Hey guys, was just browsing youtube and came across this video, thought I share it here.. take a look at it..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6eEDZva1W8
A standard ATT Atrix 2 running Ubuntu OS.. The guy from canonical also says that ubuntu can be run on android kernels.. so maybe we might see Ubuntu on our phone.. Just keep your fingers crossed and pray for it.. Just wanted to let you all know..
LOL...
This is our webtop, that came with the phone, running on 2.3.6. This was eliminated by MOTO when we upgraded to ICS.

No listen very closely... the guy from ubuntu says very sepcificly that it is running 2.3.6 "gingerbread" right out of the box. I promise that is not the ubuntu Phone OS. this is android 2.3.6 and that is webtop, webtop is a version of ubuntu that runs on android and the atrix2 really had one of the best versions of it. Again look at the phone it is the Atrix2 and watch the Ubuntu Phone OS video on the ubuntu site, not this one, as this one on youtube the date is feb 25 2012... Ubuntu did not announce the Phons os until last month, since it is running 2.3.6, I am 100% sure this is NOT the ubuntu phone OS...
The video about the Ubuntu Phone OS specifically states that it ONLY runs on 100% unlocked phones.... and if you look at the title of the video is the give away... look that title up on google "Ubuntu for Android".
P.S. webtop is the real ubuntu OS for android phones... LOL
P.P.S that camcorder app is the standard 2.3.5/2.3.6 camcorder app that came with the att phones, I just flashed back to 2.3.6 last night and that was the exact same app... and yes you too can download that same ubuntu like wallpaper for your android homescreen from the google play store.
Also look who you are talking with about this, I have been working in and on linux since 92, and also who is the master at webtop in here? just think about this once more. when we were on 2.3.6 I had 11.04 working on our webtop install running Gnome 2, Gnome 3, and even unity, but unity was very very slow, so was Gnome 3, Gnome 2 had the best performance, so did xfce. If you look at the writing underneath the video they talk about performance, and this is about equal to our webtop performance which is not the best.

Yeah, you are correct.
Oh I love the GNex, with Ubuntu. It is the best phone os I have used yet.
I have been working with several other devs coding the core apps package to be ready for release day, it is very nice so far.
I can't wait to see what comes of the Ubuntu phone os. It can only get more awesome!
I think it's a good moment to end this discussion.

My Optimus V is android-native (upgraded to CM7 with zefie Xionia kernel,) which I do use for phone functions and browsing; but for the past week or so I've been running Debian (first squeeze now sid) on it...
first a chroot while experimenting and getting Squeeze set up, now no chroot needed, can run Debian apps straight from the terminal, and non-driver-required functions. 3G Net access works. Haven't messed around with the wifi or bluetooth in Debian yet since I don't use 'em much.
working on getting x11 running native, since VNC access is slow and bites (works but no sound and gnash gives me a blank frame. I want flash compatibility, blast it!.) Anyone wants to help with native X on the Optimus V, let me know.
I'd post a howto and scripts and such, but I haven't hit my 10-post count yet here on XDA because of the limits on where I can post and I'm not gonna spam post just to get my count up. Why waste space spamming so I can post in appropriate locations just 'cause there's a protection against spammers which would force me to either spam or post silly/unimportant data? Once I eventually hit 10 posts in some way I feel is appropriate to do it, I'll put up a howto for anyone interested.

The dual-form nature of this item would fit a dual-boot scenario perfectly. Boot into Android when used as a tablet, boot into Ubuntu when docked. Just curious as to the possibility of this.
As far as I know, Ubuntu supports ARM architecture, so the Tegra 2 chip should work well with it. Ubuntu 11.04 was just released with the integrated Unity interface, which looks wonderful with the touchscreen: http://unity.ubuntu.com/projects/utouch/
The Unity 2D interface should fly on the Tegra 2, even if the Unity 3D mode lags.
Now I know that on the Xoom, we were able to run Ubuntu on a VNC server and connect to it locally, but that is obviously not an ideal solution, due to VNC's weakness, and the general inefficiency of it.
Are there any devs working on something like this so far? I am sure there would be a very sizable audience for something like this. I'd be happy to do any necessary testing, and I'm sure more will as well. I also wouldn't mind taking this as an opportunity to get involved with the dev community (I have a thorough background in CS, just no experience with this specifically), I'd be happy if anyone were to take me under their wing. =)
You're not the only one hoping for this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053641
I was just thinking about this yesterday. Dual booting Ubuntu and Android would make this the perfect device for me.
i would also love the ability to run linux on mine
I'm tempted to wait until this is guaranteed to happen before buying this thing. I need a new portable device for developing on the go, and I also want and need a Honeycomb device for testing apps and casual content consumption.
At the same time though, if anyone knows of a site or thread dedicated to making this dual-boot happen (similar to the dedicated Toshiba AC100 page here http://tosh-ac100.wetpaint.com/page/Ubuntu ), I wouldn't mind learning all about it and potentially help if I can, so please share.

