The cheapest, best quality ones would probably be the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, or Nook Tablet. They are over how much you want to spend, but tablets that run for about $100 are really poorly made.

kindle fire it's a good option

I guess it would depend on the ages of the kids under 12 I would suggest a cheap one as there more likely to break it through dropping it or spilling something over it or whatever! I got 4 tablets from ebay for my kids and one was only £87 that was the cheapest one for my 9 year old and it is a very good machine for the price I really can't fault it if you look hard enough and be very careful if you buy from places like that make sure you only pay through paypal so your payment is protected oh and it was a envy9 am sure hewlett packard makes that, you can get a 7 inch for cheaper again and there perfect for children.

7" tablet selection help

Hey everyone,
I have been spending the last few days searching the internet and looking at getting a 7" android tablet. The main use for tablet is just to have fun and play with. Two things i am looking for is minimum 3.*, sd card slot and wifi only. What are your recommendations and why. Thanks.

If money isn't a problem then the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch is a good option. Its not an outrageous price but it is up there a bit. You can find a good deal with free fast shipping on amazon. (I'm looking for a tablet too) If you are looking for a cheap price. Go for the kindle fire! You can root it and install ice cream sandwich. I've done it, it works perfect. Only downside is there is no camera but its a fast, cheap, customizable tablet if you are willing to root it!
Hit thanks if I helped.

I like the 7" form factor, I have the OG Xoom and it is still going strong, I got my wife the Kindle Fire
The fire is um special, Samsung has a VERY nice 7" out that I would recommend. I will be upgrading to a 7" next year. It will be very hard for you to get a good tablet under 400$
Google Nexus Tablet is 7 inch, comes out in July, made by Asus!
I would highly recommend any product made by Asus, practically all my electronics are from them, even my home phone is an Asus Skype videophone, lol.
Padfone comes out soon. I'm hoping that once it picks up in popularity, Asus will release a 7-8 inch dock for it as well.
Got dell streak 7.. Thanks for everyone input.

I'm very happy with my Acer A100 Gen2, my 4th android device and first Droid tablet. Just need a way to root ICS
I'm looking for a cheap Tab right now as well and only want the 7 inch form factor. The nexus Tab will be great in three months, but until then I'm sick of not having a tab.
I'm thinking of the Acer Iconia A100 seeing as it's just about the only tegra 2 tab out there and it gets ICS this month.
What is the "Gen 2" and what's the difference?

Nook color, you can used ones on eBay that look brandnew for $110 or buy a new one for around $120-$130. The Nook color has a lot of support here, with cm7 stable and ics nightly. The Nook color is unbrickable, so for kids if they are getting into android modding then this would be great

the nook color does look good and i see there are manufacturer refurbished ones for sale too. that might be the route to go....thanks.
No problem good luck

Just my opinion.
I would buy a Galaxy Tab or iPad. I know it's for kids but this way you can also enjoy it. I'm not a big fan of cheap devices, because they mostly are allot worse.
goood tablet
I think ipad could be the most benefit

i have an asus transformer already for myself (will likely go with one of the newer models from asus later in the year, can u say black friday). im trying to actually get them from using mine, lol. i would go with something more expensive, but maybe later down the line depending on how they do with the lesser expensive one. i have 2 other younger kids that these could be passed down to if i decide to upgrade the older kids in a year or so.
Kindle
No one suggested a Kindle Fire, I think they are good and you can get a "refurbished" one too, I just got an email from Amazon having them on sale for $120...

I would seriously go for a kindle as well if i could find them refurbished at that price, but i can't find them and don't see that email (I'm an Amazon Prime customer too). can you provide a link?
I would reccomend the kindle fire over nookcolor but I didn't no that they were that inexpensive the kindle fire is better then nookcolor

awesome helpers! not one person commented on the five devices the OP was asking about! lol
I've gotta say, be wary buying off-branded tabs.
And with that, I'm going to recommend the Kindle Fire as well. Root in and install a CM rom and it will be just as good as a higher end tablet

I'm looking for input and insight?

