Browsing Media Files From PC To Galaxy - Playing Music/Videos ON The Device, No Remot - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello fellow xda members!
I've recently got a galaxy 2 7.0 tab as a gift from a buddy of mine.
I was curious as to using the device in some ways like a net book. I mean heck the tablet is light, small and can be carried almost anywhere.
But I was wondering if there is any sort of way either default, mods, apps in order to browse my files on the pc?
I'm not looking for a remote app where for example you have a foobar remote (a music player on the pc) to use the tablet as a remote to play music on the pc... I find that pretty useless because I want to be able to hear the music from my tablet not my pc.
I've seen videos and I believe the app is called splash or somewhere around those lines, where you completely control the computer on the tablet, as if the tablet was a touch monitor.
That seems interesting but I'm more into looking for a file browser like application or mod where I can just browse through my computers folders and such in order to smoothly stream music and movies on my tablet through the WiFi network of my pc.
So pretty much, I'm looking for a way to stream files from my pc to my tablet without a lot of hassle and taking smoothness into consideration. I mean if there is no such way, I guess the other method where you completely control your pc would be nice too.
All in all, just a way to stream files on my tablet from my pc, and being able to listen and visualize it on my tablet, not my computer.
Thank you!

I had been using es file explorer (estrongs) but wanted something better. I have found the one app for managing your device's files and can access network drives. http://android.nextapp.com/site/
The basic app is free, but for sharing as you desire, there is a 7 day trial before you would have to buy the 'plus' add-on. I used the trial for 1 day and liked it enough to upgrade and install on both of my devices.
Browse, copy, move, open, edit networked files all from your tablet.
Get it. You won't regret it.
You can't know your limits until you exceed them.

A few screen shots showing navigation into one of our PCs... Hope I show them in the right order...
The main screen:

}
After selecting 'Network':
After selecting my basement PC, which is my home theater PC with all my movies:
After I select the primary drive (the C:\ drive):
If you navigate all the way to an mp3, avi, or jpeg file you can open it using whatever android app you prefer. For movies, I prefer MX player. Smooth streaming.
You can't know your limits until you exceed them.

Thank you so much! I'll check it out and report back
The UI looks very slick and fits with the tablet

Was wondering how you actually open files with the default or custom apps on the tab? Because whenever I click something, it'll show up with open with FX files.
At the bottom, it'll say file is too large to retrieve and send to an application.
EDIT:
I got the mx player (free one) to work with the app, however the videos as assumed were pretty choppy/laggy. Is it because I'm using the free version of mx player or cause of my wifi? My wifi is good, so probably because the tablet can't handle it maybe?
I was also wondering, should i be using the default mx player or the special ones like armv6 or armv7?
And, was also wondering if it's possible to access external hard drives from this as well? I can access my C drive, but my external G drive with all the movies and music can't be reached.
Thanks again!

You will be asked what app to use to open a file if you have more than one app that can open the file and none of them are set as the default app for such file. I believe defaults are cleared if you install a new app that is capable of running a file. For example, if you recieve an e-mail with a web link and you click on that link, the browser that opens the link is obviously the default app. If you install a new browser then try to open that link again, you should get a prompt asking you which app you want to use. This is where you would decide if you want to use a particular app for all future instances of opening a link (at least until you get a new browser or do an update on the non-default browser). I've seen some apps show up on the choice box that had nothing to do with that particular file type. I always try each one before I select 'always' on the selection box.
I'm able to run movies that are in excess of 1GB. No issues with lagging. Could be your PC delaying or stuttering the transmission of the file. Could be your wifi activity, if you have other devices doing network tasks it could be hogging your bandwidth. Reboot the PC and the tablet after you have got them working together. Might help.
The MX Player app should detect your configuration and suggest you install the additional apps such as the ARMV6. I use an Asus TF700 for these apps, so I don't know what you would need for your device.
External drives are accessable. If they have sharing enabled and you have set a share name (all done in windows sharing). You see in my screenshot that I have several external drives (FreeAgent Go Flex and JVC camcorder are USB2.0 connections).