There are some devs who definitely pulled this off on the Atrix and I had Ubuntu on my phone so I'm sure we can get it on the transformer. I'll try to find them and see if similar methods can be used.
It'll take years but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If I can do this on my old ass wm6.5 phone then it's possible on the TF!
Maybe it wont take years, but more of these tablets have to hit the market. Still so many people waiting on their preorders, me included.
I think that there might be quite the interest in making this happen. I remember reading somewhere that Ubuntu allready runs on the Tegra2, so why should it be far into the future before we see it running on the Transformer?
Sorry for any typos. I have fat fingers, a 4" screen, a small child and a dictionary gone wild...
here's to hoping
So far i'm quite impressed with this little tablet. It crunches bytes as fast as i can throw them, and customizing it was easy enough. Although with the dock station and Tegra 2 it does feel more like a netbook than a tablet.
Android 3.0 IMO is the best compromise between a desktop and mobile phone OS. Although it's expandability is not quite what i would wish it to be. Possibly once more developers gear their programs for the higher resolutions and more powerful CPUs this will change. For now dual booting Ubuntu and Android would be perfect.
I'm on board with any project coming about to make this happen, and would offer up my hardware and feedback for beta testing. Hope to see a dedication in this direction soon!

Yeah, it's VNC. That's not that hard, we're talking about straight booting INTO Ubuntu.
i have this image from my desire, which boots linux xlde (or something) i cant get it to connect to that image. Pockecloud just get Server disconnected.... maybe another image.. actually that was loading it from removable MicroSD, im now going to try copying to the internal memory "SDCARD" as that would be what the script would have orignally been setup for. I will post results as soon as this has finished pasting the files...
EDIT: still cant get this to work, seems like terminal is ending too quickly which i think means the loopback memory doesnt work, i think thats how it works anyway.
No lock with WYSE pocket cloud or android vnc, i think we need another build for honeycomb, well not so much the OS but the Tegra chip instead.
ubuntuforums.org
There is a thread over at ubuntuforums.org regarding this matter, though they have a different take on it.
One of the posts state:
Re: Asus Eee Pad Transformer
I plan to get one (not available in my region yet, plus I hear there'll be a 3G version next quarter) and install Ubuntu on it, albeit with KDE/Gnome instead of Unity.
There's not technical reason it can't run Ubuntu, it's just a matter of getting the boot loader working. The instructions seem simple enough, although dual booting with Android might be a little more challenging.
If anyone does get one and install Ubuntu on it, please let us know how it goes.

Maybe it's not all that farfetched getting Ubuntu to run on this device, or any other Tegra2 base tablet.
The original thread can be found at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741103&highlight=eee+pad+transformer&page=1
looks like dual booting may be fairly difficult; I wouldn't mind soloing ubuntu touch os on mine...
I think dual booting may be difficult, but I think chain booting (right terminology?) from Android first and then into Ubuntu would probably be possible.
I don't think many people understand how hard it will be to create a bootable version of Ubuntu. VNCing is easy for the most part.
Would it be possible to use the motorola xoom guide to get ubuntu running with vnc on the eee transformer?
Sorry for any typos. I have fat fingers, a 4" screen, a small child and a dictionary gone wild...
Is the VNC version that bad? Is it very slow or the picture is not full color? I'd like to use it maybe for Open Office (or something lighter) and some programming in text editor.
Looks like there has been significant progress on this. backtrack has been released for arm.. its a security-centric distro, but its built on an ubuntu base.
I'm downloading the img now.. dont know about dual boot though. guess someone needs to port grub over first =)
I cant post links....but a search for 'backtrack5 xoom' should get you there.
I rooted my Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8010) and I ran Ubuntu on top of android using Complete Linux Installer app
I wanna know if you can install and run ubuntu NATIVELY on the galaxy note 10.1 because I know people have installed ubuntu natively on the Asus Transformer pad, and I dont see why cant this device handle it.

