Tablet iOS or Android or Completly Different? - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys,
im just thinking about buying a tablet.
Just dont know which one.
What would you guys recommend?
Thanks so far,
beastlyy:good:

Well it totally depends on whether your an apple or android fan. Personally I would go with android. I think Apple is a fad. I think they are for people who are not good with technology because they are simple to use. Of course iOS is good, but in my opinion you get more bang for your buck with Android.

It depends also on devices you already have,...if you already have Apple hardware, such as iPhone, AppleTV, etc. I would recommend to buy an iPad,.....otherwise I would prefer an Android tab, e.g. the Nexus 10

Ok,
got an Samsung Galaxy S2 and now a HTC One X.
Years ago i got an apple iphone 3s but didnt like it that much.
Gonna check out the Nexus10 thy

Wote for Android..Nexus 10 , Galaxy Note 10.1..

Wife has iPad. It is ok. But the problem with Apple makes you feel like your trapped in a box. IOS is a very strict and structure platform, and you can't get away from iTunes or the store. Now android allows you more freedom and better experience.

It depends on how you define 'better experience'. iPads give a far better experience than Android tablets IMO because of tablet optimised apps. You don't get anywhere near enough tablet specific apps on Android. Android is the best OS for smartphones in my mind without a doubt, but not for tablets.

imho if its for serious use go for a blackberry playbook imho, otherwise go for a nexus, finally apple

I recommended the Ipad for my technically challenged sister, but for myself I go with nexus 10 and android, I don't like being fenced in!

My mom is computer-challenged, but doing fine with a TF700. It's even easier for her than her regular Windows laptop.
I'd base a buying choice on what I wanted to do with the tablet. I lean toward Android simply because you have so many options.

Nexus S and iPad best combo?

I came from an iphone 4 and I'm now loving the nexus and android operating system. I'm looking for a tablet to compliment my phone and can't decide on the iPad or Xoom. I love certain aspects of iOS including speed of browser and the large number of apps and I've already purchased a bunch. Honeycomb also doesn't seem fully developed yet. I figure with nexus and iPad I get the best of both worlds. Thoughts?

Welcome to android. When it comes to tablets I'd advise against either of the two at the moment. The ipad is basically a giant iphone and the xoom is too new. If you want a tablet this month I'd suggest the asus Eee pad transformer, but the market for tablets is catching fire and come august you'll be able to get kalel powered quad cores and ice cream sandwiches.

I have an ipad. Id say go with that because honeycomb doesn't have many apps and although the ipad seems like a giant iPod, its not. I tether the phone with it and its great for browsing and viewing documents and emails and watching movies. Plus I like having one ios device because there are so many apps for it. so i say get the ipad. I love the Combo.

I'm leaning towards an iPad because then I can have apps for either OS. Also have a MacBook Pro at home that integrates with it perfectly.

I'm planning on buying a tablet any day now, and the Xoom was my plan. I want to see why you think an ipad is better based on your description of what you do. Browsing: android 3.0 essentially has chrome on it=win. Viewing documents: I'm not sure of the honeycomb support, but in terms of pdfs adobe is there, and for basic docs google docs has that down. The email/gmail applications on the ipad and xoom are basically identical, and watching movies would seem better since the xoom has a higher res screen (although the ipad is brighter). Yes there are many iOS apps, but what does that matter if you don't use them. Could you name some that the the Xoom doesn't have? I can't see what else you would want that android doesn't have. If you have any in mind let me know, I can still be swayed towards an ipad.
I don't mean to rub anyone the wrong way......or the right way, but I just don't see how that argument is very good.
If you have an android phone I think iPad its nice complement for some games not available on android like asphalt, field runners, plants vs zombies as well as others for your kids and adults.

