[Q] Charging with USB extension - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried charging with a USB 3.0 extension cord , But it is really Slow .
Any idea how to get it to charge at normal speeds?

probally not a high enougth ampage, think it needs to be 2amp, guess its trickle charging (charging extremely slowly)

Standard power output on computer USB ports is around 0.5 amps. Way too low. As Alex says you need 2 or 2.1 amp charger such as the one that came with the Note.
If you are using a different type of 2 amp charger - car charger or battery block - you will probably also need a polarity switcher to attach the standard Note USB cable.

No, I connect the USB extension cable from the Note 10.1 AC Adapter directly, and then connect the Note 10.1 30 pin connector to the other end.
Why doesn't this work?
Is it supposed to dampen the amps?? or is there something wrong with the cable?

As I said before, if you use another charger (or an extension cable) you will also need a polarity switcher.
For example : http://dx.com/p/usb-data-charging-e...1141?rt=1&p=2&m=2&r=3&k=1&t=1&s=81753&u=91141
NB for this connection P1000 Tablet and Note 10.1 are identical.
If you don't have this adaptor switched to "Charge" then you will see a red cross on the battery notification symbol. Include this and the red cross goes away and you just get the charging symbol. Just tested it with a 2 metre usb extension cable and a switcher and it works fine.
Alternatively you could use this cable directly with your extension cable without using the standard charging cable (two cables instead of three) - http://dx.com/p/designer-s-usb-char...2276?rt=1&p=2&m=2&r=3&k=1&t=1&s=91141&u=72276

Just to Confirm, Does this apply to Cable ONLY extension cables connected to the Official AC Adapter?
BTW, the "red cross on the battery notification symbol." never appeared even with the USB Cable extension. The NORMAL Battery icon with charging symbol appeared. It was just charging VERY slowly.
Type 1 (cable only):

Type 2:
I'm not using the intelligent Type 2 that has extra logic built-in. I'm just using a Type 1, pure cable.

I ordered that extact one and when I plug that into my original samsung adaper then into the 10ft USB 3.0 cable then into the original 30 pin cable, it charges but at a slow rate still, even with the little polarity switched to charge like you said.

I've used 2 usb extension cables, and the oem cable along with a 3rd party (Sync/charge) cable. I guess I should say I've used both the normal charger and belkin surge protector with built in usb ports.
This is what I've found. First the usb extension cable matters a lot. A "Smart" usb extension cable will take a little bit of the power to do it work, so less power to the device. Second if the extension cable is not well insulated or a thin cable you have more resistance and don't get as much power to your device. I now use a straight usb extension cable that you'll get if you goto Walmart or Target. Don't use one of the retractable/portable ones since they are normal thinner.
Now the intersting part. If you are running a custom Rom, that will effect how fast charging is with the extension. Redemption Rom only would do a trickle charge, while Omega v2.1 and "Collective Edition v6 Dark Side" both charge just fine with the extension. Redemption Rom did charge without the extension at the normal rate for me.
Kinda intersting that a usb extension and what rom your running could cause slow charging. Might not effect everyone the same way, but that is how I've seen things go so far.

Mine charges normally with a 3 ft USB 2.0 extension that has a thick cable on my factory charger but I only use it if I'm in a pinch.
I have never seen an Note 10.1 OEM charging cable longer than 3 feet. So if there isn't one longer........... is Samsung being cheap not to including or make a cable longer than 3 ft for the Note 10.1 or is there to much power loss for them.
You wonder as Samsung does make kick a s s products that seem to be fairly reliable so I guess they must have a good reason.

Instead of buying a longer usb charge cable I changed the unit that plugs into the charger, I use a long mains cable like the one in a ps3.

I had the same thing but when I looked deep in the charger I found that there are only 2 pins are used to provide the power the 1st and the last
so when you plug the original short cable then the extension it seems that it consumes more power I don't know why
I moded my cable that I broke the 2nd and the 3rd pins and when I connect it to my pc it charged normally with 1.5 meters extra

It is rated at 1amp. I'm wondering if the Captivate allows us to actually charge the whole 1AMP or if it charges only .7Amps as a limit. Does anyone know?
If not, is there a application I can check the charge rate to let you guys know?
It works, as does my Moto 850ma block. Not sure if it is faster though.

Yeah, I'm curious to know because my phone thinks it's connected to a PC and mounts my SD cards!
So it's thinking it's charging USB when it should be AC power...
Is there any way for us to monitor the Amps?

this has been the only problem i've had as well. happens with a power strip i use that has usb ports to charge as well. very weird.
I just watched a video on hacking a self-built battery charger - the mintyUSB one where you use an Altoids Tin. It has a USB female port and hold 2 AA batteries. Well, they just put out a new way so it charges an iPhone. What apple does is put voltage on the 2 data lines and the phone detects this and thinks it a USB port. Most chargers don't put any current on these lines.
If it thinks it is on a USB port, it will draw a lower current.
so having a lower current just prolongs the charging process correct?

