Dual Boot? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I was able to find some work done on the S3 before it was unlocked but can't find anything current for the S3 and dual booting. Has anyone made any progress or is anyone working on it? There are so many awesome roms out there but it's nice to have a daily driver and a slot(s) for test roms.
Boot Manager is an incredible app that I bought when I had the Nexus. Unfortunately, it seems development is dead.

I don't think the partition that is used for roms is big enough for two

Boot Manager allows multiple roms to boot from the sd card. It works for the Nexus just wasn't updated for the S3. Seems like an experienced developer could write an app or recovery that allows roms to install and run from sd card. If locked Moto phones can do it (Safestrap), surely ours can.

Moto's rom storage location is different than ours, the entire internal or at least most of the internal is able to be written on using safe strap. And besides, restoring a nandroid backup takes the same amount of time as safe strap does to transfer the data between the 2 partitioned rom's.

You got me there. I'd throw out BootMenu but we don't have a Webtop partition, so I know that'd be shot down.
So our only hope (app wise) at this point is Boot Manager? The app description says the only Samsung phone it works on is the Nexus. Anyone know what's different about it compared to the S3 (in terms of boot partition)?
Here's a link to some Vzw S3 dual boot development but there hasn't been any activity in it since late July - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774795.

Former Boot Manager Addict in Recovery
Honestly, when i had my DX, i was a boot manager addict! you couldn't tell me there was anything wrong with it.
however...
used to have leeeetle minor bugs i had to live with due to how Boot Manager worked. and flashing themes was a pain in the A$$
today i'm in recovery, but still a flash-aholic. all i do now is just flash a rom, get it just how i like it, make a nandroid of it, and can flash back and forth all day.
tired of Synergy, flash TWRP, click on restore, and walla, i've got Paranoid Android up and running... tired of that, and next its Beans Custome Rom 11, and so forth. only annoying thing is that when you add to it after you make a nandroid, and dont upgrade, then you have to go back and add the changes.
but trust an old addict, this is waaaaaay better, and not much slower than Boot Manager!

I agree that backup/restoring isn't THAT bad but I just miss being able to boot to random roms without much hassle. I had 6 current roms on my Nexus. With BootMenu (not to be confused with Boot Manager) on my Maxx, changing between system 1 (phone rom) and system 2 (webtop rom) was literally as fast as rebooting. Just reboot and a menu came up to boot 1st, 2nd, or recovery.
I'm not complaining about my S3 by any means (best phone I've had to date) I just feel pretty sure it IS possible to dual (or multi) boot if some one with the knowledge took the challenge. Quad core, NFC, battery changeable, 4.8" screen, fully functional Jelly Beanable, LTE piece of hardware booting CM, AOPK, MIUI, TW, AOSP, [you name it] with the click of a button. Gets me excited just thinking about it. Wish I know enough to take the project on myself.

Just trying to keep this alive. Hoping the right person takes interest.

BootManager will not work with Samsung devices that are not listed because of the way Samsung handles the boot partition.

I pointed that out on the last page. Do you know WHAT is different about the boot partition that it only works on the G'Nex and no other Sammy phones? I entered my device in manually in Boot Manager just to see if it'd work but it couldn't back up my phone rom (because of boot image).
Unless something is incredibly special about the G'Nex, perhaps the app could be adapted for other Sammys.

Recommended ROMs

I know there are a few of these threads in other device forums but I am posing this question to G2x owners only. What is the best ROM in your opinion for use on the G2x? I just rooted mine and have ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 running with ROM Manager in place. Now it is time to play. A little background, I am a Red Hat instructor so any ROMs a linux nerd might find useful that play nice on the G2x hardware would be awesome.
I've used weapon g2x for a while and it was pretty good. Switched to cyanogenmod 7.2 and it's also pretty good. I've heard phoenixblood is also amazing.
I recommend you just jump in and try them.

Mileage varies with different people so the best way to pick a ROM is to try them yourself. Make sure you use Titanuim Backup to help keep your apps and data through the changes.

I never knew why people use RM. Just boot into CWM. RM can **** up at times. I've even seen it brick some people's phones. Also, the G2x uses a modded CWM. So using RM wouldn't be a good idea either way.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I flashed my first ROM with ROM manager, and of course something went wrong, and the G2x wouldn't boot up. At the time, I thought I messed it all up and bricked my phone.
CWM is just a safer option. Even if the flash goes bad, you can still boot into CWM and do a nandroid restore, then it's like nothing happened in the first place. Plus after you've done it once, it's actually a really simple process to do, but now you have an added safety net.
Yupp use cwm much more stable and easier? I used rm and it soft bricked my phone. Managed to fix it tho with nvgflash

The recovery partition on Tegra 2 devices works very differently from the recovery partition on almost all other devices. Rom Manager works around this by simply installing it's own version of CWM on a portion of your system partition (I'm fairly certain that is where it places it, but I could be wrong). The Tegra architecture protects certain partitions from being written to while in anything other than recovery or NVFLASH. This prevents certain blobs from being flashed properly with RM. Also, some options can wipe the partition the RM flashed 'CWM' is on, completely removing your non NVFLASHED recovery. While it is extremely rare that this CWM could do permanent damage to the device, it's just generally safer and more consistent to use the 'real' CWM that you flash to the device with NVFLASH, as it is on the proper partition and separate from any partition that a ROM might attempt to format.
Makes sense. Goodbye Rom Manager. Thanks guys.