I couldn't imagine paying for the same apps twice.
I have a gTablet running Vegan 5.1.1, overclocking the Tegra2 to 1.4 ghz. It's really fast, runs the apps I need/want...think LogMeIn Ignition, Quick Office, Need For Speed, Netflix (with a little hack). The gTab cost me $285 with no more need to spend on apps. I don't feel like I need a $50 case for it. An old netbook sleeve works fine. I sync it with iTunes via iSyncr WiFi on my HTPC Mac Mini. the battery lasts for over 8 hours. When I need to get real work done on the go, I take my 11" Macbook Air w/BootCamp Win7 with me instead of the gTab.
I like the iPad/2, but just really don't want to fragment my mobile apps...just doesn't make sense.
...oh, and the Gtab has Honey Comb. Not quite 100%, but rapidly getting there.
I would also say ipad you can purchase/rent movies plus all the apps. I love Google but I'm not a Motorola fan and the Xoom is in my opinion the only viable Android option now. Not to mention there are not that many dedicated 3.1 apps yet.

I wouldn't pay for the same apps twice. I have apps I already paid for with my iPhone. I would buy apps for the iPad that android doesn't offer.

I also have the Gtablet running vegan 7 ginger edition, while a decent tablet at a great price, the iPad has a much better screen both visually and functionally (better touch response). I suspect the screen on the xoom is equal or better than iPad

I have the Nexus S, an iPad and an Apple TV 2 which i use for Xbmc. I plan to get an android tablet because so far there's nothing major that I have on iOS that Android doesn't have. Splashtop, RTM, Pandora, Netflix, Lastpass, XBMC remote, Tweetdeck are all available on Android. You may have to wait a few months for them to be optimized for tablets, but the same thing happened when I got the iPad

Ahh...then go for what you like the best....sounding like the iPad2. It's the best tablet out right now, depending on your budget.
I have a Nexus S and an ipad 2. I think for now it is a good combo. I am loving Android, but I find the honeycomb tablets with tegra 2 chips a little disappointing. I suggest waiting for the hc hardware to mature before buying.

I wasn't really doing a comparison. I was just saying that I have an ipad and nexus s like the op is thinking about doing. The things I use it for the ipad does perfectly. apps like keynote and penultimate are hard to beat, as is the fluid browsing on the ipad. It just gets the job done for me and I prefer having one ios device since both OS's are nice. Plus the 8-10 hour battery life is nearly impossible to beat. I was just talking about my experience and how I'm satisfied. That's what she said.

Get the Xoom or wait for another Android tablet then.
How can you have flash support on your phone but not on your tablet where you require a full web experience?
The only thing I reckon that's better about the iPad is the fluidity but that that has been countered well in later versions of Android. I used the Xoom for a whole day and I didn't notice any lag or problems like that. Some apps are not tablet optimised but Honeycomb is brand new and Google are really on top of their mobile game these days it seems, so development will come soon.
Most good apps are available on Android or they have their own (sometimes better) counterparts and alternatives to the iOS apps.
Apple has good technology, I just can't understand why they don't want to implement it in their mobile iOS devices.
I never missed flash on my iPhone and after using the Nexus S for two weeks I think I used it once to view a menu at a local restaurant. That's def not a deciding factor for me. Still on the fence just seems redundant to have two Android devices for me. If I get an iPad I can ensure I can access any mobile apps released.

What do Inspire owners prefer, iPad or Google pad? And why?

All I want for Christmas is my...... I was wondering what fellow Inspire/android users are crushing on when it comes to a pad. I LOVE android with its different spaces, the HTC sense, hundreds of ROMs and widgets. Unfortunately, the iPad is kinda sweet and no one android pad has caught up. For me, I would go for an iPad simply because android lacks that one stop usability for everything that Apple has, andoid pads are overpriced and android is missing a killer office suite. If Microsoft made office lite for android and prices were lowered by 20%, android would make a dent.
Until then, I'm crushing on the iPad 3.
What do y'all think?

So it basically makes a nice colorful paperweight/kindle. ;p Most of my work is word processor/calendar/ppt intensive. I think the Atrix is a great idea if it could be perfected so that we could have a phone/pad or computer that would be our source for presentations and for sites we could use some more space on.

Played with iPad but lacked without micro sd support, hdmi out and full usb port. Use an Archos 101 Internet Tablet 8gb and now the Acer Iconia A500 and really enjoy it. It all seems to be what system and build fits your needs or your preferences. Just throwing this out there for anyone who may be interested, selling the Archos...

