[TUT]Get whirleyes BMM 0.3.2 working on our a2 [OUTDATED] - Motorola Atrix 2

THIS TO INFORM YOU THAT NONE OF THE STEPS ARE REQUIRED FOR 0.3.4. I AM JUST KEEPING THIS FOR INFORMATION AND THE WARNINGS AND OTHER POSSIBLE ISSUES YOU MIGHT FACE. AND AS A GENERAL DISCUSSION FOR BMM.
Hey everyone, whirleyes updated and released his amazing recovery.. It allows you to multiboot and has ton of more amazing tools..
Go here for original thread he posted in the razr forum.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005187
well, its tested and made only for razr, but theres a simple way to get it working on our Atrix 2.. here is how you can do it..
Before You Get Started, Here is an
IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL BMM IF YOU USED A2 BOOTSTRAPPER BEFORE. THAT WILL MESS THINGS UP WITH YOUR LOGWRAPPER.BIN. THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BOOT LOOP AFTER REBOOT. NOW IF FOR SOME REASON YOU DID NOT READ THIS, AND GET A MESSAGE ABOUT BMM ASKING YOU TO GET HELP, BEST THING FOR YOU TO DO IS RECHARGE YOUR BATTERY FULLY AND FXZ BACK. OR THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL HAVE TO USE MCGRUVYER METHOD OR ANOTHER A2 BATTERY. USER RAD7 RECENTLY HAD QUITE A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH HIS BATTERY DYING AFTER BMM MESSED WITH LOGWRAPPER. YOU HAVE BEEN INFORMED AND WARNED.
1) Download and install BMM from google play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.projectlense.bootmenu.manager
2) Our phone does not have a partition for internal storage.. so we use the data partition for it.. To do so, just open a root browser like root explorer and navigate to /etc/bmm/conf
3) Open "recovery.fstab" with a text editor
4) The last line will be something like this
/int vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p25
5) just change 'vfat' to 'auto' and 'mmcblk1p25' to 'userdata' (its the same though..)
so that it looks like this
/int auto /dev/block/userdata
and of course save it and close it..
6) Done.. you are good to go.. Happy Multi Booting..
Just some tips
On your first reboot, tap the android, go to settings-->System_2-->Partition setup and tap on ACTIVATE. This formats cdrom partition to ext2.
Now go back 2 two steps, and select any other system(3-6). choose Partition setup, tap on system.img, tap on Create, select the size, create it. go back and do the same with data.img and cache.img.
Once thats done, go back and select recovery, select switch system. choose your system that you created the images for, the colour will change, install any custom rom.. Enjoy!!
NOTE: BMM stores the images in internal memory(/int/clockworkmod/virtual/system_(num)). Since we dont have emmc partition and are using the data partition for /int, doing a factory reset will wipe it out and you will lose all your other roms.. So be carefull..
NOTE 2: USE ONLY SYSTEMS 3 TO 6 FOR CUSTOM ROMS.. SUSTEM 2 IS CDROM PARTITION.. YOU ACTIVATE IT ONCE AND DONE.. DONT TOUCH IT AGAIN.. ITS ONLY 12MB..
IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT INSTALL BMM IF YOU USED A2 BOOTSTRAPPER BEFORE. THAT WILL MESS THINGS UP WITH YOUR LOGWRAPPER.BIN. THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BOOT LOOP AFTER REBOOT. We already know we can use bootmenu manager.
And, as i know, we don't have to do anything to run this app correctly.

you are talking about the older version, i.e, 0.2.7. for that, you dont have to do anything.. this one is to run the latest version 0.3.2..
and using this, you can have not just two, but 4 systems + stock..

Re: [TUT]Get whirleyes BMM 0.3.2 working on our a2
Thanks for this! I can say that version 0.3.2 is an amazing improvement over 0.2.7
@everyone - go thank whirleyes for his awesome app!
edit: link in original post
@OP - can you confirm that it would be possible to actually install up to 4 roms at once on the atrix 2? What other partitions does Bootmenu utilize for this?

Re: [TUT]Get whirleyes BMM 0.3.2 working on our a2
On which ROM did you try this? I guess it would be a bit different to get it working on the chinese jb leak as it does have internal storage enabled

Tried on the jb itself.. The hktw rom emulates internal storage at /data/internal_sd its not a separate partition.. Tried using that.. But for some reason I couldn't get it.. Feel using data partition is better.. Btw, I am currently on the jb Wang posted..

That depends on the amount of space you have left on /data. If are having a retail a2, flash the JB leak and you should get 6 GB for /data..

I'll try to automate this by determining devices type. (ro.product.board)
But still hard for me to give edison full support because some part is still hardcoded for spyder.
Just don't use firmware flashing function.
Flashing boot.img theoretically should be OK. Don't play with CID ~
I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong, I have no idea how it will behave on edison.

WHOA!! So I just escaped a possible brick!
I was on the official JB leak and was experimenting with kexec(with the files meant for ICS).. and that used to mess up my CID.. luckily, I had bmm installed and had a backup of my CID(not through bmm)..
well, bmm automagically found out that my CID was messed, and bypassed it.. later I flashed my CID and luckily, everything was fine..
So, in short,
1) Bypassing CID works.. :good:
2) Flashing CID works.. :good:
maybe you already know this, but just wanted to say, using kexec on official JB update might mess up CID.. I guess this is moto's work..
so you guys with razrs be careful..
glad to see you around..