Correct. But next time you have some spare time, try connecting your phone to a USB port and seeing how long it takes to charge.
It took my phone over an hour to go up three percent.
I've used the iPhone charger with the Captivate and it really doesn't charge any faster and honestly seems slower, it also really heats up the phone a lot more than the stock charger does.
When I plug the phone into my computer, it tells me it's only using 96mA (device manager) and charges faster than the iPhone charger does...
Well there we have it guys!
The iPhone charger is a no no! Because of those stupid pins...
I have a Mini USB charger that does 1AMP, I'm just going to buy a Micro USB to Mini USB adapter.
I use mine all the time. No problems.

ive been using the apple charging block and it seems to charge a bit faster
If you look closely on the AC plugin side of the iphone plug you will see it says it outputs 5V at 1A (1000mA). If you do some searching online for wall chargers you will see that the outputs for chargers range from DC 4.5V-9.5V at Max 800mA-1A. The iPhone charger should be fine with the captivate. I have been using the iPhone charging block for my phone and haven't had any problems.
i experienced a little problem where upon use of the apple charger, my phone would act like it was charging OVER USB.
you can verify how its charging by going into settings > about phone. on the normal samsung charger (.7A), it'll say "charging AC", however use of the apple charger prompted the phone to say "charging USB". in fact, i could even bring up the prompt to "mount" my sd card (even though its plugged into the wall).
not sure if the prob was just limited to me or to everyone
I get the same popup but it still charges...I don't think it hurts anything. The phone is just confused.
In the past, a lot of smartphones will fail to charge the battery on USB mode if the battery is critically low (< 20%) because they need > 500ma to initiate the charge process in that situation. So, even though your phone can still get trickle charges from USB mode, it won't charge at all when you really need it. Not sure if it is still true for Captivate. Make sure you test it out before you leave home without the stock AC adapter.
well the type of charging that the phone thinks its on versus how you're actually doing it could play a difference. if i recall usb can only charge maximum .5A, while on AC it can go up to 1A or higher. So if the phone thinks its on USB, it may artificially limit the charge so it takes even longer.
I just decided to go back to the regular samsung charger, it seemed a tiny bit faster. still dont understand why samsung didn't give us a 1A charger

Yes, the USB standard provides 500mA per port, but most charging ports short the data +/- pins which allows the device to enter dedicated charging port mode. This can allow for up to 1.8A, though most are capped at somewhere around half of that.
If the D+/- pins are not shorted the device will assume a data connection and will default to 500mA for charging. This could also be why some people are seeing that their phone will display options to mount drives when plugged into charger.

This is actually very insightful and makes perfect sense. Because Apple uses resistors to set voltages across D+/- pins, the phone won't recognize the wall charger as what it is and will only pull the 500mA that it thinks the "USB port" can provide.

2.1 amp car charger question

Bought a dual charger for the car, has 1 amp and 2.1 for devices like tables. When I plug the Tab Plus in the tablet gives me an X for charging and doesn't charge. Tried different cables. Any ideas??? GT 6210
Not compatible mHa...

So only Samsung OEM car and wall chargers work??? I even trid a lower amp charger in the house figuring it would just take longer to charger, and still get the X if it's not the Samsung wall charger.
2.1a is plenty to charge it, but as you said, only Samsung chargers will do it. It is highly annoying.

Interesting to note:
When the Tab/Tab+ is connected to an HDMI adapter (either dongle or stand version: I have both) the tab will draw power from ANY USB source and show it as charging. A generic 2.1 amp charger will add to the battery even while playing MAME on my HDTV using a BT PS3 controller while WIFI is enabled (a 500mA charger works too but cant keep up....in other words it will deplete your battery...just slower). The same generic charger will NOT charge my Tab+ when NOT connected to the HDTV/HDMI adapter.
It's charging, but it's only pulling 450mA. This is a safety measure to prevent pulling too much current from a computer USB port.
This is nuts. If it charges through an HDMI cable??It charges slowly through a computer??? I'm surprised nobody has come out with a "charge only" cable so it works generically. Obviously some of the pins can be left off or crossed to trick it.
I'd buy 3 and keep them all over the place!
I've seem them for Apple,I devices, even was shipped one by accident for my Ipod.
I'm writing CableJive! Maybe if they hear from enough of us they support out product. '[email protected]'
Eureka! I grabbed an old USB version 1 extension cable (female to Male) and plugged it on the end of my Tab sync power cable. Plugged it into Tab OEM wall charger, worked fine. Then I plugged it into a generic wall charger for phones (1amp) and IT IS CHARGING!
Still won't work on car adapter, tried 1 amp, 2.1amp, and 2.2 amp.
Ordered USB 2 extensions to test.
Have you made sure that the plug will charge something else? Make sure it will charge your phone or something. I know those dual micro-chargers have to be pushed with a lot more force than you would think. I would also check both ports on the dual charger. Usually only one of the ports will output 2.1 amps while the other only outputs 1 amp.
Quick semi-related charger question: are all Samsung Tab chargers the same? Or, at least, are they cross-compatible for charging?
I've got an imported tablet, and it's charging very slowly with a UK adaptor (which was supplied by the import company... had been expecting more, I have to say).
If I tool up and go shopping for a genuine Samsung Galaxy Tab charger, will any of them do, or do I need to be specific? Does anyone know?
i got one of these handy.