Picked up the Jetstream last week and love it! Much prefer it to the ipad. The price is high but I think the specs will pay off in the longterm.
On this size screen I prefer the normal sites vs apps or mobile so the lack of honeycomb apps isn't a big deal.

My children love their $700 toy that is the iPad. Personally I am not crazy about tablets, I prefer my laptop. Anything I would do on a tablet I can do on my phone or laptop. This is just a personal opinion of course, if I traveled a lot, I would probably find a tablet more appropriate because of size. All that being said, I would love to sell my iPad that I haven't used in probably 8 months, but my wife won't let me because the kids love it. If I did purchase another tablet, it would be an Android powered tablet just because I prefer Android over iOS and it would probably be the Asus Transformer

Heh well until the ipad dies I am on gadget restriction as per my wife. My MacBook died a while back so I bought a new laptop without discussing it with my wife(asking for permission) so I am not allowed to buy anything until something else dies. Not really in the market for another tablet anyway, its just not practical for me. I would buy a new phone before I would buy another tablet

I have an iPad2 and enjoy it quite a bit, but I am basically an Apple guy (more Apple gear around here than I care to admit) and the iPad fits in well with the Apple ecosystem. (And yes, I own an Inspire 4G but until I bought it, I was a solid iPhone man).
Truth be told though, if the Jetstream had existed when I bought my iPad, I would have SERIOUSLY considered it instead. That is one sweet machine.
Liked the Viewsonic G-Tab, then sold it on Ebay and bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1", when Staples had the $100 off coupon. Couldn't be happier!
Asus transformer, B70 model and rooted ...
But seriously android tablet is insanely customizable, I had an ipod touch 4 and sold it. Why? Because even jailbroken customization was extremely limited.

New iPad in the house

My wife has never embraced anything in the technological realm but when all her girlfriends started getting iPads, she felt like she was missing something and decided to climb on board. I actually encouraged this because I knew that she would become addicted to the usefulness of a tablet in very short time. That would bring an end to the evil looks I get every time I pick up a new toy such as my GTab.
We picked up the New iPad today. I compared it side by side to the iPad 2 and while the screen was better, I did not see a huge improvement in everyday usage. Sure, movies and photos looked a little better but all the other apps displayed about the same to me.
This is our family's first iPad so a lot of this stuff is new to me. On the negetive side, it is clear that the closed environment that defines Apple makes things a lot less fun and can be limiting, On the other hand, I have to admit that this thing is smooth as silk. Even better, it integrates with other Apple devices easily and seamlessly. We both have iPhones so sending free texts and making Facetime video phone call between the phones and the iPad is really easy and fun. I did not realize that you could make free video calls between Apple devices without using any 3G data as long as both devices are hooked up to WIFI. Very cool.
It will be a while before I can provide a real comparison between the New iPad and my GT 10.1 but I do have some first impressions. One thing that Apple has always been able to provide is a useful device that simply works... period. The new iPad is no exception.
On the other hand, some of the apps that I rely on all the time, such as a GPS app that does not require a 3G connection, are not currently available for the iPad. If you have a WIFI only device and cannot use it as a GPS, that is a big negetive.
Also on the negetive side is how the New iPad heats up while in use. This device will absolutely require a case on the back side to dissipate the heat. It is unclear to me at this point if the different form factor will produce a less enjoyable viewing experience for movies and for reading ebooks but the shape is certainly something that sets the iPad apart from the GTab.
More later.
Bob
no SIRI on ipad3 either.
How stupid
Apple does SUCH a good job at building the hardware & providing software updates. But sucks in terms of OPEN-ness.
Samsung cant even get ANYONE ICS. phone or pad. its turning into a giant joke
I've had a few mobile Apple devices before, and they are indeed smooth as silk. I personally wish Android was just as smooth, not because I care, but because that's how average users judge a device. (not really sure why)
In my opinion much more people would choose Android over Apple if the animations were stripped out, and they made their decision purely based on the features given. The only thing I ever liked about Apple was how you could keep your devices in sync, but now that Google Play is out Google gains a win in that category as well. (keep in mind I hate iTunes, it's a POS on Windows)
iPads are pretty entertaining though, I've seen some people pick them up just so they can swipe between homescreens. lol

I had been wondering how it'd compare... Thanks for the thread.
Just curious, how does the 10.1 display fare against the "revolutionary" ipad3 display?
ICS will soon be rolling out for the 10.1 and it will be as smooth as butter~
Currently running ICS on my GS2, it is amazing - as smooth as IOS but alot faster!
Currently on the 10.1v which is running on normal TFT LCD, im thinking of comparing it with the the 10.1 PLS/IPS LCDs... it's a great tab but i just feel deprived of pretty colours...
Thanks for the comparison. Apple makes good products, and they certainly have the marketing down.
I thought this was kind of funny.