It isn't showing there for me either - trying a reboot and maybe a reinstall of the program.
EDIT - Well, that was silly - after installing from the Play Store you need to click on the icon and install it a second time? Huh.
So, I have a question - when we're creating the partitions for system, data and cache how large would you recommend we make them?

There are a lot of issues with kexec and this phone, and why we never did any "real" work with it, once it was fully developed. There are other issues with kexec and this phone, but it really is not something I would put anymore time into, with this phone. Motorola has really done some very nasty things to this phone and continuing the evil with Atrix HD and making that phone even more locked down than this one.
There is really no reason to have a kexec kernel other than to say you made one. We have a form of OC and we have custom opensource roms, so kexec and kernels really are not needed on this phone.
P.S. kexec on this phone can be very dangerous as you will load the "stock" moto kernel during the bootloader check, then once booted kexec will unload that "stock" kernel and load the new one, but I warn you that if the ROM is not built to handle the kernel disastrous consequences can and will occur.

Hi Ravikirancg,
I have a question with regards to your CM10.1 and the patch. I have an A2 AT&T running BMM 0.3.2 and SCV7 1st partition and ICS stock in 2nd partition. I am planning to flash CM10.1 in 2nd partition, my question is do I have to wipe system, cache and data or just the cache and data.
My apologies for posting this question here as I dont have access to post in dev forum .
Also I do not want to brick another A2

[GUIDE]How to load CM9 on GSIII

**this was a very early guide and most of the files and methods referenced in it are long outdated, sounds crazy I know as the phone has barely been out, but i recommend finding more recent guides at this point. I wanted to leave this up for archival reasons though. As of 7-22 I am running dhackers CM10 build with great results. Just don't forget to set max cpu clock back down to 1500 mhz if you don't want it over locked out of the box **
As per the usual disclaimer....at your own risk, be aware of IMEI loss issues and whatnot...basically cover your own butt.....and enjoy.....
7-15 2:46pm **As of right now voice and SMS are not working on my phone while other people report they are working fine. While you can still play around and see just how amazingly fast CM is on this phone, YMMV. If it doesn't work you need to know how to go back to stock before trying this.
7-29 this guide is very old, it pre-dates kexec and is only here for historical purposes
For clarification: The question was asked if one is supposed to follow the original Team Epic Kexec kernel instructions or these steps and the answer is two fold. If your goal is to install the UNOFFICIAL CM9 built by Invisiblek (which is the purpose of this thread), then you follow the steps in THIS THREAD ONLY. There are a couple steps and a couple files linked to in the original Kexec page that will not allow you to install CM9. That page was made for those wanting to try out their Kexec Proof of Concept KERNEL, not install a ROM of any kind.
This thread makes some assumptions, such as you already have a working install of the Android SDK and ADB, you already have the drivers installed, you are using the original USB cable that came with your phone, you know how to move around DOS to get to the directory where you downloaded the files, etc.......those lower level tasks are for another thread.
To Try Our Proof-of-Concept Kernel <<<The base of these instructions was the Team Epic Kexec Kernel page seen at this link, Many Thanks to them
Thanks to Invisiblek for clarifying and helping me get steps just right.
The following is an adaptation of the CM Kexec kernel proof of concept with the changes in files and steps necessary to load the latest CM9 work in progress. Be advised I take no credit at all. This is the work of Team Epic and Invisiblek. I just put this together for myself and for others who would like to try it with one caveat. DATA doesn't work! Voice and SMS only....and maybe 1xRtt data.....so you will be relying on WiFi for data! You've been warned!
Also, I highly suggest you use a free MD5 Hash checking utility to verify the integrity of the files you are downloading. That is why the MD5 hash is provided, so you can be sure you didn't get the wrong file or a corrupt download that could cause a BRICK!
If you don't follow the directions carefully you can end up with a brick! Ask questions after reading the OP if you still aren't sure. I probably won't know the right answer for sure. You may have to wait on someone with more experience in this to answer your question.
DO NOT ACCEPT AN OTA UPDATE WHILE RUNNING THIS SETUP
1. Download the recovery.img (MD5: f1c01ad20e02751a73188f173eb412ca), which combines our source-based kernel with our previously released CWM v4.
2. Flash the recovery.img following these instructions, that is:
Code:
adb push recovery.img /sdcard/
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 bs=256k
sync
3. Reboot into recovery (using volume up, home power buttons), wipe data, install one of invisibleks CM9 roms>click here for all of his CM9 roms< which do not have boot.img integrated, then continue with the steps below:
4. Download these additional files:
(required download)boot.img (MD5: db058f4b15df0fa1b9ee04a5c17cf103), which is invisibleks custom boot.img
It would be good at this point to read ahead and determine where you will be loading the next file. Keep in mind if you are in stock recovery and choose to wipe data, this will wipe the internal memory.
if you plan to load onto internal memory download this file boot_emmc_boot_img.zip (MD5: 84a3f98c194f6dedc583dbc75ccc34c2)
or
if you plan to load onto sdcard (ext) memory download this file boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip (MD5: 88904d7e69d455ff88756b4d1ad79aac), which are applied in recovery to kexec (boot) the custom boot.img.
5. Place boot.img either on the internal SD card (the /sdcard/ folder), or on the external SD card (the /mnt/extSdCard/ folder).
The boot.img kernel boots directly out of one of these folders, it will not (and should not) be flashed to the device.
6. If you're using the internal SD card, place boot_emmc_boot_img.zip in /sdcard/ as well. If you're using the external SD card, place boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip in /mnt/extSdCard/.
7. Reboot into recovery.
8. If using the internal SD card, select "Install zip from sd card" and then "choose zip from internal sdcard", then "boot_emmc_boot_img.zip". Alternatively, if using the external SD card, select "choose zip from sdcard", then "boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip".
At this point, the device should reboot "in the middle" of applying the update, temporarily booting boot.img. If the update "completes" and returns to the CWM menu, kexec has failed or the wrong recovery was loaded in the beginning. Please check the locations of boot.img, and boot_emmc_boot_img.zip or boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip and verify recovery.img file used was the correct one, verify using an MD5 hash checker.
9. Once booted, the custom kernel can be confirmed by checking "Kernel version" in "Settings", "About device". It should report:
3.0.8-gdefeb6f
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Sun Jul 8 04:27:58 EDT
2012
10. To reboot into the stock kernel, select "Restart" from the Power menu, which will actually reboot into CWM recovery. Press the Power button to select "reboot system now" and leave recovery.
11. You cannot simply power on your phone with this setup! In order to power on your phone you will have to hold volume up, home and power to boot into recovery and load the zip file you chose at step 4 where you chose either internal or external memory, so either "boot_emmc_boot_img.zip" or "boot_sdcard_boot_img.zip". If you do accidentally boot up by just hitting power, no big deal, it will give you all sorts of force closes, simply pull battery and boot back up using the Vol up, Home, power method.
If anyone would like to suggest further clarification, please do. To get the stock Google apps such as Play Store get the package HERE and install in recovery
Alternatively a more condensed version of this install procedure has been posted by nbsdx and can be found HERE.
7-15 2:46pm **As of right now voice and SMS are not working on my phone while others are working fine. While you can still play around and see just how amazingly fast CM is on this phone, YMMV. If it doesn't work you need to know how to go back to stock before trying this.
If you want to return to bone stock, simply go to THIS THREAD to get STOCK ROM IMAGE and then put your phone into Odin Download mode by following THIS THREAD and be sure to flash it using the PDA button. It will take a while, probably 20 minutes or so, it will take forever to boot up the first time but you will be on bone stock like new.
Very informative. Would read again.

