Off Topic Thread(V2) - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

First I'd like to say that this thread has MOD approval. I would like to keep it that way so here are some rules:
1) NO FLAMING(this goes for me too, lol)
2) NO NUDITY(I'm just as bummed as you are)
3) NO DRUG TALK(not even weed!)
4) NO POLITICS(Some of us here aren't even old enough to vote)
5) NO RELIGION(if you don't know why google "Holy war". lol)
With those out of the way I hope everyone here enjoys and uses our new place to converse. Please feel free to link people who are getting off topic in other threads to this one as a friendly reminder.
So I guess this is where I start the conversation.
How many of you think that this is a good idea???
LOL

That question seems to have two possible answers...
1) Good... yes... mmmhmm...
2) Ahhh! Off-topic iz teh ebilz! Killz etz wiff fayr!

Hope this works. Please everyone, let's make sure that while this is OT, the XDA rules still apply. This is and will be the ONLY Off-Topic thread started. All others will be closed and re-directed back here.
Keep it clean, but have some fun. OT threads are a great way to filter out rif-raf from the Q&A and Development sections/threads.
Enjoy

I seen one of these in another forum you were a mod in Woody. Its still going semi strong mostly a couple of regulars talking back and forth.
Ill start.
How many of you know the Nexus 4 is available currently in play store. I was able to get my order in. Ill still be poking around but only poking as Im passing this phone to my daughter. Im actually glad jb is progressing. However ultrgen was the bees knees for me until slim b3 was released.

I like the Nexus for a cheap unlocked phone that works on Tmo-Wind networks, but hate that it has no SD card slot and only 16GB max. I don't have a ton of stuff on my SD card but I did have to go from a 16 to 32GB card a while ago just to keep enough music and other things I like on my phone on there. Right now if I buy one and activate it on Wind, I'd get 50$ credit, but meh. lol. Sad thing is this phone will get updates for a while probably while all the other phones don't.
I hate seeing some of the new phones Sammy is releasing, 800mhz processor but JB on it. Can't give us JB.
Part of the problem is our carriers, they are limited in the number of phones they buy for their bands, which limits us too., Is sammy going to release a JB update for the S2 that has 10's of millions of phones, or our phone, that probably is maybe a million or less, so we suffer and S2 users get the goods as well as the new crappy music player galaxy 800mhz phones.
Rain sucks.
Ultragen rocks, it's still my DD and was Remics before that. I like the touchwiz interface and launcher. It's smooth. I don't want 6000 dumb transition effects like loops and twirls and spinny things, just one transition that works well and looks good and I find touchwiz does that.
That is all for now. lol.

I ended up with the S3 for that reason. I get horrible signal at work, on top of not being allowed to have a camera phone, so it stays in my pocket. The horrible signal problem makes it so all of my music has to be on my sdcard. I didn't want to have to fight between music and apps with the Nexus 4.

Ill be getting a chromebook soon so I plan on using that 100gb of google cloud service for music that way I can Keep more with me. The way I look at it you create playlists then sync the playlist to your device. I remember seeing a tasker profile that can do this so I will have to find it.

The limitations and bs they claimed was just to get people to upgrade. I think ST has a lg phone that is running 4.1 and a 800mhz processor. Its not a super phone but it does what most people want which is facebook email and those type of things.

Personally I like adw just for the customization. And it is minor things like only needing four dock icons. There are a couple cool themes but most of the time Im rocking the stock adw theme with some modified icons. I dont know what some of these developers where thinking with the design of their app icon.

Cool. Glad to see everyone enjoying the thread. My next phone will be a Samsung 3.2ghz octi-core phone/tablet/wallet that charges off of body heat. It will have an 25mp camera and 64GB of internal memory with an external SD capable of 128MB. I hear it will be out Spring of 2014. Can't wait. lol

LOL. Nice to have you both here. Might as well invite prbassplayer, oka1, and TRusselo over. My infractions list is the who's who of moderators. Sorry your not on that list Woody. Actually hope that you never have to be.
In all seriousness, though, hopefully you guys will be here just to have a good time chatting things up and not have to actually do any moderation. It's a slim chance but one that I'm hoping occurs.

I recently switched over to the Nexus 4 and am loving it. The phone comes with free 50gb of cloud service, and they sent me an offer to give 50gb to a friend. You can store all of you music on there and just download when needed. I know it's nice to have everything on you sd card but you are never going to listen to that much music at once. Also I assume you have backups of all your music on your pc or elsewhere, but if your sd card crashes or explodes or breaks in half all your files are gone, a little safer on cloud service. I've never heard of anyone losing their files on a cloud server, not saying that it can't happen.
Anyways 16gb (12.92gb actual) is still a lot of room don't let that be your deterrent from purchasing the Nexus.