I know that the iPad screen is better but the GTab is still pretty darn good. Based on my observations, the GTab screen is probably somewhere between the older and new iPad. Please keep in mind that there is no noticeable difference until you get into viewing photos or high-def movies.
If it were me, I would not have spent the extra money for the New Ipad, choosing instead to pick up a discounted older model if I had to have an iPad. I cannot see much difference between the new one and the iPad 2.With my wife, there is the "Coolness" factor to be considered so that is the direction we went.
Those of us who have gotten used to the freedom that rooted Android tablets offer can sit back and smile knowingly when the iPad fanboys and girls go all giggly about this new version. While I was forking over $540 for my wife's new toy, I asked the very helpful girl at the Apple store if there was an app for the iPad that would turn it into a GPS device that would work when not connected to WIFI or 3G. She said no and then gave me an incredulous look when I showed her the CoPilot app running on my GTab.
Apple products are great but it would be a mistake to make the assumption that they are always better than the competition. If my wife asked me to trade my GTab for her new iPad, I would have to turn her down.
Just one guy's opinion.

As much as I adore my Gtab its the lack of quality tablet apps presently on android that let's it down, the openness of Android is far superior than the closed eco system of iOS but jailbreaking it allows some extra useful tweaks, had an iPod touch before and jailbreaking it opened it up a little with customisation of icons and such.

androids dead.. wait a minute

http://m.blogs.computerworld.com/20...com/2012/05/android/androids-minute-wait-dead.
Hope the link works. In before this is old news noob search first.
Tldr: android holds 51% of all smart phones in use. Apple 30%
I feel like this 'majority' share type story has been published over and over.
Also one company with 30% of market share probably is > than many companies with 51%. Maybe a big one like Samsung has 30% of that 51%?

If other companies were allowed to release ios devices I dony doubt the number being higher. I guess iPhone users were going around saying iPhone has sold more numbers and theres more iPhones being used than and how android has slowed down in sales due to the new iPhone.
It was more an article that says android is more popular than iPhone in terms of the number of users than anything.
Its because android runs on so many price brackets its available to everyone from low end to way above anything iPhone could ever be android is a platform for everyone and I love it that way

I wonder if that guy had both a Lumina and an iPhone in his ass to assist typing that article.
Lots of different stories on this today, but beyond the Android dominance is Samsung kicking ass in general.
"Samsung now sells one in four US smart phones" : http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/05/02/prweb9467359.DTL
Not far behind Apple, and when you factor in that at least 26% of the parts used in making iPhones are made by Samsung, guess who's really at the top...
Love Sammy. May the ass kicking continue!

Let's tell it how it is. Neither android or iPhone are going anywhere and are making stupid amounts of money off of us.

How the world turns. I remember when i see samsung products at kmart as the el cheapo brand 15 years ago. And now they are bigger than Sony.
true all true. If you look at the big picture, iPhone has integrated most media devices to work cohesively, syncing all with that wretched iTunes. Samsung has gone a drop further and integrated Android or Android compatible software into everything they sell: washer/dryer, fridge, camera, windows (the kind you look through), phones, tablets, printers, etc. Samsung wants to be a powerhouse, quite literally. I really do think this step is a well thought out program.

Man, I hate itunes! Worst thing, ever!
Apple is doing great business. Brainwash users to believe that cheaper smaller screens is what they want and that they should pay a premium price. And that not having Flash, external memory card slot is something in their best interest. Never mind the fact that people still use flash on their computer browsers on the average a dozen times a day. And if they had a memory card slot, they would probably have a memory card in there. Point out something Apple is doing to rip off their customers, and the customers who are being taken advantage of are on the side of Apple.
How hard can Apple squeeze the teets of their users until they say uncle?