one other option...
That app that duck mentioned above seemed very interesting and I am going to try it out myself! One other option you can do to move files back and forth from PC to tablet and vise versa is an "ftp server app". You can get many of these apps for free from the Google store. All you do is download the ftp server app and setup a login and pass. Then you download an ftp client for windows such as filezilla (which is my favorite). Now you just connect to the IP address and port number given by the ftp app running on your tablet. Now you can transfer files back and forth very easily! The best part of this is that one, its completely free and two, your tablet does not need to be rooted.
Also you should look for the Samsung usb drivers so you can connect your tablet that way and move files from your PC to your tablet or sdcard of tablet very easy. You can find these USB drivers here on this forum or with a simple Google search. If for some reason you can't find them let me know and I will post you a link.
Oh, and if you are looking for a way to control your PC remotely, look into team viewer it is such a great app, the absolute best!
I hope that has helped you out,

Sorry ink I thought you only wanted to transfer files from PC to tablet, not play/stream files that on your PC from your tablet. However, if you move the files over to your tablet, especially movies they will play better, and then you can always delete the file to free up the space. I see you are having trouble playing videos with MX player...
Try mobo player or v player both of those work great for me...
I hope that what I said above helps you out, there is always more than one way to do things.

[APP] Droid2Desk - now with alpha release(s)

So I've been working on a small project in my spare time with my Nexus One (although is should work with any Android 2.0+ device). Basically it allows you to connect to your phone via WiFi and do a few different things like view/send SMS, view notifications, remotely control the camera and/or transfer files to and from the device. It's a work in progress, I just figured I'd post some screenshots here to see what kind of interest is out there.
An example of a few notifications:

}
Showing some extra details about the device we are connected to:
SMS view (show's all the current SMS conversations on the device)
and of course, an individual conversation view that allows you to carry on an SMS conversation
Remote camera control. Currently it does stills, but I'm going to work in some video as well. Not sure how much demand there is to turn an Android phone into a WiFi spy camera
That's it for now. Should I keep developing this beast or what?
edit:
It also runs on any platform that supports Java. Here it is on a CentOS linux box
Edit - alpha release post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8148550&postcount=170
Ok, first off let me stress this fact:
THIS IS ALPHA SOFTWARE!
This is only being released here to get it running on a few different devices and see if it complete implodes or not. There are lots of bugs and lots of things that aren't close to being finished. I just don't want to put in tonnes of development time only to find out it only works on my Nexus One. If you're an Android/computer noob, this probably isn't for you. Also note, a WiFi connection is required for this to work.
There are two pieces to the application
Android Application (Droid2Desk.apk)
This is to be installed on your device and currently you must manually start it to enable Droid2Desk to work. In the future this will most likely be a self starting service. The first thing to do is install the apk, start Droid2Desk, tap to stop the service, set the name of your device and enter a password, then tap to restart the service. Note that when you install the apk it needs a lot of permissions. These are all required for the functionality provided by the application. Currently, if you want to receive notifications on your desktop you must go into Settings, Accessibility and enable the Droid2Desk accessibility service. This allows ALL notifications on your device to be captured by Droid2Desk. This may or may not change in the future.
Desktop Application (Droid2Desk_xxxxxx.zip)
This zip file contains an executable Java JAR file along with some prerequisite files required to run Droid2Desk. It should run on any OS that supports Java. Extract everything in the zip to a folder, maintaining the folder structure. On most systems you can simply double click Droid2Desk.jar and it will launch. If this doesn't work, navigate to a command prompt/terminal and run the application with "java -jar Droid2Desk.jar". Once the application is started, it should find your android device and you will be able to Connect, enter the password you picked above and hit Connect again. At this point, Droid2Desk will connect to your device and sync some information. The first time you do this it may take a minute.
You are now in the main application. If you get a notification on your device, it should show in the Notifications Tab. The Camera tab should allow you to snap a picture (the Droid2Desk application must be in the foreground on your device for now). The SMS tab should show you all your conversations and allow you to continue them. You can't start a new conversation yet! Finally the files tab, should show you a tree with your sdcard contents and you should be able to navigate the directories. You can't download or upload yet.
I think that's enough to get you running. If anything goes really wrong, screen shots and device specs are a must. I'm going to sit on development for a day or so until I see what kind of feedback I get here. As I said previously, I don't want to get too far ahead until I have some idea if this works for others.

Video is an absolute. I use droid cam (wifi video) to watch the babies remotely, use on a laptop with no camera, tour my house and also caught a little sh*thead throwing rocks at my house with it. Wifi streaming video webcam rocks!
awesome work!, keep working...!
sounds amazing. i'd pay for it.

You can have a full sms conversation on your PC, everything is routed through the phone.
I have a friend who was just about to start development on a way to send MMS/SMS through his phone, I'm sure he's interested.
I don't text much, but overall this program is pretty cool, particularly if as said, if you can stream video or series of snapshots.