I'm sorry but all this *****ing is annoying.

I feel like your all crazy!
I've had 2 devices (returned one cause I scratched the screen) and they have both been excellent. No reboots, good battery, no lag, no freezes, dont know or care about backlight bleed, yea reception could be better and I'm sure it will with updates etc... My experience sounds 180° from everyone elses.. This is the best phone I've had by far and I've had a lot.
I'm sick of hearing about people wanting to get a sensation or a sgs2, good for you. You really think it will be issue less? My n1 had issues, vibrant had issues, all other phones had issues, heres what you do...... Get a replacement till you get a good one (except backlight issue cause I think they will all slightly have this, root and wait for community and mod or wait for a official software upgrade...
This phone is solid man.. Good battery, solid hardware, great camera, video camera is great, ips screen is awesome, **** is fast as hell, developers like morfic and paul o'brien and cyanogen are on it, gps works great, data is fast (although could be a tad better reception wise, but new modems will help that) ffc is damn good for a 1.3mp, tegra games should be a bit better this month with galaxy on fire 2 and that wave runner type game, gameloft games are already being optimized for tegra etc...
G2x has everything I want and need out of a new phone. sensation and its locked boot loader sucks ass, sgs2 sounds like gps is still wack (coming from a vibrant this gps is amazing) and the updates only came cause of the #neveragain revolution..
So please, just get a replacement or wait on some fixes. Lets talk about some positivity hear like threads on pictures from our camera or videos taken from our beautiful 1080p video, etc. I don't want to hear about how your ditching this for a unreleased device thats gonna have its own set of issues. Theres already enough topics on issues I'm sure yall can post in those and not make new threads and complaints about old **** or dumb **** like my video camera won't open anyone one else having this issue? Lol trouble shoot yourself and stop crying about every little thing that goes wrong...
Honestly other than reboots and bleeding, everything else is just dumb sorry.....
Positivity yall....

He's complaining because his phone is better than some of us who've received it.
In his world $200-$500 is chump change and in that price bracket minor defects add character and are perfectly acceptable.

Fan-freaking-tastic! good point that's my whole reasoning for returning my G2X. 249.99 + plus taxes plus (amazon 149.99 I know) two year binding contract is alot in my world so when I upgrade I want my device as close to perfection as possible. Sure I know that there will be issues. That being said LCD bleed is complete lack of QC on LG part. Restarts and battery life issues that the android community has to figure is just dumb.
I loved my G2x its a great phone but I'm waiting a month for all the ppls to buy the first line of them. I'll go back and see if they've fixed the problem if not then Ill turn my money toward samsung.
My g2x doesnt have a toilet paper holder. So im returning it and getting a jitterbug. Are there alot of accessories for jitterbug? Like a cardock?

Also I don't believe there are that many battery life issues. Everyone phone has a thread regarding "poor battery life".

You know what I hate? Morons who tell you stop complaining. Funny thing is that's what the nazi's told the Jews as they loaded them onto the trains. Stop complaining? Stay positive? If people didn't complain about BS QC, or something that's not right, or being ripped off, treated unfairly, we would still have indentured servants, slaves, etc. Complaining because you don't LIKE your phone is just stupid. Complaining because the phone is defective, a pos, or similar IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO. Corporations are not out to make you happy. They are out to make money. PERIOD. this why everything is made in China, made with cheap labor and made like crap. The only thing us lowly slugs can do is complain! And if enough consumers complain, only then is there a chance for something like a recall or replacement to happen. If your sick of people complaining then go stick your head in the sand so you wont have to hear about it. Remember: you are CHOOSING to read or hear about complaining. And like the other peeps said...you are complaining about complaining?
"If Satan lived in heaven he'd be me.... "

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I'm keeping my g2x until the new nexus phones come out, and then sticking to pure nexus phones from Google. I'm sick of waiting for venders and carriers to work together for releases, and I'm sick of crap that carriers add to phones which is useless and slows them down. I normally root my phone and install CM on it anyway, but with the g2x even that isn't a 100% working solution anymore.
By the way, I read that Google is releasing up to 5 different nexus phones from different vendors around Thanksgiving this year. I'd wait for that!

No, in fact if you search up my previous post, my G2X, is one of the few that has zero flaws.
I'm jumping ship because the Sensation has more Dev support. (Really a lot of dev) They recently got official CM9.

