So I was just about to finally cut ties with Apple in favor of Android when my 7-year-old got pissed off at Temple Run 2 and broke my Nexus 7. Cost to repair cracked screen is very, very close to the cost of buying an entirely new unit (nothing cheaper than $150 on eBay or elsewhere that I could find). I'd also been thinking of getting a Nexus 10, but having seen how expensive the Nexus 7 would be to fix, decided to look into repair costs for the Nexus 10 and found them similarly ridiculous.
I live in a chaotic, disorganized household with at least two kids who love tablets and are extremely accident prone (when they aren't breaking stuff on purpose). It is essential that whatever tablet I buy be cheap to fix. My iPad 2, for example, has probably had half a dozen new screens in the 1.5 years I've owned it (at an acceptable $30 a pop via eBay).
Is anyone aware of a tablet that is comparable to the Nexus 7 or 10 in terms of screen resolution, processor speed, overall build quality AND has screens that are cheap to replace??
Current plan is to keep the iPad 2 limping along for a while longer, but I'd love an excuse to leave those jailbreak-sabotaging, anti-freedom jerks behind once and for all.
My advice, learn parenting first, then worry about repairing those screens, or vice versa.

Or, get a otter box case, if they break in those, i heard they pay you for a new device. Because they're 'indestructable.'

A seriosly laughed a lot at this.
Thanks

Many excellent suggestions!!!
My question though (and remember it is OK to say you don't know, if you don't know) is whether anyone is aware of a good quality tablet that is also cheap to repair.

Hello everyone, I have a question for you ... I have the opportunity to buy a Motorola Xoom or Nexus 7 (the price is the same) What do you recommend? Thanks

Xoom for a 10 inch tablet and Nexus for a 7 inch. Those two sizes are impossible to compare. It's based on your needs/wants

just buy both. I have both, and both have their advantages.

I have both, but I recommend the Nexus 7 cos it's much lighter and nicer to hold. The Xoom Wifi is a good device though.
Thanks for your advice, friends! I'm undecided because I really like the Nexus but some things less (creader card, expansion slot memory) also at this time the xoom is on offer to 245 euros...

This is the only response that makes sense. Its clear youre on a budget so both isn't an option in which case you need to do a similarities/ differences list and decide what's important to you. The size is a big difference; its comparing apples to oranges.

i have a xoom, and unless the xoom is a brand new device, id go nexus 7.

Any way, on a liter note. I have the Xoom and the wife has the Nexus. As nice as the nexus is. There is no way that I would trade the Xoom for the Nexus. It is just so, I dont know, solid?

I also had both and, don't get me wrong, I love my Xoom...
But, hands down, Nexus 7.
Reasons include, but are not limited too:
1 - Same charger for Nexus as most Android and even Windows phones (big plus/Xoom uses different charger...not bad, just an additional charger to carry.)
2 - NFC. There may be ways around this, but when you have it and actually use it, that makes it hard to without...
3 - weight. Xoom is heavy even by tablet standards. Again, not bad, but when you have to carry it everyday everywhere (with charger) it can become cumbersome. disadvantageous when portability is paramount.
4 - Quad core. How many Xoom owners run into the slowing and sometimes compete stops of the OS. Light use is usually not to bad, however...but pile on the multitasking and the Xoom will take a much needed break. Have yet to recreate this phenomenon on my 16gb nexus 7
But, I'm told the Nexus doesn't support MHL...the alternative to HDMI. If that is important to you, go Xoom. That was one feature I missed sorely with my Nexus.
For storage, OTG cables can solve the expansion problem.
The Xoom has a rear camera, but I personally never found a use for it...
Both are phenomenal tablets and I have used them both extensively...but choice would be the Nexus...the Xoom will only get cheaper, trust me...I paid full price for mine over a year ago....
Hoped this helps...