Just found it in the market and was gonna make a post about it here. After fooling around with the app on my phone, I have to say it's pretty impressive for a first release. This is the first music app that I've seen that has basic UI elements well implemented. Definitely replacing Doubletwist on my phone.
Just connected my winamp through wifi. currently transfering new music to my phone over wifi. Works just like when you normally hook up devices with usb. About 10-15 secs per song to transfer.
Wow, that's impressive. Getting now

Love it, replacing MixZing... but I cant manage to set the lock screen widget be the only lock screen...
I can't seem to figure out where to go in Winamp to sync via Wifi. I've checked all through the menus, and I'm not seeing anything. Running the latest version of Winamp too. Any help?
Pretty good but I'd still like to see the add/remove button for songs.
i.e closer to the vintage winamp <3.0 look
My only issue with WinAmp (for the pc) is that even though I have a pro license, it always crashes after exactly 5 hours of use. Doesn't matter what I'm doing. Hopefully the android app is a little better.
Not bad at all but pale in comparision to PowerAMP.
Those who try out Winamp should also try PowerAMP below You will not regret.

I don't know about you guys, but it's not showing up under Portables. I am connected to my home wifi and have wifi enabled in the Winamp settings. Is there some search function that we have to do?
it doesn't recognize your pre-existing songs on your android as being the same as your computer. it wants to re-copy them (presumably to a winamp folder on the android).
Then it doesn't exactly ask where to put them... making me think it's going on the internal SD card.... eh.
Hope they fix that in the next release.
I really wish CyanogenMod's "press trackball twice to skip track" feature worked with this media player, as it only seems to work with the stock music player
Update:
It copies all your music folders via WiFi to / , effectively making browsing supremely difficult.
It also manages to copy music to two different folders depending on if you connect via WiFi or USB, so if you finish copying via WiFi, then connect using USB, it tries to duplicate every song, and comes up with an error message that you don't have any free space left.
What the ???

This is a movie manager for your tablet (and soon phone running ICS).
Your movies and TV shows are identified and in just one click you could watch them with your favorite player.
free version (no ads) :

paid version with UPnP/DLNA support :
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.adree.moviebrowser.upnp
little bump just to let you know the app now support samba (without root) and new layouts for ICS phones.
best wishes
Hi
Great app just got the paid version. Me I had trouble since my server lost often upnp connectivity but samba as protocol overcomes this problem. Nevertheless further improvements are visible. I would like to remove manually some movies it detects and would like as well to manually change some movie information.
I think especially for series the automatic detection works only poorly.
Hope some will be fixed in next update.
Keep up the good work !
nice i think but to try
Thanks for the feedback,
I know I need to work on a way to manually identify series, atm I'm working on some little UI improvment like creating tabs for video sources and grouping by seasons then I will work on that for sure.
Regards
Hi welcome
Actually I judged a little bit too fast, most series I was able now to include. Is there a way to differentiate between the different seasons ? For example I do have multiple Dexter seasons but can't distinguish them until I click on one of the item. Then it would say season 1 or 2 but they do have the same icons...
Would this work with a Pogoplug device as well? The device support UPnP so I guess it would right?
Obviously yes, and in case the device as trouble to be recognised you can still use Samba.
If you want to be sure try the free version, the browser in the setup screen will show your device if its recognised.
Great App!!!
This is a great app I got the paid version.
Just finished renaming a bunch of my TV episodes.
Some of my movies didn't translate to the right IMBD number Example: 2012: Ice Age was resolved as Ice Age:continental Drift with is a Animated Movie. Not sure if there is another option to maybe include more description in my File Name to get the right movie.
I need some help with the Samba settings in moviebrowser and windows 7. Is it possible to look at the movies over 3G?
[Edit] I figured it out to configure samba in my own network, but over the internet seems it be a bit more complicated.
Hi
thanks for the latest update, really brought some improvements!
Any progress on two important points, manual editing and manual removal of unwanted
movies ? The first one I overcame now by just renaming the files, but the second one
keeps being a little bit annoying. For example I do have a few movies which
then contain several video files, only one being the actual movie. Not being able
to remove the other ones adds unwanted extra films which I cant remove.
Keep on , updating !
@sweborn : To browse over the INTERNET you should look at upnp/dlna. some servers offer this option and its easily/safely configurable.
@ebioman : Its coming soon now have lot of idea in mind its just a matter of prioritizing.
best regards
Does it work on smartphone?
Just want to say I love this app and bought the pro UPNP version!
I was so happy to see the addition of the TVDB api and I just LOVE the ability to fold all seasons into one using tabs!
Great Feature since I have a lot of TV stuff on my Server.
But there are still some bugs in the scraping aspects.
For one I can't seem to get the Looney Tunes collection to scrape properly. I know this is a special case as it uses years for Season Info not the usual 01,02 Etc...
S00 Scrapes properly but I suspect in the API implementation you may be truncating the season as the 4 number seasons do not seem to scrape properly and be incorporated into the season.
I also have an issue with remakes such as Day of the Dead where both wind p with the newer icon despite proper year being noted in the title.
Again I would suspect the full title (like the fll season number) is being truncated somehow.
As to what everyone else said I would love to be able to manually edit the Images and descriptions for movies I have that would not scrape because they are personal or un documented.
But all that aside I love this program you made!
EDIT: One feature I would like to see added is if the default meta source (in my case MovieDB and TVDB) comes up empty that the program should also look at IMDB