I'm almost positive this was towards me, and well... ok. Maybe if people actually searched or didn't make retarded threads I wouldn't be, I help when help is needed (as in if someone searches and posts in an already created thread like these ones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449382
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342085
I searched for 10 seconds and found both of these. It's pointless to make a thread like this, especially with the OP's statement, does he want a cookie for wanting a sensation? Lastly OP my interest is not to stock what you have said in other threads, if you make a new thread make it worthwhile to read for the community, not something useless and informative.
Hey XDA I just had Chipotle, and added way too much Cholula to it.
If you're gonna jump ship, just do it.
The community for the G2x has been flawless, but I have seen the future, and I left it for the GS II. Man, they're a live one over there. Everyone's awesome and welcoming; a bit impatient at times when they ask for ROM updates (lol smh), but generally nice people.
Now all the devs here are a capable bunch, and they've managed to do what LG/T-Mobile/Nvidia couldn't do. I've said this time and time again. But without those 3 giving this phone even half of the effort, we suffer ultimately. In Driver support, Camera support, ICS support, annoying bugs going unfixed. The devs have to pick up all the slack, and that sucks. I left because of the circumstances that those 3 have put us in, and I'd say it's a fair assessment.
But if you're gonna jump ship, I suggest you don't do it for whoever gets ICS first. There's no way I would have gone to the Sensation, too many hoops to jump through, S-OFF, bootloader, etc. That phone's pretty thick too, not enough internal memory either (Nice camera though). Jump when you decide your time here has come to an end, when you have felt like you can enjoy this phone no longer, or if you feel you just need an upgrade/better spec'd phone. I believe those are valid reasons, as well as explanations that don't tick off the rest of the community. x) Cheers on your future smartphone endeavors!
ya i was on the same boat when the phone came out but meh there is a lot of things that i love about this brick lol but mind you the galaxy S3 is coming out so i might go out and buy one of those this summer
Just jump already
It all depends on what you want the phone to do for you... and what you are willing to do for the phone!
Sent from my SUPER LG-P999 using XDA
previously owned the sensation and I believe that the g2x is way smoother and feels better in the hands, though the dev community over there is rocking
Really? G2X feels better in the hand? I got to try it out at the store, been looking to get my hands on a sensation off craigslist for a good price, probably trade for my GS2.
I'm sentimental with my devices, also, have lots of back NANDROIDS of the G2X and need to get my data out of them before selling it. Actually thats the only reason I still hang on to my G2X. Too lazy to move my stuff out of it. I can, just don't feel like it.

My solution to low storage (once kernel source is out)!64 gig extra add on!cheap!

I did not realize we need kernel source for this to work!! My apologies. but when kernel SOURCE does drop this will work! So consider this a future plan and if kernel source never drops?! I'll be selling my phone and have a cheap 64 gig usb flash drive for my ps3/comp! loL So I'm good here!
I wasn't happy when reading that the one x has only 16 gb in storage(technically around 11!)I have over gigs backup in titanium alone! so I looked all around and found a solution that is gonna work for me and it will only cost around 40 bucks USD for all parts needed and will give me an extra 64 gigs to have on me all the time!
First your gonna need one of these or something simillar. My plan is too always have this storage either in my truck or pocket ready to go when I need it!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64GB-TOSHIB...53?pt=US_USB_Flash_Drives&hash=item1c2906d66d
There are alot smaller and lighter drives out there but I wanted cheap and packs alot of storage so this was a good fit for me!
Now in order to access this drive on the fly your gonna need something like this as well or they also have just the fitting without the cord you just gotta look around a little. I prefer having a little bit of cord personally but up to you!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221018356464?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
and this will pretty much solve my issue of not having enough storage. Both pieces are small and like I said the cord and drive are so small you can keep it in your pockets and the best part is you won't need pc access nor working wifi to be able to get to your files/unicorn porn!
I hope you guys can make this work for you as I'm quite satisfied with this solution and will work with alot of phones not just the one x its just a matter of if you dont mind carrying 2 things in your pocket/vehicle/desk drawer/ass etc all the time!
Intresting!
I can't see using 16gb of storage on a phone honestly.... it's a phone LOL. It's definitely not a replacement for my tablet.

Like I said especially if you play games? those games sometimes add an extra gig of data after all is said and done.A couple big games and your space is done. I don't personally own a tab just a pc and phone. Don't really see the need for a tab as of right now and can't afford one either!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we still waiting on the kernal source for the AT&T HOX to enable USB OTG? It might be working by now for the international version but all I've read so far is that OTG isn't (yet) enabled for the AT&T HOX.