dual boot
Being that we have to use kexec anyhow, it would be nice (especially with the state of current cm9 rom) if we could fully dual boot so as to keep stock system and data for stock kernel.
Like here,

I just installed successfully using the instructions in the OP so I can confirm it works correctly. Holy crap it's fast.

If you follow the steps in this thread, including using these links for your files, it will work without a problem.
I can't comment on why other guides on other sites using other files don't work.....and not really sure how it applies to this thread. Lets try to keep it on topic. If you have issues with the dual booting instructions, you might start a new thread to address that or jump in irc.freednode.net/verizons3 and graciously ask the people for help
When you flash the the CM9 rom built by Invisiblek it will come back out to CWR menu. At that point in the process I realized I hadn't copied the boot.img file into the root of my sd card, so i left it on the CWR menu, popped out the sdcard, copied the boot.img file over (already had the boot_sdcard_boot.img file on the root of sdcard), and popped the sdcard back in, chose advanced->reboot recovery, then followed the steps in this guide, worked perfectly.

You need to add one line to Invisiblek's updater-script that "flashes" the boot.img to the bootloader partition in the multi boot folder. Check out the sprint cm9 install for the line to add.
I have tested dual booting to work perfectly.

yes, will update OP once we have working 3G/4G data
as of right now my voice and SMS isn't working while others is.....trying to figure it out
I flashed back to stock, simply because I need to have voice and SMS working. I could deal without 3G/4G data for a little bit and use WiFi, but no SMS/Voice was a deal breaker on my phone. I have to be easily gotten in touch with for work and such. It was fun while it lasted.

No. Different files used, probably a different step or two also. I plan to edit this once CM10 builds are ready for public consumption. These instructions also don't include the automated kexec scripting work done recently that allows your device to cold boot into CM9.

Completely different processors.
Is there anyway to get the TouchWiz Camera on CM9? I really like that camera app.
I tried just putting it in /system/app and changing the permissions to rw-r--r-- and rebooting and nothing
Then i tried just installing it like a normal apk and it failed.

Is there anyway to get the TouchWiz Camera on CM9? I really like that camera app.
I tried just putting it in /system/app and changing the permissions to rw-r--r-- and rebooting and nothing
Then i tried just installing it like a normal apk and it failed.

