I know this question might have been asked in different forms, but I still want to double check and be at peace.
I have purchased a Verizon Razr Maxx HD - seller claims it to be brand new, clean ESN and International ready. I am importing this to India where the Frequency Band of my service provider Vodafone is GSM - 900/1800 MHZ, HSPA - 2100 MHZ, 4G LTE - 2300 MHZ
Since Verizon uses CDMA technology in the US, I was initially not very sure if this will work in India. But I researched quite a bit and found that as per the phone Specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_droid_razr_maxx_hd-4972.php, I should be able connect to GSM and 3G (4G is still a dream here in India)
I then confirmed from Verizon and XDA threads that the phone is indeed International ready i.e. in US it is locked for Verizon, but it will work with most networks GSM/HSPA/4G abroad so it doesn't require any separate unlocking for International Use. Is this correct? If the seller says that the phone has a clean ESN, then do I need to unlock the phone separately?
Once my friend in US receives the phone tomorrow, I plan to check the ESN here: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/estore/certifieddevice/cd and also with Verizon Customer Care. Some other XDA members in India and abroad are facing difficulty in connecting to 2G/3G ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100093) so I am worried, if my money will go to waste, although on paper all seems fine. Certain seller on ebay India is saying that it will only work on CDMA networks. So there is a lot of confusion creeping in.
If there is anything other precautionary measures that I should take, before my friend ships the phone to India? Any help is deeply appreciated.
PS: Motorola has discontinued there India business (yes no local support or warranty!) , but I really adore the Razr line of phones so much (for there build quality, great battery life and vanilla UI) that I am treading this path. Only (huge) concern is if the phone will connect to the network

Thanks! The phone was finally delivered yesterday. So I noted the IMEI number and called up Verizon. They said that it has a clean ESN but it is still activated with Verizon. But I am sure what does that really mean.. Will it work properly on any other SIM? I could imagine two scenarios:
As I understand, as soon as the original owner of the phone (eBay seller) stops the monthly bill payment, the connection will get cancelled first and then Verizon will try to claim the phone back. As the seller doesn't have this phone anymore, it is at this time that the phone will start giving SIM card errors to me as the ESN will become bad. Is that correct?
The seller claims, that she got this phone as a contract upgrade but did not use it all. So she must have activated this SIM on some other phone or her older phone. Wouldn't verizon come to know of this and deactivate this SIM card or blacklist list this user and report the phone IMEI. I am clueless on this one.
Overall, I feel that this is a deal breaker for me. And I am planning to return the phone. Any suggestions?
PS: Anyone wondering why I am going through so much trouble? I am in love with this phone (sturdy build quality and best battery!) And it is not available in India for retail.
You shouldn't have any issues unless you plan to use it on a CDMA network owned by Verizon.
Just pull the Verizon SIM out of the phone and pop in your favorite Indian SIM. Be sure to switch the phone to the Global network mode (or GSM/UMTS) and you'll be good to go. Doesn't matter what happens to the seller's account in the US, the phone will still work -- although perhaps not on VZW in the US, in case you travel here. For that matter, the phone won't work in the US at all, as the radio firmware specifically blocks ATT/TMobile.
They'll be an annoying "This SIM is from an unknown source" message every time you start the phone, but that is easily bypassed by pressing OK. I read on here somewhere that the unknown message is actually generated by a VZW *.apk that is installed on the phone. So theoretically one could root the phone and remove the annoying apk/message.
Also, you won't be able to do tethering using the stock utilities -- they try to phone home to Verizon and don't work when on a foreign network (I tried while I was in Australia last week on Optus, it failed miserably.)

For that matter, there is a recently discovered working unlock for that too, and it doesn't even require root

And again there is a fix if you root the phone, it involves editing a sqlite db and setting a value to zero (again search... Don't have the link handy, sorry...).

I see you've tried rooting the phone in the states, so the phone will just show a message that can be removed after rooting the phone and the phone will work on 3G/HSDPA in the states even without using a verizon account?
i have seen a number of people reporting the phone not to be working in India .
I have Razr HD in India & It doesnt work for any GSM

I wonder what happened to the OP.
I have seen some ads. for used Razr HD's recently.
I am confused if those will work in India or not, but the phones are indeed very well built.
I thought you just had to change the mobile networks under settings and it would work.

So is your Droid Razr Maxx Hd working fine with the Indian GSM carrier? Me too looking for a Droid razr maxx hd from US (Verizon Locked with clean ESN). Need a confrimation as this is highly priced & i don't wanna waste my hard earned money. Your reply is appreciated. Thanks
I've been using it since a couple of months now on the Vodafone network and works fine. Gives a HDSP+ network for 3G connections. Rest your doubts the phone works fine in India.