Well I just briefly checked google and that may indeed be the case. Oh well it should drop soon and when it does this will definetly work but I will change the title to state "once kernel drops solution" for now if this is the case. I'm brand new to the one x so not sure. Thanks for the info guys!
Damn this is awesome! I can't wait for kernel source even more now, the future looks bright. I can have every game I want installed to that, my whole music folder for long car trips and movies for flights! This is working already for the international hox? I don't want to get ahead of myself, I just want to make sure this will become a reality for our phones.

I can't see using 16gb of storage on a phone honestly.... it's a phone LOL. It's definitely not a replacement for my tablet.

Well you don't have 16gb you have 9.9 after partitioning. I don't put any music or movies on my phone,I stream those and I've filled this internal card without blinking. A couple of nandroid backups, a rom zip or two, titanium backup backup and pics and vids from a 8mp camera will fill er up fast. This is the worst fail about this phone. C'mon a 32 should've been no question when you don't have add on capabilities.
when I do need to access my huge music library or my movies, and under certain circumstances, I use my seagate 500 gb wireless drive I got for my iPad. http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/wireless/goflex-satellite/. That's if I don't have 4g or wifi available for streaming from my pc.
The jury is still out. We don't yet know if the usb port provides power. I hope it does.

Would powered USB hubs provide a workaround if it doesn't? I did a quick search on the international HOX dev forums for anything USB OTG-related, and found an experimental kernel that required you to connect a powered USB hub in a particular way such that the hub power brick was plugged in near the end of the process. I have no idea how it relates to the AT&T version, but shouldn't the int'l HOX give us some indication of what we can expect from the USB port?

LOL wow I feel like an absolute [email protected] now! Time to change the title again or maybe just delete this thread entirely Nah it still may be useful I'll leave it for now but if a mod thinks this is premature or a go nowhere situation??? then by all means feel free to delete it!
It's definitely an interesting solution nonetheless.

Only thing I could think of besides cloud solutions but now theres alot of factors such as if that port is even gonna have enough juice to power peripheral devices/flash drives. I would think it would?? but who the hell knows companys are always out to screw the buyer more and more every day! Plus like I also said even if it doesn't end up working?? you definetly can use that flash drive on other devices and for 50 cents a gig you cant beat that!

New AT&T Atrix 2 User.

Hi! I just bought yesterday an Unlocked Atrix 2 from AT&T, it came with Android 2.3.6 (55.13.25.MB865,ATT.en.US) Pure stock, not rooted, brand new.. My question is.. What should i know about this device? Is it Getting an official OTA of ICS soon? I don't want to root it yet, i'd like to receive official ICS Update via OTA, then root and play with it. I'm in argentina, and sometime while surfing the web with 4G i lose network connection and reconnects itself after a few secs, someone has experienced that? The Screen is a little yellowish all over white colours, normal too or what? Thanks A2 Users!

Official ics will be here in a month or so. Hopefully sooner. The yellowish colors for the screen are normal for this phone.

Hi. And, welcome to the community..
It's a good device, but it has a locked bootloader which prevents us from installing truly custom roms or custom kernels. But, as you will notice, the guys around here can do some pretty cool stuff with what limited capabilities we've got. (The unlock you are referring to is the subsidy unlock for different carriers, I assume).
Yes, depending on your definition of soon, the official ICS is coming soon-ish (my guess is august for the at&t us builds). And simply rooting, should have no impact on receiving or installing the official ota update - it's the other stuff you do with root that screws up the install of the ota - but we have ways to fix up your system for the ota..
Never been to Argentina, but I have experienced bad data connections depending where I'm at.
The yellowish color is not normal. At least mine doesn't look yellow. And since yours came stock 2.3.6 (most come 2.3.5 out of the box), and it's sim is unlocked, so it may be refurbished or slightly used.. not sure what causes the yellow.. do you have a screen guard that discolors it?
Hope that helps. Good luck with everything.

I've never noticed a "yellow" tint, but I do have some darkish blotches in the center of where my keyboard would appear that may be from mashing the screen too hard while angry texting crazy girls...

Wow! So many replies in just Minutes.. Thanks a lot, i feel confortable asking here now. First of all its Sim Unlocked, you can use it with any carrier. About "Yellowish" tint all over, is hard to tell when it is noticeable, for example, when you surf in Google Play, while loads the screen of a selected app, you can see the background the yellowish tint is a bit noticeable, also in Wifi settings and others, but colors in photos and everything is perfectly normal.. Probably i'm a bit daltonic or paranoid. I'm happy to know that our phone will have ICS in August, i think the wait will worth, i saw Droid Razr running ICS and, OMG so smooth, so perfect..! The only i complain about is about the stock browser, wich provides a laggy experience -.- but overall performance is good! I like the build quality, its a very good looking phone, looks very professional and feels like a premium phone. Not like the cheap plastics Samsung GS2 i own, it feels like a toy compared to A2! I'm uploading photos of the phone right now.

