How to Install TouchDown on Windows 8 and Windows RT
NitroDesk, Inc. is pleased to provide you with an early preview version of TouchDown for Windows 8 and Windows RT. These instructions describe how to download and install TouchDown for Windows 8 and Windows RT devices.
IMPORTANT! This is an early preview; things can break and cause you some distress. Please keep in mind this is only the Beta Version of TouchDown for Windows. However, most things work, and we are starting to dogfood this ourselves. Please email any issues or feedback to us at [email protected].
Limitations in This Preview
IBM Lotus Notes Traveler is not currently supported.
Security policies like Application PIN and encryption are not implemented yet. Please don’t use this application in security sensitive environments unless you are evaluating.
IRM support is currently not implemented fully, but will be shortly.
Tested ONLY against Microsoft Exchange 2010 server at this time, Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 and other servers may or may not work.
Only the following items sync: Email, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes (if you connect to Microsoft Exchange 2010).
Installation
This software is an early preview and is not intended for commercial distribution. If you are going to use this app for any use other than evaluation, please wait for it to appear in the Windows Store or preloaded on the device you are going to purchase.
Login to your Windows RT tablet (or Windows 8 computer).
On the Start screen tap Desktop.
Open Internet Explorer
a. If you have a Windows RT device, navigate to: http://nitrodesk.com/tddownloads/tdwin/beta/install-rt.bat.
b. If you have a Windows 8 computer, navigate to: http://nitrodesk.com/tddownloads/tdwin/beta/install-win8.bat.
Select Run to begin downloading TouchDown.
Provide the appropriate responses for the prompted warnings.
When asked to sign in with an account to acquire a developer license you can,
a. Sign in with your MSN/Live account
b. Create a new account in Live
Once it acquires the license, it will warn you of installing an untrusted certificate to the device. Tap Agree.
The package will install.
Go to the Start screen and swipe to see TouchDown at the very end.
Running TouchDown
Tap on the TouchDown app from the Start screen to launch it.
Type your email address and password on the first screen, press next.
If your user ID is NOT the email address, enter that and the domain name.
Type the server name and press Next.
At this point TouchDown will try to connect to your server. If it connects successfully, it will ask you to choose the items to sync.
If it asks you for permission to run in background, approve it.
Updating TouchDown
Login to your Windows RT tablet (or Windows 8 computer).
On the Start screen tap Desktop.
Open Internet Explorer to download the zip file.

As a previous owner of Touchdown on Android ( in which was excellent app); I downloaded by the instructions and it works great. The only feature I wish it had was having a checklist option to select emails to either move into folders or to delete. Similar to the email app preloaded on RT , it only allows you to delete one message at a time. Other then that small feature request it's like my previous experience with the app, a one stop mail, calendar, tasks, notes, contact app. A definite must have.
Does it only sync with EAS?

Um... you can select multiple messages and delete them all at once in the mail app. With the keyboard/mouse/touchpad with ease, with your finger with some difficulty. Perhaps the multi-select works the same way in TouchDown.

It's really nice. Good size and works well.
Some tweaks required but it is still a beta. I have only managed to work out how to have on account. There's no obvious "add new account" option, even via the charms bar.
Would be lovely if I could import an ical URL and then it could take over completely as my calendar.
You can select multiple with a swipe to the right for select, though sometimes this results in opening the message instead.
I have it working against Gmail EAS right now (which of course means that I have to hit some website to set it up to allow all of my calendars and enable true deletes). So far it works well, though the interface doesn't feel Metro-y. The settings could use some work as when used on a tablet, the on-screen keyboard often overlaps the settings. That makes them hard/impossible to use without a physical keyboard attached.
On the whole, no major problems, but also not enough improvement over the built-in Mail app for me to want to switch. (Hard to believe I just typed that.)
Is this beta different to what is now available in the app store?
Whether anyone could setup gmail? It always says that ActiveSync can't be found (
Isn't it only for Exchange. I want to use it for pop3 and imap since the mail app can't do pop3
It seems useless if i do not use Exchange. I can't neither setup gmail nor my domain mail using pop and smtp (((
Having some trouble... I deleted the tile and now I don't find any way to launch it, as it is not in my Apps either.
I tried installing aging, but when it comes up and says to hit enter to continue the dos window just close.
I would like help with a couple of things,
1. How can I remove all of what is downloaded and installed? I would like to clean this up. It would be nice if there was uninstall/removal instructions-I couldn't find them.
2. I would like to do number 1, because ultimately I would like to re-install this.
Running Windows 8.
Appreciate any help or pint into the right direction...

