This release is basically the first stable end user friendly version of XBMC for Android that should work great on pretty much any Android powered device. Since XBMC still doesn't support hardware accelerated video decoding on most devices, support for an external video player is included in this release, that way you'll still be able to enjoy a flawless XBMC experience since the external video player itself does support hardware accelerated video decoding.
You'll also find that a bunch of customizations have been made in order to make the whole XBMC experience more enjoyable for the end user, some user experience and some functionality related.
Hopefully this will change the public perception of XBMC just being a media player, and most people will realize that it's much more: a media platform that interfaces with online streaming video content, bringing online streaming technology directly to your favourite devices in an easy to navigate VOD system with endless possibilities.

Re: [APP][2.3+][RELEASE] The First End User Friendly Version of XBMC for Android
What is this exactly? Watch TV and movies from my phone?
That's what I got from the video
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

This is the XBMC for Android but, basically, instead of use the internal video player, it uses an external app (such as MX Player) to play videos, etc, also has lots of features.
It's working really good on my GTab 7+, thanks! I hope you can fix the samba issue, I would love to stream the library from my HTPC.

ill this apk work on an arm v6 phone?

So is it only MX Player Free that doesn't support samba streams, or is it all external players? I basically only use xbmc for samba streams on my local network since all my media is on my FreeNas. I use nfs to conect with computers and my htpc, but I couldn't figure out how to do nas with android xbmc. If samba is broken for everything, would it work over nas, if that's even an option? I'm running the rc from xbmc.org right now so just trying to decide if its worth installing this one instead since it will be a pain since I assume this uses different signing keys. Anyways, keep up the great work xbmc guys. Being able to run xbmc on all the things is awesome!

For smb to work with mx player, XBMC should present the file as a http stream, which it does not. So smb whith external player does not work.
You better check xbmc builds with libstagefright enabled. This is the way to go.
As a workaround of you have root then mount the shares on local folders using cifs manager, then the build from this thread should work.

Which version do I have to install for my Nexus 10?
thx

Anyone know if you are taken back to xbmc once you close mxplayer?
Thanks

Huh?
Ok soo... Not a noob or anything but I've only recently seen the terms "neon" and "non-neon". WTH is that?

c/p from wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture#Other_features
Advanced SIMD (NEON)
The Advanced SIMD extension (aka NEON or "MPE" Media Processing Engine) is a combined 64- and 128-bit single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instruction set that provides standardised acceleration for media and signal processing applications. NEON is included in all Cortex-A8 devices but is optional in Cortex-A9 devices.[36] NEON can execute MP3 audio decoding on CPUs running at 10 MHz and can run the GSM adaptive multi-rate (AMR) speech codec at no more than 13 MHz. It features a comprehensive instruction set, separate register files and independent execution hardware.[37] NEON supports 8-, 16-, 32- and 64-bit integer and single-precision (32-bit) floating-point data and SIMD operations for handling audio and video processing as well as graphics and gaming processing. In NEON, the SIMD supports up to 16 operations at the same time. The NEON hardware shares the same floating-point registers as used in VFP. Devices such as the ARM Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A9 support 128-bit vectors but will execute with 64 bits at a time,[35] whereas newer Cortex-A15 devices can execute 128 bits at a time.

here's a logcat from my crash
http://pastie.org/5718669

If we have an existing XBMC setup and we're using a MySQL DB for library management, is there any way to edit the advancedsettings.xml file on this build? I looked on the SD card but didn't see anything.
EDIT: This folder does not exist for me: <sdcard>/Android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc (after running it at least once)
EDIT2: It shows up in ES file explorer but wouldn't show up on my computer when i browsed via a USB connection, however, it's empty. Are the files being saved somewhere else?

Over scrolling on left side of screen.
Happens in most areas.

Which build? The crash looks like it can't find the default skin which is very odd.

You can also use mount manager from the market as well. I have been digging into getting MX Player working with SMB but I have met with little success. I did discover it seemed MX Player needed files from samba presented as an HTTP stream but I've not had a chance to dig into how to implement this functionality properly. Any suggestions?

