[Q] front button issue and confusion - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Forgive if this has been mentioned, it is difficult to sift old threads from my phone.
Mine has had the issue of front 5 buttons not working. The strange issue is that they do work when I reboot, until the phone sleeps. Then they do nothing. it makes me wonder how it can be hardware related. Tried restoring to stock and it comes back
The symptom seems software but my inner helpdesk says a full restore points to hardware. Thoughts? Replacing that flex cable would be a pain (I did open her up to check for loose cables)

any thoughts at all?

This has now turned into when i slide the screen open, the screen shuts off. Please any help?

That sounds like a failing slide flex cable. They typically run under $20 on eBay. If you decide to do the work yourself, just be careful and take it slow when separating the housing from the LCD. HTC used a ton of double sided tape to attach the LCD. I'd recommend reviewing the ifixsmartphone repair guide. The have some great shots of the interior of the phone.
Also watch a couple of YouTube videos showing the dis-assembly process. This video from Repairs Universe shows the process pretty well. Note the cables at 6:52 in the video.
On the top, the left cable is a part of the slide flex cable and it contains your front facing camera, light and proximity sensor and speaker.
The center cable is for the digitizer. Twist or flex this too much and you can ruin your digitizer.
The right cable is the LCD cable.
On the bottom you have the other end of your slide flex cable with the front buttons and trackpad.

Broken lcd screen/digitizer

So, a few weeks ago my phone started acting weird. When I would open the keyboard, my screen would turn off. It did this for a few days, then it got worse. I couldn't even use my keyboard. Then, my screen would randomly start flickering... and now it just won't come on at all. The phone comes on, I can see the notification light blinking, but the screen won't come on at all.
I'm going to buy a replacement part for it, but I'm not sure if it's the digitizer or lcd screen. Anyone know which one it would be?
...at first...no digitizer, no display.
open the phone and check flex cable connection - maybe is poor connected.
If this not help then check flex cable.

yeah i was thinking it could be the flex cable, but i haven't played with it much yet. maybe i will tonight and see if my flex cable is disconnected/bad... but i couldn't find any replacement flex cables (without a lcd display or digitizer) anywhere.
IF it was the lcd, what would the symptoms be?
check flex connection and let me know
Was you photon disassembled?

Corn,
Can i post photo of my flex cable, to let know what you think if its broken or not,
the black coating of the cable were ripped off caused by the heat and friction to the metal clip and body,
often i play game application and while xt897 condition is heat i slide it to reply an incomming message,
and im about also to but the parts from etradesupply.com is it recommended or is there another supplier you recommend for xt897 flex slide cable, this damage also happen to my xt862 the previous year.

yessss no problem
i've always wondered if there is actually some way to buy flex cables replacements in case they break... so far, i have only found the whole frontal assembly which costs quite a lot and that includes the flex cables, turning what would have been a couple $ repair into a very expensive (and probably not worth) one
i got an old working photon q that i was keeping myself for spares in case...
if you want a part then PM me. x
need advise

i'm confused how to release replace my flex cable
Is there a tutorial how to replace the flex cable with front camera as selled by parts4repair? Or is it really foolproof?
It seems to me like I'm facing the same issues as described in the start post, only in an earlier stage of degeneration of the flex cable:
1. Suppose, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. When sliding out the keyboard only some millimeters, the screen goes black. If I press the power button at this stage (keyboard slid out some millimeters, screen black), the phone seems to crash and reboots.
2. Suppose again, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. This time I slide out the keyboard all the way (no matter how fast). The screen goes black. Pressing the power button at this stage doesn't show any effect. Only after pressing it a second time, the Photon Q is awake again, showing me the lock screen - apparently no crash and no reboot!
3. Suppose, the Photon Q is turned on and in operation. I turn the screen off by pressing the power button once, then I wait for some seconds and slide out the keyboard all the way. When I turn on the screen this time by pressing the power button, the lock screen appears as expected and everything is working fine.
All these scenarios also work the other way round, i.e. you assume the keyboard is already slid out all the way and you perform the slide-in movement. Also, this is not a software issue as it behaves analogously during reboot or in recovery mode. Furthermore, I opened my phone. The flex cable was connected properly and I couldn't see any damage to the flex cable. So it seems to be an internal loose connection of the flex cable.

Cracks are not always visible. But if they're not there, I'd suggest you open the back case and try to reseat the ribbon cables at the touchscreen PCB. While at it, check the flat silver cable connecting that board to the mainboard also. Make sure nothing is jarred loose by the drop.

thanx for responding...i did exactly what you said ..i disconnected both cables (silver and brown) and put them back..more than half of the screen started working, the other part was just dead and those parts didnt work even when i tilted the screen.. like 5 minutes later the entire screen is dead again......do you think its the digitizer?

Sorry for the late reply. I've run into this problem before. When you have a digitizer that works for a few minutes then stops as the tab warms up, (1) more likely than not, there's a crack somewhere or a tear on the ribbons, visible or not, or (2) the new screen boycotting the old firmware. No new screen points to faulty hardware. However, it doesn't hurt to eliminate possible software causes.
The best test I can think of at this point would be to first check the physical connections again (check the connectors and ribbon ends under a magnifying glass, make sure they aren't damaged, bent or stripped), then re-flash the firmware following instructions in another thread, then turn on "show touches" in settings. If you still see "ghost touches" after a few minutes, the digitizer is likely ass-kicked by the drop.
I've had a digitizer on a TF act "leisurely" because of a crack across the width of the bordering black strip that couldn't be detected with the naked eye because it severed the circuit on just the underside. The surface was totally smooth. As the crack spread, it became obvious.
If I had access to your glass, I could've tested for you. Too bad.