Hey everyone...
Just wondering if anyone had come up with a Gmail Notifier type program (or an acceptable workaround) for the Today page. Specifically, I am looking for the following features:
1. Checks your Gmail account every X minutes and notifies you on the Today page if you have new unread mail.
2. Does NOT download the headers (see #3).
3. If you check/read your email on your home computer, the next time your WM/PPC device checks for new messages, it will clear the 'unread mail' alert as those messages are no longer unread.
4. Uses data connection, not SMS.
Item #3 is the biggie for me. I use multiple PCs/devices (work desktop, work laptop, home desktop, home laptop, 8525/Hermes) and therefore want to manage all my mail via my browser since it will always be consistent no matter which machine I'm using. I do NOT want to have to clear/delete headers off my mobile device after I have already read the mail using one of my PCs.
I just want a flag to show on the Today page if I have currently unread mail sitting in my Gmail box and to go away when I don't... no matter which machine checks/reads the message(s).
Even better would be if it supported multiple Gmail accounts and Gmail for Domains.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

This would be a great thing if it could be accomplished. I can write something like that in Linux using PHP, and then port it to Windows, but there's no way I could get close to doing something like that for the mobile, you're prolly better off using the GMail client from gmail.com/m and just setting it to download headers only, not the body, since it's just a simplified interface to the website for the phone. I used it on my SE w810i for a while because I was out of the house for over 20 hours one day and wanted to check my mail. (GPRS/EDGE data connection for the win.)
Finally, someone has taken this project on! Egil has developed a gmail notifier for Windows Mobile. I've been using it for about a week now. Works well. It is still a work in progress.
Its nice not to have to delete the headers I was downloading via POP3.

Good news! Gmail is going to support IMAP.
So reading a message on your PocketPC will change the status to read on the server.
It will be interesting to see if using IMAP through Pocket Outlook will work any better/easier.
Just waiting for IMAP to be enabled on my account so I can compare.

I still like SMS for email notification because it does not drain the battery and is true push. The problem: SMS is usually not free. The solution: peekamo, the only SMS service free on both receiving and sending.
On one of my servers, I run a Perl script to check gmail via atom feeds and then send a SMS to my phone via peekamo. Works like a charm, love it.

Installed on WM 6.1 which includes .net CF 2.0. Today plugin seems to only work when run from \program files\ (tried \extendedrom\program files\ to no avail).
Nice little app - worth a look if you aren't totally enamored with pocket outlook...