I agree, it feels like a good quality piece of hardware. Oh, and August was just my guess, the official word from Moto is Quarter 3, which goes until like late September I think.. so who actually knows..
As for browsers, yup, the stock GB browser is horrible in my opinion also.. I'm sticking with Boat Browser - keeps getting updates and getting better. Also, Firefox is available for GB, and for ICS, you can get Chrome (but it's still pretty bare bones - plus the stock ics browser uses chrome parts I believe..). Just try a few out, and you'll find a nice replacement browser...

First off.. WELCOME! The A2 is a great phone and I hope you're happy with it
We have plenty of great devs here that make amazing things happen for this phone.
ALSO if you really don't like the yellowish tint try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netmanslab.sa&hl=en
Just raise the blue values to get rid of the tint

[Q] Nexus 5 Custom ROM

Hello,
I will get a Nexus 5 this month, the 16 GB version and it really pisses me off that the stock android has ~8 GB... that will use half of my phone space....
A friend told me it's worth installing a custom ROM. But, it really is?
I was thinking at Cyanongenmod and Elix-R, but I have no idea how the custom ROM works, never installed one, never had one.
Which one is the best? And how can I see how much space will they occupy?
I will use my phone for applications like Facebook, Kik, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Steam and games.
So, what I need to know:
1. Best custom ROM(s) for what applications I will use (read at top)
2. Please tell me how much space will the occupy. Every of them.

what are you talking about? where do yoy hear these rumors? the 16gb model has about 13gb free for you to use. only the samsung sgs 1, 2, 3, and 4 had 8gb in their 16gb versions, because samsung adds much useless junk to their stock roms. the nexus devices NEVER come with bloatware.
also, there is NO SUCH THING AS A BEST ROM. to every person, they are different. best is only for you, and what fits your needs best. there isnt such a thing as a one size fits all rom. anyways, xda does not let you ask this question, as theres no best roms.
also, cm might be popular, but its far from a good rom.
before you do anything to your phone, learn first. read about modding, about how to fix things, about how to do things properly before you do anything, or youll be starting a thread titled "help, i bricked my dev ice".
OK, maybe I lied... I have a HTC Desire and I installed ~3 custom ROMs on it. I currently use Cyanongenmod V7.
A friend of mine told me that the stock android uses ~8 GB on his Nexus 5 (32 GB version).
I was thinking at installing Elix-R custom ROM.
It seems to be a simple ROM, for what I need... simple things.
What do you guys think?
I found just now the rules about "BEST ROM". I'm sorry ! But now I'm talking about Elix-R ROM Not breaking the rules anymore.

install what you like, as there are many good roms for the n5(almost all of them). it takes minutes to flash, if you dont like a rom, flash another. no one is going to tell you which rom to use.
your friend is a bit off, android doesnt use 8gb, it uses almost 3.
Umm, I will go for the Elix-R one.
The zip file has ~400 mb.
Do you guys know ~ how much space it will occupy after I install it?
more than 400mb. you have 3gb dedicated to system stuff, it doesnt touch your storage, and you cant use the other space left over in the system, its only for system stuff.

After I root my Nexus 5 and install Elix-R... I was thinking at buying a Micro SD adapter.
The product is called "Dash Micro with USB-MicroUSB Adapter & Case, Carbon Black". It costs 12$ and it's from the company named meenova.
I will be able to install apps & games on the SD Card and open & play them ?

Not sure about apps and games, but you'll need Stickmount or an alternative if the ROM doesn't have it implemented.

Google the product name followed by the word review and you'll likely be able to determine if the purchase is one you should make or not. More likely than not, someone with a Nexus 5 has bought that product before and left a review.

Apps as in apk, no but game data (including obb) yes, with root and folder mount.
However a word of warning, the N5 isn't comfortable to play games in landscape mode with a USB device hanging out the port.
Personally I gave up and will get much bigger memory on my next device.

You are one of those persons who talk without knowing anything about what they talk.
A phone company offers a nice deal, you pay ~80 EUR in the first month, and in the next 12 months you pay 25 EUR / month.
+ unlimited mobile data and unlimited international & national minutes for 5 eur / month
And that's the only phone I can afford at that price. Asked them if they got the 32 GB version, no, they dont.
