[Q] Possible to root 4.1.1? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My main question is are there currently any working methods to root my phone from 4.1.1
BackStory:
I rooted my phone about 4 months ago successfully. about a month ago i started getting update notifications from VZW to update to 4.1.1 Which would have been great since i was looking forward to jellybean.
Unfortunately their update kept failing. so i decided this morning to use Synergy and just run a custom rom. Followed all the instructions and everything went very smoothly while playing around with my new rom i decided to reboot to test the speed of the boot time. upon reboot im greeted by the VZW soft brick screen.
So i then followed the instructions listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030
To restore my phone to factory default. which was fine i don't really mind losing my data nothing that isn't backed up on Google.
I decided to fully update the phone and then try to re-install the synergy rom but i cant seem to find any detailed threads on the subject.. Help?

I think i actually locked it after i finished the install. And then restarted, do softbricks occur when you re-lock your bootloader?
Also another question..is there any way to check the /system /data partitions from inside the phone (terminal app maybe?) are correctly set to r/w over r/o (i don't like unplanned installs )

Soft bricks always occur on a locked bootloader. There are file managers that can do that like solid explorer.

[Q] Jelly Bean Flash gone wrong

My phone got stuck in what appeared to be recovery mode while trying to flash Jelly Bean using this guide:
http://www.android.gs/update-verizon-galaxy-s3-to-vralg7-ics-update-rooted-and-deodexed-firmware/
The phone seemed to flash took about 8 minutes then just went blank. Nothing. After about 10 minutes of waiting still nothing. I finally tried to get it to respond by hitting up/down/power and home buttons and still nothing. I then pulled the battery figuring I had bricked it anyway. After pulling the battery I restarted the phone and it came on but in a stock configeration. Not bricked but lost my root and cannot seem to get the phone to restore from Titanium Pro back up (not rooted any more). Any help getting things back the way they were would be appreciated.

Section 5 of my guide...use the prerooted jellybean version. This will wipe your internal so back up what you dont want to lose.
By the way what you linked is for an ICS update not the jb leaks. Listen to droid style. I woke audio recommend getting your files, etc from here in XDA or rootz wiki. I see a lot of problems of people following these random guides online.

I've noticed this as well. It seems every week or two someone is having major issues and they stem from using these rooting guides from sites I've never heard of.

After this happened I read more, a lot more about rooting and decided I wasn't rooted now.
Trying to root again produces an (amb?) error which I can't get past.

Do you have a super su app n the phone because what you linked is supposed to be pre rooted

No Super SU, though I had it previously. I've checked in my applications list and it's not there.

[Guide] How to fix roaming/wont activate problem after flashing 4.2.1 rom

***ONLY VERIZON GS3***
A lot of people have been having problems with flashing CM10.1 and the SlimBean 4.2.1 beta. This guide will tell you how to fix the data. At first it looks like you lost your IMEI, but you probably didn't. It is a simple fix.
What you will need:
Odin: http://samsung-updates.com/Odin307.zip
Stock Rom: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wjaifmod7d78lt0/stock.vzw_root66.tar
Instructions:
1. Go into Odin put the stock rom into the PDA part and make sure the check mark next to it is checked.
2. Boot into Download mode by hitting Volume Down + Power + Home
2. Make sure only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are checked under options (if not you can seriously mess up your phone).
3. Flash the stock rom using Odin.
4. Once it says pass in Odin take your phones battery out and boot into recovery by hitting Volume Up + Power + Home.
5. Hit wipe data/factory reset (your phone should restart)
6. Hit the bottom left then right then left then right then volume up to pass activation.
7 Then type *2767*3855# into the phone once you set it up (you shouldn't have to press call).
Now you phone should be fixed, and you should be able to root, unlock your boot loader and try again.
Tip:
When flashing SlimBean 4.2.1 beta 1 and CM10.1 use a dirty flash over a 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 rom.
- Dirty flash is when you don't clear your data before you flash.
thanks
Trying this now, I have been working all day to fix this.
I first ran into problems yesterday, cm10 ran out of room, removed a bunch of stuff( my back ups). Did some flashing and reverting and such. Now i seem to be stuck in roam mode.
Questions: What is the point of step 5?
It just says to load into recovery then next step is once the phone is loaded.
There is no step 6.