Reports and some of my own testing indicate that few, if any external players are going to "just work" with samba sources. I am digging into the issue further. NAS is an option, but few have reported that it works or doesn't work from what I've read. UPNP seems to be the most often mentioned alternative to SMB.

DLNA player for Android?

Ok, I use TVersity/PS3 Media Server to share my media to my TV/PS3/360 for viewing on the TV, and now i'm using PlayON to eventually replace it.
I was wondering if there is an app that anyone knows of for Android that will play DLNA shared content (over 3G/Wifi)
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated
now i just have to find a set of TV cables for my Incredible
Twonky works for PS3 but not 360.
sorry, i should have clarified, I want to be able to see my media server content on my phone, not from my phone to my PS3/360.
Thanks though, i may have to look that server up
I think I recall reading the Samsung Galaxy S will include a DLNA client and server app.
simply google samsung dlna, there was a posting on phandroid about it. (i would post the link but new account, first post, etc)

While I have DLNA on my Samsung TV, every search i did for the DLNA component of Galaxy S says sharing to the living room, not the phone.
I need it to be from the PC server to the phone via DLNA, not the other way around
Thanks for the info though, didn't know Samsung was making an app for Android
i hope to find one
one thing i found interesting while searching through the list of managed applications on my Incredible was, I found that theres an application similar to the one on Windows Mobile by HTC called "Streaming Media Player by HTC" but i can't find anywhere to run the application, its like its "hidden"

Free player that works on Galaxy tab
Try Vplayer (free) that was just released on the market. If your server or NAS has basic http viewer (Twonky or otherwise) you can navigate to your media files through a browser and long click on your file and select vplayer as your preferred player. This has worked flawlessly on my galaxy tab.
Also if you have access to the pay market I've seen that Plug player was just released that should be able to playback videos straight of the server without the need for browser access.
This was the last thing my tab wasn't able to do so now it's complete and perfect..
supply this link for you: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/dlna+player
this site lists dlna player for android, hope you can get you want
Hey I know what you're looking for, however no great solution for Android yet, the following is a list of programs which will work, but none are perfect, a lot have some features not all, and 3g streaming is sketchy, anyway check em out see if any work for you.
Qloud video
RedDONUT
PLEX
MIRAGE
VLC Remote
I am still hoping airvideo will someday become available for android, this is the perfect app for this in iOS
Look up upnplay on the market. I've been using it for a couple months now and it works perfectly for me.

they have a dlna player on the Droid X. i might be able to pull it from it tomorrow. you can see if it works from that.
A lot of these streaming bundles are a specific server and client pair...
I installed a generic DLNA server - TVersity and then installed one of the many DLNA browser/player apps from the market.. My Samsung Charge already has one on it - allshare..
On my tablet I settled on bubbleUPNP. It allows me to browse the video audio etc.. and play the media on the media player on the my choice - MXVideo..
No specific player/server combination is needed.

Try Skifta.
PLEX Update
PLEX has just been updated and the latest server version and client allow you to stream all your media to your phone via 3G or WIfI, best of all, all you have to do is login to your account on the server and on the phone and it just works. I have been waiting for an app to do this on Android for a long time, PLEX is now my number one program on my phone.
How is plex compared to emit?

watch on tv what's on the phone's screen
hi guys,
is there any way to stream through a dlna server what is showing on the phone screen? it would be nice to sit in front of my tv and surf the internet on a 56" screen instead of a 4" screen.
Another option
I set up my videos folder on my HTPC as a network share, and installed esfilexplorer and mxvideo apps. I just connected via wifi in esFileExplorer and select videos and play them back with MxVideo works great. I am doing this on a Lenovo IdeaPad K1.
I also run tversity and can connect to htpc via web interface if I am not on home network, works but web interface is pretty basic and load times can be long on large files.

