So I have an Acer Iconia A500 running 4.0.3 non-rooted.
Its got to the point where I'm at my wits end and need to take action. Over the last couple months I suspect it just hadn't been running right and has been getting progressively worse. Apps FC a lot more than ever. I've installed a lot over the months so doing process of elimination by uninstalling one at a time would be a pain.
This is why I'm wondering if there's any particular apps that are known to bog the system down. Here's a screenshot of what's running/URL]per Advanced Task Killer. I've killed tasks but they obviously start right back up and really its no use - nor is the built in task killer with Astro File Manager. Also I have no idea why some of those are running as I just rebooted my device before taking that screenshot. The only thing I've physically opened was the browser and Google Play music.
Also, is there any kind of app out there that can diagnose or sniff out the problem apps or a log that will tell me what's going haywire?
Any help is appreciated, really trying to avoid wiping the device.
Android has the autostart option for apps. The apps can use the onBoot service/ after boot completed to start, this explains the started apps after the reboot.
You can use the logcat to see why there are fc's of some apps.
Not every app is without errors and warnings, it could be a developer related problem. And btw android needs no task manager/ killer.

I'm by no means a pro with this stuff but I wanted to share this for those of you having issues with your radio getting shut down after certain tasks getting closed with a task manager. Also peep, footprints and stocks constantly restarting.
I've tried a few of the task killers out there, even purchased Advanced Task Manger which is an awesome program, but regardless of exception lists with most of these programs occasionally my device would eventually force close an invisible process which made the browser unresponsive and cause other issues.
I picked up TaskPanel a couple of days ago and haven't had a single issue since. I'm chalking it up to some of the other task killers i've tried to closing some random process at some odd time (I'm not able to recreate it consistently).
TaskPanel fixed the problem I was having. It was annoying having to go into air plane mode or resetting the device to get it working again. Its been 2 days now without the issue coming back up so at a minimum it seems significantly reduced if not eliminated for me.
I also do not have peep, stocks and footprints auto loading after a close. If I open them they show up to be closed but once closed they do not automatically reopen. Display difference? Perhaps, but memory useage displayed says they are closed since if I open them it drops and returns back when closed.
My exclusion list:
Htc Sense
Htc Wagent
IQRD
OMADM
Thats it. No issues.
I too have tried all the task killer apps and have had the best luck with task pannel. I'll try adding these to my exception list and see how it goes. Thanks for the info.

IQRD is the one that kills the radio. I've got it excluded on Advanced Task Killer, and have no problems like you were reporting either.
I do, however, like the auto-end feature with TaskPanel where you can set it to do it as frequently as every five minutes, or at a threshold of available RAM. Advanced Task Killer's minimum is 30 minutes, so I think I'm going to switch to TaskPanel for a while and see how it works. Good suggestion!

It's not a solution when the solution has undesired results.
I don't like how sluggish the Hero feels like when it has 28MB of RAM free. I do, however, like it a lot better when it has 75MB free.
Others obviously feel this way too, so hence the need for a thread to discuss viable solutions.
Since you feel your solution works for you, this topic doesn't apply to your situation. I feel like you were trolling a little, so bye bye!

After rooting my phone and removing the ATT bloatware, I noticed that my Advanced Task Killer (Free) program lists more programs running in the background than before? Lots of programs that never popped up when the phone was stock now are showing up in the Task Killer program as running? Is this right? Did something screw up? If I kill all those processes the only ones that consistently comes back are HandCent SMS and Clock.
I've been noticing the default messaging app and clock open up a lot, and sometimes other apps too, like ESPN ScoreCenter, Facebook, etc. are opening up by themselves. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I've noticed that my GPS kicks on every once in awhile too randomly. Usually when I can tell something's running in the background.
If you turn off Background Data in Settings>Accounts and Sync, it stops it almost in its entirety, but you have to turn it on to access the Market. My guess is it's just the programs collecting or sending data regarding use of the program, or with the clock (and possibly other programs) updating itself.
I can see the logic in that some apps need to update, but I never saw these same apps exhibit this behavior before I rooted. ie) Apps running themselves and showing up in my Advanced Task Killer program and now I have to kill them where before I never knew they were there in the first place. No changes to my phone except root. Are these based on the General Sync Settings options like Background Data or AutoSync? I just don't like the idea of all these apps running when I never started them in the first place.
I think you just didn't see them before... rooting isnt going to make apps randomly start doing things they didnt do before.
This needs to be in the gerenral section as well.

Sorry if this post is in the wrong section. But yeah, I know those apps that are popping up now weren't there before. I'm sure I didn't miss seeing them as I have all the settings for Advanced Task Killer program set the same in terms of security levels.
Are you saying that rooting my phone made the apps show up now (as in they were just hidden to the OS/program prior to rooting)?