Well I bought my droid razr maxx brand new from eBay and since I knew it's global "ready" I directly brought it to Iran. I've tried a couple of non-Verizon SIMs but non of them worked. when I turn on the phone it simply doesn't recognize the SIM and doesn't let me get past the "Insert SIM" screen. So I thought there should be a problem with the phone as a result I sent it back to US and Motorola for repair and they sent it back saying no functional faults were found. yesterday I chatted with a Motorola agent and she told me "you should have had an international plan with Verizon" before taking it to countries other than US" here's the link which confirms this statement:

When it says global ready it means that it has GSM capabilities rather than only CDMA capability and better say it's NOT GLOBALLY UNLOCKED.

Something is breaking the GSM Radio in US CDMA TP2's from being used with US GSM operators. Trying both a ATT and TMo SIM in a Sprint TP2 fails - network search shows no networks available.
Closer inspection shows that while the devices are SIM unlocked, they Ignore/Reject any networks with US MCC's.
Attempting to show networks with MCC 310 and 311 failed, while 334 and 666 showed up just fine.
Running the fieldTest utility (not to be confused with fieldTrial) shows the GSM radio a-flutter with activity, finding and listing UMTS and GSM networks stateside.
I've poured over the registry and nothing sticks out as the culprit for this behavior; I fear that certain MCC's are locked out of the baseband - but I'm not sure how one would go about examining such configurations and removing such limitations.
Thoughts?
Forgive my naivety, but will this benefit people like me who are VZW subscribers? Is there GSM speeds that CDMA can't reach in certain areas, which unlocking the other radios would allow us to automatically latch onto?
I'm just wondering if this discussion is geared more towards those trying to unlock to move to ATT, or if it can benefit us all equally.

I have accounts with Sprint, Verizon, and ATT. If I can pop in my ATT SIM in my Sprint TP2, and switch service at will (depending on coverage or preference), it would be most excellent.
Maybe I don't get it, but isn't this known? I thought the GSM radios were locked out in the U.S.? It has something to do with FCC compliance?
I believe US GSM frequencies are locked out via software and hardware, either by request of the CDMA carriers and/or the FCC's requirements.

It's an FCC thing, they have not authorized the GSM radio in it for use in the United States, even though it can do 850/1900 GSM. I'm afraid the GSM in these things is strictly for traveling outside the USA. It will show the GSM networks here, as you have found out, but the networks here will not allow it to use them, so no amount of hacks will make it work.

Are you sure about it being an "FCC thing"?
There have been a few reports of people getting an unlock code, and getting their hybrid TP2 to work domestically...sans 3G connectivity, apparently.

The cheapest I've found for an unlock code for the TP2 is $20 from here:

but I don't know what their success rate is like; some companies charge as much as $35 for one.
That's a Canadian version though, I'm sure the models sold there are not subject to US FCC Laws.

Hmm... SIM lock and firmware lock--both "modifiable". I have hope.
I give it a month max till there is a workaround.

The Verizon version if you get the unlock code, it will work in the US GSM.

Hi does anyone know if there is a work around for this it sounds like a firmware thing and not a hardware limitation also I have installed 6.5 on my GSM TP2 is there an SPL for the cdma version yet sorry to post here on this however im trying to get to the bottom of this

I got my Verizon TP2 unlocked (just emailed support and they mailed back the unlock code). Popped in my Orange (UK) SIM, told the phone to use GSM only and was able to TXT/call from it and receive calls/TXT just fine via my UK number. (I'm physically in the US).
So it's not a lock so much on registering with US networks... but it may be a lock on US GSM SIM cards so you can't go toss in your TMobile (US) SIM and dump VZ service.

This is great news! I like to unlock any GSM enabled phone I get for Verizon, just in case I ever decide to leave - so I can take my phone with me
I'll be unlocking mine tomorrow when I get it, if they'll allow it. I've been a customer for over a year, and they allowed it on the Storm and Tour, so this shouldn't be a problem.
I've been with them for several years and as far as I know as long as you're current on your bill they'll give you the unlock code. I had mine for 2 whole days and they gave it to me.