that site no longer exists, any ideas where to find a good gmail notifier?
I've searched for this particular issue and basically haven't found a solution for the Pocket PC but I know one must be out there. Here's my problem:
I've got two Exchange Server accounts I need to sync on the same device (HTC Fuze, a.k.a. HTC-4600) as well as some POP3 email accounts. However, I specifically do not want to sync the calendar information from either Exchange account. I need a third party program, I'd imagine, to accomplish this.
I've seen where people have said it can't be done but I've been doing this for years on a Treo 650 and Treo 680 using ChatterMail+ application, which does just this. However, that's a Palm OS application and I've moved on to Windows Mobile 6.1. I figure there's got to be something out there similar to ChatterMail (which is only for the Palm OS). With one Exchange Account I've actually got access to the full Outlook integration on the desktop (although I don't want it) and with the other I'm limited to Outlook Web Access anyway.
Does anyone know of any software that can accomplish this on the WM6.1 platform? Any help is appreciated.
By the way, that's two exchange server email accounts (but just the "Inbox" from each - not the calendar, contacts, notes, etc.) on one AT&T Fuze (a.k.a. HTC Raphael 101) while still syncing the calendar, contacts, notes, (Everything but email) with my PC. Anyone got any ideas or am I ignoring some feature of the Fuze?
i believe all you need to do is go into server settings and deselect the calendar sync. also i think from WinMo 5 on we can sync to 2 and up to (i maybe wrong) 4 exchange servers.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not quite what I'm looking for. I didn't explain it very well in the original post but the two exchange servers only allow the OWA interface; they do not have IMAP4 or anything enabled. That program on the PalmOS, Chattermail++ with the Exchange plug-in, allowed those two accounts to sync the email somehow despite the limitations imposed by those exchange servers.
Also, I have to keep calendar checked because I want it to sync with my desktop Outlook calendar (I run my work OS in a virtual machine, so one of my Exchange Server accounts is in Outlook on a VM, that way I keep my personal and work appointments separate). That Chattermail++ did all this, so I'm really looking for a replacement for that program. I've settled on Flexmail4, and the only drawback to that is there's no exchange plug-in to get me into the OWA like on the PalmOS. But, that may have been a one-of-a-kind thing.
ok you can disable calendar in one server and not the other the settings are separate or all servers. but i know nothing about owa settings and syncro. Sorry i cant help ya except maybe you may wish to run a palm emulator so that you can run chattermail? Just a thought, i personally wouldnt want to run that way.Either way please post your findings im interested.
I've been playing around with the two browsers (Opera and IE) included to access OWA. The Opera browser will remember my login credentials for me, which is very handy, but it has a very strange glitch when loading the OWA pages; most of the time it will chop off the top part of the page if you are at all zoomed in (zooming in is mandatory if you want to actually read your email using Opera). The top of the OWA pages, unfortunately, is where "Reply, Reply All, Forward, Delete, etc." commands are located. You're unable to scroll up to them or zoom out to see them, which pretty much makes OWA unusable in Opera. Using IE to access OWA is better since the entire page is accessible. However, the left-hand frame with the "Inbox, Folders, Options, Logoff, etc." menu takes up over half of the screen even on landscape mode. So you've got to click and drag to expand the actual message area. Also, IE does not remember my login settings for OWA which is a pain.
So that's the state of my findings at present. The PPC program "Chronobis" (http://www.chronobis.com/) has got the right idea on the functionality I'm looking for, except it can sync everything but email! That's the kind of functionality (interaction with OWA) that I need for the exchange server email accounts.
My Fuze auto configures for yahoo and goes to a imap.mail.yahoo.com server, it works like an IMAP champ.
I then configure my Outlook for the same settings and I keep getting the UserName/Password entry box. I know I have the settings the same as the phone and the correct username/password.
Any tips? Imap for my Yahoo would be awesome on Outlook.
I am kind of answering my own question here. Looks like Imap Yahoo has a way to verify an id of the device type before it allows connection. So apparently wm6.1 mail app sends what it needs to Yahoo Imap Mobile but Outlook does not.
Damn, I was looking at doing that as well. I hope they open it up!

Thanks for the reply. From what I understand, Yahoo servers require a specific, but non-standard IMAP command to be sent before login is done. The command is: “ID ("GUID" "1")”. Rumor is that its easy to modify the client to send it. Mutt and Mozilla Thunderbird already have a modded version. Furthermore, YPOPSs! and FreePOPs also use this command.
Can anyone provide some insight as to how we would go about modifying the connection string Outlook uses?
I guess this would be similar to configuring your browser to present itself as a different client - something that is very easily done.