Hi! I'm also looking for a native build of Ubuntu for the Galaxy Note 10.1 but what I wanna ask you is the performance of chroot. Are you able to type in LibreOffice without a lag? I'm one click away from ordering a device and I really need a full office suite for educational reasons (I'm a student).
What is more, my own hopes are about another way of getting better Ubuntu. The project you use (linux on android) aims to have native video output for some devices and it might be really better than a fully native Ubuntu. The GUI will be fast but at the same time Android will stay one click away with full support etc. What do you think?
hi there,
im a student too. my aim was to buy the TF300T at first. then when i went to the shop, the staff told me that the TF300T batch was full of returns because it was pretty sh**ty So i decided to buy the N8010 (Galaxy Note 10.1)
which is really better than the transformer because it has 2gb ram all the other cool features.like s pen and all that. i wanted to buy the transformer because it came with the keyboard dock which you can turn it into sorta netbook then i could take it to school or something. i was planning on installing ubuntu on it but ye.
so when i got this galaxy note 10.1, i rooted it and ran ubuntu like mentioned about. honestly, there is a slight lag but its not that extreme. only like milisecond(s) lag. *no other apps were running except for terminal emulator, vnc viewer and complete linux installer.
i think this is capable of doing more because literally ran a minecraft server in there LOL it loaded up pretty fast. but i havent connected into it and played yet. youtube video is working. which means it has flash support. my screen protector should arrive today so i can play around more with it. i'll load up ubuntu again. post some screen shots and maybe a video if u need one
the resources manages shows all four cores in the cpu and shows 1.8* of ram. which is good. and more than 1.2gb was available when i was running the office suite that was there.
Summary:
This is good for a start, im hoping to see developers start working on Galaxy Note 10.1 more and more. (i think its just this is still new cuz it only came out recently)
This device is really good for school. Snote app has so many features infact the device has 'samsung features' which i still havent touched on
Hoping to see some thirdparty keyboard docks for this since the samsung one is about 90-100 dollars (USD) i believe and about about 120-150dollars here in australia :/
I think the reason for the transformer pad to have native support cuz asus gave out the source code on their website ? *once i was in there website and it told me to choose the OS between android and other os*
which i belive u can install another os pretty much.
asus also had kinda a bios sorta menu when u boot it up.
hope that helps
if u wanna know anything else, simply reply

In the case of Transformers, ASUS had open-sourced the bootloader and it was capable of booting something different than Android from scratch. That's a different story for Samsung GN 10.1, but we have a chance for native build since Samsung is developing drivers for the Exynos platform and more or less the bootloader they have is open-sourced or cracked.
As for the OFFTOPIC about learning, thank you a lot for your reply! If you can post a video of LibreOffice typing experience, it would be nice but there are a lot on YouTube already and impression is more important than videos. Personally, I have used on other N-trig tablets LectureNotes (non-free app from market) and Quill(fully open-source) and I find them many times better than S Note.
BTW, once Canonical should release the Ubuntu for Android official project, m?
I think I'll buy one SGN and join you in the battle for better software
I made a video of it
hey,
I made a video of it last night... its in Full HD but dsnt have my voice.(has background music) im still getting used to making videos and putting it up on youtube :
I'll start uploading it now.. theres about 1.01GB so might take some hours to upload
I was watching that video on XDA TV, about Samsung hating XDA, apparently samsung limiting their source codes and all that...I dunno whats gonna happen
anyway wish this was like the asus transformer where you can run other os
we just have to hope for the best :fingers-crossed:
Yes im waiting till ubuntu releases the version for android ! i've seen their official video and its really awesome
Niceee when are you going to buy it ?
P.S. oh sh**t i'm sorry, it wasn't libre office it was open office since i had downloaded ubuntu 10.1 not 12
im pretty sure it would be the same experience with typing...

Hello,
If you want to root the Stock ICS XSA for N8010, you will have to download the firmware from : http://www.hotfile.com/dl/177420056/592b6c1/N8010XWALI6_N8010XSAALI1_XSA.zip.html and root it your self.
I have attached the rooting files (thanks to zedomax ) and extract the files to a folder. and follow zedomax's instructions.
Hope this helps...
BUT this will not get rid of the Samsung user interface. If you want to get rid of the STOCK SAMSUNG STUFF, you will have to consider flashing CM10

Great news for tablet owners. Ubuntu will support Nexus 7. So Tegra 3 devices first and maybe Exinox later...
I really hope Team Hacksung will jump into this and make out tablet the best device ever. It will be much better then any W8 RT device because of Ubuntu ARM repositories, lots and lots of app (Libre Office, Gimp, VLC..etc).
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7
Wow thanks for this info im looking forward for ubuntu to be come available on my galaxy note 10.1
Any update on this? That is a real shame no one ported Ubuntu to Note 10.1 when there is Ubuntu running even of Asus Transformer TF101. Lack of drivers?
I dont really know honestly. Its just maybe the devs arnt putting much attention to this... WHY ? i dont know. its a great device. better that transformer pad TF300T.... its new.. and 2gb ram and all that. can handle ubuntu very well i suppose. even the nexus 7 got native from Ubuntu officially.. comeon devs!!!