Well thats good news I will see if Sprint allows me to do the same as I have accounts with AT&T and TMO also I would really like to use this on my ATT plan but it appears from reading the previous posts that perhaps US based sims are locked out I will attempt to unlock it tommorow nonetheless and see what happens on the other hand my VZW Storm worked like a charm after getting it unlocked ........... for some reason this seems different though if the FCC notice is read at face value Anyone having any experience with this giving feedback would be much appreciated

I have had my phone two days on VZW. The CSR first said I have to wait 60 days, then checked with T2 and came back and said it is not available. I am sure he doesn't know what I was talking about. I will call again and then a third and if that doesn't work I will just email support as mentioned above. I need an unlock code before November as I will be on the road again overseas and I don't want to pay crazy International VZW rates!

Hmmm VZW Global support was not given the instructions to SIM unlock this TP2 from HTC. Sounds strange to me, has anyone had any luck getting it unlocked in order to use and overseas SIM while overseas instead of the VZW SIM with access to high rates?

I will like to buy the Inspire 4G thru amazon and plan to use it in Costa Rica, where we use the same 2G and 3G bands as AT&T (850). Nevertheless I’m not sure if after the SIM/IMEI unlock, it will work with a Costa Rican SIM card? It is very common for us to buy unlocked At&t or T-Mobile phones and use them in Costa Rica.. but I have my concerns.
Last December I bought a Prepaid AT&T Phone (Samsung A107) on a trip to the US, but after doing a SIM/IMEI unlock, the Prepaid phone didn’t recognized my Costa Rican SIM card. And even before that, while still been in the US, I was not even able to use the AT&T SIM card on my unlocked Touch Pro2 (EUR version).
My worst fear is that AT&T is doing some sort of “Hard Sim Lock” to their phones.. and I will kill myself for buying an expensive paperweight.

Hi, I can't 100% answer your question but I do know why your SIM cards weren't interchangeable. We lock all PUK codes on all prepaid SIM cards to where you can only use that SIM on that phone. If you would've gotten a "regular" SIM you could've used it on another carriers phone. As to why the non AT&T SIM didn't work maybe they scammed you and it never got unlocked.

Thanks for your explanation. So basically and after reading other posts regarding unlocking this phone, the Inspire 4G should work overseas without any inconveniences, after inserting the SIM/IMEI unlock code that you buy from any “respected” and “trusted” site (and as long as the 3G Band is 850) ?
I was going to buy the unlocked Desire HD (Eur Version), but regretfully it wouldn’t work with any Latam 3G Band (as it happened with my Touch Pro2, that only works with 3G band 2100+900).
I got an Inspire 4G on Monday, unlocked it, and my existing SIM card from another country (also in latam) worked right away. Been using it since then both in the US and back home.
So unless there is some lock on the SIM card itself, it should work fine, I think.

Hmm 2 new members and advertising new site?
The AT&T Inspire only has North American UMTS radios 850 and 1900 Mhz. It lacks the 2100 radio necessary for 3 and 4G in Europe.
The phone will work on Europe's 2G Edge network. HTC should have put the 2100 Mhz radio in the Inspire but they didn't. This is the real gripe I have with this phone.

Doesn't the desire hd cover the european market with 2100? I suppose if you are traveling it is an issue but otherwise I see no reason for att to be adding something to this phone that already exists in one of its twins. Also it is not marketed as a "world" phone by at&t either.
Whats the key code / combination on the inspire to check the status of the sim?
I may be new on the forums, but I've been lurking for a while. Heck, I learned about that site from here, and the various threads on the forum on unlocking/rooting were one of the things I kept in mind when deciding to buy the phone.
geogkdam asked if the site worked; all I'm saying is it worked for *me*. I claim no guarantees it would work for anyone else, and frankly, I don't care much either; I'm just happy I was able to unlock the phone I bought on Monday withing a few minutes.

It'll work on EDGE in Europe, which sucks for data, but at 20 bucks a megabyte while roaming, why would you want to?
I'll be taking my Inspire to London and Paris in a couple months and since I need to be reachable on my own number, I will suck it up and roam, but data will be off, so I couldn't give a crap about whether or not it's EDGE or 3G. It'll just be voice and text, and not much of that. I have an AT&T Nexus One with the 2100 band that I'll be bringing along too, I'll grab a local SIM and use that for data. I'll just have personal hotspot turned on and connect my Inspire to it.

AT&T also offers packages which would reduce your voice, data and text costs. Have you looked into them? Here's a link
I can't provide a link since I don't have the min. number of posts required to post here but Google "AT&T World" and you'll get the necessary info. The texting deal is a good deal if you plan to text between 20 and 50 texts. If less than 20 just go with the standard .50/text sent from Europe. If between 20&50 opt for the $10 one time charge (which drops your per text rate to .20/text).
I would also assume that free Wi-FI hotspots are plentiful around Europe??? Does anyone have first-hand experience with that?
I was wondering if Verizon would give me an unlock code even if im not a customer because I was thinking of buying a DROID 2 global off of craigslist to use overseas also how well would it work for regular use on gsm??