Actually Yahoo IMAP does not recognize ur phone/pc..
If u want it to use on pc pl make sure that u selected download only headers option then only it wroks

This is NOT true. I have tried downloading only headers and still the same problem: On the PC Outlook fails to connect correctly to the IMAP server due to the problem described on the page I have linked to above.
With mobile Outlook on the phone downloading headers as well as content via IMAP works perfectly.
I agree with Jean Luc. When using a mobile device to access the Yahoo IMAP server, any and all options work as they should. However, when using Outlook via non-mobile computer, it doesn't work.
Clearly Yahoo has implemented a filter on the connection string Outlook is sending to prevent users from using IMAP. I believe the fix should be relatively easy. Can anyone provide some insight on this?

MS Technical info found...need help applying
Just happened to be searching more generally for this myself today for my desktop Outlook having got used to IMAP on my WM6.5.3 Energy ROM and wanting better that 'leave mail for x days' POP3 options (Specifically I want my desktop sent items to sync up to Yahoo mail like then do when sending from my phone so in and out boxes are all in 1 place)
Found this MS Technical info page that seems to give all the info needed on how to get Outlook to send custom properties, it's just I don't have enough knowledge of RegEditing to get this right ;(

That suggests you can edit your CurrentUser registry values to permanently send pre values as part of each recieve something along:

???
Although I presume that the {000...00046} GUID is Machine or User specific and that's the bit I'm not sure what to set for my install, think I worked out the other bits.
Anyone with better Windows Registry knowledge able to help out?
Found working Yahoo IMAP 'incoming' proxy
In my continued searches I came across the following IMAP proxy which acts between Outlook and Yahoo to insert the necessary GUID 1 string as part of it's call to Yahoo's server, and would do that same for any other IMAP capable client at http://www.ameir.net/blog/archives/43-Yahoo!-Mail-IMAP-Proxy.html
Using the Windows download of this tool on Windows 7 with Outlook 2003 (Odd combination I know!) I was able to get Yahoo IMAP email and all folders to appear within Outlook where I thought I was onto a real winner!
Unfortunately it looks like either the proxy or my setup didn't fully support 2 way IMAP as I wasn't able to drag any local email up into the IMAP account as I should have been able to do.
It did however allow me to pull down server copies of Sent items from both Yahoo Webmail 'Sent' and WM Device 'Sent Items' folders and just drag and drop them into my normal Outlook default Sent Items so those were all together again.
Setup was pretty simple for what I got working:
1) Download and unzip the file in the Windows archive from that page above
2) Run the .exe included with those extracted files to open a DOS window running the proxy
3) In Outlook configure a new IMAP email account but set incoming IMAP to 'localhost' then in advanced settings make sure incoming port is 3490. Setup all other fields as you'd normally expect and with Yahoo normal SMTP server address.
4) Outlook will add a new tree for that account in left hand 'Mail Folders' view, just click around and explore. If no sub folders appear right click on root and choose 'Update Folders'
Hope that helps someone, and as code for this proxy is open source maybe someone could work out how to embed this customisation direct within Outlook so IMAP should then work fully 2 way?
Will keep my fingers crossed someone with suitable skills sees this thread as would really like to move into an IMAP world now I know how much better than POP3 it is!!!

running Win XP?, if yes how? Wm phones can do it seamlessly using
MSActivesync.
2. is it possible to use the desktop's internet connection and browse
the web from the android? (just like WM-phones do with MS Activesync)
3. Is there a way to import all the Windows mobile contacts onto the
Android phone? NOT from google mail-account because I have different
contacts in my phone and gmail. And I would like to import my Phone
contacts onto Android.

1. Hopefully google would release a cloud based or an application that allows this, as it would make some lives a little easier.
2. I do not believe there is an app capable of this but it may be possible via bluetooth or use the desktop as an AP. Either way, i don't think you will get any better than you would off of wifi.
3. I found this off a quick search http://www.myhtcphone.com/import-contacts. Dont know if it works or not, but it seems to be like what you want.