It probably requires touchwiz frame work. It will take significantly more work than just dropping in an apk

[Q] BMM, Stock ROM and Custom ROMs

Hey all.
I just recently saw the light and came over to android from the iPhone 4s! I found a great deal on a used Atrix 2 and have been very happy with it so far. I have already rooted my device and have installed bootstrap. I've been reading up on all the custom ROMs and want to try a few - specifically Paranoidandroid, CM10.1, miui, numa and CM10 - hence the need for BMM.
I've already downloaded and purchases Titanium Backup and read up how to use it to back up my apps, their settings, wifi settings, bookmarks, etc.
I have figured out my next steps are to back up my apps and install paranoidandroid (because it comes with BMM). There are great instructions out there on how to dual boot and install another custom ROM, so I'm pretty comfortable there.
However, I want to be able to boot into the stock ROM as well - just in case (I'm paranoid like that - no pun intended :silly. I have not been able to find out much information on how to dual boot with the stock rom - which is the reason for this post.
I've already done a full backup with bootstrap, so I'm good there. I've downloaded RSDLite and the fxz as well as read up how to recover if I run into troubles.
Can someone explain to me how to install the stock ROM in BMM?
Thanks for everyone's help and a special THANK YOU to all the developers!!

Remove the bootstrapper recovery completely. Then install boot menu app from market and install the hijacks and go from there creating systems and installing ROMs just leave the system 1 which will be having stock in your case.

Sweet! Now I just need to research how to remove the bootstrapper recovery.
Thanks!!!!
:highfive:
How to remove bootstrap from Atrix 2
Ok,
After doing some research, I found out the following. Could someone please confirm these steps - I don't want to brick and/or bootloop my phone.
1 - Uninstall bookstrap.apk via settings > apps > atrix 2 bootstrapper > uninstall
2 - Delete file /system/bin/logwrapper
3 - Rename file /system/bin/logwrapper.bin to /system/bin/logwrapper
4 - Delete file /system/bin/hijack
5 - reboot * ^
* NOTE: all the research I've done mentions:
- deleting file /system/bin/mot_boot_mode and then
- renaming file /system/bin/mot_boot_mode.bin to /system/bin/mot_boot_mode.
However, I don't have a mot_boot_mode.bin. As I understand it, those of us on Atrix 2 do not have a mot_boot_mode.bin because our bootloader has not been cracked, and we can't boot directly into bootstrap. The .bin file is the original file that is backed up when bootstrapper is first installed. As such, you DO NOT want to delete mot_boot_mode, because it is the original file and is needed to boot. Can someone please confirm my thinking on this?
^ NOTE2: one post mentions deleting directory /preinstall/recovery
However, I do not have this directory. I just have /preinstall/ and it is empty. I'm assuming I can just leave this alone. Again, please confirm?
For steps 2 through 4, it is recommended to use RootExplorer, but I've also read that you can use ES File Explorer. I currently have ES File Explorer - can someone confirm that I can use this as well.
For reference, this is where I got my information:
http://theunlockr.com/2012/01/24/how-to-install-bootstrap-recovery-on-the-motorola-droid-razr/

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727884&page=2
All three sites above have to do with the droid razr, which is why I want conformation from those that are more knowledgeable than me on the Atrix 2.
Thanks again for everyone's help! :good:

Only do the steps 1-5 you mentioned ignore everything else. And yeah you can use ES file explorer too.

Ok,
I did it! I removed bootstrap and installed BMM...now I'm afraid to reboot!
I'm looking BMM > Manager > Systems > System 1 and the following boot options are all "ON"
- Custom kernel (2nd-boot)
- Custom kernel (kexec)
- Custom init (2nd-init)
- Insecure adb
Since I want to leave the stock ROM on System 1, do I want to turn all of these options "OFF"? I would think so since the custom ROM doesn't use any of these.
EDIT: I just looked in /system/bin/ and I don't see "hijack". I see logwrapper and logwrapper.bin though.
I Installed boot menu manager from Google Play and launched it (v0.3.4), then clicked on "Installer", then Install. I saw the message "fixing permissions & hijack" fly across near the end, and got the message "A system menu choices will be displayed during boot process."
So I guess everything is ok? This version is unlike v0.2.x and doesn't show you what has been installed successfully and what hasn't with checkmarks.
The lack of hijack in /system/bin/ really concerns me....
EDIT2: So I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115715&highlight=0+3+4
And modified the recovery.fstab as directed in OP. However, it still does not answer my previous questions.
Thoughts?
Thanks again!
John
The new BMM handles things a bit differently.Don't strain yourself too much.Hit the button and reboot and then join the flashing gang.

If you have a new logwrapper and a logwrapper.bin, then you have been hijacked.. There is no "hijack" binary used in the new bmm

no need to track down all those logwrappers
worked for me evrytime.
Thank You!!!
Hey, thanks to all you guys! I got it installed, and rebooted and everything works!
I have a few questions about using BMM, but I'll ask those questions in the appropriate thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115715).
Thanks again, you guys rock!

[Idea] dual boot

This is just one of my crazy thoughts,
It might be just an idea for devs...
As in computers,
Y can't we do dual partition, along with the existing one, such that flashing 2 different Roms in those 2 partitions..
And while booting with an option of swapping partitions,
Can't we use 2 Roms @ a time....
I know RAM will get ****ed up...
But just a curiosity to know, wether it's possible
Or
Had anyone tried this already!!!!

I am not saying it is impossible
But how it could be possible bcoz the system partition our pico is not enough for that
And for using two roms we have to make two sd-ext partitions and also we have to flash the whole rom except boot.img to the sd-ext partitions
And it is not possible till now
Bcoz we have to keep many file in system partition like lib ,bin, xbin

its definitely bro, but its damn hard, we need to have atlest 3(maybe 4 partitions in sd-card) one for system, one for data one for cache ...
And then the hardest part of all a switching mechanism ... many devices have switching mechanism such as multirom of nexus .. but as our pico boot partition is very small .. a whole lot of tweaking is needed to be done obtain dual boot... i'll try to work on it after fall july (exams this month !!)

