[HELP] Can't root my friends sensation! - HTC Sensation

I've got a sensation which I rooted via revolutionary with no problems whatsoever, so when my mate bought one today he immediately asked me to root it for him.
Problem is, his one is on hboot 1.27.000 already since it's had the official ics update, so revolutionary won't work on it.
I tried using the HTCdev method, but that failed so it seems it may have had a board change at some point. So I then tried using temproot and controlbear to get temporary S-off. The bootloader now claims it's S-off, and I managed to sim unlock it for all networks and do superCID, but it won't let me install any recovery programs to allow me to flash custom roms, nor can I get root access.
Does anyone have any idea where I've gone wrong?

Never mind, I got it sorted. I finally found a recovery that it was willing to flash on the bootloader, and then once that was done I could flash the superuser.zip I'd used on mine a year or so ago. That allowed partial root access, so I was able to then flash a rom which was rooted anyway. Job done. :good:

I recommend you to try 4ext recovery. It's way better than CWM and team win.

I already use 4ext and have since put it on my friends phone too, cheers though.

Noob Question about the correct RUU I need...

So I've tried about 5 different RUU's to get my phone back to 2.2 with no luck.
Either a signature error or bootload mismatch or something or another.
I have a Sprint HTC Evo with 2.3.3.
Can someone help me get this thing back and running on 2.2?
I recently tried to use Unrevoked on it...which caused some issues with the bootloader .
Thanks, guys/gals
If you aren't s-off then you can't run an RUU for an older version. If you are s-off, just flash a rooted stock 2.2 rom. You can try a different RUU if you're already s-off, just make sure that you follow the directions closely.
If you're trying to root by downgrading, it won't work unless the phone is already s-off. If the phone is s-off and you're trying to gain root access, just flash a PC36IMG of a recovery then flash a rooted rom from there.
If you're taking it in for repair, keep s-off so you can re-root if you get the phone back (if you're already rooted and want to stay that way).

Hey, thanks for the reply .
I'm not sure what you mean by S-OFF/S-ON however .
Also, I've tried probably five or six different RUU's, none of them want to run.

You may still be able to receive updates but I wouldn't recommend it.
I believe that you're either S-ON, no-root and apply updates or S-OFF, root and NO updates!
Ok. But what is the best method to root my ds??

Gingerbreak or superoneclick. I prefer Gingerbreak because I found the whole process much quicker

Im not sure if you are able to use the revolutionary tool to s-off your device, because it currently only supports HTC Desire S (saga) 0.98.0000 and 0.98.0002 hboot versions, but not the 2.00..... (coming with android 2.3.5)
you might wanna check htcdev.com for the unroot
I searched for those rooting methods and i find that superoneclick is not stable.
and for gingerbreak i didn't find any guide.
Is there any how to root Desire S?
And also i have S-ON and HBOOT-2.00 0002
Search and you will find....

You need to go to the htcdev site and perform the hboot lock procedure. Search and you will find the post on how to do it.
htcdev method
Hi, sorry to say i have tryied this method from htcdev yesterday and it only unlocks fast boot so you are able to flash a rom via recovery, BUT your phone and hboot will stay in S-ON so you are not able to overvrite hboot version and Radio which is sometimes necessary to support the custom ROM. I doubt if there is a real method to make hboot 2.00.0002 really s-off..

You asked about rooting your phone. By unlocking the bootloader you can now flash a custom recovery which will allow you to flash the SU binary and the Superuser app which will give you root. That is what you asked and that is all ou need to do. Gaining S-Off is just another way to get a custom recovery and flash the SU binary and Superuser app.

With all the respect, yes you can install custom rom with open hboot and you can gain a root(su) user rights, BUT if your rom is not compatible with your RADIO the you are doomed, your wifi, sd card, and another drivers may not be working, and in this case you are unable to overwrite the radio as the S(ecurity)-ON is locking right this. That was exactly my case, i installed S-ON original hboot from RUU 2.00.0002 and the newest Desire S ROM, but my wifi was not working and my sd was not accesible from pc, i went into recovery a tryied to flash RADIO image, but it was not possible, everytime the recovery was parsing the image and then just went back to bootloader main screen like nothing happend, this is because the RADIO is locked, i have tryied more imeges to be sure the first one was not corrupted, everytime the same result..
Still didn't find a way to root my DS.
Can anyone provide me a link to do this?
Go to http://www.htcdev.com press unlock bootloader and follow the instructions to s-off your device. (instead of all the files there, you will need only this http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=727371&d=1316684239. Desire S is not at the supported devices, but it works great.)
It says "unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings" which means that it will reset all your phone settings I suppose. If anyone has tried this please inform us what we loose and if there is a better way for avoiding that.
@kleftisx p.m.to me in Greek if you didn't understand something!