If you're looking to use the phone on GSM I wouldn't recommend buying a D2G that isn't previously unlocked. Unlocking these phones is mostly a matter of luck apparently.
I bought one and got the code straight from Verizon and it still didn't work. I ended up buying it to a friend that was moving to the states and then I got another one on eBay that was already unlocked.

Simple answer - they can, but they will not. Personal advice: avoid Droid 2 Global if you plan to use it on UMTS networks (GSM(2G) is fine). CDMA is also fine (if you use carrier with compatible CDMA network)

What's wrong with UMTS?
I'm using it on a UMTS/HSPA network since June. No issues at all.

Yep, GY in Japan and another member here on Telstra in Australia report great experience. Others like me in Canada (on pretty. Much all Canadian operators), members from Europe, Central and South America are having issues with 3G.

I have spent a few hours researching this issue and I am not sure it will work out, hoping I can get some guidance from someone more educated on the subject.
I currently travel back and forth between Kuwait and the United States on a regular basis. I really like the Samsung Galaxy SIII, so I am considering buying one at full price from Verizon. I have been using Verizon's service since 2009 and have never been late on a bill or anything. I would like to be able to buy a Samsung Galaxy SIII and unlock the SIM for use in Kuwait on a local carrier like Wataniya, Zane, Viva or any other local carrier in Kuwait as long as the phone will work. Of course 4G would be nice, but I can live without it if I am stuck using 3G while out of the states. I would prefer not to pay for a separate phone for both locations, as I do not want to use some crappy flip phone while I'm in Kuwait, but I do not want to pay for two expensive smart phones either.
The representative at the Verizon store told me I would have to go with an iPhone, but I do not like to give companies like Apple money and I certainly prefer Android over iOS.
Any help / guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The RAZR Maxx is the other phone I have been considering. Are you saying that I can do what I need to do with the RAZR Maxx without all the trouble this thread implies I am going to have to go through to get it working with the Samsung Galaxy SIII?

Yes. The razr maxx is global ready, however you still would have to hack it to make it accept a international sim card.

There is a dual sim adapter and app that you can use on the s3, if you search xda you will see what im talking about. I suggest that you post in that topic and see if there is any better info.
Good luck it looks like the s3 will work but i would get as much info as possible. And the dev edition might be an option. I don't know the price difference between it and Verizon version. But it might be worth seeing if one has different specs for the area you want to use it in. Good luck

No need to consider the Developer version now with the bootloader unlocked. (e.g. there isn't going to be anything the developer edition allows you to do that the regular retail version will not). With regard to which bands the Verizon S3 supports, in theory the MSM8960 chipset (Snapdragon S4) supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1700/1900/2199, CDMA 800/850/1900, and LTE 700/750/1700/1900. The thread linked earlier seems to offer some hope of getting it working, but such things are always going to be a little complicated.

I travel overseas extensively. Mainly HK/China and EU countries.
I want to use my phone and it would be nice to not have to swap Sims as I then have to update my contact information to customers etc.
I have the unlimited plan and paid full retail for my phone.
I have rooted my phone and am running the stock debloated ROM.
Can Verizon support a modification to the phone that would allow usage on GSM networks?
Alternatively is there some sort of service available that will forward calls from my VZW phone number to a PPsim card?
Additionally, it unclear to me with these unlock processes, do I have to modify my phone upon return to the states and use of my native Sim card should I choose one of these options.
Makes no sense to me why Verizon would want to inhibit this feature on this phone. They could charge me exorbitant rates and get away with it just for the convienence of not having to screw with apn's swap Sims etc.

I have a Droid 2 Global (which I bought outright) and wanted to use it in Europe (instead of carrying a separate unlocked Cricket GSM phone). I called up VZN, asked them about it and they said "we see you have met your contract obligation and have not had any phones unlocked in 14 months -- here is the code and here is what you do with it".
I did what they said and have been able to pop in multiple foreign SIM cards with no problem (I did have to switch off VZN however so I did not connect to their partners).
So, my question is - are the guts in the VZN S3 such that all one needs to do is call them up and ask for the unlock code (assuming you have not done this in past 14 months)? Or is the guts of the S3 not really 'global' and hence the need to root, unlock and load new ROMs to use them abroad?

