Hello,
So yesterday, I pulled my phone out of my pocket after average usage for the day and the screen was completely black, but the capacitive buttons at the bottom would still illuminate and cause vibration when touched. I tried a reset, but the screen wouldn't turn back on after the reboot. I tried booting into recovery, and the screen was still black. I also tried plugging it into both my computer, and a regular outlet when off, on, and in recovery, with no results.
At this point, I am pretty sure the screen is just broken, but I wanted to ask here in case there is something else I can do. If it matters, I was running AOKP/CM Nocturnal Dirty 4.2.
Maybe just bad lcd

Hi Everyone,
I'm have a problem with my One XL. It's an Australian Telstra item. I got soaked in the rain and the phone got wet. I put it in rice for a few days to soak up the moisture, then charged it up. After this the screen backlight would intermittently fail, and i noticed if I squeezed the LHS of the phone it would sometimes make the screen go on or off. The problem got worse over the space of about an hour and eventually the screen would not come on. I opened up the case, and noticed there was a split in the ribbon cable that is part of the screen at the point that it is folded over 90deg (I'm not sure why this was never a problem before the phone got wet?)
So I stupidly got straight stuck into taking it apart to replace the screen before backing up all my stuff. I ordered a new screen of ebay and replaced the old one. Now I am having the following behaviour:
1-Press and hold power button - Phone vibrates once, then does nothing. Screen doesn't come on.
2-Plug into PC - LED flashes red for a while then goes solid red. Screen doesn't come on. Nothing pops up in "My computer"
3-Press and hold (~10sec) power after 2 - Red light goes off. Phone vibrates once every ~30 seconds. Screen doesn't come on.
4-Press and hold power after 3 - Home/Back/Apps LEDs flash 20 times, no other change.
I also tried a number of combos of power + vol -/+ with no success.
Also, I was being lazy and doing this without putting the case back on, and my power button has fallen apart. It looks like that ribbon cable is only ~$5 on ebay, so no big deal, but means I cant really do anymore troubleshooting at the moment.
So I guess the big question is, can the phone still be salvaged? I'm thinking maybe it's stuck in a boot loop with the screen also not working?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
The first question I have would be did you make sure you got the right screen? There are three different types of screens that came on this phone and you need to make sure you match it correctly. You can identify the type of screen by the colour of the flex cable attached.
Secondly, you should never use the power + volume up button combination, I'm not sure where you saw that information but it puts the phone into Qualcomm download mode which you definitely don't want. The only button combination that should ever be used is power + volume down.

Hi Timmaaa,
Both screens had the same orange/brown flex cables. I did read that there were different screens, but had thought there were only two and that the other had a green flex, so I definitely didn't get that one. Are the other 2 colours close?
I'm not sure where I read the power + volume up thing as I have read a heap of different threads. What would the expected behaviour be if I had put it into that mode?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Chris
The three different screens have very different colour coding on the flex cable, so matching should be a piece of cake, which I believe you've done correctly. Putting the phone into Qualcomm download mode is kinda like a bricked state, if you're getting the red charging led and the cap button lights flashing I think you're ok.
Another thing to note is that you usually need to sync your new screen when you install it. From memory I believe you need to power the phone on, remove the old screen while the phone is on, and install the new screen while the phone is on. If you didn't follow this process that might be why your display isn't working. Other than that your phone might have just suffered some fatal hardware damage due to the liquid ingress, which isn't going to be fixable.

Thanks again Timmaaa,
I had a closer look at my old screen and it does have the small green section on the flex cable which I didn't notice the first time around. Bugger.
So i disassembled it again and swapped back to the old screen. The display still doesn't turn on, but the phone itself now stays on and the computer recognises it! I'm transferring all my photos across to my computer now, then I'll try to sync it properly and see if that helps.
Cheers,
Chris
Ok so I swapped the screens back and forth with the power on, and now it's working! Thanks Timmaaa, I would never have guessed I needed to have the phone turned on in order to swap parts, seems pretty weird. Now just got to get a new power button.
Cheers,
Chris
Awesome. Glad to be able to help.

I purchased a Razr HD on ebay and the screen won't display an image, the backlight of the screen comes on and it flashes an image for a second when the screen is turned on, but after that it just goes and stays blank. It boots normally because I hear the startup "Droid" sound and by pressing the power button to turn the screen on and off, I see that the device is on but I just can't see anything after the second the screen is first on. I charged it over night and tried reflashing factory firmware and fiddling around with the connectors, but nothing has helped. Any ideas?

What did you do before you started having that issue?
My friend brought me her I515. She's had the following issues:
When trying to boot up, sometimes it will show bootloader screen, sometimes won't. So that means the LCD isn't busted. Will not go into recovery mode to do a hard reset. After some fiddling with it today, I definitely have it turned on, as it is giving me notification sounds and low battery noises. However, the screen is black. I have no idea what is causing this. I didn't think the phone was booting but, as I said, I just received notification sounds. I tried plugging it into my computer but it didn't recognize it.
My friend isn't tech savvy, so as far as I know, the phone is stock. She bought a new battery to try but that doesn't seem to be working. Now that it's on, kind of, I'm going to leave it charging.
Any ideas why the screen is black? And how to fix it?
Hopefully this thread is still active....

additional info: the touchscreen works. When I've had it turned on (still can't see anything on the screen), I can feel the haptic feedback as I unlock it. There is also an LED light that will light up occasionally. Drivers recognize the device when plugged into the computer. Again, no screen.
More than likely the ribbon connecting the LCD to board is shot, hopefully just loose
Open it up and clean the connection and hope it works, if not than a new LCD is in order
So a relative of mine brought me an S6 with a cracked screen. It belongs to his 15 year old daughter. He told me that she dropped it and the phone is now stuck on a black screen. When I put the phone to charge it didn't respond in any way at first. After leaving it like that for 2 hours I tried to boot it up. Only response I got was a flickering blue - light blue led light. So I searched on the net and found a couple of people fixing this problem by holding the power button with the volume down button which performs a simulated battery disconnect, unfortunately absolutely nothing happened. The phone continued to flicker the blue - light blue light. The screen is probably dead as no matter what I try it is also black. I tried entering recovery mode, nothing changed (flickering blue light), than I tried entering download mode and the flickering blue light changed to a constant red light which after a while changed to green, I am guessing the phone was charging now (screen still black). So I downloaded ODIN to see if the PC will recognize the phone and oddly enough when I connected the USB it did recognize it. So what I'm thinking is that the screen is probably dead as no matter what I do it is always black, but I am not sure what else is wrong with it... Is another hardware peace broken from the fall or did the system just got messed up is that even possible from a fall? If just the screen is dead shouldn't the phone just boot up normally and have sound, like being able to ring and stuff ... Any advice/ opinion will be greatly appreciated.
Hello
Today my SM930F seems to have freezed. Basically I picked up the phone and the display would light up only one pixel. Others are utterly black. I tried rebooting the phone. PWR + VOL DOWN, tried rebooting into recovery and download. It seems to reboot into them just fine, but I can't operate them, beacuse nothing shows up. Screen is dead black. Phone is recognised by my computer and Odin. Seems to be charging normally when plugged in a wall charger. As I recall the phone was running a stock rom. LED and soft keys light up normally. Glass is a cracked on both sides of my phone, but I think it's a software issue. In other threads people have reported that Spotify app can cause similar problems and I have it installed.
EDIT: it seems that I cannot boot into download - I tried it, plugged my phone and flashed a stock rom. Whole process ended in 5 seconds, so it seems that the device is either still powered on or hangs on a bootloop - idk