It would be better if there was a native distro of Ubuntu for this. Ubuntu running on top of android maybe laggy (with your requirements). I still dont understand why developers arnt looking into this If u have a good internet connection at home you can use Splashtop to stream your pc into the tablet. all the touch features work. Its free for local use but if u want to use it remotely (pc at home and tablet at workplace) theres a membership for it.

Ubuntu like Android is based on Linux so that isn't a surprise that it runs on the Nexus. Linux OS have been dual booted on windows computers for a long time so seeing Android dual-booted on Windows phones isn‘t a surprise either. Also those are dual booted not really replacing your android OS. The pic your talking about is a Ubuntu mobile OS so it should actually replace stock android like a custom rom does. I will also add that iOS is closed source software so you risk legal action doing that. The thread you linked to is closed.

I heard ubuntu is officially being ported to phones, from factory. I was wondering if anyone might work on a port for the p500? Also, as a sidenote, i technically have a p509 but since i flashed the baseband and did something else it always says its a p500 in my settings. Is this an issue? When flashing roms does it matter if i pick p500 or p509 roms?

When flashing roms does it matter if i pick p500 or p509 roms?

The p500 doesn't have enough juice to fully enjoy Ubuntu. Especially with unity.

Ubuntu was introduced on Galaxy Nexus, witch is a dual core, so I think it will do on every dualcore with 1gb ram to run smooth mobile version of Ubuntu

Said that about JB. Runs just fine.
Ubuntu and "unity" are basically a launcher and some apps running over a dalvikless CM10.1. There are loads of knockoff launchers on Play to play with and the phone has not problem running them. The "unity" here has little to do with the unity desktop on a desktop. That is based on Gnome-3 while the phone Ubuntu is running QML, QT4. 17 meg library--can compile apps and play with this stuff right now. (Check on kde-apps.org)
Ubuntu will have natively compiled apps instead of the Dalvik-Java mess. If correctly compiled for our hardware, they should run better. Want to try a sample? Install the Vire launcher and see. There is life without Java after all.
However, they will certainly not even think of supplying us with an image. Our heroic young (or older) devs will have to roll their own for us. What I would like to see is a version that has Dalvik. There are (will be for quite a time) just a handful of basic apps for Ubuntu phones and there are just too many useful Android apps to simply abandon. Do not expect to simply run apt-get and use the rich app repository available for Ubuntu/Debian Linux.
However, have a big-enough sdcard (>3 gig to spare, I mean dedicate)? Debian with an Xfce desktop can be installed and used along with Android. Vnc-ing a real desktop. There is an XDA forum for this! Better get swap back into our kernels first!
Canonical only provides images for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. There are other images from XDA (you can see them in Ubuntu Touch's wiki). There Samsung Galaxy S too.
Anyway, I won't hope. If we haven't Firefox OS which is much more lightful, we won't see Ubuntu.

I was not talking about Ubuntu touch -___- (it might run Ubuntu touch someday unofficially)
I'm talking about Ubuntu desktop.
I have run Ubuntu touch on my nexus 7 and i do enjoy it. It will be quite good once it moves away from being a chroot over cm.

According to a linux over android thread, there is no (ready-made) Ubuntu image for Armv6. One can, however install Debian. A full gnome3 (Unity is based on that) or KDE dektop would be to heavy so comes with XFCE or such. Desktop is run using VNC.
Need at least 3gig available on the sdcard to get started.
Best have an Android ROM with swap enabled in the kernel.
Guys, could someone please tell me how ubuntu is going to be different from android in function? I mean in actual use? I'm a newbie......

Trust me I tried Ubuntu on my nexus 4 and was not impressed by their work. Really hard to navigate. And also no apps. Difficult multitasking and so on. It looks all clean and cool on the video but in reality it is over confusing

I have the space, but I don't know if swap is enabled in the kernel. Can I get a how-to to run Debian with XFCE please? It'll be fun