Correct. Why do I like the Xoom over the N7? Quite simple really, I just do.
In all seriousness, the Xoom has a metal housing which gives it that hey! I have a build quality that most if not all others dont have. And now that I have just returned the wifes N7. It being the Xoom does not suffer from the screen lift problem at all. I just read a bunch of posts where the screen crumpled under peoples thumbs where it was lifting. And Asus being the nice company that they are, refuses to replace them even though the dammage in the pictures clearly sides with factory deffect being a contributing factor in the dammage to the screen. My wifes N7 had screen lift. I brought it back before I read those posts about that problem. Im happy that I did. Also like the N7 the Xoom has great development going for it. Granted, it only has a 1Ghz dual core processor. It still does an excelent job. And having a 10" screen as a GPS is much better than a smaller screen.

You are very convincing and I have remarried very well!
The problem is big because now I'm more undecided than before.
Opt for xoom for the sd slot and the big display
I like the Nexus because it is new, mount jelly beans and has an excellent processor ....
I have ti decide because the offer for the xoom to 289 EURO expires Saturday ...
I forgot .. in Italy the Nexus 7 costs 249.00 EUR
Without promoting the xoom is sold at 480.00 EURO

I would use the tablet mainly for internet, write notes and then connect via vpn to my office pc
as mentioned previously, it's simply a matter of taste & expectations. the smaller 7" N7 is lighter, and more portable by design, but the 10" Xoom is such a solid device that has maintained it's own since launch. Given the JB update for wifi versions, and pending JB update for 3G/LTE versions, I would say go with a Xoom. Not to mention that you can pick up a Xoom for around $200 now.
My wife has an Ipad2, and I bought her a refurb Xoom for $199 and she loves it more than the Ipad2! Something about flash and stability, and the fact that she now has a "back" button sold her.
Worst case scenario, buy either one. Try/test it out. If you don't like it, return it and buy the other. Figure out what works best for you personally. That is the best course of action, imho.

I have ordered stuff from this place many many times. Never Cell Phones. What are your guys options? They are cheap. Also does anyone know if any of these are being worked on by XPA developers? thanks
http://www.lightinthebox.com/c/android-cell-phones_3309
Never heard of them, quickly glanced at a couple and they seem to be 2-3 year old technology. Plus being they are trying to mimic popular phones I will also assume build quality is as cheap as the price hints at.
Granted I know nothing about these phones so take my opinion with a grain of salt... but I have almost always had less the good experiences with knock off brands from over seas

These definitely look interesting. Would be cool to get some hands on time. These are probably cheap Chinese phones that are garbage in functionality and build. If you have had good customer service from them and they have a return policy, then give it a try and let us know how it goes.

They're not cheap for what they are, cheap. If you buy one, you must have the mindset of a professional gambler, that the odds are in favour of the "House", and be prepared to lose everything.
They're not that cheap. You'd do better buying something off Craigslist.
But I did buy my son a Chinese knockoff of a Blackberry, dual SIM, any gsm radio standard in the civilized world, off ebay for $25. Seems pretty robust, nice display, music player, fm radio, works on any gsm mvno. Now that's good value.

I bought a couple ifauxnes a few years back as a prank... long story... but they appear as if they would be similar build quality to them which was sub par and exactly what I was expectfing. If you are planing on these to be your daily driver I would suggest picking up something else

These are Chinese phones...not implying that they are bad, it's just I would buy android phones with strong dev support. But interesting find indeed. Do make a review on them soon
There is a knockoff of every popular phone of the last year. Reminds me of the Simpsons going tv shopping. We have all the major brands magnetbox sorny
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Honestly, yes as everybody has mentioned, these seem to be knockoffs of other phones ( such as a the sgs3) and the hardware maybe a little bit behind, but they're cheap and you'll get what you paid for. I've read the reviews and almost all of them have a positive feedback, saying they love it, it's fast, fast shipping blahblahblah.
In the end, its all up to you, if you're looking for a cheap phone that will give you a bang for your buck.
Keep in mind that since it's not big time developers nor manufacturers, don't expect huge support.
As an added note to before, the few android knock off devices I've owned have been easy to root but you need to make your own changes to the kernel/ROM if you want too much more than is there already in android. But there are many auto scripts nowadays that allow you to much of this easy.
Don't expect too much quality hardware wise but for the most part android I'd android and if you're willing o chance it you maybe OK. Up until I got my nexus 7 I used one of a few of the knock off tablets I bought. One of them was real nice for the price, the other three I had to sell on eBay rather quickly as they were subpar