Sorry I'll fix that I was in a rush to get this finished before work.
This works!
But if you are still interested in CM10.1 you can still flash it with data working!
I decided to go out on a limb and tried going from ICS (VRALG1_odex) rooted/unlocked (after using provision code and getting data back) to CM10.1. To my surprise I found I flashed fine and had data!
I highly suggest using this ROM (http://www.sundergaming.com/downloads/sch-i535/tw/VRALG1_Odex.zip) as it uses its own UI when flashing it from recovery and will keep both ROOT and UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER when installing.
My guess is the problem seems to lie somewhere between a tw rom 4.1.1 JB and cm10.1
Luckly I don't have to deal with this and everything rolled over perfectly for cm10.1
Wow, I wished you had posted this before I returned my phone to the store for a warranty replacement!
Would have saved me a few days of agony, flashing and re-flashing that's for sure. Thanks for sharing though! It's good to know there is a fix for this.
You don't have to do this. This happened to me. Flash cm10.1 without any g apps. This will take u past the activation screen. Go into settings and change mobile network settings to SIM and automatic. Reboot phone. Make sure you have data, phone, and sms. Boot into recovery and flash away. U should have everything back on whatever Rom u choose.

Sorry I posted this in general and android development because I wasn't sure witch one it was, and when I fixed that I forgot to fix it here but I did now.
I can confirm this worked for me!
But, I couldn't get passed the activation screen in order for me to dial the code to reset phone so what I had to do was tap on the bottom of the screen as follows= Tap Left -Tap Right- Tap Left- Tap Right- then Volume up to get out of activation screen then was I able to dial the code to reset my phone. Thank you for this guide op!!!!
i wish i would have seen this yesterday. after trying to flash CM10.1 and getting stuck in roaming for a day in a half, i had to return mine to Costco and get a new one.

so just to make sure if im on CM 10.0 stable, if i flash the CM 10.1 without wiping or doing a factory reset, i wont go into roaming mode again? I apologize for possibly repeating you but ive had alot of trouble with this.

not necessarily. I did this and I was stuck in roaming but all I had to do was go into wireless settings/mobile network settings and make sure my preferred network was set to LTE/CDMA
you can do all this while your phone is trying to activate.
Anyone have an idea for a better file hosting site?
Will this work on a US Cellular phone?
This site has no section for US Cellular.

No you have to get a file for your phone or else you could hard brick it.

Im not sure if the number will work either, it may just be a Verizon thing.
I tried flashing 4.2.1 ROM just to check it out before putting my phone back to stock for a replacement and it borked my network. I tried the method mentioned in the OP and it works great, thanks.
Thank you so much.....you saved my butt and now my phone is working again. Guess I should stop flashing a new rom every couple weeks.

[HELP?] Soft-Brick?

So i decied to go to carbon rom because my phone has been acting strange, YouTube would keep resigning in everything i would launch it, Random crashed and freezes and has just been acting up for no good reason. I was running CM 10.1 nightly and dont apply ant mods to it or anything like that becuase i like it simple.
When i flashed the rom i did it with gapps but they were not intalled when i boot, all i got was my SIM pin popup like i usualy get. So i re-flashed gapps and still no luck. So i said f*** it and found another build of it and copyed it to my SD Card and was going to flash it. Like i allways do i went to factory reset and all i got was a long log of cant remove lost+found and same happed when i tryed to wipe the system. and that didnt look good so i pulled the battery and booted recovery with the key press and it would get to teamwin screen but would reboot. Opened oden on my desktop, reflashed teamwin tar and that didnt help it. So i was lucky that i loaded the rom and i rebooted to recovery and am copying all my /data/media to a sdcard that i have
So can anyone give me some links to the 16GB PIT and all that jazz so i can get thing back up and running
And no i am not a n00b becasue i have been working with android and other phones long enough to know what i am doing

[Q] Random reboots

Hi folks, this is my first thread in this section of the forum, because i was using my old device LG p500 and now i moved to this wonderful smartphone. So, i'd like to solve this problem which is happening now. Basically, the phone unexpectedly stops, and reboot. It happens a couple of times, i guess 3 times in a week. It wasn't happening in ICS, just now that i upload from OTA to Jelly Bean. Note that this was happened while my phone was Unrooted and with Locked Bootloader, the same occured with root and unlocked bootloader. So, any clue? Maybe i should just change the rom, or clean everything as fast as i can.
Thank you.

If you took the OTA then you are sol and will not be able to unlock your bootloader to flash a custom recovery or a rom the traditional way. There is safestrap but thats less than optimal for flashing. As far as the reboots go, it is probably an app that is causing the issues. I would do a factory reset and be selective about the apps I re-installed.

Sorry I must have glazed over the part about you having your bootloader unlocked.
Hi, i changed to the SlimRom since then and the reboots still happen, i'm very frustrated. It freezes, then reboot into the bootloader screen and stays there for ever until i press the power button for a while and the phone vibrate 3 times and after that it boot normally.

Just had this happen to me to lol, spent the last three hours fixing everything and lost all my music because I didnt have a nandroid backup . Anyways just use this guide and revert back to stock rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476. You'll lose root and I think I've also lost recovery but its better than just have a $600 brick.