Bubble is great and it controls the volume on my tv yaaaaaay
Skifta is probably the best for DLNA client/server on Droid that is free (if you want you can setup their PC server for playing the media on your comp anywhere via 3G/WiFi even at a friends and if you want you can even remote access your home DLNA server from your friends house then use your Droid as a bridge to any DLNA client on that wifi network. It's pretty cool.
If you're a TVersity fan/lover, just enable web access and use their flash or mobile relay interface to watch over 3G or Wifi (but you'll need a streaming player like MX Video or alike to watch remotely instead of downloading then watching).
I myself use Skifta only on my phone and combine TVersity on my PC with web portal activated and MX Video to watch everything.
(Twonky is good if you have an Internet TV but costs money and their help desk is ****).

[App][2.2+] DreamStreamoid - TV everywhere (3G with android, VLC and dreambox)

I’d like to introduce DreamStreamoid.
DreamStreamoid is an android client for enigma2 receivers (e.g. Dreambox, VU+, IPBox, QBox).
The focus is on the streaming of TV, radio and recordings.
You can easily stream channels and recordings, switch channels, browse the EPG, choose bitrates and scalings via the mobile phone and much more.
It is possible to stream your audio and video content to your phone where ever you are, if you have at least a 3G internet connection (over a VLC server).

Hey
Very cool app - works great!
Great, works well - any chance you can add support for SSL?
Possibly!
The problem is, that VLC doesn’t support https!
And using the enigma WebIf over https, the way other tools (like dreamdroid) are doing that, doesn’t seem much more secure!
In a other thread, I’ve found this:
The problem with https is, you can never be sure, that the box you are talking to is your receiver.
Because every dreambox has the same certificate! Or am I wrong?
Click to collapse
That’s certainly right!
It would be most secure, if you create a own ssl certificate and exchange it between phone and receiver.
I could imagine to write a ssl proxy running on the VLC-PC or receiver.
The challenge is to make it easy to use.
We will see…
If anybody has a different opinion – please, let me know!

Tool to restart the vlc service process?
Hello Torsten,
First of all, thanks for this great tool!
But I've got 2 questions:
1) After I've watch one channel via 3G and I want to watch a other channel then 9 out of 10 times I only hear a sound chip and then nothing happens.
After I restart the VLC service process (which is allot faster to do then to reboot the whole machine (which by the way; the pro plug in works great ) then I can watch successfully to a other channel.
So can you upgrade the pro plug in so that the user can choose to just only restart the VLC service process or the server?
(My config; Latest VLC version (v1.1.11) and Win7 64-Bit).
2) Is it possible to use fast forward (or skip to xx:xx time frame),etc, when 3G and VLC is being used to watch recordings? (This seems only to be working locally when using Vplayer).
Thanks in advance!!

For the time beeing I use anoter app to change channel then request stream - OK
Hi matsene
DreamStreamoid doesn't switch channels on your TV.
If you use a receiver with only one tuner, you can turn your box into standby.
That will solve your problem.

OK - then i suggest that you add functionality so that I can control what channels to stream from the dramstreamoid - avoiding the need to use e.g DreamDroid to switch channels.

Can someone help?
Hi praun
The plugin runs in backround.
You can't see anything!
Sometimes I will enhance the plugin with a log window or something like that.
It is probably a problem of the configuration of your PC.
You have to enable WOL in the BIOS and Windows.
Perhaps, you try a WOL Client from a second PC or try a WOL-App on your phone.

if it possible to use my pc at work as a vlc server ?
(my pc at work is online 24/7 and i have control to open any port there it behind fortiget firewall)
if it possible how to do that ?
Hi avinaimi
It could be possible, if you have a very high upload bandwith at home.
I would say at least 7-8Mbit/s. And you should use a VPN. Otherwise it is not secure.
You could use the PRO version. With that, you can switch your PC on and off from your phone!