I think we can create multiple boot partitions on SD card and flash our utility (which has a GUI that shows the list of all ROMs) on our real boot partition. This master utility should read and copy the contents of the corresponding boot partition of the selected ROM on SD card into 0x12c08000 physical and jump into it (not sure whether this jumping can be performed at a higher level, but we've done that at assembly level for S-OFF)
Is it possible to make sd-ext partition as
Boot partition?
If yes then it is easy to make multiswitch roms
But i think our pico's performance will degrade and also sd card life will also degrade

So... So...
option 1:
kexec_hardboot needed
multirom needs to be ported :fingers-crossed:
^Above two, which would take some time...
option 2:
In the meanwhile, it is possible to... boot two ROMs, with a derped boot.img. If two ROMs use the same kernel, it can be used to dual boot the two ROMs. And, yes, 4 partitions in sd-card (fat32>data>system>cache) required. switching ROMs could be done using the terminal emulator. bla bla, and stuff. and, I am doing serious talk here.
so, two options. the first one: real dual booting, devs need to work on it, and get the kexec hardboot patch onto our kernels first.
the second: namesake. a fake troll dual_boot, but still dual_boot is achieved (like i could, on the same pico).
And, life of sdcard... can't say. class 4, mine didn't get damaged, because i dual boot using the second option

Only required files are config'ed in kernel. the kexec binaries are separate, afaik.
Don't you know about boot manager app. Go check it in Google play store. It is not possible to make choose a rom to boot at startup as it comes in PC, but using boot manager, it's possible to select which rom you want to open after reboot.
But you will need to do partitions of your sd card. Maximum 4 roms are supported. The number of partitions depends upon how many roms you want to have.

[SOLVED] CWM + Cyanogenmod 10 installation help - Did I forgot anything ?

Hey XDA ! =D
I'm still interested in installing Cyanogenmod 10 on my LG Optimus One P500h, but I want to make sure I follow the steps properly first - this is my first time installing a custom ROM, and when I heard it was possible to install Android 4.0 on the P500h, I performed a backup from ROM Manager, and I "bricked" my device a few days ago. XD
I wouldn't want this to happen again, but at least, I must say I have more experience now, and learned a lesson.
Did many searches on how to install CWM with Cyanogenmod 10, I found many different ways to do it, and I'm still unsure of which procedure follow.
Read the FAQ and that was really helpful.
I will list the procedure that I would normally try - please correct me if I forget anything:
0. Root the device
Done that already. I'm on Android 2.3. When I flashed the KDZ on my LG (and so to my surprise, got me updated from 2.2 to 2.3.3) , I've used V20A_00.KDZ, so I *assume* this is the second baseband.
1. Compact/Trim Cyanogenmod ROM
Downloaded CM10 here. This look correct: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811325
January 8: Build 7/Final
I chose C10 over C11 because more things are compatible I believe - was it Bluetooth that did not worked under C11, but does on C10 ?
Anyways, that solve a known problem: many users said they loose network after the ROM installation. Shinobisoft confirmed it was because of the lack of space on the System partition, right ? Compacting the ROM would also fix problems for installing Link2SD ?
I've downloaded the tool "OOne ROM Editor" and opened it - it doesn't look complicated at all. What apps are safe to delete ? Will converting them to "user app" save space for system apps (I'm not sure - Where are the apps stored when defined as "User"? SD card rather than /System ?) ? Can I delete fonts without problems (I don't see why I can't keep ONLY 3-4 fonts, not 10) ? Then how much space will be left on the device ?
Read I cannot delete LatinIME.apk. Is this the default keyboard? 20MB is huge, there's no way to compact this file, right ?
Assuming there's like 10MB free, network will work, but I will have no choice but to use Link2SD to install apps fully on SD card, is this correct ?
2. Baseband stuff
Ehm, what are we referring to as "baseband" in first place?
All ROMs starting with CM7 are new baseband. If your device had Android 2.2 prior to flashing, you are on old-baseband. There is a patch for that also in the LG Optimus One FAQ on the first page, not sure which post off the top of my head tho. If your device had Android 2.3 on it then you have a new baseband device which shouldn't require any patches.