2. use adb port forwarding with proxy or vpn.
3. export your outlook contacts as csv and import them in gmail.

Google calender sync is at it says "for your calender only". No contacts. No idea why they can't just add it. Our lives would be so much easier.
I've had a friend report to me that Google has licensed the ActiveSync technology, so it may be added in a future build of the Android OS.
I believe that the "Hero" version that Haykuro is toying with currently also showed ActiveSync in one of the menus, but I can't vouch for that at the moment.
Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

It's not ActiveSync, that's Microsoft's product. The new Hero build (as well as the stock Magic ROM) have a program called HTC Sync. I don't believe anyone has obtained a copy of the desktop software for that though.
it's two separate things.
google licensed activesync to allow ms exchange clients to sync with google calendar and gmail contacts (see http://www.google.com/mobile/winmo/sync.html). you already have this on android.
the ms exchange option appeared in the mail app can only connect to ms exchange servers (not your desktop activesync clients) and can do email only.
htc sync is the only possiblility. (m$ won't be stupid enough to allow you to use activesync on any other platform.)
Your ideas of sync are outdated on Android.
My phone address book syncs to my gmail account, and my email clients address book syncs to gmail. My phone calander syncs to Google Cal, and I find the web based interface to work just fine. But I am sure you can find something to sync whatever your cal program is to google.
All this syncing happens when the phone is in my pocket and is always up to date.
As for browsing the web from the phone, over the usb connector, why? The phone has 3G and wifi.
You can import your contacts as a group into gmail, then set the phone to only display contacts from that group.

as everyone else is surely noticing .. google syncs better than the mickeysoft mousesync stuff other people use .. you are automatically synced to the google server and from there you can do anything .. i pull my calendar into outlook or anything else i want .. so .. what was the question again?!?
If you have no 'net connex, 'the cloud' does 2 things: jack & shizzle.
I do, however, wish I could keep my contacts synced with GMail (after my initial .cvs port-over). GCalSync works very well, though!

That's great, but I don't want to be beholden to a corporation, especially not to a single corp using closed protocols. If kinda defeats the purpose of having an open source phone for some of us. A mechanism to sync to my home server (not desktop), would certainly be welcomed.

Ever heard of wireline? I guess you can't conceive of being in an environment without wifi or 3G, they do exist you know? Not to mention that it would be nice to not always have to broadcast everything you do into the ether.

My phone address book syncs to my gmail account, and my email clients address book syncs to gmail. My phone calander syncs to Google Cal, and I find the web based interface to work just fine. But I am sure you can find something to sync whatever your cal program is to google.
All this syncing happens when the phone is in my pocket and is always up to date.
As for browsing the web from the phone, over the usb connector, why? The phone has 3G and wifi.
You can import your contacts as a group into gmail, then set the phone to only display contacts from that group.

Yes, many of the suggestions sounds good for me. I am guessing many of you r not on Windows anymore. My problem is there, I am still on Windows just becoz I play lot of games, install a lots of programs which are only possible on win-ground. I do streaming - didnt find lot of freedom in this area on other OSs.
btw, I will apply your ideas considering them expert opinions becoz OI am just a noob in such things.

that didn't make much sense .. "not on Windows" anymore .. my primary OS is Microsoft for the same reason that there is a lot more freedom

Oh, you're not tied to Google. Android is made so that each of its apps can be replaced by a user-made app (of course, as with the lock screen, that's still in the process of being completed). There's a few calendar applications in the market that can do the same thing that the Google Calendar can. Or you could code your own/hire someone to do so.
I don't get G3. And Wifi is only at home. I am in Edge or GPRS most of the time. I was in GPRS when I typed that message. Syncing works just fine.
I can understand not wanting to trust your data to Google. Apps can read and write to the address book and cal. All somebody needs to do is make an on-line sync app.
After years of living with having to sync my palm, the "cloud" syncing Google provides is the next slice bread. But I do backup my phone, just in case.
I still don't see why you want to browse the web on your phone, wired to your laptop. Just use the laptop then. Or create an ad-hoc connection with ICS and do that over wireless.(Not tried it, but I assume it will work.)

