Starting yesterday my phone boots up in Car Mode- every time. Rebooted at least 10 times, battery pull etc. Won't stop. I've never seen car mode before. Same if plugged in or not. Also at the same time the screen now rotates when auto-rotation is turned off. Checked settings in Go Launcher etc. Can't figure it out! I'm up for early upgrade and can go get a Note 2 today but am hoping this thing will make it until the S4 is out! Phone is stock- the only reason i ask questions here is that i know you guys know your stuff and i might get a fix!
And speakerphone is on by default now when taking a call.

Weird. Maybe try factory resetting it?

Even though it's charging many have said it's the usb port. I'll just live with it until April. Thx!

could be the car mode app - some setting in it is telling it to launch at startup. I would try to either clear defaults for that app or download another app that enables car mode (like vlingo), and see if you can force it to ask you upon startup.
regarding the rotation - you might need to uninstall and re-install GO.
My Charge did that once. It was a bad USB port. It sucked because it also kept the USB port from being used for anything other than charging...it would not recognize it as USB.

Bad usb port. I took a tiny screwdriver and bent the the little metal plug up inside the phone. Now it functions right. Can upgrade now but patiently waiting for S4.

Hey guys, im visting from the vibrant forum. My girlfriend and I have had our galaxies for about a month now. She returned hers last week after we discovered that no one could hear her on voice calls, and she was also having problems charging.
Now she has her new captivate, and it is rooted (stock firmware + kernel), and shes still having charging problems. Be it through the wall or computer, every once in a while the phone just wont charge unless you reboot the phone. The charging icon doesnt even come up. Last night it started happening so i took out her phone and plugged in my Vibrant and my phone started charging no problem. Any thoughts?
PS - the oddest thing is that when this problem is occuring, nothing happens when you plug it in EXCEPT the button backlight comes on, which signifies that the phone knows that its plugged in

Is she using the stock charging cable that came with it? I have had mixed results with other cables.
Is it attached to a USB on the abck of the computer or the front? Some people have experienced lower voltage on front auxuliary USB ports compared to rear main USB ports.
Ughhhhh Girlfriend+ Boyfriend-Modded Phone = Headache ... FTFY.
Once you start making changes to your ladies phone, you OWN anything goes wrong.
If you wiggle the power cable, does the connection fluctuate? I had to return my phone and get a new one because of this.

i know what im doing, i modded the **** out of my vibrant and the thing loves me for it. its not coincidence that its happened on two of her captivates. no loose cable...like i said when she said it was happening last night i immediately unplugged her phone and plugge din my vibrant and my phone charged perfectly
Is the battery door on it open all the way? It has to click. I know it seems silly to ask but that has been a common problem around here.

+2 as I thought the same thing when I first got mine before hitting the forums.
It's totally easy to reflexively reply "You calling me stupid? Of course I opened it all the way... see? ... <click> .... %&#&!%*!!!!"
It slides to a stop and the plug doesn't go in all the way. You have to push it the extra click to have it fully opened.
If that's not the problem then I seriously have to wonder what your girlfriend is doing to the phone to cause this. As you said.. it's not a coincidence that this has happened to two of her Captivates now...
Hopefully she never forced the cable into the phone. That would probably mess up the jack pretty nicely.
You said she replaced it. Did they just give her a new phone (as in no new battery back cover charging cable) or is everything new? If its the same battery, maybe its a bad battery. I only ask because I had to RMA my phone and I just got ther bare phone.
Hi all
I just bought an i9020 today and when I plugged in the USB the phone is charging but the window for mounting storage did not pop up. It acted as if i simply plugged in a wall charger. I'm sure it's not the cable or the computer's hardware problem because I have three computers and three cables and I've tried different combinations and it still did not work. The old nexus one that I had, however, successfully recognized the USB cable and was able to mount and get into debugging mode etc.
Any ideas? If the phone is charging then it would reject the possibility of a damaged USB port correct?
I can't even fiddle with the drivers at this point because the phone doesn't even show up in device manager. i have tried unplugging the battery as another thread suggested but the results are still the same.
And also another problem is that when I power off the phone will freeze when it's about to shut down. This happens when the cable is plugged and once I unplug the phone will shut down. The same thing happens in bootloader.
P.S Even in bootloader fastboot was unable to recognize the device.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ryan
Any ideas?
If it is a hardware issue I'll just send it back for a new one
This happened to me recently out of the blue. I flash a lot of ROMs so I thought maybe something on my device got messed up. I never did find a definitive answer as to why it happened, though. I also couldn't mount USB through CWM recovery.
But what fixed it was, I shut down the device, pulled the battery, waited 10 seconds, put battery back in, booted up, and I had USB connectivity again. I haven't lost connectivity since.
Since the battery pull didn't work for you, I would try and exchange the device for a new one.

