[Q] Handscent, GO SMS, Chomp...seem to make phone lag - Optimus One, P500, V Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not really sure where to post this question but I think this is likely the best place. I've installed many custom ROMs but always seem to have a problem in terms of performance when I use any of the ICS/JB ROMs. I'm 99% sure the issues have to do with running non-stock SMS apps such as Handscent, GO SMS, Chomp... When I use my P500 without a non-stock SMS app installed, it works really well. When I install a non-stock SMS, I notice very significant lag no matter what I'm trying to do. It does not seem to be as much of an issue when running a GB ROM.
Now, the obvious solution is to simply go with the stock SMS app. However, there are so many benefits to using the non-stock apps that I can't seem to live without using one of them. The other solution would be to stick with a GB ROM - but even there I do experience some lag.
Any ideas as to why a non-stock SMS app would cause issues? Any other ideas in terms of possible workarounds...
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Remove stock messaging app? Replace with Handcent or Vanilla?

I have Handcent installed... I like it a bit better because it doesn't chug like the default SMS app we have installed, not to mention I have some people blacklisted that I don't want showing up. How can I remove the stock SMS program while only keeping Handcent? Also, if someone could post a backup of the default SMS apk that would be great.
Could we even install just the stock android apk in lieu of what we go preinstalled with our phone? I'm really sick of the chugging some apps experience on this phone. It really shows a lack of care when making the applications.
I am no expert here, but I believe removing the HTC messaging app will cause problems. The OS tries to call it into memory when the phone boots, so if you remove it, Sense will keep calling it in a loop, and run your battery down. It might be possible to replace it with the vanilla android SMS app, but I think you might need to get in and tinker with the ROM to correct for differences between them(name, location, services etc.).
Your safest bet is going to be to wait until a ROM you like comes around and flash it. You should be able to install and use whichever messaging app you wish if the ROM is cooked well.
Does anyone have the stock SMS app from android? Non HTC?

[Q] Question about texting w/ Custom ROM's

So I have the Android Revolution HD 3.0.3 ROM flashed to my phone and I noticed that when I use the swype feature during texting it will suggest some of the stupidest words that I'm not even close to using. Is the list of words different because it's not a TMOUS ROM? How can I fix it. I find myself having to type text in landscape because swyping is useless. Thanks!
Your issue is with Swype itself, not the rom. I'm using Swype beta now and it seems to be pretty accurate for me. You can go into settings, keyboards, Swype settings, and then move the slider over to prefer accuracy over speed. It has made a dramatic difference for me. Should work for you also.
If you are referring to the trace feature and not the actual swype keyboard app, then yes the correction/suggestions will be affected by the rom.
I should have been more accurate and saying its the trace feature not swype itself. How do I alter the suggestions of my trace feature? I flashed a TMOUS ROM and its a lot better.

Though I am not sure, I would assume the preset dictionary would be in the lib file associated with the keyboard apk. I would post the question in the arhd thread or just swap it out and see what happens. Mike is really good about answering questions.
I have a really weird problem, I think it is due to the custom rom that I installed in it?
I have a problem with sending messages (sms) to all of my contacts, it lists the problem as 'message sending failed after several attempts'. I tried using GO SMS but to no avail. I have tried to select another service provider and select my service provider again, but nothing changes. I have checked the service number with service provider and it is correct, and when i try texting on another phone, it seems to work.
I have tried several insertcoin roms, and they all don't seem to work for me. Everything else is fine, recieving texts, calling, internet browsing, etc etc. Everything is fine except sending messages, which is kind of annoying.
Using Insertcoin Sense Android 2.3.4 Stable 2.5.5.
Any help on this would be great!!!

[Q] A 'non phone' ROM?

Evening folks, as phones such as my trusty HTC Sensation come to the end of their useful lives, to be replaced by other newer phones, I was wondering if there was such a thing as a 'non phone' ROM I could flash which would remove the calling, texting etc functions and allow it to be used as a 'ipod touch' (for want of a better description). I would be quite happy putting a dummy SIM card into the phone and simply not allowing it to touch the network but I would be happier with the calling etc functions removed from the phone, especially as I'm hoping to give it to my kids to play with.
Any advice? Does such a thing exist? I had a quick google and couldnt really see anything too relevant. Happy to be corrected on that though!
Haven't seen a ROM like that here..
I'm not sure why you want those features removed, but if you want that your kids don't use them, you can set up a password lock on those apps.
I don't think there's any such ROM. But why you insisting on no network feature. Just don't insert the SIM and it will work.

Oh, I know I could stop it like that but just was wondering if there was a 'lighter' ROM without the phone aspects.

Or then maybe Link2SD can freeze the apps, so they won't be shown in appdrawer.

You can remove those by using certain apps that can do it. I think titanium backup has this functionality. However, as these apps are not heavy, simply hiding them will do the work.
Edit: Just remembered, on most ROMs. the phone and messaging apps have other apps that depend on them, so removing them completely might cause issues. Hiding them from the drawer (possible on many AOSP based launchers and some Sense ROMs built-in) would be the simplest way to "remove" the apps.

Thanks for that, I'll go ahead and hide them. Appreciate the info folks, many thanks.

Custom Roms vs Stock Rom - WhatsApp

this may have been addressed before but after much testing with numerous roms, it seems as though only the stock rom works without fail on WhatsApp notifications. all the other roms tested fail to properly notify by audio or visual unless the app is opened. the stock rom instantly notifies, regardless if the app is open or closed. has anyone else noticed this? does anyone else care? lol this is not a rant, just an observation. i use whatsapp for work as well as personal so notifications are rather important. i guess it's back to stock/rooted until something changes...
This deserved a thread? It is a well known issue if you look through the various custom ROM's.

What is the best, most stable, current rom?

Hey yall, been out the game for a little while.... just wondering what everyone is running as far as new roms. I always liked CM, maybe that's just cuz its the only one I really used.
I am obviously interested in KitKat roms now but I see a few different options so I was wondering what the differences were, and about stability, features, etc.
Thanks in advance!
I'm running Carbon nightly build 20140314-0511. It has more features which can't be found on CM11. Using it so far without glitches. No random reboots or freezing.

Is it a KitKat rom? What are the features that cant be found in CM?
Well I went ahead and downloaded Carbon KK and while i do like the customization there seems to be a fatal flaw with restoring messages using programs like SMS Backup & Restore. I restored 10k messages to the phone using this app and when I did that I had to change Backup & Restore to the default app and it cannot send messages. So when i switch back to Messaging to enable sending then the program crashes or doesnt show or send any messages or conversations. It says to "leave the messaging app open for a while" but this seems really silly.
I always hold onto my messages so i can reference past conversations but apparently im unable to do that on KK roms. Seems really stupid.
Use Google Voice? Archive all your messages.
*shrug*
Of course once i posted my response they all started magically working again...............................................