I have an 8 year old daughter and I'm looking to get her some kind of tablet. I'm trying to keep it in the $200 - $250 range and I would like it to have a newer Android version. My wife seems to think the 7 inch tablets won't be large enough but I think it's fine. So, I would like some guidance in the tablet world for something nice around $250 possibly larger than 7" with good specs,my daughter will enjoy. I also have no problem rooting and upgrading software if possible to save a couple of dollars and get the most out of the device. Thank you.

All three of my children got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. They can't peel their faces off them. Not bad, in your price range, and at least from my experience, the kids love 'em...

Works great! Thanks

[Q] Optimal tablet/screen repair cost combo??

So I was just about to finally cut ties with Apple in favor of Android when my 7-year-old got pissed off at Temple Run 2 and broke my Nexus 7. Cost to repair cracked screen is very, very close to the cost of buying an entirely new unit (nothing cheaper than $150 on eBay or elsewhere that I could find). I'd also been thinking of getting a Nexus 10, but having seen how expensive the Nexus 7 would be to fix, decided to look into repair costs for the Nexus 10 and found them similarly ridiculous.
I live in a chaotic, disorganized household with at least two kids who love tablets and are extremely accident prone (when they aren't breaking stuff on purpose). It is essential that whatever tablet I buy be cheap to fix. My iPad 2, for example, has probably had half a dozen new screens in the 1.5 years I've owned it (at an acceptable $30 a pop via eBay).
Is anyone aware of a tablet that is comparable to the Nexus 7 or 10 in terms of screen resolution, processor speed, overall build quality AND has screens that are cheap to replace??
Current plan is to keep the iPad 2 limping along for a while longer, but I'd love an excuse to leave those jailbreak-sabotaging, anti-freedom jerks behind once and for all.
My advice, learn parenting first, then worry about repairing those screens, or vice versa.

Or, get a otter box case, if they break in those, i heard they pay you for a new device. Because they're 'indestructable.'

A seriosly laughed a lot at this.
Thanks

Many excellent suggestions!!!
My question though (and remember it is OK to say you don't know, if you don't know) is whether anyone is aware of a good quality tablet that is also cheap to repair.

Suggest an android tablet for mom's xmas gift

Alright guys. Looking to get my mom a tablet so she can stop using my laptop lol. General use is ebay, facebook, youtube etc.
I think something from 8.9 to 10 inches would be ideal, as she can prop it on the table and look at it. as opposed to a 7 inch tablet.
I was looking at the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 for its HD picture, and overall seems like a good general use tablet, but i know the lack of sd card support and needing to be rooted to get google play store kinda put me off.
I dont really want to stick her with an ipad, don't want her tied to sticking with itunes.
but i know since it is not for me, i shouldn't bother tweaking and modding it than worrying about auto-updates etc lol.
Got to be able to find a stylish case for it that offers a lil protection.
I am open for suggestions. I want it to be around $400 . My step dad and I will be going half on it (I dont make that much money but I will put down $200) .
I guess even a Nook HD+ looks decent, but the hardware specs seem a bit dated now.

I bought the 9.7-inch Sumivision Cyclone Voyager II. Not far off your price bracket in the UK.
Cyclone Voyager 2
From a quick glance, not a Nexus, but not far off it.
I heartily recommend the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, which you should be able to pick up at your local Walmart for $149. I won't get into the detailed specs here (Google is your friend ) but it's practically a clone of the Nexus 7 but with front and rear cameras and an external SD slot, all for about 70 bucks less than the Nexus. In a similar situation as yours I bought it for my Mum's birthday and it was a great decision -- it's a great little tab! And there are threads here on xda for rooting and a few ROMs that are being developed.
Good luck with your Xmas shopping!
[Edit: I reread and see you're looking for something bigger than a 7-inch tablet -- I still think this one's a great deal though; you might want to consider it anyway. And you can get a nice i-Unik case for it on Amazon.]

That Sero 7 does look pretty interesting, i may have to get that for myself after the holidays lol.
I may go with the galaxy tab 3 or note 10.1 depending on how much my step dad is gonna pitch in on the gift. Maybe a bit overkill but should get a few years out of it imo.