The cheapest, best quality ones would probably be the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, or Nook Tablet. They are over how much you want to spend, but tablets that run for about $100 are really poorly made.
kindle fire it's a good option
I guess it would depend on the ages of the kids under 12 I would suggest a cheap one as there more likely to break it through dropping it or spilling something over it or whatever! I got 4 tablets from ebay for my kids and one was only £87 that was the cheapest one for my 9 year old and it is a very good machine for the price I really can't fault it if you look hard enough and be very careful if you buy from places like that make sure you only pay through paypal so your payment is protected oh and it was a envy9 am sure hewlett packard makes that, you can get a 7 inch for cheaper again and there perfect for children.

A friend of mine lost her iPhone 5 one too many times, and now her insurance won't allow her to buy a replacement.
So I get to convert her to Android!
I've done some research and there's few Androids under $200 that have Jelly Bean and only two (that I know of) that have LTE (Skyrocket and Vivid).
How has this phone held up over the years? How has the Jelly Bean update affected the battery life and overall performance?
For someone coming from an iPhone 5, will this old phone give a bad impression of what life is like with Android?
Any thoughts or opinions are much appreciated!
It's a great phone and the development community is awesome. But, it's not an iPhone. If she's not up to experimenting and playing with the phone and learning something new it may not be for her. I wouldn't get one for my wife. The iPhone works, this phone is great but it's not a use it and forget it.

Buy her something cheap, plain and boring. If she repeatedly loses phones, why bother spending any good amount of money on a good one?
Then again, the iPhone seems like a great idea in this scenario. :good:
Is there anybody who can "loose" a 500-600$ devices "too many times" ? And insurance always pay ? good
If you're considering this phone. I highly recommend it.
Bought mine brand new off eBay with a square trade warranty for 40$ didn't break 300$
I also recommend the anker extended battery packs, things beast.

What phone would you guys think I should get for my mother as a gift? (she needs a huge upgrade...TRUST me...) I was thinking around the line of a Nexus 4, but I'm open to all suggestions! :cyclops:
I think what she needs is a large screen phone, I'm thinking of 4.3 - 4.7 inch phone (easier to read text). And a simple UI, maybe LG or Samsung. Nexus 4 is a good choice.
I just gave my mother Samsung Galaxy chat, because she was used to blackberry phone, and needed keypad for texting.

I'll second you on the Nexus 4 and also suggest a Galaxy Note.
Ah ok, thanks
Depends on what she needs it for, how tech-savvy she is and what she wants from it.
I got my mum an S3 and she's not let it out of her hands for more than half an hour since, she loves the thing. Was originally going to get her an s4 mini, but she has reading glasses and the screen was too small for her to comfortably read without them. Not to mention the size of the keyboard.

The name that cannot be spoken...
I'm going to agree with ShadowLea about the tech-savvy-ness of your mom...
And as much as I love Android and hate...that Fruit company...have you considered getting your mom an iPh----darn I can't say it.
I mean in terms of what her friends are using.
In terms of reliability.
In terms of ease of use.
In terms of elegance.
In terms of apps that work.
I don't know why I'm saying this, given this is an Android forum, but for parents...it's a whole different state of mind when it comes to using tech.
If she has a problem, you won't have to fix it or troubleshoot (unless you want to), she can take it to the Appl- store and they could explain it to her real patiently.
I know that this is a big thing with me and my mom, I get really impatient explaining tech to her (which I know is my bad).
my 2 cents
iPho-- has too small screen..I think nexus 4 is a better choice!