Take a pocket knife or something else thin and place it under the tab in your USB port in your phone and press it up just a little then try plugging in it

if it's a hardware failure which component should be changed

i've never torn my nexus apart
but I imagine that it could be swapped out. you'd probably need to know your way around a board with a solder gun lol. I would try to google that or atleast the tear down of the nexus to see what your in for and if its changeable.

Hey guys I stumbled on a problem that almost gave me a heart attack,
My phone shuts off after about 1minute when the USB is connected. I came back from school and plugged in my phone to my laptop then when i opened the app store it froze and shut off. The app store is responding, nothings wrong with it. Its just everytime I plug it in it shuts up.
I tried the Settings > Development > Screen on when connected, still doesn't help, It keeps it on a little longer like 2 minutes then it still shuts off.
Can anyone help?

Are you stock? If not what ROM are you using?
Are you using the supplied USB cable that came with the phone when you got it? If not try that.
Have you looked inside the plug for bent pins? Get a magnifying glass and look in there. Also see about dirt inside, especially LINT.
What recovery do you have installed?
Have you tried plugging it into a wall socket?

My next suggestion would be to look into the Threads about Mohan's JB ROM, and see if others are having the same issue, as well as to maybe contact the Developer and let him know and see what he says about it. If all else fails, make a back up, and restore a stock ROM from SAMMOBILE, and see if it still has the problems. If not then you know it is the ROM, and not hardware, if it does, then you know that it is now a hardware issue.

I appreciate any help.
I tried switching roms, kernels....
Even wierder is that when it ic powered off, and I voud connect it to power cord,..it wont show the small battery charging...it would just power on by its own
And if I power off while charging...it wont power on till I remove the cord....
It is so frustrating
No oppinions?!
Just disable fast charge whenever you want to use it with your computer.

I tried almost everything, and I think our issue is not bad flash, it's USB problem.
Take the very best USB cable that you have and then try this trick, see if it helps. It worked for me for very short period of time, but I decided to share. My result is on and off, but at least in one of the tries my PC recognized and connected

I found this trick online also. ..Maybe I will give it another go

Ok, I permanently fixed it using this trick.
Here's what I did.
Turn off your phone, remove the battery. Take a nail polisher, apply on a tiny q-tip, and clean your usb port for few minutes. don't press to hard, you can break it. Make sure that q-tip is small enough to fit into the gaps.
Then take a needle and just scratch the usb port. do the same thing on the usb cable. Be careful.
Do it slow, and don't rush. It won't clean in 2 minutes. I spent around 20 min of cleaning and I have a working USB port again.
Good luck !
I believe I have a hard brick, but not sure about diagnosis or options. I put my phone on the charger last night, and it was dead this morning. I have been able to get it to boot twice only for it to shut off immediately due to lack of charge. I have plugged the phone into 3 different USB chargers and none of them appear to be charging my phone, however they all work on my Nexus 7. There is no LED on to indicate it is charging as it normally would. I cannot get into recovery or download mode. Any suggestions?
A little background about my specific situation:
I have had my S3 since launch, and have had no issues with it. I have had it rooted since the bootloader was overcome, and have run custom ROMS ever since. Most recently, I have been running CM 11 with the latest nightly being from early Feb. (not sure which date). I have CWM installed, and up til this point, my phone was working fine. I did get occasional random reboots since the latest nightly that I flashed, but the phone remained completely functional.
EDIT: It is not a brick problem, it is a charging issue. I can charge my phone in the car, but not through a wall charger or connected to a pc. When plugging into a pc, it does not register anything at all.

It's possible that your usb port is bad, but try to clean the inner contacts of the port first. You could try to plug into your PC instead of wall charger see if it works. In anycase if it worked with PC, but not wall charger or both, you need to replace the usb board which can be purchase for cheap on Ebay.

Do you know of someone who has an S3? Perhaps try swapping batteries with a charged one from a friend/associate, or test with a spare from a verizon store. At least then you can rule out a charging/USB charge port/battery issue vs something else

I don't know anyone. I am going to try and seek help at the verizon store, but they seem so useless whenever I go, and I think they will be more motivated to sell me a new phone.
Well I got my phone to work. I pulled the battery off and just cleaned out some of the dust that had collected. I assume it was just not getting a good connection. Thanks for the suggestions though

Turns out, it only worked on my car charger. The problem persists outside of my car. I cannot charge either through a wall outlet or on a USB cord connected to a PC. I have tried 2 instances of each all with their own cables. My car charger works fine though.
Anyone experience a similar problem? I am going to try and wipe and flash a new ROM, hoping that will fix it.