i bought it from DX few months back. http://dx.com/p/usb-power-adapter-for-samsung-p1000-81753?item=1
and it charges my fone with any usb chargers i have.. i also use it for my 2.1A car charger and works as expected.
I second the adapter recommendation shown above. I just wish it had some way to tie it to the cable so it doesn't get misplaced. They're pretty cheap, though, so I bought a couple extra.

Female Type C to Male Micro USB adapter?

In trying to get through the awkard transition to Type C for everything, I'm hoping to find an adapter. I'd love for it to be Google compliant, but I can live without. Basically, I plan on carrying the google charger with the attached cord (https://store.google.com/product/usb_c_charger) around in my bag. However, I still have a number of things to charge using micro usb (work blackberry, wife's phone, portable battery, etc). So, I'd like to only carry the one charger and an adapter.
Even this portable charger that everyone is talking about (http://www.amazon.com/Portable-RAVP...id=1447799819&sr=8-18&keywords=type+c+charger) looks like the input is micro usb. So, to use it, I'd have to carry a C-C cord and a wall to micro charger, on top of my phone charger.
Any one come across this yet?
Thanks!
The USB Type-C port on that battery pack can be used to either charge your phone, or to charge the pack. Type-C allows for charge to go either direction. You wouldn't have to carry a wall to micro charger, you could use the google charger you linked.

So, if you carried around that google charger to charge the battery pack, and plan on charging the other devices only from the battery pack itself, you would need:
1) A USB-C to C cable = to charge the nexus from the battery pack.
2) A USB-A to micro USB cable = To charge the blackberry, wife's phone, etc, from the battery pack. (I assume you have these already.)
I hope that made sense.
I have seen somewhere (probably the USB spec) that female USB-C ports are not allowed on cable adaptors. I have seen USB-C to micro USB male cables on Amazon, so if you carried one if these with you, you could charge any micro USB device with your 6P charger.
Also, +1 on the portable battery charging via USB-C. I wonder if it has pass through charging...The ability to charge usb devices while charging the battery itself.

Thanks Elnrik. I didn't see that about the type C in and out. It's still more than cables and things than I would like to carry - the two cables you mentioned, on top of the google charger, the portable battery itself, and the phone. I guess it'll have to do (for now at least).

Question regarding charging behavior on my SM-P905V

All,
I am a new owner of a used SM-P905V purchased on Amazon. It's a replacement for my old Note 10.1 2012 edition that died some time ago. I am curious as to what the expected behavior is with this tablet specifically pertaining to charging the device. The purchase didn't come with it's own charger so I have been using the Samsung adaptive fast charger that came with my Note 5 phone, the EP-TA20JWEUSTA model specifically. Now, my old tablet came with it's own proprietary charger and nothing I've found seems to indicate the Note Pro needs a proprietary charger.
So with the above in mind, I am trying to establish the known, expected behavior as it pertains to charging the device. I've observed that the battery will drain if I am using the tablet at anything greater than the halfway mark on the screen brightness slider but seemingly only if the device is below 100% charge when I start using it. It seems that if the device is at 100 full charge and plugged in, I can use it indefinitely while plugged in. Additionally, it seems to charge at a normal pace when it is sitting unused and plugged in.
So, is this what everyone's experience is in general? Would this indicate a need for a battery replacement? Is there a proprietary charger that would offer better charging rates? I have installed a charging monitor app and noticed that the output fluctuates greatly between 40ma and 1300ma when it's sitting idle and charging.
I have cleared the cache, which seemed to help but my expectation is that I should be able use this device while plugged in, regardless of activity/screen brightness and expect that it would charge the battery rather than drain it.
Device is full stock, unrooted.
Any insight is appreciated.
Sounds normal to me.
The problem with tablets like this is that the screen is LCD(instead of AMOLED, which would cost a fortune) and massive. Which means it uses so much power that all the charger can do while you're using it is keep it level. Lower brightness means less drain.
On top of that the hardware is also quite powerful, which drains it even further.
The original NotePro Charger is identical to the Note 3 N9005 charger and the S5 G900F charger. (I've got all three, same product number and specs.)
Also note that Qualcomm Fast Charge, which comes on the Snapdragon versions of the NotePro, requires a USB3.0 cable.
Original NotePro charger specs:
EP-TA10EWE
5.3V 2.0A
The charger that came with the Note 5(and Note 4) has a lower voltage rating, which impacts charging speed. It's 5.0V 2.0A.
(This one came with the German P905)