To flash, you must first flash this recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/?2000k5y512spft4
Then boot into recovery, wipe data/cache, go to mounts and storage and format system, then flash the rom. Gapps are here: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip . You'll probably have to mount system manually under mounts and storage before flashing gapps.
I've only tested this using gingerbread bootloaders, no idea if it works using froyo bootloaders. If you don't want to deal with the caveats of gb bootloaders, then well, fix it yourself.
what works:
radio (calls/sms/data)
touchscreen
audio
wifi
sensors
hw acceleration
software and hardware video decoding
data usage monitor (for wifi at least)
what doesn't work:
camera/camcorder
bluetooth
anything else is either broken or completely untested.

Just want to say in my years of modding Android I have been using clockwork recovery exclusively. It was the only thing available really. It worked great. I was used to the interface and I was just plain comfortable with it. Good ol trusty CWM!
So now this team win recovery becomes available and I'm like do I really need this? What's the point? Cwm works and I love it. No need to change. I can still backup, restore, flash all roms and mods with no issue. Anyway it seemed like the twrp was gaining some traction. So I figured id give it a shot.
Wow. So glad I did. I mean it seriously loads up so nicely. The interface is a lot more intuitive. It has all the same capability as cwm and then some. Its amazing. Somehow the backups and restores only take about a minute each! How do they do that?!?! Cwm takes about 15 minutes to backup or restore! And you can flash multiple zips at one time! Again that is another amazing feature.
The point of this post is just to let those of you on cwm know what you are missing. Seriously you gotta try TWRP recovery. You just download the zip from the thread in development and flash in cwm. After one reboot...boom...game changer ...you'll see

I'm from the EVO LTE side of things and CWM isn't available yet, so we're forced to use TWRP, boy let me tell you'll never go back to CWM once you use TWRP. Flashes and back-ups are done in what seems like 1 minute. The touch interface is great. GUYS JUST FLASH IT AND FORGET IT!!!

[Q] Need Advice Loading [ROM][ICS 4.0.4]Genesis - Stable Build1 - CM9/AOKP Hybrid

Hello,
This is my first post here so go easy
I am trying to install [ROM][ICS 4.0.4]Genesis - Stable Build1 - CM9/AOKP Hybrid on LG P999 with no success. I rooted using super one click and made a backup. I flashed 5.0.2.0 to the device and tried loading Mr. Apocalypse's build following every instruction to the letter. The install appears to work fine allowing me to choose options and I get to the reboot prompt fine. I answered the baseband question and opted for the harsh kernel.
After reboot I get the white LG logo then the display dims and there are light leaks of varying degree but nothing after that. I waited about 45 minutes the first time and have waited up to an hour with nothing. I have tried [ROM][CM9][JUL13-Build80] Domination with similar results. I get to the reaper kernel image after reboot and that's as far as it goes. I followed all the instructions to the letter and I have no idea what is wrong.
Anyone that has a suggestion, other than buying a better phone, please let me know. Is there another method I can try?
Thanks in advance.
With Genesis, install it with the stock kernel, then after the first boot load harsh separately. Some phones get a boot loop with harsh in Aroma

Yes, I used the command prompt on my PC to load the NVFlash image. From what I have learned reading that is the only way it will work correctly.
It is currently loading after the initial reboot and at the LG logo with the blue streak, which is encouraging.

It is currently loading after the initial reboot and at the LG logo with the blue streak, which is encouraging.

Ok, that is good that you used nvflash to get CWM on your phone, that definitely wasn't the problem. Like he said earlier, could've been the kernel.

Still on the LG splash with blue, I am now considering dancing around the device wearing a tinfoil hat and a chickenfoot necklace... It would be incredibly cool if there was a way to pull a logfile after install or see one while the install is happening.
How long should this normally take? Almost 1 hr now..

Hahahaha, I almost laughed out loud at that. Umm, have you tried just a basic rom, like CM7? Just to compare if it works or something to see if it'll flash correctly and not your phone, and it might be a bad download for genesis. Just to be sure, it is indeed a P999?

I have a GB 2.3.3 on it now that loaded no problem. I tried that two days ago after several failed attempts. I am thinking its something here though because I couldn't get the ICS Domination ROM to work on it either. The GB ROM worked great after I flashed a new baseband to it. I had the static problem before that. It just doesn't want to cooperate with ICS. And the SD card is empty as well, I wanted to make sure there was enough room for a swap file.
I pulled the battery and it boots to the second LG logo and that's where it stays. I suppose both of the ROMs I tried could have been bad downloads, but idk., this has me flummoxed beyond belief. - and yes, it is a P999 (G2x) I bought about a year ago at a t-mobile store. I think it's time for a burial at sea for this thing!
There's always a fix. Possibly a bad download. You could try another CWM, the touch one, because I know a kernel doesn't flash on the touch one, but possibly those roms might flash on a touch recovery. Idk, I'm just babbling here.