The S3 has the hardware for international roaming. As I understand, Verizon announced that it will have a software update to make it work as an international phone (together with the rezound). Knowing Verizon's history on timelines, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hi all,
My SGS2 recently just died all of a sudden and while trying to flash a new firmware it bricked. =( Hence I'm currently looking for a replacement phone and have always wanted to get the Razr Maxx HD simply for it's battery life (a phone that has to be continuously plugged in to use all features is so pointless). Unfortunately, I am from Singapore which means the purchase is rather "risky" since it's expensive to ship and return is not an option. Hence I have some questions that will help me make a decision. Hope you guys can help me out. That fact that the 2 models are in the same forum doesn't really help make things clear.
1) Boot Loader
I've read that Dev version comes unlocked while Consumer (Verizon) version comes locked. I've also seen instructions on rooting the Verizon version; I'm a little confused. Can I or can I not root the consumer version?
2.i) Rooting
This is actually quite similar to (1). There are some apps that I use that requires rooting (e.g. Titanium Backup); rooting is essential to me. If I were to lay my hands on a non-Dev version, can I root it?
2.ii) Rooting
The current "procedure" for rooting is to downgrade to ICS 4.0.4 and then root, right? Is it safe to update to JB after that? There appears to be several posts claiming that they've lost their root after update. I assuming they didn't follow the post linked below? Also, rooting will not be possible (yet) if the firmware is on 4.1.2?

3) Carrier Unlocked
I need to get an unlocked version for it to work with anything else other than Verizon - am I right? I've seen someone post that the XT926 is only locked in the US; it'll work on any other GSM carrier in the rest of the world. Is this true? Or did the guy mix it up with the XT925? There are many such posts.
4) Where to buy
Since return and shipping is an issue, I'm trying to stay away from eBay (unless the seller has good record). Unfortunately, many online retailers seem to be out of this phone! Can someone recommend a place where I can purchase the phone from? It does not have to ship internationally as I am able to arrange for courier services.

Yes, I am looking for the "Maxx HD", aka the XT926.
Anyway, can I summarize that, if I were to lay my hands on a "consumer" version,
1) Bootloader is locked; I won't be able to flash custom ROMs
2) Rooting is possible if the phone ships with ICS. Can also possibly upgrade to 4.1.1 after rooting.
I have the MAXX HD and to answer as I can:
Bootloader is locked on the consumer version. I believe the developer edition is unlocked.
The consumer version can be rooted if it is not on the 4.1.2 release. Earlier releases can be back-leveled to 4.0.4 which can be rooted. Once rooted, root can be preserved with OTA Root Keeper. SuperSU seems to survive updates as well if it is set to preserve itself.
I believe you can use custom ROMs if you have root (I started fiddling with Safestrap when I had issues with the update and had to fastboot my phone to stock.)
Once at 4.1.2 the phone cannot be back-leveled and cannot be rooted (yet hopefully).
As I understand it: GSM is locked domestically (US). Unlocked internationally if the phone has been activated domestically first.

To add on to what others have said -- yes the phone is SIM unlocked, though it will *not* work on ATT/TMobile in the US without a firmware tweak (search around, it's an easy thing to do -- though I haven't done it myself.) The most recent update fixed the issue with roaming in India, though I haven't verified that myself. But the phone will definitely work in Australia as that's where I have been using it.
The phone works fine with the following caveats:
1. There is annoying "This SIM card is from an unknown source" warning when you turn the phone on. Easily bypassed by pressing "OK"
2. Tethering will not work on foreign SIMs, it tries to communicate back to the VZW network to verify your eligibility, which of course fails on a foreign SIM.
3. If you actually care about using the phone internationally on VZW's network, you need to call and have your account setup to allow for 4G international roaming (this is different then the 3G intl feature)

1) Yea, I can definitely live with that. I don't turn my phone on/off frequently.

3) Not a concern for me.

Now, I would like to buy the XT926 however sellers on ebay are quoting... "* Quad-band GSM and 3G support (available only outside of the United States with Verizon roaming)" That concerns me however I don't believe it's true.
So you have not had any issues with your XT926 working on GSM and 3G in Australia ?

be cautious of these sellers on ebay. i just helped another member a couple days ago who bought an unlocked 925 from there (or so he thought).
after i had him check a few things for me, i confirmed without a doubt, it was a locked 926. now he has to file a claim.
you would be better off getting it from swappa.
here are the specs for the 926, it will not work on any other frequencies than those listed. others are just not built into the phone, so there is no way they can work, as far as im aware.
im not sure how they apply to your situation. i think you would have to find out what they use in your area, and see if they are listed in the specs.
