Wifi MMS - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I recently unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. I haven't flashed any roms so it's still stock. I noticed this morning that I was unable to send an MMS thru wifi. I turned off Wifi and it went thru fine with on the LTE network. Is there anything specific I should be looking for or is this possibly just a glitch at the time?

MMS will not be transmitted through WiFi, but it also is not supposed to "block" the MMS. But I've read of instances on various devices where having WiFi on will interfere with MMS going through, and turning it off lets the MMS send. Not sure if there is a fix.

Is this the one x one of these devices. O don't send a ton of pics and never noticed this before. Shouldn't the phone automatically switch over to the network in these cases?

Its supposed to switch over to network data stock or not MMS WILL always go through network data regardless of WiFi being on or off. In my case I have my WiFi on 99.9% of the time, I keep it on while at home and all my MMS goes through all the time I'm not on a stock ROM but I've never had a problem with that either while stock. Nothing has changed for me , on att.

"Supposed to switch over" is the critical phrase here. That is the problem, the switching is not happening as they were supposed to.
I've never had any problems with WiFi blocking MMS either, nor will the vast majority of people. But there does seem to be a bug, where a small minority of people have a problem with the data not switching over properly. I've seen at least several people (this device and others) post here and/or on AT&T forums with this bug (MMS won't go through when connected to WiFi, but goes through immediately once WiFi is turned off). Its annoying I'm sure, and I don't think I ever saw a satisfactory fix for this.
It sounds like the issue for the OP has only cropped up since unlocking the bootloader? It seems suspicious, but I can't think of how unlocking the BL would affect MMS in this way.

Some of the folks that replied to this thread seem to have a similar issue with the One X (MMS not going through unless WiFi is shutoff): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641377

[Q] Network Dropping

I just want to check in and see if any other Inspire owners are having this issue:
I have noticed that my phone occasionally drops the network connection and doesn't get it back right away. There are two different flavors of this issue that I have experienced:
1) I was walking my dogs today and the phone suddenly dropped it's connection to AT&T completely. After a few seconds, it reconnected and everything was fine. I was in an area with good coverage and the status bar showed no connection at all.
2) When home, I leave the Wifi on. Earlier today, when I tried to make a call, it simply wouldn't dial out. Then I tried to open a web page and nothing (after turning wifi off). I had to switch airplane mode on and back off to reset the connection. I also received several text messages at once, all of which had been sent hours before (as indicated by the time stamp on the message). It's almost like the phone has an issue swapping back and forth between the carrier connection and the wifi.
Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?
As an update, I noticed that when the wifi is on, there's a check mark under the H+ symbol (rather than the up/down arrows) and when I switch off Wifi, it doesn't go away. During this time, I have no cellular data. Switching airplane mode off and on doesn't seem to work. Sometimes it recovers on its own. Other times, I have to turn the wifi off and on several times.
This is annoying. It seems to be having issues doing the hand-off between Wifi and cellular data. This is really the only issue I have with the phone. Hope they roll out a fix soon.
I had the same problem. I thought it was because I had to add my own APN. (I could not switch my plan around because it was a work SIM). This caused SMS messages to not go out and an overall bad network experience on the phone. I have since returned the phone because I need a reliable network connection and the ability to send/receive SMS messages at all times. Once a fix is found I will be back. I liked the phone alot otherwise.
Are you by any chance using the SIM from another phone? I had the exact same issue yesterday and data did not work for me until I called AT&T and had them update IMEI number from Captivate to Inspire. Hope that helps.

Nope. I made it a point to have them activate it in the AT&T store with a new sim because I had read about people having issues when they transfer their SIM. I also had and iPhone 4 previously, so transferring wasn't really an option. I'm definitely on the right data plan, too.
I left the wifi off all night and it did it to me again today. The check mark shows up under the H and it loses all data connectivity. I'm not sure what is causing this, but I'd love to know if there's some kind of workaround. I have messed with a few options (like the data always on option) and haven't had any luck.

I was using a SIM from another phone. It is the SIM card from my Work phone and I can not change the plan. It does have unlimited text and internet I just cant change it to a 4G plan. I had added the APN that is floating around here and that worked except I was having the same problem as the OP.

Like I said, my issue was very much like yours and OP's and adding cutom APN made no difference until I called AT&T and had them update IMEI on my account. Presto, all problems went away instantly. I understand that it's not an option for you, sorry

Just did this. Thought it might have resolved it at first, but it didn't. Basically, when I put the phone down for a while, it's like the data connection goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. When I turn the screen on, there's no mobile data. Sometimes, the dual arrows are visible under the "H", but only the up arrow is lit. Other times, the check mark (meaning no data) shows up under th "H" and stays there. Switching Airplane mode off and on will reset the connection.
I hate to say it, but the phone may have to go back. I love everything else about the phone, but this bug is too major to wait for an update or fix. What good is smartphone that doesn't get data reliably?
are you running the stock rom? i haven't been using that rom much so it may behave differently than the custom roms.
i don't think its a common bug. i would see if you can get a replacement phone.