Well The same thing used to happen to me on my HTC desire so it must just be Android (maybe has to do with the build) or just Android in general. I would get stuff like settings and such in the task managers as well etc, exactly to what you guys are describing. They were not really used or needed programs so ending the tasks was no problem. No clue, but this is not only on this device

I have tested many many startup cleaning apps. I have wandered in the forums and external app sources but never found a true startup manager that can prevent startup of apps. I have 275 apps installed on my phone and at least 20-30 does not have option to disable themselves on startup and just run all the time and i have to kill them occasionally.
Here is what all startup cleaners do:
- you boot the phone
- clutter begins, all process of ruthless apps are started at the same time
- phone hangs for minutes (3-10)
- your startup manager was set by you to "prevent" some of them however it just loads along with them then kills the listed processes.
- some "good" programs then exit other run all the time and has to be killed once more manually even though they have no more to do!
So basically this does not speeds up the startup but prolongs it as you have one more app running that has to take care of the startup apps. This is not the right way!
Can we just have one app that can REMOVE from the startup all of these processes and then exit? Configure once in a while and has no running process?
The same for WiFi. There are many that start with WiFi enabled and begin pulling crap from the internet. This should happen only if i need it!
When i enable my WiFi i have 2-3 minutes lag because of the population that is attempting to get the internet access one on top another faster... Most of them i need only at will. I dont need them to run all the time or when i enable my net.
No one knows of such app here? Common!

did you try Autorun Manager, it seems to work quite ok for me...
another alternative could be Optimize Toolbox, although this one seems to disable only apps based on startup receiver
Let me begin by saying I have a rooted Infuse with Infused 2.2.3 Gingerbread and the Infusion Kernel.
As I use the Infuse over the course of the week, apps get started up and slowly my memory goes down. I can shut off some apps manually, but some refuse to get turned off, even by ram clearing apps and manual rooted actions.
Whenever I want to speed my phone up again and free up Ram, I have to reset my phone.
My question is how would I go about clearing the ram on my phone back to the 'phone-on' starting position, when my apps have yet to be activated?
I have used Advanced Task Killer to attempt this and it does not permanently close apps. I have also used Autokiller Memory Module to close programs, but they also do not stay closed (Is there something to Chuck Norris mode?).
Does anyone know a way to clear the ram back to that point? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Read again:
Apps don't start at once, nor compete. Based on usage of apps, OS loads them into RAM, and keeps them there. The amount of RAM to be always left free is set initially. Rest of the RAM is filled here. Apps filled like this do NOT use CPU. They use CPU only when they are invoked, or backgrounded.
Say you are done working with an app, and use the exit function in it. It just signals OS its end, but the app is not cleaned out of RAM. It is kept until it is invoked again, or pushed out until more free RAM than available is needed or when pushed out manually using task manager.
When any app wants more RAM than what is available, the preloaded ones are pushed out, and this app is loaded.
Too many apps compete for CPU and memory when a user starts hitting "home" button instead of "back" button. Home button pushes apps to background wherein the back button signals u r out of the app. This sets the app to be pushed out of RAM as needed.
I use pretty many apps, and sometimes go on for over a week without bothering to use any task manager to clear out RAM nor noticing any lag.
And to be specific to your question:
There is no time like initial start time until the phone is rebooted again. If u give the phone some time to settle after u reboot it, u can see apps being to memory, be it that they are invoked by you or not. Even if ATK or any task killer kills them, OS respawns them over time based on ur usage of them.

The problem is that even with Android's automatic system, I'm still being given "Low Memory" warnings on all my apps within a few days of rebooting.
I dunno, I think that currently the only real solution is to reboot my phone bi-daily, but I really was hoping there was a way to reset the OS ram without a full reboot.

Maybe u have too many apps open. Not sure what's the case on ur phone. Personally I never faced this low memory issue so far.
By the way, I froze up certain system apps (in tibu) (even deleted some) that I don't use, like Google search, etc cos these r always loaded and I never use them.

I have a tablet android 4.1. After some time I don't have runing apps and I don't have free memory. I don't have running tasks, I don't have cashed tasks. And I don't have free memory. After this critical point the tablet needs restart. Of course after restart everything works fine, for some hours. After sleep the above critical point comes quicker... The problem seems to me like driver or software problem but I can't be sure... I m searching for a similar solution for an app that can without restart, restart my ram, clear completely my ram, not task killing because at the end I don't have tasks to kill... It looks like somehow a garbage ram is created after some time, that kills my ram. It looks like virus but it is not virus as the device is new and I have check for viruses...
Just get the app Startup Manager, stop all user apps (except some that you do want to run), apply, and reboot

Quick and easy approach - use Fast Reboot.
Brings the phone to like-rebooted condition... in about 5 seconds.
Normally don't need it, but occasionally phone gets bogged down and this clears it right up.
Free program.
Another step - a little more work - Find the programs that are running with a service and get rid of them if you don't need them... or use Gemini Apps manager to block auto-start. Google Maps is a good one to block auto start of.
Tried a couple of different ROMS out there, and I'm still getting frequent pausing, temporary locking up on my Gtab when trying to open apps. Am I rushing the poor old guy!? Usually it starts responding again before I even hit "wait" but the frequent pop-up when it slows is really getting to me. Anyone experiencing anything similar? Any good fixes???

What roms are you using? I had this issue with the last dirty bean but get it much less if at all with the 120dpi smoothbean. You can change the governor settins under settings/performance/processor as well as limit background processes to 2/1 that seems to help. I laso turn off sync on gmail which helps.

1. Try Advanced Task Killer and hit the widget button to nuke the memory hogs. There is
a lot of people who dont recommend task killing as a solution, but it seems to get me past the
force closes.
2. Try an old froyo rom like Vegan or TNT Lite 4.4

Recently I was having similar problems with the gtablet slowing down a lot, so I started uninstalling some of my apps.
I had about 220 apps with Application Storage at 212MB free. I messed some uninstall and got into a boot loop.
At which point I did a factory reset. The factory reset ROM was a lot faster. So when I restored my apps and settings
froim Titanium backup, I restored about 120 of them with Application Free Storage at about 700 MB now.
All the slowness of apps and market have gone away.
So I would say if you see a lot of Force Closes or hangs especially during Market Update, considering cutting
down on the number of apps you have. The key metric to see if you are getting full is the
Settings->Storage->Tablet Storage->Application Storage (for Froyo ROMs)