Naw, not babble... I call it thinking with the keyboard still in gear. I will try the touch CWM idea, and keep plugging away. There IS a fix, I just haven't tripped over it yet. Thanks again!
I will post an update when I have some more data to spew.

Yeah, no problem, I just wish I could think a little better, its late on a school night, so my brain is mush, haha. Well, if you still need help, keep looking for answers and ask here, I'll help, and so will others!

Thanks again, and I will not give up on this, I am way more stubborn than that. I just flashed CWM v5.8.1.3 and restoring. I am going to try to load yet another variation of ICS and report the outcome. If nothing else, I do like this touch image I just loaded!
Have you tried doing a wipe before installing a rom? I've had times where known good roms won't boot just because I didn't wipe before installing it. If your gonna give this method a go try using this to wipe it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854850
Success!
Thanks for all the advice, you guys rock!
I flashed the CWM touch and downloaded AOPK Milestone 6 4.0.4 just to see if it would load. I did the same procedure as I have with all the others and it worked. I guess it was the CWM version? IDK, Going to try to go back to Genesis tomorrow. Thanks again to each of you for all of your help and advice.
Good deal. I've been using CWM touch ever since it showed up in the forums for our phone, and I've never had a problem flashing anything

3G - 4G troubles?
I like it so far, much better than the older version I was using. I noticed this morning that I don't get any signal other than wifi. It looks like some people that did not opt for wifi were able to get signal after reinstalling with that option chosen. I did add the wifi initially, but no signal at all for data thus far. I didn't see any settings that I missed, the battery saver data stuff is unchecked and there aren't any others I could find. I am going to reinstall and hope it takes care of it.
A quick wipe and reload fixed it! :good:

[Q] Be very careful with Goo Manager...Hard Bricked my Skyrocket

I've been rooting phones, flashing roms, and even flashing others phones to different carriers for, 5-6 years now I'd say. So, I know what I'm doing. I recently started using Goo Manager to download things occasionally, and to say the least I'm screwed. Downloaded the latest twrp recovery and it automatically booted into recovery and flashed the image. Endpoint...hard bricked.
Just be careful with goo is all I'm saying. I never confirmed it to flash the download and it didn't even ask. As soon as it was done dl'ing it just did it. I knew instantly it was going to be problematic. Because it wasn't actually the twrp img for my skyrocket. I was downloading it to use on another phone and transfer to my computer. So, now I'm without a phone. Sucks..
Anyone know of a way to get into download mode without having to use Jtag? lol prolllly not

I am not sure why someone that has been doing this for years would put anything on the phones memory that doesn't go with the phone for any reason. It seems like half, if not more, of the bricks that happen are because of the wrong thing trying to be installed on the phone. Knowing that, it seems like a good idea to NEVER put anything on the phone that doesn't go with the phone, if you plan on using it or not. I guess this is just another precautionary tale for others now because if you really are hard bricked then Jtag is your option. Assuming you have already tried download mode, Odin, etc...Anyone doing this as long as you would have already known to try that stuff first...right? Good luck.
I got into a similar problem with goo manager. Ended with hard brick. Will never use goo or rom manager. Odin and twrp or cmw are the way to go. And never, ever flash anything unless you know it's for your device. That was the problem with goo, it said it was but wasn't.

I've got 5 devices successfully running Goomanager / TWRP, and none of them have had a single issue. I just make sure that what I am getting for each device is FOR each individual device.

You know you can force a reboot of the phone during the download by holding the power key or pulling the battery, right? If you knew what the file was, why didn't you do that?
I've downloaded ROM files hundreds of times through GooManager and gapps files at least a few dozen on three different phones across two platforms (Rocket and Note II). I've also flashed recoveries through it more times than I can remember. It's never once caused a problem, downloaded the wrong file, or even soft-bricked me.
I thought you couldn't brick a phone by a botched recovery flash. Because it's only writing to the recovery partition and not the system. Just what I once read anyway.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't know it was the wrong file until after it installed. It was supposed to be a gapps package that went with the Rom. I't didn't look right and I should have known better but I went with goo.
Just reinforces you should always know that what ever you flash make sure it's for your specific device.

I'm no noob. I was downloading the fIle. Not flashing it. It flashed on it's own INSTANTLY after it finished downloading. Without asking. It never did that the dozens of times I downloaded stuff before. So, there.

And yeah, I've learned to do things the old fashioned way. That's what. Based on the type of responses here, I see why some others have bad impressions of XDA members. Think whatever you want. Just sharing because it sucks. Guarantee you I know more than most of you who replied. Unless your a developer, lol.

I did copy a recovery on my old SG Europa and it was the wrong one and bricked it,lucky I was able to get a replacement. You learn from your mistakes.