Definitely stock rom. No rooting or anything. I didn't notice this on the first day I had the phone because it was on Wifi almost all the time. I turned wifi off to test it and the issue persists. I suppose I should try resetting the phone first, though I'm not looking forward to setting it back up again. After that, I'll take it into AT&T. I'd love to keep the phone. Can't believe no one else is having this issue.

yeah, resetting it up is a pain. sorry, and i hope you get it fixed.
Just to say it again. I had the exact same problem as the OP. Maybe we both had a flaky phone?
Okay, turns out there's an issue with the AT&T tower closest to my house. I found out from a rep at AT&T. I haven't left home much at all this weekend, so I had no standard for comparison. I just verified it by turning the wifi off on my iPad and using 3G data. It has the same issue.
Of course, I had already done a factory reset and gone to the AT&T device support center, but at least my phone is fine.
As a side note: I love that Android restores your apps now. I always thought WebOS was awesome for doing that and that was what frustrated me most about Android, with as often as I swap phones.
Wow... Wish this was my problem. I switched back to my Palm Pre+ and my data works fine.

Cellular Data stops working after airplane mode or in\out of coverage return

Replicated this on 2 different Infuse 4G using 2 different SIM cards.
I notice that about 50% of the time when I come out of airplane mode, the data connectivity on the phone is gone. The only way I've been able to figure out how to restore it is to go into APN, open the apn settings page, then press save, and that seems to restore it.. yeah, annoying a little? hehe
The other time I notice it, while less frequently, is when I am out of coverage, ie an elevator or sub-teranian environment (hehe, I like that word better than basement), and then I return to coverage. turning airplane mode on then off doesn't restore it like many issues, nor does a complete reboot of the phone, so it's really strange. the only way I've been able to solve it is to go in and tap the apn settings then resave them, which obviously isn't the ideal way to resolve it.
Anyone else having this issue? I have replicated it on the 2 Samsung Infuse 4G devices I have, and they were both setup independently.
I flew the day after I got my Infuse and four days after I returned home on the next flight...No problems with airplane mode. Just playing around with it now, I'm still not encountering any issues.
I do have occasional issues that require me to enable/disable Wi-Fi...it'll only hop wi-fi spots once or twice, then I have to enable/disable wifi to get it to hop on a new one. Won't scan properly.

Are you AT&T? I'm wondering if it's something AT&T is doing to the phone then. I'm using an MVNO of ATT's sim card, so the apn that was on the phone originally was deleted and I replaced it with the new APN info.
Yes, I'm on AT&T directly (using an ancient Cingular 3G SIM)... obviously, I didn't have to change any of the APN info as a result.

I just tried my Tru Mobile (It's a global roaming voice\data sim). I changed the APN and it's doing the same thing. Bugger.
Would AT&T really script the phone to try and hassle someone for using another sim in the phone? Weird. Hopefully when a flashable ROM comes out it'll solve this issue as I never had it when using CM7 on my Inspire 4G, nor Aria, nor Captivate.

HAHA, that's funny. I always forget it's AT&T we're talking about.
I know this is an old thread, bu this happens to me too. I'm running Infused 1.6 and the same thing happens to me. Into and out of airplane mode I can receive but not send text messages. Or if I travel through an area where there is no connectivity then I receive but can't send text messages.
My fix is to restore the backup data for "[SMS/MMS Prefs Messaging 2.2.1]" using Titanium Backup.
Seems more like an issue with your sim cards than the phone.

MMS over WiFi?

I'm wondering if this is a problem across the board. Lately in have been running a few different ROMs. Hyperdrive, moar and the most recent moar 5.0.1. I have noticed that my MMS won't go through while I am on WiFi. I don't know if this has been a problem for a while and I haven't noticed it. I really like the app textra, and unjust started using it the other day. I thought that was the issue. Uninstalled it and I am still having the problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I always thought it was a network thing. I thought they required you to send and receive MMS through the cell towers because they're stored at Verizon servers before being passed along to the recipient. I had the same issue on my LG Ally, haven't tried MMS over WiFi on my gs3, but now I'm curious.