- IMPORTANT: Exit the app (More > "X" bottom left icon)
- restart the app
- run the app and trigger the problem to troubleshoot
- exit the app
- email me the files found on internal storage:
On Android 10 and below:
/Android/data/com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp/log.txt
/Android/data/com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp/prev_log.txt
On Android 11 and higher:
/Documents/com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp_log.txt
/Documents/prev_com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp_log.txt (if present)
You can access them with a file manager app and share them to your email app for sending them.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to not restart BubbleUPnP until you have sent or saved the log file as it is overwritten on app startup.
Looks like an awesome app - all the features I want... BUT it is not currently recognizing my Synology NAS (upnp/dlna). Win 7 media player works great.
EDIT - Sorry it did eventually show up. It would be nice to have some asynchronous loading notifications. Also, if I queue up an entire genre, for example, it takes a looong time to load/start playing (thousands of songs). Otherwise looking good.

I'll think again about async loading notifications (I suppose you mean loading of folders here), but I do not like the additional clutter they involve.
For the second point, the playlist is not designed to handle thousands of tracks. What what your exact use case ? Doing shuffle on an entire genre ?

I updated the first post with an Android Market link to install the app.

Yeah, exactly. But after using it for a while, I don't mind the delay all that much since it only happens on the initial adding the songs to the playlist. Once the songs are added there are no slowdowns.
No other complaints really - hands down the best functioning and looking UPnP audio player on the market.
excellent app, works great with PS3MediaServer
minor issues:
reports search as not supported but I guess that's a PS3MediaServer problem?
doesn't show any album art
I have a DLNA TV (LG_42LD790) but it doesn't show up as a renderer, only local renderer available
how much are you going to charge for the unlocker?

Yes, it doesn't support searching at all.
I tried PS3MediaServer and it is not the best server you can find for audio (only folder browsing, no search, some bugs in returned data).
I found 2 bugs in less than 1h usage

Undecided yet but it won't break the bank .
Correction: album art is working ok with ps3mediaserver, think I must have been playing tracks without art, doh!
1: has the potential of being better than upnplay (although the latter is free & ad-free)
2: needs a landscape mode (or use system/sensor detection)
3: exit on back key press
4: ability to add WAN server
5: use built-in player (like you already do for music types) for divx+mp3,x264+aac,mpeg2 files (detect via 4cc and/or extension - avi,divx,mkv,mp4,mpg,mpeg,vob,m2v)
open external player for other file types (mov/qt/rm/ac3); the system, hardware renderer should be able to decode most of the aforementioned files, thus eliminating the need for an additional app expressedly for that purpose (vplayer/mobo etc)
This COULD give you an edge over the other upnp/dlna solutions, since none of them provide this functionality (yet).
My Setup: Twonky Media Server and WD TV Live as Renderer!
This setup works fine with other apps, also on iOS...
BubbleUPNP looks really good, BUT:
- the timeline / song progress bar (dont know how you call it) doesn't work (even if use the setting 'use other...')!
-> so as a result, the next song in the playlist doesnt play
So by now, the app is useless. Would like to use yours, all the others work, but yours seems more smooth and has a better usability.
Looking forward to some updates!
Would def. pay for this if the issue gets fixed!

2. Not a priority for the initial stable version but in consideration for future versions. Landscape is mostly useful for tablets as it is the natural orientation.
3. You can exit the app via the "Exit" menu action found in the Now Playing tab.
4. definitely on the todo list although probably not in the first stable version
5 in consideration for a future verson

Thanks for reporting, it is a sign that the app has trouble getting timing info from the WD TV Live. There's logging inside the app that should be able to tell why and allow me to fix it. Can you record a log file following the step below, and send me the log to [email protected]:
- launch the app
- go into the Settings page (Menu > Settings) and then in the Advanced Settings section
- check "Enable logging to file".
- IMPORTANT: Exit the app using the "Exit " menu item found in menu of tab "Now Playing"
- restart the app.
- handle the app to trigger the problem
- connect your phone to your PC or MAC and mail me the file /Android/data/com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp/log.txt found on the SD Card
Using as Renderer and Controller on two devices
Hi,
I am using your app to control my old HD2 (CM7) connected to external speakers with my Galaxy S2.
I am having some issues that when I start it up to control the renderer and the renderer have been running for some time, sometimes it will not find/connect to the renderer.
If I restart both apps then they will usually pick up and connect to each other again. I am not sure if this is my HD2 going to sleep in some way that makes it not being visible. But it will still continue to play music from my upnp server (WMP7) though I can't control or add new tracks...
I will put both devices to log when I am home later tonight and send you some log files that hopefully will help.
Thanks for all the hard work!
Cheers
Jonas

