Unfortunately a different radio is probably your best bet... but I wouldn't hesitate to try a new SIM card if yours is more than a year old...

does installing new firmware not install a new radio though?

Ah, yeah, you're right, they do... I didn't think of that. I would try updating to the latest FW (3.33 - as you proposed). That'll update your radio which could effect your call quality/signal strength. There are also several build.prop edits you can try as well. I followed this thread a while back and had good results. Of course, if you're just in an area with awful cell coverage there's not too much you can do about it.... that said, if it were me, I'd update the radio and go from there...

Ok its been few months, I have been on skyics 2.3.5 for a while, can't use ICS yet.
I started getting sim has been removed, I reboot and its fine, not sure why this is happening, I had it unlocked about a month a go and use in europe with out issue with ekit SIM. Came back and for a week it was fine, now this started and its very annoying any one seen this?
Last time I had an issue it was hardware and had to replace phone. Now I don't want to replace phone and advice? Before I start changing the ROM etc?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
what was the hardware problem before ?
Had to replace phone. Not 100% sure what was wrong exactly but ATT replaced phone.
Can this be traced back to ROM or radio some how? Or maybe my SIM?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
1st troubleshooting step ----------> replace SIM and see if it would fix the issue ..
Thanks for the reply, any other suggestions?

You can cross-check your SIM's function in another similar/unlocked phone. Also maybe try flashing a different modem.

Well that's the thing, the sim works here afyer reboot. Good call on radio flashing diffrent one now.
Im starting to think that changing SIMs might work as thia usually happenes when the phone is in my pocket. Lets see how flashing radio goes. Maybe I need to move to a new ROM, when is official ICS out?

Ok after reflashing radio and clearing cache etc.. it did it again.
Just walked out of ATT store with new SIM lets see how it is.

At this point, I'm guessing SIM will clear it?... Android 4.0.x fourth leak just dropped from Samsung. Official ICS for SR is (unofficially) overdue.
So I've gotten jelly bean installed on my Nexus S, granted I do have the Sprint i9020a CDMA version, I realize no radio was included, however, I flashed the latest radio that I had and JB doesn't see it, I used the i9020a version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784497
Is it just that there is a GSM version of the i9020a(didn't think there was) or is there something i'm missing, never had this problem before when flashing roms. Right now it says baseband "unknown". Which is telling me the ROM is only looking for a GSM radio I take it.

i9020A is gsm (the only diff with i9020T is the 850MHz for 3g). there was never an i9020a cdma version. maybe you;re confusing it with nexus S 4G (D720)?

Oh I see, well no I had read that 19020a was Sprint only, didn't know there was a GSM variant :/
So if I flash an AOSP version over this will it be ok? or should I just wipe and start fresh to be safe?
isn't the i9020a an att gsm phone? OP, remove your battery and tell us what it says on the phone itself. I'm thinking, along with others here, that you have the ns4g (d720).

Well, I did that and everything is good, however for some reason Google Play Music, refuses to see my music, and Settings refuses to see my ringtones, etc from the sdcard partition
edit:yes i did a full factory wipe when I installed as well.
I would start by looking through the thread of the rom you flashed. Sounds like you may just need to fix permissions or possibly wipe & reflash

Well this is ROM i'm using, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763781 and so far I'm not seeing any issue with that. I've done a fix permissions thing, I'll try a reflash and see if that does the trick, not gonna get my hopes up tho...
Edit: Well I've went back to my 4.0.4 version until things get straightened out...to many bugs to work with in these JB ROMS.....
I haven't found any answers on this, but once or twice per day my phone will be stuck on Searching for Service even though in the status bar, it shows like 3 bars of 3G or 4G. Data still seems to work, but this seriously drains the battery. I'm on stock unrooted HD. Any advice is appreciated. I already tried a new SIM. I bought this phone here on xda, no box, so I doubt Verizon would let me exchange it.
I know this is a silly question but what radio is installed?

VRLG7 is a downgrade in release but does not hurt to reflash any of the modems to see if it fixes problem and which works better for your area. Affects 3G more than it does 4G..

Maybe root it and try a custom kernel, though I'm not positive that will help. Possibly a total wipe and reinstall of a stock system? If you bought it from someone here on xda, chances are it has seen some mods. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in for ya. I just hope you didnt buy someone else's problem... :-\

I got it and it had never been rooted before. I rooted it, used custom ROMs, they all weren't my cup of tea, so I unrooted and flashed the stock HD images via ODIN yesterday. I just flashed the HE radio, and it seems to at least be a bit better. I'll keep experimenting.
It's still dropping signal. Sounds like I'll be calling up Verizon tonight.

Uhh.. yeah don't dial *228 on a 4g phone. It could fry your SIM.
Well I did it and a samsung dialog box popped up and said, "HELLL NOOO. A SIM card does all dis crap."
So, right now I'm on unrooted stock HE, and while the problem seems to be less of an issue, it's still there. Any other suggestions?
I recently purchased a Nexus S (M200) and I am experiencing very low Wifi and GSM signals. In fact, it's so low that I can't even make calls from GSM when indoors and need to get outdoor to get fair signals. Similar issue is with Wifi and I have to be within 10 meters to get a stable Wifi connection.
I have tried various roms and kernels but the problem remains. Even went back to stock gingerbread rom and the same problem. Any suggestion to get this fixed? Seems like a hardware issue and my phone is not under warranty!
Help appreciated.
I experienced the same thing on Cyanogen 10.1 nightly but when I was on stock 4.1 it was ok.
Maybe it's your provider which don't have a good network where you are.
I am sorry for my english I hope you will undrstand me.

You should get the most recent baseband (radio) firmware update for your model of Nexus S. If you search the forums, you should be able to find a thread all the basebands linked. Be sure to only install the one for the model you have, because the wrong one will not work.

Hi, kamran666,
If you purchased it used I would check if WiFi and GSM antennas are there and properly connected.
Take a look on this video from 2:33.
Hope in might help.
Recommend add-ons by Beanstown106
I535VRBMB1 Modem can be found HERE!
I535VRBMB1 RPM can be found HERE!
^^^ What are these? They're the "recommended add-ons" by JellyBeans at the bottom of the CleanROM post. Anyone know what these are. Is this a radio and something else?
Just curious, if I should flash these or not.
newest modem & radio/
flash them in ^this order////
The VRBMB1 modem and rpm were included Verizon's OTA update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2. From what I've read, most people have experienced better data reception after flashing these, but some think it made things worse. I've flashed them and don't notice any difference in data, but possibly better GPS reception.

You should. If you go into Settings / About Phone, and the Baseband version (I think that's the modem) should say I535VRBMB1.

Where can you get the newest radio then? I've flashed the newest modem from goo.im or some website like it, I forgot. But I never saw anything about getting the radio.... Was it kinda a package deal?

Is there anything I can do to fix the brightness toggle on the quick settings panel? For some reason it will only cycle between auto and full brightness and nothing in between...no matter which setting I put it on. Anyone know if there is an additional download for this?

When I first got my S3 for Christmas, I immediately upgraded it to 4.1.2 and then rooted about a week later and installed CleanROM a day or two later! As of right now I'm running JellyBeans 13, but when I check the baseband version it says VRBLK3....should I update the modem and radio to the newest one? I'm always the first one to say if it ain't broke then don't fix it....are there any real benefits? Everything works great for me....Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, etc...
