Dropbox vs SugarSync? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I'm not here to promote hate towards either app as they're both really good, however, I'm trying to be able to have a folder that I can place a photo in or even any other files in that would sync directly to my phone.
Say for example I wanted to send a picture to someone through a text, but the picture is on my desktop. If I use Dropbox, it isn't possible to get the picture directly onto the phone where I could send said picture, or any other file I wanted to send. There's no way to download the picture unless you "favorite" it, and who wants to do that for 50 photos?
With SugarSync, I could create a folder for my phone specifically so whenever I put a file/photo into the folder from my desktop, I can look at my phone and see it syncing onto it immediately.
So my question is, why hasn't Dropbox came up with this? I know it's "possible" to achieve this same result with ANOTHER extra app, but that's 1 app too much for that one thing. Also, are there other syncing apps out there that are good and known? I didn't really like or want to go with SugarSync since their Android app hasn't been updated for ages.
What are your thoughts?

Did you download the Dropbox app on your computer?
I have it on my PC and anything I save on it is instantly accessible from my DB account.

Yes. But any photos just go to the Dropbox "cloud" and you can't download them to your phone via the app unless you just favorite each and every one of them.

Not sure of your issue but if you have a photo in drop box you can use your phone to view it and hit export. It'll ask where. You can tap sd card. And viola... It's on you phone.

I'm with crash psycho, Im an avid user of drop box and the method nu just described for sugar is what I do with drop box. As soon as I add or delete from my phone or the computer it syncs RIGHT AWAY, no delay.
Unless or not using the native drop box app, or a really old version...

Meh. The only problem, is what if I have 50 Photos I want to have on my phone, from my Desktop? Am I going to have to go to my Phone and click each and every photo and hit More -> Export -> SD Card, rinse and repeat x50? I know I can hook up my phone and just copy it over, but that's a hassle to do when you could just drag and drop.

They should introduce an app, i agree. But they are still offering something that could easily cater the need of photo storage.

No option to save contact to Google

My TB is not rooted and I have done a hard reset to try to solve this issue with no luck. When I add a contact it will automatically save it to the local phone book and never get an option to save it to google. Even with a sync the contacts I put in my phone never sync. I have searched for a resolution with no avail. Any help is appreciated!
Are you sure you are not over looking the option at the very top? When adding from call log or directly from contacts, the very frist thing on the list says "phone" with a drop down arrow. You can choose to save to google, sim, or phone.

I've been having a similar issue on my rooted Thunderbolt. Every time I flash a new Rom, I lose my most recently added contacts. I just double checked my contacts and I have 16 saved to the phone (not Google) and I see no way to move them to Google. There has to be something simple that I'm overlooking.

Yes, when I save a number from the call list I get the option to "Create New Contact" or Save to existing contact". Either option allows me to type in a name etc. but never get a prompt where to save it nor can I go back and edit the contact and change whether it's saved to phone or Google. I can even hit the "link" button in the top right hand corner and the only option I get is. "All Contacts" I have hard reset the phone twice, and also removed the memory card for troubleshooting purposes.
Ok, I found a fix for this. In your contacts, select menu, import/export, export to SD card and choose to export your phone contacts. Now go to menu, view, and deselect all options except phone contacts. Delete every phone contact you have. Now select menu, import/export, import from SD card, choose the file you just created (if you have more than one) and select Google to import. Now all of the phone contacts are Google contacts and you don't have any duplicates.
As for new contacts, I have an option to select Google or sim but I always forget to. Looks like I'll be doing this often.
Hope this helps you!

yup, it's right under name when you first save the contact. I don't think you can change it afterwards (which is retarded IMO). To be honest, I really like sense, but the AOSP dialer saves a lot of headache in this department...
On one Rom, I actually had to swipe contact entry page down to see the option of where to add number.

Can you post a pic of the screen you get when you add new contacts? I've forgot what the stock contact app looks like. I am on a Sense (Gingerbread) rom so I would think they're the same or similar. When I click phone at the top I get a pop up menu.