I just upgraded my SGS from stock 2.2 to CM7 and fixed today a WiFi connectivity issues that is related to sleep mode. It is not CM7 specific but related to how the WiFi chipset operates when going into power save mode.
So look forward to the next beta which should be out soon.
Using WMP as media player
Hi,
I just installed BubbleUPnP, and it looks really great. I already tested a few similar apps (2Player, Andromote, etc) but it's definetely the most impressive and promising one.
I just encounter a small problem when I enqueue a few music files and then launch the playlist. it sends each file to WMP but directly goes to the next one until the last one. So, only the last file is read.
A workaround is to launch the playlist with only 1 item, and then add other items while playing. Don't know if the problem comes from BubbleUPnP or WMP...
Also FYI, my Synology is well recognized, as well as my Samsung LED TV.

Can you try playing a video on your Samsung TV an tell me if it works ?
I haven't tried it as there is no point, being a BubbleDS user already (and loving it, might I add...feels like a factory app and works far better than anything on the Apple side). But just out of interest, will this be a separate product or will BubbleDS be merged with it?

BubbleUPnP and BubbleDS will remain separate apps (mostly to avoid to clutter BubbleDS with unneeded stuff).
The next major version of BubbleDS will be updated to use the same codebase than BubbleUPnP, which will bring some fixes and even some new functionnality (Shuffle Library).
As a bonus, BubbleUPnP will be a free app to use for BubbleDS owners, as it will act as an unlocker.
Thanks for the clarification

Yes, I tried. It works like a charm. Furthermore, my TV shows SRT subtitles as if I launched the video from the TV itself.

[APP][4.0+] vGet: Stream, Download, DLNA/UPnP of Embedded Videos

I've released vGet (Play Store) as a tool to download HTML5 videos from any site for later offline viewing.
It works as a simple web browser, but instead of playing the videos directly it allows to download embedded videos or play them with a player of choice. This also works for many flash videos.
It includes has an integrated download manager that supports multiple concurrent connections to speed up downloading form slow servers.
It has two browsing modes:
Desktop/Flash Mode: Pretends to be a Desktop Browser with Flash support. Some sites only show (flash) videos if they detect a desktop browser. It basically extracts the video URL used by the Flash Player. This only works if the video is a static file - which it is in most cases. But as there is no canonical show a video with Flash it can fail to extract the video URL. It also does not work for RTSP or live streams.
Mobile Mode: Pretends to be a Mobile browser without Flash support. Some sites support HTML5 videos, but only use them if Flash is NOT supported by the browser (which is kind of silly but it happens). This should work an all sites that use HTML5 Videos. The only exception that I am aware of is HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) which is currently not supported by vGet.
HTML5-Videos are also detected in Desktop Mode - if used by the site.
NEW: vGet (v0.3) now allows to play (cast) videos directly on a DLNA-Device (for example your SmartTV, XBoX, MediaCenter, AllShare device etc.). vGet instructs your SmartTV to streams the video directly from the Internet. The video stream is not relayed though vGet. This saves battery and even allows to turn of your Android device completely while the video keeps playing. Please note that this feature is still experimental and depends on the capabilities of your DLNA Device.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Let me know if you find a site where it is not working as expected.
BTW, also if you're missing a feature or have suggestions for improvements use the issue tracker or just post them here.
DLNA support
Version 0.3 adds DLNA-Support:

The video stream is not relayed though vGet. This saves battery and even allows to turn of your Android device completely while the video keeps playing. Yes, Youtube is disabled - otherwise distribution in Play Store would not be possible.
Works perfect here on htc one GE @ 4.3.
DLNA is the best feature and it works nicely on my desktop here with wmp.
I will try this later on my Samsung F series model at home.
Looks realy promising and makes a chromecast dongle needless if the tv can handle upnp.
Is there a chance to get the "Youtube unlocked version" here as apk in the forum?