Well for one your selections for players are limited by the filetype your trying to play and where your playing it from.
You choose the video player on first play and I suspect you may have set one as the default which would inhibit the program from asking again.
What player does it default to on playback?
Find that player in you Settings Applications and clear any defaults it has set.
Go back to Movie browser, try and play something and it should pop up a list of the players it can use.
If your bsplayer doesn't show in that list then it doesn't support that filetype.
If you don't check use player by default it will ask you for which player to use each time.
Filemasks for search?
Any chance to get exclusion filemasks for search setup? For example the recordings from my htpc all have the channel name being included as part of name being searched: Example: "A Walk in the Clouds WWLFDT2" and the lookup fails due to the channel name...exclusion filemasks could be added so that _WWLFDT2_ in the filename gets converted to just "_" before doing a search.
Any chance we can have a version that works on Android 2.3?
I just bought a media player an having this app would be awesome
its this one btw.

Been using this for a while on my tablet (TF101) and has been great (uPNP version)!
just got a google tv box (logitech revue) and have downloaded this for its primary use on there (I have ESFile Explorer and GTVBox players installed, vplayer and other not working) - seeing the following issues:
1. The view in google TV means that you can only see 2 movies at a time, makes it quite slow to move around - can you a include a specific theme for gtv (for me, would be a wallpaper of all covers, with a second page for individual movie details?)
2. I cannot get a movie to play from the browser - it seems to be favouring GTVBox over ES video player (even though no defaults are set) and goes to a blank screen with the honeycomb circle (please wait) showing continuously
I have the movie files on an external hard drive connected to the USB input, so no uPNP issues to worry about - I will try moving a movie onto the internal memory tonight to see if that changes anything??
any tricks to try would be appreciated - looking for this to be my main app on the lgoitech (so that my son lets me have my tablet back!)
Improvements for GTV
I am actually glad I read this. GTVBox has been giving me headaches in the video streaming category & I was curious about this on when looking through Google Play. Other than the issues below are you planning on adding a more in-depth video search? Most of my videos are in their own sub-folders & they are divided up by genre.
Plus I did see that the app appears to go to the GTVBox video player which makes me apprehensive in purchasing the full version. If you can add like genre folders & have the app point to the default player when selecting a movie I'd by this in a heartbeat. But seriously, 15min is not enough time for me to fully test out the paid version to see if this is what I am looking for.
I am impressed with the movie database look-up though, really cool!

So, @Chainfire was kind enough to drop root on us today.
That means all bets are off. I got a Nexus Player early because I am a big HTPC enthusiast, as well as an avid Android Tweaker. I live to rip apart my OS and tailor it like a weird suit only I could love.
So, just flashed CF's rootboot, and it worked wonderfully. Given that I can now not only decompile and recompile lollipop APK's at will and modify system files...well...we can do anything.
For starters, I definitely want to make Google Play Movies uninstallable. I have Plex and a ton of content, and I don't want to have google movie suggestions cluttering up my screen. So let's make a script that can dump it to /data. Hell, toss music over there too.
How about re-ordering the home screen so the apps we want take first slots...not google's stuff.
I'm sure we can also have some more fun. If the bootloader is insecure, we can unpack the boot image, add init.d support and maybe tune some of Google's stock settings...see if we can get it to render HD content a little snappier.
So yeah. Hello everybody with a Nexus Player. I'm Digitalhigh. I've tried to do awesome things for people who have had the Evo 3D, M7, M8, and a few other random devices, and now I'm going to take a crack at the Nexus Player.
Let me know if you have any other ideas you'd like to see materialized.
Sounds good!
I think my number one pet peeve is not being able to re-arrange the apps how I see fit (even the "bump to the front the apps you use most" feature as google supposedly designed isn't working). I'd actually love to have a "pinned" row above all others with my favorite shortcuts, in the order I want them.
A close second fix would be the ability to surface non-TV optimized apps directly on the main interface, on a per app basis.
I love that the NP is now open for business.
Anyway we can get it setup so we can select the output resolution and possibly adjust for overscan. Also see if we can get some surround sound support. Seems that only google play movies outputs dolby digital.