Click to collapse
Allright, this should make this a lot easier - as I said, I originally was on Android 2.2, when I bricked the phone, I flashed "V20A_00" throught KDZ Updated, then I rebooted as 2.3.3, so I shouldn't do anything, right ?
In "About Phone", it's listed "Software Version: LG-P500h-v20a".
3. Install ClockworkMod Recovery
This look like the tricky part.
A lot of people on other sites said to use ROM Manager...
shinobisoft said:
First, serious word of advice. Stay away from ROM Manager. It does not handle this device correctly.
Click to collapse
ROM Manager's way of flashing recovery is broken by design. Do NOT use it unless you are comfortable with rescuing your phone via ADB/fastboot like many people before.
Click to collapse
Yes, ROM Manager is completely broken in this regard. It needs to download a signed ZIP and discard it and report an error when verification fails. Heck, ZIP format has even its own CRC check. What ROM Manager is doing (download whatever .IMG and flash it no matter what) is a nice WTF! Broken by design, go rewrite from scratch!
Click to collapse
I don't trust the use of ROM Manager anymore on my device, and I'm not comfortable with using it again. I actually wonder: When I press VolumeUp-Home-Power, the phone perform a factory reset (Many people asked already why. This apparently mean that CWM is not installed).
But is it really installed? ROM Manager actually says: "Actual Recovery: ClockworkMod Recover 5.0.2.0". What? Am I supposed to press VolumeUp-Home-Power to verify, only to do another factory reset?
So what would the non-ROM-Manager method be ? I found this one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146566
I know about the Android Terminal Emulator already, and as a Linux user on PC, the commands "su", "cat", "chmod", "mount" are not unknow to me. I should be able to do this... That's not risky ?
So when CWM will be installed, I should be able to boot in it using "VolumeUp-Home-Power"; in theory, this is a bootloader, so if the ROM get screwed up, I *should* be able to access the bootloader to restore the ROM (I compare this to a PC BIOS - the OS is screwed, but BIOS remain accesible) ?
How could I explain that when I bricked my device with ROM Manager, I couldn't perform a factory reset, and only had access to Emergency Mode (I assume there is not such thing as a "Recovery Mode" on a P500h stock, new/untouched. The equivalent immediatly perform a factory reset) ?
All Android devices have a recovery partition. This is essentially a section of the device’s memory devoted to a very basic recovery system that is separate from the normal operating system. This is normally used by manufacturers for recovering a broken device (as even if the operating system crashes, the recovery image has a chance of still being access and used to reflash the operating system, etc.).
Click to collapse
By default, the LG P500h recovery partition perform an immediate factory reset - CWM will be installed here, so I should be able to access it if the ROM freak out. But why couldn't I access the factory reset, when I bricked the device? That's what I wonder.
4. Access CWM and do a Nandroid Backup to SD Card
I will now have the files boot, cache, data, recovery and system, as well as"nandroid.md5" on SD card.
5. Wipe everything, clean SD Card
Perform "Wipe data/factory reset". This will format the /data, /cache, /sdext, and .android_secure
Select the "Advanced" option and on the next screen select "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Confirm the wipe.
Not necessary but I do it anyway, in the "Advanced" screen select "Wipe battery stats" and the confirm that wipe
For a clean installation I recommend formatting the system partition too. From CWM home screen select "mounts and storage". On the next screen select "format /system" and then confirm the format.
Press the back button until you are back in the CWM home screen. Select "Install zip from sdcard" and then select "Choose zip from sdcard". Browse your sdcard for the ROM to install and select it. Confirm the installation. Now wait for the install to finish.
Go back to CWM's home screen. Select "reboot system now" option and let the device boot. The initial boot will take a couple of minutes. Don't panic.

6. Partition SD card (?)
Is this at that point that I should do it, in CWM ? Or wait until I access Cyanogenmod and use a software on PC to partition ?
Assuming I don't partition, I guess I definitely will lack space for applications (Due to the space of Android 4.0) ?
I will do "Partition SD Card>EXT4 1024MB>Swap:64MB. Is this correct?
7. Install Cyanogenmod
Install ZIP from SD Card, choose the CM ZIP;
8. Install Google Apps
Once the install is done, I won't reboot and immediately install Google Apps, with "Install ZIP from SD card". I chose this package (Working on JellyBean):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1917411
Then I should reboot in CyanogenMod and finally install Link2SD, I believe.
***
..Did I forgot anything ?
I *believe* that makes sense, but this is my first time installing a ROM - I doesn't look *that* hard, I did researches, but things can go wrong... :/
What should I do if I screw things up? Use KDZ Updater again ?
I'm still a little worried about that baseband thing, and the lost network connection.
Thanks for the input, cheers!

1) I've checked FlashImage GUI, it look really simple to use. This is what I see now:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67605655/snap20140216_103936.png
For flashing a recovery image, should I select Clear Dalvik & Clear Cache ? Do I have to enable USB Debugging?
Where can I find the recovery image for CWM ? Here maybe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523050
I don't know, I would download CWM v5.0.2.7_Touch_p500-Build 4.zip.
Would the terminal emulator method would be easier (I still need to find recovery.img)?
Code:
$ su
# mount -o remount rw /system
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/xbin/flash_image
# chmod 755 /system/xbin/flash_image
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
# mount -o remount ro /system
# reboot recovery
Since I have no Nandroid backup (I cannot do it until CWM is installed), what could I do if something goes wrong ?
2-3) Excellent, thank you.
4) I plan on partitionning, but at which point shoud I preferably do it?
Thank you, I appreciate the help - sorry for all the newbie questions.