I personally didn't feel the need to use it on Youtube yet. But maybe, I'll release a non-Play Store version at some stage.
update
v0.3.1 reduces battery usage by disconnecting from playing DLNA-Devices while the screen is turned off.
So now vGet does not consume any power at all while playing on a DLNA device when the screen is turned off.

thanks a lot for this man! I dumped a lot of apps in place of this. i have firefox+flashdownloader plugin installed on my phone just for saving flash videos but I guess it's goodbye FF and Flash Player for me I love how the download continues even after phone restarts. more power to the development of this app man! a release that works with youtube videos will be more awesome, hoping you consider it! thanks again.
perfect!
Hi,
congratulations for the great app. I use it a lot. Do you guys know if a similar solution exists for Windows 7?? Maybe as a plugin for firefox or chrome? Since some of the websites are not optimized for mobile gadgets i'd like to stream from my laptop instead of from my android phone. I've tried to google but could not find anything...
Thanx for some hints!

I guess you are referring to the DLNA feature? I was actually thinking about releasing a Chrome extension with features similar to vGet. But it would probably lack DLNA support as this would require native code (a browser plugin) and I don't like that idea. Chromecast could be supported in a browser extension, but it only supports a limited set of media formats - so it would not work for many flash videos.
You could of course just playback on the computer and mirrors the complete screen - but that's rather inefficient.
Personally I just use a tablet instead of a phone for vGet, so non-mobile sites are not too hard to use.

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I mean the DLNA feature. I don't wanna buy another device such as chromecast so I was hoping for such a convienient way to stream to my WD TV like with vget. I tried to mirror the screen already but performance is not the best. Anyway, thanks again for your reply.

FireTV vs Nexus Player vs Ouya vs Mojo

Received my Nexus Player and the first thing i did was install Kodi x86 on it.
My Setup:
Synology 1812+ with 8 3TB WD Harddrives in SHR (Synology version of Raid5)
Using NFS to Share movies from NAS
Netgear R8000 running DDWRT
Using 802.11ac on Nexus Player
Pioneer AV Receiver capable of AC3. DTS, TrueHD and DTS-HD
Once kodi was installed I added my collection of movies (1300+) most of them are 1080p rips ranging from 9GB - 20GB per movie. I was extremely impressed how fast it downloaded Cover Art and thumbnail pictures for all my media, tested a couple of kodi addons like xbmctorrent, 1channel, sportsdevil, acestream setup and Genesis with everything working perfectly. Now I understand that most dont have an AC router but for those that do this thing runs really quick. For those wondering, this device is capable of audio pass through so unlike some of my other devices (Nvidia Shield Tablet, Madcatz Mojo) i actually get true surround sound. Similar to the FireTV the nexus player and player AC3 (Dolby Digital) and DTS perfectly, if you have a video that is DTS-HD it will play the DTS version and if you have a video that has a TrueHD track then it'll be stereo. The only down side of the Nexus Player was the lack of buttons on the remote, i found myself having to use XBMC Remote a couple of times during setup and configuration (lack of menu key). I can now finally get rid of my Madcatz Mojo and Ouya, i kept both of them because i feared amazon would start blocking devices that didn’t have the latest unrooted version, yes yes I know you can side load rooted versions but isn’t it nice having a device that doesnt have the bootloader locked? where you don’t have a lingering feeling that Google will on day block XBMC/Kodi like you fear with Amazon.
I grabbed the minecraft apk from the fire tv hoping i could sideload it on the Nexus Player and get Controller support but it didnt run as planned. graphics looked like they loaded half way so im guessing thats a Intel Chip issue since i've been able to side load that apk on the the nvidia shield tablet.

