before that I was using straight CWM.
Your OP question, if you KNOW you're gonna Root and flash a custom ROM, yeah I wouldn't load any apps until that's done. Then you can run TB or something to preserve your apps through future flashes.

Dual Boot?

I was able to find some work done on the S3 before it was unlocked but can't find anything current for the S3 and dual booting. Has anyone made any progress or is anyone working on it? There are so many awesome roms out there but it's nice to have a daily driver and a slot(s) for test roms.
Boot Manager is an incredible app that I bought when I had the Nexus. Unfortunately, it seems development is dead.

I don't think the partition that is used for roms is big enough for two

Boot Manager allows multiple roms to boot from the sd card. It works for the Nexus just wasn't updated for the S3. Seems like an experienced developer could write an app or recovery that allows roms to install and run from sd card. If locked Moto phones can do it (Safestrap), surely ours can.

Moto's rom storage location is different than ours, the entire internal or at least most of the internal is able to be written on using safe strap. And besides, restoring a nandroid backup takes the same amount of time as safe strap does to transfer the data between the 2 partitioned rom's.

You got me there. I'd throw out BootMenu but we don't have a Webtop partition, so I know that'd be shot down.
So our only hope (app wise) at this point is Boot Manager? The app description says the only Samsung phone it works on is the Nexus. Anyone know what's different about it compared to the S3 (in terms of boot partition)?
Here's a link to some Vzw S3 dual boot development but there hasn't been any activity in it since late July - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774795.

Former Boot Manager Addict in Recovery
Honestly, when i had my DX, i was a boot manager addict! you couldn't tell me there was anything wrong with it.
however...
used to have leeeetle minor bugs i had to live with due to how Boot Manager worked. and flashing themes was a pain in the A$$
today i'm in recovery, but still a flash-aholic. all i do now is just flash a rom, get it just how i like it, make a nandroid of it, and can flash back and forth all day.
tired of Synergy, flash TWRP, click on restore, and walla, i've got Paranoid Android up and running... tired of that, and next its Beans Custome Rom 11, and so forth. only annoying thing is that when you add to it after you make a nandroid, and dont upgrade, then you have to go back and add the changes.
but trust an old addict, this is waaaaaay better, and not much slower than Boot Manager!

I agree that backup/restoring isn't THAT bad but I just miss being able to boot to random roms without much hassle. I had 6 current roms on my Nexus. With BootMenu (not to be confused with Boot Manager) on my Maxx, changing between system 1 (phone rom) and system 2 (webtop rom) was literally as fast as rebooting. Just reboot and a menu came up to boot 1st, 2nd, or recovery.
I'm not complaining about my S3 by any means (best phone I've had to date) I just feel pretty sure it IS possible to dual (or multi) boot if some one with the knowledge took the challenge. Quad core, NFC, battery changeable, 4.8" screen, fully functional Jelly Beanable, LTE piece of hardware booting CM, AOPK, MIUI, TW, AOSP, [you name it] with the click of a button. Gets me excited just thinking about it. Wish I know enough to take the project on myself.

Just trying to keep this alive. Hoping the right person takes interest.

I would be interested as well in dual boot.
Synergy r73, Trinity Alpha 7 thanks to the monkey

BootManager will not work with Samsung devices that are not listed because of the way Samsung handles the boot partition.

I pointed that out on the last page. Do you know WHAT is different about the boot partition that it only works on the G'Nex and no other Sammy phones? I entered my device in manually in Boot Manager just to see if it'd work but it couldn't back up my phone rom (because of boot image).
Unless something is incredibly special about the G'Nex, perhaps the app could be adapted for other Sammys.

I dont think the external SD card swap works with 4.2.x only 4.1.x and below.
Thank you for the quick response.ive been rrading through the releases and it says they have storage supportbwith some kernels and some people are saying gl2sd, swapsd, and link2sd.what use is the sdcard to only hold pictures, movies, and music if you cant transfer apps and data to it.my opinion is google is kinda forcing people to spend money on the bigger gig tabs.well until they find a solution im going to hang on with 4.1.2.

quick question

swagger?
alright,my favorite.....another useless feature, haha.AOKP actually runs very smoothly on my gtab2.only bad thing about it is it doesnt check samsung for updates, which aint a big deal.but nice.waiting for the ripper roms download to open back up.

Move apps to SD Card

Can't really find some solid info on this subject. Some say you can only when rooted and others say no period. So can you guys who have had this tab for a while tell me which one is it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Not posible, the only way is to swap the sd card
Sent from Tab 2
it is possible, but it does require root. (speaking from a P3110 perspective)
You can use folder mount, but like every option (as far as i know), you need to be rooted. I use it because it is the only option i have found to move large game data while running 4.2.2 ROMs. If you are on stock i would root and use one of the mentioned options, like the sdcard swap script( what i used on pre 4.2x like stock firmware or aokp), or an app like gl2sd ,or whatever its called.

Possible phone dying?

mebby bad flash or rom corruption
back up your sd and take out micro sd
reset the phone to factory
flash gb stock..reset it in gb stock..run in stock without any micro sd..don't restore any data except google sync..see how that goes for a while
I was afraid you were going to say something like that. :crying:
Good side is that maybe the phone itself isn't dying.

it's a little work but shouldn't be too tough.
i my honest opinion, the best set up for someone else is prolly stock gb with zen's latest kernel (it has the later galaxy device wifi drivers that are less prone to wipe your battery)
unless of course, the phone user is a tinker that can learn to do things herself