Ok, so I've downloaded ClockworkMod_5.0.2.0_Recovery_ThunderG_Official here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523050
Extracted the ZIP and put the file recovery.img at the root of the SD Card (USB storage); so now all I have to do would be to start FlashImage GUI, select "Recovery Image", browse and choose the file recovery.img, then flash (I won't select Clear Dalvik & Clear Cache unless I have to (It's not selected by default, so I assume it's not require - although I've backed up my stuff already).
It's that simple?
I'm still in a learning stage, I bricked the device once with ROM Manager, so if that work, I should be more confident for the rest (I will take a Nandroid backup). Thanks for all the great explanations - Will press the thanks button soon

Allright, I got it!
I saw the success message, then used the keys to reboot in recovery, that worked!
At the boot, I can read "ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 E: Bad boot message "recovery ".
I believe the "E: Bad boot message "recovery " is a known issue, and but is not a problem - please let me know if I have to do anything about this.
So now I will compact the Cyanogenmod ROM (I don't know how much space I should free, but I'll try to free a decent ammount), and perform a Nandroid backup to SD card.
I believe the hardest/scariest is done. From now, if the ROM install fail, I could just restore the backup, I guess.
Are they any case when CWM is unaccessible (When I bricked my device, I had no access to stock recovery (which only perform factory reset) but just Emergency Mode. Why was that?) ?
Thank you, I will let you know about the rest.
(Will press the thanks button at the end I don't know if it's OK to thanks on multiple posts on one thread, on this forum)
EDIT:
That error message means you dont have SD-ext. Ignore it.

EDIT 2: Nandroid backup succesfully taken! I now have the files .android_secure.vfat.tar, boot.img, cache.yaffs2.img, data.yaffs2.img, nandroid.md5, recovery.img and system.yaffs2.img. Will backup these on my PC.
It's OK to thanks on multiple post. You just have a limit of 8 thanks per day.
ROM manager made anything inaccessible except emergency mode or fast boot mode for some people.
(When I flashed my Oone with CWM, ROM manager worked like a charm)
You can flash the ROM now

I appreciate the information;
It's quite akwards that ROM Manager broke everything (And I asked for a BACKUP - that's so broken, it brick the device when you want to BACKUP <__<) - when it rebooted, it was in Fastboot mode, and I never saw that mode before. Tried a few recommended commands without problems, but when I rebooted, I only had access to Emergency Mode.
What would be informative for me to know, is that ROM Manager seems to not only have screwed the ROM, but the stock bootloader as well. Weird.
Shinobisoft said we need to compact the CM10 ROM with his utility first, because the System partition is too small (Otherwise, I will have no network). I will do that, I have the tool, that doesn't look complicated.
From now, I am backing up my SD Card content (DATA is backed up too) with Nandroid present on SD, so I could start formatting, immediately followed by SD partitioning.
I guess I should be fine at that point - if anything goes wrong, I should have the option to restore the Nandroid backup.
Will let you know when I'll have the ROM compacted (Probably today).
EDIT: YAY !
Everything worked as we expected! I saved my SD Card on my computer, wiped it, partition it from CWM (EXT: 1024MB, SWAP: 64MB. I have a 16 Micro SD, class 4 (Can't afford higher class much, for now), then installed the compacted ROM. Immediately after, I installed Gapps, then rebooted.
That worked !! This ROM is DOPE ! Totally worth upgrading ! Blazing fast !! (Will be slower with apps installed, but well)
I also have a working network!
There is one thing that "failed", I cannot get Link2SD to work. It always says "cannot create mount script". I checked with Windows (I know by experience that I should absolutely not edit Unix partitions in Windows, I just check), and the FAT32 partition is the first, then I have a EXT4 partition, then the Linux-Swap, I don't know why it doesn't work.
I used Gparted to format the EXT4 partition to EXT2, but same problem, "cannot create mount script". What am I supposed to do ?
Thanks youuu !! =D
I'm really happy to have done this on my own, with help - I now have more experience with Android, I have experience with Windows, Linux OS and OS X, but never did I tried flashing a ROM yet.

How much free space is there on your /system partition ?
Link2SD should be working.

Hi,
Tanks for replying. out of 200mb, I have 70Mb free, but on /data. Last time i checked, /system was almost full (where can i check system size?).
Seems like lot of people have this link2sd issue.
@GameX2 use root explorer, it will tell you the remaining system space
@xu3sno or @ibub can you please help me ?

That's what I've thought, according to "Storage Analyzer", /sysem has as minimum free space of 84KB (!) and a maximum of 4.63 MB.
Did not experience any weird stuff, for now.
sd-ext folder doest exist at root, but it's empty.

Link2SD needs at least a MB to create mount scripts.
Delete some system apps like TerminalEmulator, CM File manager, Email, Exchange services.
Also use mini LatinIME.

Yes, that's right. You can check /system space by using Root Explorer. Or go to
Settings>About phone>Partition info.
I got 10+MB space left on /system partiton after trimmed the ROM and installed mini gapps.
You're right, Link2SD only works if there is 3MB, at least, left in system partition.

Once you have success with link2sd creating mount scripts, you can access at /data/sdext. Been a long time since I ran Jan 8 cm-10, but I seem to recall that partition info is not in settings/about phone. But link2sd will have it. Or there are other apps. When viewing storage info from settings menu, don't confuse internal memory with /system (190mb). Internal that is shown there is/data (200mb).

How Do I Install?

Code:
$ su
# mount -o remount rw /system
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/xbin/flash_image
# chmod 755 /system/xbin/flash_image
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
# mount -o remount ro /system
# reboot recovery
Since I have no Nandroid backup (I cannot do it until CWM is installed), what could I do if something goes wrong ?
2-3) Excellent, thank you.
4) I plan on partitionning, but at which point shoud I preferably do it?
Thank you, I appreciate the help - sorry for all the newbie questions.