Pros

The Nexus Player Controller works on the Ouya and the Ouya Controller also works on the Nexus Player.
So is the Nexus Player fast enough to open 20GB movies over NAS through WiFi? I use FireTV with Kodi right now and 10GB are not a problem but I had to raise the XBMC cache a bit - otherwise there was some buffering happening at random times.
By the way - you can use FireTV remote on the Nexus Player - but you have to pair it meaning it won't be easy to switch between FireTV and Nexus Player if you want to use both.
That's correct, I can play 20GB files easily without any drops. Nexus Player is 20 feet away from router.
I havent paired a fire remote to the nexus player but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'll test later today but if I pair a fire remote why do I still need the nexus remote?
I received my firetv stick for prime customers the other day too, and the sticks remote is much better than the flimsy nexus remote

If you use fusion its in the system tweaks.

1Gb of Ram (yes its half of the fire TV but i didnt notice lag in my tests)
Ethernet port (Even though FireTV only has fastethernet which is only 100mbps)
lack of buttons on the remote (this was a bit annoying during setup)
Ran some speed test using SFTP to test real world speeds.
Nexus Player (802.11ac) at 3.59MB/s
FireTv (Ethernet) at 4.18MB/s
Nexus Player with RJ45 Adapter at 3.82MB/s
FireTV Stick (802.11n 5GHZ) at 1.41MB/s

How to make a good choice between the Amazon Fire TV and the Google Nexus Player? I live in Europe (not Germany / UK) so I don't know any people with the AFTV or the NP.
When I search Google for reviews (comparing both devices for example), I only find some short summary's of the devices without focus on the things I care about. What I'm missing is explanation and discription of items like HDMI-CEC functionality, handling HLS streaming apps, working with an USB-hub, installing KODI (and what video formats are supported), sideloading apps, (lack off) auto frame rate switching, installing different launchers, reviewing the controllers / remotes / available remote apps, etc, etc.
Someone who can help me with this choice?

In my opinion I would go with the Nexus Player, the FireTV has a usb but does not work, whereas the Nexus Player's usb can be enabled giving you access to a usb hub. I have this working. Not that familiar with HLS, but from a quick search seems to be an apple standard. HDMI-CEC is simply turning on the TV via the nexus player and switching to the correct HDMI input, not really a huge feature in my book, but to each their own.
Kodi can be installed, but is not ready for prime time just yet, it works but on and off, I would say its more a google os problem than a kodi problem. I believe this will get resolved. There is another thread that lists apps that can be sideloaded, its growing and will only get bigger as devs enable their apps for android tv. Not sure about autoframe rate switching, but different launchers already work with nexus player. Third party controllers and remotes work with the nexus player.
I think one area you should consider is the the nexus player is already rooted and the FireTV is closed, this makes the nexus player a lot more flexible for future hacks and development. Another area is the performance, the nexus player is a better performing device. Your use case would be the determining factor, in mine I was looking for an open low cost htpc and the nexus player delivers on that.
can you run some synthetic benchmarks like 3dmark or Antutu?

Thanks for your reaction I think you've giving a lot of useful information and I don't understand why reviewers don't That's my main point.

I've heard about a user with an unrooted AFTV which made an usb-hub working. Managed to connect several usb devices like a keyboard / mouse / controller. Ethernet of course isn't necessary at the AFTV. And yes, usb hdd's won't work without root but I don't need it because I've a Synology NAS.

Yes, it might be an Apple standard but that's not the case in the Netherlands I suppose. We're using a lot of (Android) apps for watching TV or to watch some missed programs. Those apps request HLS support.

Is it possible to control the Nexus Player with the TV remote (main point for using the device within my family)? Move up-down-right-left, play, pause, stop, back, etc?

I agree. Kodi is stable on the AFTV I think?

Nice to know. I think there's no difference between the AFTV and the NP at this point.

You're completely right about rooting, but I'm not very familiar with it so I don't know if I would root my device any way. Performance wise? I don't know why the NP performs better? I think they're roughly comparable.
Your use case would be the determining factor, in mine I was looking for an open low cost htpc and the nexus player delivers on that.

I'm looking for a low cost htpc with capability to use XBMC, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify and several specific Dutch apps. So basically I think both devices will deliver on that, but I can't make up the exactly correct balance.
Which of these players (or other Android sticks/boxes) can do DD 5.1 audio in the Netflix app?
What about bitstreaming HD audio formats (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD) to an AVR?