Thanks for the info. Does .3v really make that big of a difference? I was using the usb 3.0 cable at first then switched to the micro usb cable that came with the phone, I thought the cable could handle it. I'll switch back tonight and try it. Do you know what the US model number is for the above charger. All of the equivalent replacements I can find on Amazon are 5.0V @ 2a.

It doesn't matter if you're using 5 volts/2 Amps or 5.3 volts/ 2 Amps adapter as the charging current is almost the same: around 1.7 Amps.
However, incorrect USB charging cable will draw less current although it's USB 3 cable, so the important is buying the USB 3 cable designed for this model. It usually is larger in diameter so it can draw more current. If you get around 1 Amps, your USB cable is the wrong one unless the tablet is almost fully charged. Under 90% battery, the charging current should be around 1.7 Amps.
Here is the 5.3 volts adapter
Then I'm using 5 Volts/2 Amps adapter, the charging current is almost the same
However, the charging current is less when using the wrong USB 3 cable
So the key is buying the USB cable specifically designed for the Note Pro 12.2 inches. In above picture, the USB 3 cable is smaller in cable size which is for phone, draws only 1 Amp current. You can use the micro USB too, as charging is the same as USB 3 cable which has only faster speed for data transfer but this micro USB 2 cable must have a rate at 2 Amps, micro USB for phone only draws 1 Amp at max.

Any idea where to find an authentic USB 3.0 cable? I did buy this tablet used and it came with a usb 3.0 cable that *looks* legit in that it is noticeably heavier duty than a standard microusb cable and resembles both of the cables that you show in your pictures, you'll agree there is a very slight difference in appearance between the authentic and the non authentic USB 3.0 cable. One might only be able to tell the difference between them if they were side by side.
I have a regular microusb cable that came with my Note 5. The adaptive fast charger does output 2A. Is it a safe/accurate assumption to think that this microusb cable would be able to support 2A for the Note 12.2?
If not, can you link me to where I could purchase a cable that meets the charging requirements?

The micro USB is working fine as the USB 3 cable has the same rate of 2 Amps, it's only faster by data transfer because it's USB 3. If you're looking closely, the portion for charging of USB 3 is the same as micro USB, the other one for data. USB 3 cable is the same as micro USB for charging but its data transfer rate is 10 times faster.
Micro USB cable must be 2 Amps cable, it's usually larger than the 1 Amp cable by size.
However, if you want USB 3 cable, try this one

Google Pixel doesn't recognize AC charger

Hello,
I bought a google pixel yesterday. Everything went fine at first, even charging it. But today, I'm trying to charge it and it charges really really slowly. 5% in two hours, and it loses battery if I use it when charging.
Found out in parameters > battery that my phone says it's charging by USB even though my phone is connected to the wall socket.
So basically I can't charge my phone.
I don't have more cables, I'm using the one that was sold with the phone. So I'm gonna return my phone to where I bought it.
Any advise / help / solution in the meantime?

Try rebooting the phone and switching the orientation of the usb-c cable as it's plugged into your phone. There's been reports of problems with the stock charger and it's not clear if it's a problem with the phone or charger.

I rebooted it, factory reset with all data wiped, nothing changed. Still says "USB charging" while being on the AC.
Not sure about the orientation of the USB-C. I'm using the USB-C to USB-B cable sold with the phone, and plug the USB-B to an AC adapter that I previously owned and works just fine (no issue until 4 hours). I live in a tiny country where the pixel is sold with a british adapter which doesn't work since we don't use the british sockets here, so I don't use the USB-C to C that is used with this adapter. Not sure if I'm being clear. But I don't think it's relevant anyway. Yesterday it was charging just fine.

The Pixel comes with a AC charger which a USB-C connector on it. The cable it comes with is also a USB-C to USB-C cable. The other cable USB-A - USB-C with the adapter is for quick data transfers, not for quick charging.
It comes with TWO cables, one adapter and one USB-C Charger AC plug.

Very sorry about the confusion. I use the USB-A - USB-C cable that I plug to a AC charger that works in my country. The phone charged just fine yesterday as far as I know, but not today. The AC charger sold with the Pixel doesn't work in my country since we don't use the same socket.
Is it possible your charger just went bad?
So, the USB-C cable was indeed the one I should have used. I just bought an adapter for the british socket of the original adapter, and now the phone is charging perfectly. So problem solved, thank you all for helping.