Install some file manager from play store. In phone settings (not file manager) choose security. Then choose to allow installation from unknown sources. Then open your file manager, scroll to sdcard/downloads/ ,and click on flashimage GUI.apk. Installation process will start.

[HELP]Rooting+CWM Recovery+CM11 flashing

Hey guys.
My final goal is to get Cyanogenmod11 on my Atrix 2.
I know there are 3 stages to do this.
Atrix 2 Specs:
Official ICS 4.0.4
Unrooted
What I am planning to do:
1. ROOT using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742879
2. Clockwordmod Recovery using http://theunlockr.com/2012/11/14/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-motorola-atrix-2/ (Atrix2Bootstrap.apk), because Boot Menu Manager is so confusing, and I'm not used to partitions.
3. Flash a CM11 ROM with proper gapps (need help).
Where I need help:
1. I want to know if the rooting method and the CWM method will work.
2. I can't find any proper CM11 ROM+GApps where people have commented "success!"
3. All the tutorials I find just say use BMM. I want to use CWM, how do I go about flashing a ROM with CWM (Bootstrap) on Atrix 2? Can I get some steps for this?
4. My motorola drivers are from https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481 , if that's right.
I'm requesting the amazing xda-devs team for help.. thanks in advance.
Same confusion for me :/ which method to follow :/
1. You posted this on the wrong section.
2. Rooting method will work. But will not. Why? You'll find out momentarily.
3. I think in every thread, including cm has gapps' link. Any gapps will do fine. Unless that is specified by the dev.
3. Here's the answer. All roms here only use BMM to flash. No other. There's a reason why the tutorials say BMM. Fyi, BMM is cwm based.
4. Head over to general section. There you will find a tutorial how to set BMM up.
5. If this is so hard for you, the most preliminary step is a must for you. Snoop around and read.

BMM is not that hard to use as it look !!
Even I also got confused for very first time after watching the video, but dont worry you can do it it not that difficult
Just root your phone by any method then
install BMM from play store -->> open it -->> give root access to it -->> let it do its work -->> i dont remember but may be it will restart phone, if not then restart your phone (after its work is finished) -->> on restart -->> you will see motorola logo and after that android logo (green) -->> click on it -->> then follow the BMM vdo tutorial
(I am kinda lazy about writing all steps )
PM me or any member we will help you if you stuck anywhere..... but you have to watch the complete vdo and try to understand it first

Yeah, kinda sorry about the wrong section thing, I guess I should've posted it in the help section. Btw what do you mean when you say the rooting method will not work? And what I mean by the cm11 threads is that they provide non working gapps where many users have complained of an error "installation aborted".. Thanks though.

Thanks a lot man, I appreciate this. But my main worry was the partitions. Its extremely complicating, and I thought clockwork mod recovery aka bootstrap was a better and easier option.

Opps. My bad. The rooting method will work. But CWM will not. Because if you want to flash kk rom, you'll need BMM. I'm pretty sure altered stated that, any gapps will do fine. But preferably pa gapps. But if you want it running on main system, you need other gapps. As pa minimal gapps too big for our data partition. So there it is. Fail to install. As for allocating partition for other system, it's pretty simple and easy actually. I'll leave sameer or other member to answer.

I can rephrase my queries.
What I'm having issues with is:
I don't want to have multi boot or partitions, installing CM11 as the default boot is preferable.
It would be cool if I could get quick help on installing BMM, it's very confusing.
Also, flashing the ROM with BMM is also very confusing.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Rooted phone.

Reboot the phone. After the Motorola logo you'll see an green android with spinning gears. Within 3 seconds tap on the android. Then select "recovery". Go to "wipe and clean" and do a factory reset. Go back and select "install zip package", then "install zip from storage". Choose the file from your SD card using the volume keys to navigate and power to select. Install gapps the same way then reboot. Done.

Ok...i will try to keep it as simple as i can
1) It would be cool if I could get quick help on installing BMM, it's very confusing.
Ans :
Please , i say please if u want to go somewhere with your A2 , u hav to start loving BMM and love it truely madly deeply because without it A2 wouldnt get any of the goodies it has.The video is confusing i agree..i didnt do it when the video was out...Its fairly simple you know...here i list the easy steps..follow them 1 by 1 and do it simultaneously with your device....it wont be difficult...
You can find the complete instructions in the quote below :
>Download and install BMM from google play https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...otmenu.manager
>Our phone does not have a partition for internal storage.. so we use the data partition for it.. To do so, just open a root browser like root explorer and navigate to /etc/bmm/conf
>Open "recovery.fstab" with a text editor
The last line will be something like this
/int vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p25
Just change 'vfat' to 'auto' and 'mmcblk1p25' to 'userdata' (its the same though..)
So that it looks like this
/int auto /dev/block/userdata
and of course save it and close it..
Done.. you are good to go..
YOU HAVE BEEN INFORMED.
2) I don't want to have multi boot or partitions, installing CM11 as the default boot is preferable.
Ans :You dont need to multi boot mandatorily. You can flash any ROM of your choice on system 1. That will be the only single ROM you have on your device...
Again..really sorry..BMM is the way...You hav to learn to love it....and it will love your phone back
3) Also, flashing the ROM with BMM is also very confusing.
Ans : After you install and go through the UI once. I bet it will be the simplest thing you ever used..Even more simple than the FB app u regularly use :silly::silly:
Thanks to both of you guys