No, I'm not using a network extender. Interesting thing tho. MMS will not go thru at all on MOAR or Hyperdrive. I flashed bonestock 3.1 and when I send an MMS over wifi, the 4G turns on (so now the wifi icon and 4G are on) and it will send the MMS.......hmmmmmm
MMS / SMS are both sent over data networks, as this is the only way VZW can count how many you send, thus being able to bill those who do not have unlimited text messages. (this came from a VZW rep when i called in to get a work order on my phone, as mine wouldn't work)
When the S3 first came out, there was an issue with the devices as a whole, fully stock and unrooted, having problems sending text messages when the phone was on WIFI. The process is, when you hit send, it will shut off your WIFI, switch to data, send message, and then switch back to WIFI without you noticing it.
however, in the beginning, there was an issue with the phone doing this. AND this was even before rooting the phone. VZW and Samsung had to do a fix for their radios to get the phone to work correctly.
so what you are probably seeing, is an issue with that switching, not that the message won't go over WIFI, cuz unless these DEVs have figured out how to make messages go over internet instead of data network, then the issue is a ROM issue with the switch.
hope that makes sense...

Unfortunately, this is the answer that is most often given, but not very helpful (no offense). I think the majority of people with the issue at this point understand that MMS is sent via data networks by design, the problem is, it is not functioning properly. It is NOT shutting off the WiFi, therefore it is not sending at all. I've had different periods of success, where it'll work for a week, then back to the same ****. I've never rooted my phone, so it's a stock ROM issue that still remains.
always had issues sending MMS messages on roms other than stock when I was at home with my network extender...I kept messing with the APN settings last night... I changed the other thing to GSM and tried to connect to at & t towers.. after it failed only then it would have multiple choices of APN settings ..I have all the roaming options checked and the LTE/CDMA is checked...I've been able to send MMS messages with no problem now.

MMS issue..last try for help for an FXZ...

Edit: that should be need aome help BEFORE an FXZ...
I've mentioned this in a few threads and nobody else seems to have the same problem...
Ever since rooting and updating to 4.4 I have not been able to send an MMS with WiFi enabled...the phone will not kick over to 4g to send the message...
- If I turn WiFi off they send fine
- I can receive them fine with WiFi on or off no problem...
I have not don't a factory reset, but this seems like it would be a system issue which a factory reset won't help...I don't want to FXZ because I'll lose root...but its becoming annoying to deal with...
So hopefully SOMEONE can help me lol

I have two suggestions. Try switching from Global to LTE/CDMA. If that doesn't work try to send one with your ad blocker disabled, assuming you use one. Seems strange but some people on Verizon forums say it solved the same issue you describe on the S4.
Also wondering if you use the LTE OnOff app and set it to CDMA (auto) if it would send. Maybe you have low 4G signal at home? I have low signal at my home but my phone always finds the 4G signal. However it's rare I can get any data from it. I get better reception with 3G. I know you said it sends fine over 4G with wifi off but might be worth experimenting with.

Verizon 4G Handoff Fix

I was asked to also post this fix that I came up with in the general forum from the CleanROM thead, as it should help people having the same issue. The issue isn't actually related to that ROM but a broader M8 issue that I was unaware of and thought was specific to the ROM. It's been confirmed with multiple users having the issue that the fix below does indeed fix the random data issues that require a reboot/airplane mode toggle to resolve.
A fix for the 4G --> 3G, WiFi --> 4G, WiFi --> 3G, and 1X/3G --> 4G handoff issues that some people may be having is outlined below...
In a nutshell, we just need to change EVDO Rev A to "Enabled" instead of the 3rd "eHRPD" option in EPST.
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> Enable --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Might cause a reset data connection with the transition due to a possible new IP or hamper simultaneous voice and data over 3G (which is possible), but it will allow the phone to establish a data connection on its own again and not get stuck on eHRPD 's random buggyness. Should transition back to 4G eventually as well
eHRPD basically for allows switching between LTE and EVDO systems seamlessly (no reset data connection from 4G --> 3G and back, slightly faster speeds, same IP, depends on tower...)
Changing this setting basically tells the modem in your phone to act more like a 3G phone when requesting 3G data access. Bypasses the hybrid-ness and just forces you on the legacy EVDO Rev A. network.
If the phone signal (4G is weak) at the time of the eHRPD transition, it can mess up. This change tells it to not bother with that and when the 4G signal isn't available just revert completely to 3G to register and not wait up for transition info. Makes it more cut and dry, and to be honest it does not really impact things. When the phone detects a 4G solid signal again it will switch back on all its own.
Same issue happened on the HTC Thunderbolt when Verizon was messing with things during initial 4G deployment. Only recent changes are the whole VoLTE ramp up, and that could be the cause of this recent crazyness.
To revert this change:
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> eHRPD --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Thank you for sharing this! Very good find and positive feedback has been showing in response. Worth a try for everyone having these symptoms.