[Q]Tablet not turning on after digitizer replacement

So I broke my digitizer glass a few weeks ago. I ordered a new digitizer off ebay... I made sure I ordered the correct version (it was the "no model version" or whatever). Installed it which was really annoying because of all the nasty glue.
Now I can't get the tablet to turn on at all. Before at least the LCD was functional. The red charging light comes on when I plug in the charger but that's it.
Any way I accidentally broke a cable or something when I was taking it apart? I checked it all and everything seems fine... I really don't know what to do.
Assuming I can't get it fixed, think I could sell the broken tablet for anything?
Thanks!

Of course you can resell the tab in its current state. Quickly or slowly depending on the asking price. But before doing that, you should check one more time. The fastest way is plug it to a TV monitor via the micro HDMI port. If it comes on, at least you know the system is working except for the video. Past that, there can only be two possibilities. (1) Bad lcd: something might have happened when you pried it off the broken digitizer; and/or (2) the video cable is bad, or improperly connected - by that, I mean you need to make sure it fits all the way in at both ends (mainboard & LCD). Check connection with a magnifying glass, You won't believe how many times people forget to reconnect the cable or connect it wrong. Lastly, if you did turn the service switch off, make sure it's turned on again. Good luck.
LCD to Mainboard connection...can it be connected "wrong"? Or simply not as snug as it should be?
Also, what is the service switch?

Here's the link to the relevant thread. Search for the necessary information within it. The cable that goes from LCD to mainboard is labeled: "MB" end goes to mainboard. The service switch is located at the top of the mainboard looking from the back, to the left of the power button ribbon (top right corner of tab), and is labeled "on"/"off". You should turn it off before doing anything. It cuts off all current to the boards and prevents accidental shortcircuitings. If you don't and mess around with the digitizer board, you might burn a fuse that controls the dig's operations. But this is for later. Go to the thread and browse it.

[Q] Screen stops working intermittently, seems to be hardware related, help?

So I've been having a ton of issues with my phone lately, to the point I can't use it anymore. I'll list them in case they may show what the problem is. First, the charging port went out. I swapped out for a new flex cable on ebay and all was well again. Next the speaker stopped working unless I would squeeze the bottom of the phone, and then stopped working completely (Not sure if this was the speaker itself or if it was making poor contact with the new flex cable.).
Up next, and the worst problem of all, is the screen stopped working intermittently. I seemed to be able to get it working better when I would squeeze the phone, which seemed strange to me. This kept happening until it stopped working altogether!
So, thinking it was the flex cable, I just swapped it for another new one from a different seller, and it still isn't working. If I reboot the phone the screen works perfectly fine unless I put light pressure on the back of the above the "s" in nexus, then the screen shuts off and won't come back on again until I restart the phone again. As soon as I reboot the phone the screen works great again until I tap that spot.
I'm a bit at a loss to what I should be looking for, or what I need to replace? Is there some sort of short? Is a connection poorly made? It's a brand new flex cable and the old one seemed to be doing the same, and I've double checked the connections and they seem to be fine.
If you have any ideas, I'm all ears, just about to tear apart the phone to check where it might be making shorts around that area! Thanks everyone!
Seemed to be an issue with the flex cable connecter to the motherboard. When I added pressure to the connector the screen would work, as I let off pressure the screen quit. I ended up adding a few layers of electrical tape to the back of the connector so when I put the backplate housing and cover back on it would add some pressure. Seems to be working great now (knock on wood).

Thats a common experience you had. The connection between the USB cable and the motherboard for some reason can go bad. I suspect overheating may be the primary cause. The careful placement of double stick electrica tape appears to help fix this problem. I had to do it myself. The speaker not working can be caused by poor connection to the USB flex cable. There is an excellent youtube by "LE55ONS" on the disassembly/assembley which shows everything in great detail. It's worth a look.
Glad you got everything working

Nexus 5 Display not working. Don't know what to replace.

So, I was trying to replace my Nexus 5s camera and I disassembled the main motherboard. Replaced my camera and everything but after I reassembled the phone, I found out that there's no display. The LEDs work fine, because I see them light up and I see that the screen is black but it's a bright black and the screen is on. So after tampering with it, I found that the little USB charger port wire board wire thst connects just above the battery (idk how to describe it, its the orange strip that locks the battery in place) had a direct correlation with the display. If I unplugged it, the screen would go dark and off. If I replugged it, it would be on again. After doing this a few times, I actually got my phone's display to show for a little while before it went away to black again. So will buying a new orange strip part work or would I have to go to the bottom where the little screen digitizer is? I'm sorry if the problem is unclear because I really don't know how to say it or explain any better. Please help.
Replacing that strip is actually not easy.
With the device open, try to apply a little bit of force on the plug of the orange strip, there are mentions of the contacts stop working after upluging/pluging back.
You probably could buy a front frame (glass, touch, lcd and chassis) from ali cheap.