Same here! I just did my first bit of system magic, completely obliterating play movies and tv, just to make sure the system wasn't dependent on it somehow. It's not, and I'm happy.
I will do a pull of /data, go through the XML and db's and see what settings are available to us. It'd either be in /data, or maybe a default settings bit somewhere in the UI apk that sets the default layout.
For adding non-TV apps to home menu...I forget the name, but there is an android APK out there that will let you link to specific activities in an app and make a shortcut for it on the home of launcher...I wonder if it would work with this.

Again, I'll look at what settings are available. I'll also pull down the factory image for it and see what we have available there. Just because we don't have an installer for it, doesn't mean we can't flash custom software and stuff through bootloader...kinda similar to my Rockchip RK808 android on a stick.
Oh, and I know it's a pain...but get the plexpass for a month or two. The plex for plex pass app works BEAUTIFULLY with this. I know it sucks having to pay, but versus sideloading the regular apk...it's so gorgeous...and it integrates into the home screen and searches. Only beef with it is that it's a bit laggy over AC for 1080...can't wait for my OTG cable and USB hub w. integrated NIC.
Edit: Oh, and it was sending 5.1 audio to the stereo.

So excited! I wish I knew more so I could help. I'm still just figuring how to setup the android sdk lol. But anyways, I guess what I'd like to see are my own apps in the home screen and all of the content at the top that Google shoves in our faces removed. If there's anything I can do to help get all of this awesomeness going just hit me up! ?
I sideloaded the plex apk from my logitech revue. It has the android tv interface. I dont know how up to date it is compared to thr plex pass version. But it works. But its only outputting 2.0 audio. According to the plex forum its because it uses the internal android player. That doesnt support surrounf sound.

So, @Chainfire was kind enough to drop root on us today.

You can turn off notifications for Google Play Movies (or any other app) and it wont show suggestions.
Looking forward to whatever else you may be able to come up with regards to customization.
I had to RMA my original unit, so I am waiting to get the new one before I root.
I'm just glad you're here. I was beginning to get nervous... it seems almost nobody has been talking about the Nexus Player. I have no development experience, but would be happy to test/help in any way needed. Keep that in mind.

Calendar
I would love to get google calendar working, (can sideload but won't open) Would love to be able to sync my calendar to this device for morning viewing.
Third party apps will install (business calendar) but you cannot sync for some reason.

This is probably best as a separate topic in the Q&A section, but have you checked in settings under your user name? there is a sync section. is calendar listed there at all? I can't check at the moment, but something you can try.

Any chance we could use this app to capture/stream spotify/pandora to a dlna receiver?
if not, is that something that could be added?

Hello @levuphuong,
I tried your app. It works with my samsung smart TV after setting the device (OnePlus X) as server from settings. After some minutes it showed content in "home" and played it on the TV, although pause and transport didn't work (they showed an "unsupported" notification on the TV).
I was taking a look around for some DLNA implementation on Android, as I wanted to include a "transmit via DLNA" feature in my app; something similar to the Samsung app "smart view" or the "cast" option for media file in my OPX; simply click on the file and share it to the TV.
Black screen and no detecting of media
Appearently at startup the app is searching the lan for dlna servers. During that time there is just nothing like a black screen, and it blocks any other operation on my device. So it looks like the app crashed. It would be better to have a screen with a moving bar which informs about the state of the app. When it comes back after a long time, it discovered a dlna server on another computer in my network. But it does not show media, so nothing to play. There are even no directories for vidro, audio, and pics.
So at the moment not usable. My device is a JiaYu S3 3GB

i think that problem happens when you enable your phone as dlna server and return home (it needs time to start server in phone). May be I need to improve it.
And some server show nothing because you didn't add media to that server. Recommend to use Tverisy for PC. it is free and really good.
Thanks
OK, thanks for your answer!