[Q] flashing boot.img

Hi,
I unlocked my desire with HTCDev so i have to flash the boot.img file every time i install a rom with a different kernel.
I was wondering if there another way, without connecting the phone to the pc, to flash this file.
I'm afraid not but i would like to be sure !
Nope, afaik not
There is a test feature on Sensation in 4EXT recovery, that allows doing it, activating bootloader upon reboot in some way.
I'm not sure if 4EXT recovery for Desire S has the same feature. Worth checking.
In any case, that's your only hope. The other way would be to relock, downgrade and S-OFF, to avoid all this unnecessary mess of flashing boot.img.
That feature doesn't work on desire s .
So the only way is via a pc using fastboot

Hi, Noob here!!!
I've been trying to install a custom ROM onto my HTC desire s , 2.00.0002, 3 branded device for 2 days now.
Super one click sticks at stage 7, tried all the deselect and reselect debugging fixes.
Done the HTCdev unlock, thinking this would help.
Tried to downgrade to use revolution, done all the zergRush and misc_version commands but nothing happens when trying to change version, still had $ in command line instead of #
I've installed Clockworkmod and can boot into recovery, have backed up, deleted and formatted and recovered succesfully.
My main question is.....Can I flash CyanogenMod without rooting?
if so, what other roms can I flash via clockworkmod?
If I have to root...how do I manage it? because I've been right round 3 circles of the net and these pages trying to find an answer!!!
Hope someone can help.
The guides here are really detailed. If you can't follow them - I suggest you leave the phone as is until you can, since you're likely to cause way more damage going down the road. And in the meantime, read the guides until you figure out what things do.

Since you have already been able to install CWM recovery, means that your device is already rooted? Check whether you have SuperUser installed, download the free version of Titanium backup and run the app once, it will tell you whether or not you are rooted. If it is, then I suggest you to follow the link below to downgrade and S-OFF your device (since you already unlocked it using HTCDev anyway).. Or you can stay S-On but i'm afraid you need to use your PC to flash the boot.img everytime you flash a ROM..
If it's not rooted, then try to root it with the same link below.. HTCDev unlock is different with root..
But locked down to 3 network is another thing, I'm afraid you need to pay to get it carrier-unlocked..

Try to follow this thread to downgrade, I was in the same situation like you before, and did almost all the downgrade threads but only this works out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919
Hurley, there are two methods to exploit Saga. Try both. For me, zerg method works after fail trying the other method. I think you need to relock it first if you root using htcdev. ( am not remember the steps )
After root, downgrade to the earliest RUU, yes, im on asia region, but i used euro ruu, it works. Confirm your hboot downgraded to 98 after flash ruu. Then, go on to revolutionary. S-Off for good
All guides can be found on Index Thread, at HTC Desire S Development forum. ( im on phone, cant give links )

no just flash zip file .
Nothing hard here. I've flashed 4-5 roms up to now. All running without a hiccup. Here's how you do-
Extract boot.img from the rom you are flashing
Put adb.exe, fastboot.exe, adb.dll and boot.img in a folder
Flash everything normally through recovery
And when it's done DON"T REBOOT just power off
Open up cmd, run as admin and go to your folder( cd c:\folder_name
type adb reboot bootloader
And finally fastboot flash boot boot.img
Everything should be okay.

[Q] htc inspire lost root but still s-off.

I have a htc inspire 4g from at & t. I rooted it using ace hack kit and it was great. However,i was trying to root another inspire and made the mistake of rerooting my phone.Well half way threw the process the hack kit stopped and i made the mistake of wiping my data.So it was basically a break till i read up on what to do to bring it back.So i ran a stock att ruu on it and it returned it to a stock rom with 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 . But i lost root,my bootloader says locked and i had eng s-off but now i only have s-off.I lost superuser and cwm.Ive been told i could still reinstall cwm as long as i have s-off but it simply wont do it.i even tryed to run the hack kit again but it wont work.Someone told me to unlock the bootloader and then i will be able to flash cwm.But i am not sure.oh and i tryed to flash cwm but it says superuser was not found.i used rootfinder and it too says my phone is not rooted.could someone please help?I know i messed up too not reading the effen manuel but i.. .am new to all this and i panicked when my phone went black

That's 4ext recovery RC7.
Place it in the root of the sd card, reboot into hboot, follow the instructions. Once done, remove the file from the root or delete it.
If you prefer cwm recovery, you can get it from my signature in glevitan's guide in post#7.
After whichever one you choose, get the rom of your choice and flash normally or flash the supersu.zip which you can find in xda to get root access. (Edit: for some reason now I'm doubting if the supersu.zip will give you root access. Perhaps it's the lack of coffee.)
Sent from a dream.
If you are S-OFF you can run the option to install cwm recovery from the aahk. Once you do that, reboot into recovery and flash a rooted ROM.

[Q] S-off for 5.18 firmware????

I just bought the at&t htc one x online. It come with the 5.18 firmware.
I did a little research but could only root the phone with WeakSauce.
I have tried the firewater but not any luck yet.
Is there any way that I could install Recovery or unlock bootloader for now?( I try HTC-DEv but they give me the Error Code: 160.
Error Reason: MID Not Allowed.). I also try change CID but still got the CWS_001
Are we stuck here in 5.18?
By the way, when I boot into bootloader, the phone shows "Tampered" and "Locked"
Is it normal?
Thank you very much.
No, there is no way at all you can install a custom recovery. In order to do that you need an unlocked bootloader, which you can't do because there is no exploit to get SuperCID on the 5.18 firmware. The closest you're gonna get is temp root via Weaksauce, which will only allow you to install root apps, you are unable to install any custom ROMs. Unless a highly skilled dev releases a crack (don't hold your breath, this is an old phone now) you're stuck in this situation.