Isn't Android Revolution HD is in the Generic HTC One M8 section?
Sadly, this only works with VZW based ROMs. Anything with parts taken from other bases, or a GPE ROM it may not work and the code for EPST might be different/EPST might not work and/or the option may not be there.

Sounds like you guys need to flash CleanROM...
After making a Nandroid back up of your current system then do the edit and restore Nandroid if you want
But to answer the OP, yes. GSM ROMS will not have this option unless the Dev adds it in. Otherwise its a CDMA only function (I believe).

It works on my viperone 1.8, are you on the newer versions that you do not have the new verizon firmware for yet ?
This is great, I come from an HTC One S but also switched between that and a Galaxy Nexus so I could tell a difference in the way my signal acted and we have had signal issues with the HTC One S for quite some time now and it all seemed to stem from when we finally obtained s-off, seemed our One S was never the same, may have been placebo but I was worried it was happening all over again with our blessed M8 lol. The One S was not Verizon and may not be the same issue. I just tried this and it already seems better. Thanks very much. They still have not found a fix for the HTC One S

If you go back to 1.8 then it will probably work for you, 1.8 was the last verizon that worked correctly for your verizon firmware. I was on the 2.3 but had too many wifi issues so I went back to 1.8, which is less wifi issues now with this fix I seem to not have any wifi issues so far so think its working for me. I"am not going to update viperone until the new verizon firmware is out in a zip to flash in recovery, because the wifi issues are not worth it to update now.
Any more successful difference's people have since doing this?
I was listening to a radio show streaming app today on Wi-Fi and the app kept stopping. every 10 minutes or so after trying this fix. It was the first time I listened to this app with this phone but listen to this app all the time with my other phones and never have this issue. It was consistently dropping Wi-Fi and 4g wasn't picking it up. I am running CleanRom with Harmon Kardon. I tried disabling Harmon Kardon to see if that may have been the issue since I am not accustomed to using it yet and it seemed to work better without it but still dropping signal. The signal icons seemed uneffected. I guess I am going to remove Harmon Kardon see if that makes a difference before I revert back from this fix.
I did this and my phone now reverts back to LTE and doesn't get stuck on 3G like it had been doing since day 1. I was getting tired of cycling into and out of airplane mode. Thanks for this advice/fix!
Is this the bug I experience where I have 4G signal, but am "offline"?
If so, that has been driving me nuts. I am on the stock ROM, S-OFF Rooted. Is this present with the off the shelf version?
Reporting back after 3 separate complete wipe/reflash/restores on my M8. Here is my status as of now:
Tuesday: Tried flashing stock recovery and did factory reset. (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Wednesday: Tried flashing RUU then returning back to CleanRom 1.4 (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Thursday: tried the EHRPD fix listed below. So far today NO handoff issues! I don't want to jump the gun, but this appears to have done the trick. I have gone from 1x to 3G to 4G with no issues so far.

If anyone is using the Verizon M8 with a GSM sim and can't access the USSD code ##778# then go into settings -> mobile data -> preferred network -> LTE/CDMA and try running the code again in the dialer. Dont forget to change the preferred network back to Global after applying the fix by the OP.
This has worked great for me. Thanks for posting. Was incredibly frustrating to have to fight with the phone every morning on my way to work to get it to connect to 4g. I had to toggle airplane mode, switch preferred networks and even reboot or some times do all of the above - lol. Thanks again.
Apparently this is a known issue and per Verizon, they're working with HTC to fix it. But I've also read that the problem could be cause by running xposed modules which seemed to be the case with me. I'm s-off running stock and was fine until I installed xposed.

This fix does not impact Wi-Fi directly, just eHRPD for mobile data transitions. Sounds like the app is the problem. Have the same ROM with Harmon Larson installed - no issues.

Is this the bug I experience where I have 4G signal, but am "offline"?
If so, that has been driving me nuts. I am on the stock ROM, S-OFF Rooted. Is this present with the off the shelf version?

Yup. Seems to be impacting certain phones regardless of ROM. I'd give it a shot and see if it helps. If not just change it back.
Big thanks to the OP. I've been dealing with the the eHRPD limbo since I got my phone in April. I live in a low 4g area and was experiencing text and mms problems big time. It was always happening when it was bouncing for 3g and 4g. When I would check the network details it would say eHRPD. I would constantly toggle airplane mode off and on and change network preferences to get it to work. Really annoying. Well I tried this last night and the signal is staying in 4g almost all the time and I have experienced no problems with messaging. I am running Viper 1.8 and had to kind of guess to find the edit button after entering the numbers in the dialer, for some reason the Edit button did not show up but it was there when tapped on it. After that it was easy. Thanks again for the help. I wish Verizon was as good.