Actually I gotta thank apple for not including flash. It really is finally dying to html5 and that is a GREAT thing. I don't think people realize how many flash like elements are not actually flash anymore. HTML5 is all over the place now. Apple and facebook have been the main reason for flash to die
I do find it funny that most of your issues with iPhones are now the "big thing" with newer androids.

I have read this week that apple sold 35 million phone in Q1 2012 and samsung 41 million in Q1 2012.
Ok samsung has tons of different phone but they still kicking ass right now. And when the S3 come out sale will probably explode... same thing for the next iphone ... lets see how it goes.
I think the title should read everything but android and iPhone is dead. Which is true I think

Apple is 1 company, android is a ****load of companies, realistically they should be doing better than one company anyways.
What we need is a good profit graph that shows what platform is actually generating money because that's the one which will be around the longest.

Maybe you mean iOS versus android. But to compare HTC Samsung, Motorola, lg, etc, I think all those companies combined will outweigh apple in sales dramatically. So how do you really measure apple versus android in sales?

Percentage of retention would probably be the most accurate mark of who is doing best. How many Droid users stay on Droid and how many switch to iPhone. And same on the other side. Higher retention is really who is winning. I know about a year and a half ago an article I read said at the time apple had a higher rentention than Droid.

[DISCUSSION] Ipad mini copied Nexus 7

OK so i have a nexus 7 and lately i have been noticing how much
the iPad mini looks basically exactly the same just with a added
button. Now we all know android had the first 7 inch tablet (dell streak 7)
and now suddenly apple has a idea to make a 7 inch tablet??
and of course the sneaky guys at apple made sure to make it a little
bigger to avoid a lawsuit but my theory still stands that apple has copied
the nexus 7. i mean its not like apple hasn't been accused of this in
the past when they were accused of stealing the iPhone design from Sony
so is apple really that pathetic that they will steal an idea then patent it?
see attachments for picture comparisons and tell me what you think
Apple is fine. They didn't copy anything. I'd rather have the iPad mini. It has a back camera and can play games smoother. Ikr

Then why be on a site dedicated to android development if your a crapple fan
im what Willis was talking about
Grow up its a free world we do as we please, apple = awesome
Android = awesome. This is the silliest topic I've ever read, how is anything copying when wed have a lawsuit for copyright infringement, apple aren't known for immitating, only making things well!

Don't really care. I think it's pretty widely known that Apple didn't invent anything. "Great artists steal" has always been the company's mantra. Way I see it, if people want to pay twice as much or more for last year's tech in a stylish enclosure with a fruit logo on the back, that's fine. I'm all for choice.
The Android community doesn't have anything to lose from Apple taking our sloppy seconds and marking it up 200% or more. Conversely, Android is a threat to Apple -- newer, faster tech, sold for half the price of their junk, or less. That's why Steve Jobs was willing to go "thermonuclear war". Jobs wanted/Apple wants to control the development at mobile hardware, and keep the tech evolution to a much slower pace, to maximize profits. And they're losing, slowly but surely. The latest iPhone hasn't been a high-end device for years, since the 4 or maybe as far back as the 3GS. They just figured out how to get a widescreen display on a mobile device, and it's not even 720p. First-generation Android phones had widescreen. With the sole exception of the case (aluminum and glass IS nice), an iPhone is like a Chinese knockoff of any given top-shelf Android (S3 or DNA, .e.g.).
We have nothing to worry about.

There were 7" tablets long before the Nexus 7. I believe the Galaxy Tab was the first 7" tablet with Google Play access. The iPad Mini looks like the 10" iPad, so I don't think you can say they copied someone else.
What they did copy though was the 7" tablet idea. The late Steve Jobs said 7" tablets would never do well, and the fact that Apple has now put out a 7" tablet is a big indicator that they are now a follower and not an innovator. Although IMO the last innovation they had was the original iPhone. Over 5 years later and that UI looks just as old and outdated as the Luna blue XP theme.

but they said they didn't copy the 7" tablet idea because it's actually 7.9". Couldn't agree more about the unchanged UI over the year. innovation plz.