When it starts working for the Android, you could use Funambol (http://www.funambol.com/) on your PC and get both a cloud sync (if you so choose) and a desktop sync. I used to use it to sync my SE P990.
The last time I checked, it wasn't working, but maybe it's fixed now.

I can't speak for the original poster, but I often want to download stuff to my phone, apps, data, ... This is not surfing so to speak, but it still requires a connection. Sometimes wireless is not available for this.

Yes, thanks, I am familiar with that project. Unfortunately I refuse to run a 500MB RAM gorilla (I tried it, it really does use 500MB) on my home server (I run at least 10 virtual servers on my one PC) just to provide a sync framework for one phone. I will not sacrifice that much from the other real server applications that I use. Funambol is really not a good (sane) solution for individuals. I will be investigating the syncevolution framework soon.

My company uses hosted Exchange Server for about 200 users, we have been using BB for many years, now we are free to go anyway we want.
Questions: When viewing e-mails from exchange account, can we move them to folders and when moving folders, can we type the name of the folder or do we have to scroll to find the one and then tap to move it? Or is there any app/add-on or customization we can get to allow this?
Also, do all folders get automatically synched to phone, or do we have to select which ones? I hope it syncs them all with no questions, especially when a new one is created on outlook.
Last question, is there a unified inbox for all folders, so e-mails in all folders (not just all accounts) displayed in one screen with icons next to them indicating they are in a folder? If not, that's cool.
I am just trying to move from BB to Windows Phone, and trying to figure out if it has the features I use most frequently.
Answers would really be appreciated.
You can move emails to folders. You must select the folder from a list. There are no apps or customizations AFAIK to change that.
All folders don't automatically get synced, but when you select a folder for the first time you get the option of turning on sync for that folder. Actually to be honest I am not sure if it syncs the folder just that once or if it will continue to sync that folder automatically.
There is no unified-folder view.

Is this possible? i don't own a WP7 device, so I can't try, can you check this please? Is this only for unified messaging from multiple accounts?
Regarding folder sync, the reason I asked is because if it automatically syncs all from exchange server, when you create a new folder on Outlook, you would not have to go back to you WP and select it. Is that the case?
Sync folders are not added automatically, you need to do so manually. The only folders synced by default are Inbox and Sent. Drafts can not be synced. All others can be but you have to set it up manually.
The assumed use case is that a user will only have a few folders inportant enough that they want to use the data and storage to sync them on the phone. Out of some 20-ish folders, I only sync 3 on my phone; the rest aren't time-critical. Exchange rules do a pretty good job of filtering the important from the unimportant for me. This way I can turn on the notification for new mail and have it mean something, rather than just have the phone buzzing all day (I get 300+ emails every day at work).
Just to add to this. They are not synced automatically but are listed automatically. You choose the folder then tell it to sync. after that it will follow the default settings for your exchange account and receive emails pushed.
Also you can pin any of those folders to your start screen. I have one for the directors, one for the CEO and one for staff that is always on my start screen.
We are using exchange 2010 at our office and it pretty much rocks. Also IE9 on Windows phone mango fully supports all outlook web mail options. Works great to access the extra calendars like rooms and such.
In your contacts also you can search the exchange server for an address. Exchange support rocks in windows phone.
Also download the emulator, setup an account and try it out. I think that's possible at least as you can test apps on the emulator.
lastly it also follows exchange rules. You can wipe the phone from (even the user can wipe there own) right through OWA on exchange 2010. Also you can set rules to force pin locks and i think although i haven't tried it, limit what the user can do.
Oh and one more thing... it has sharepoint built in. I haven't tried it yet as i just set up a sharepoint foundation server to pitch to the admins once i've worked more on it. That and onenote