If you go to People. Then Menu -> View. Is Google checked? If only one thing is checked then you never get a choice, it automatically assigns the contact to that selection.
I made sure that Google is the ONLY option I have checked. I never get a choice either, but everything syncs to Google and nothing the the Phone or Sim.

Good find.
Of course the obvious problem I have with this is that if they ever get smart and choose a different way to identify the device manufacturer, they have no reason to save your data. In fact, they'd probably instantly wipe it out of spite.
So it becomes cloud storage that is free, but insecure and unreliable... and isn't that kind of the point of clout storage?

Yes, this is totally worth your time.
Think of Dropbox like your online storage, and box.net more like near off-line. I use Dropbox for keeping files that I refer to, or occasionally edit synchronized between three machines, and it works great for that but since I'm limited in drive space I keep it fairly clean. With box.net, I'll be using that more for archiving things like legal documents, static documents, etc...

there is no file it only allow you to import from a file not to export it. And if it did it i guess it wouldn't backup the SIM's contacts i guess.
right you want to put your sim contacts from sim to phone yes.. i thought you had them in a file already.
ok do you use ms outlook to store calendar & contacts? if so you can export them from outlook in file format (if you don't know how then google outlook import/export).. then place the file to your phone.. done.
or if you use google sync, and had sync'd you calendar & contacts before then simply re-sync your phone.
If all you need is to show sim contacts and you have no alternative, try the above or start from scratch.

On my ICS (MV2), there is an option to 'Import from SIM card'. It then gives me a list of all my contacts on SIM and I can import them freely.
I don't know if the import actually works because I don't have any SIM contacts, but it should.

Apple's Passbook on Android! UPDATED with mini FAQ

The one cool thing that the Iphone 5 (and earlier, with IOS6) phones have that we didn't before now is PassBook. A developer has come up with a way to display passbook files on the android. Instructions are below - but be sure to read the mini FAQ!!! (work in progress):
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) download passwallet from the google play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.attidomobile.passwallet
2) when you open it, ignore the message "apple hasn't released" etc etc..
3) click on the tickets under the message above the "passfu" link (more on this later.
4) this will take you to http://www.passsource.com/ a website IOS users use to create a passbook barcode.
5) when you create your passbook barcode - select DOWNLOAD - when you open it - it will be imported into PassWallet (see #1)
6) now you can open your barcodes inside the passwallet app.
- to delete the barcodes you create - just open the barcode , click menu, delete.
FAQ:
Q: Can i use any passbook from a website like passsource.com?
A: prior to this faq, i thought that was the case - but sadly that is not correct. I found out the hard way when trying to scan my LA FITNESS barcode just to end up at the front desk with the manager looking at me like i was retarded...
When i emailed passsource asking what happened, they told me this:
"The official passes (on the get page) should work. The create templates are proof of concepts. Some work to varying degrees. We'll be taking the barcode off the LA Fitness pass soon to prevent confusion. We apologize for the trouble. Have you told the LA Fitness you want them to support Passbook?"
Q: so where can i get passbook codes that will work?
A: according to passsource.com, these are the official passbook files that WILL WORK: http://www.passsource.com/get.php
Q: So what are all the other passbook files it will let me create under http://www.passsource.com/selectPublicTemplate.php?
A: This seems to be a demo website to show other future potential companies that they can use passbook and how easy it would be to generate codes.
Q: Will passbook last? isn't apple getting sued?
A: i am not a lawyer, but i dont see it going away any time soon. But yes apple is being sued, see http://www.tomshardware.com/news/iOS-6-Passbook-iPhone-Apple,18076.html
Q: But there are only a few couple companies supporting passbook, what is the point?
A: good question, but im sure in the coming months we will see real support for it.
Q: when i open up passwallet, i see other places to create passbook files, like passfu, passk.it, ipass.pk, etc - what is the difference between them and passsource?
A: they all are pretty much the same thing, use anyone you want. but make sure to only create passes officially supported (see the first question)
Here is a video on how passwallet works, from the app creator's official youtube page
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHc6gWfyJac
When i get more information this will be updated!

Still trying to figure out how this works.
So I go to one of the links on the homepage of the app and it opens my browser to a service that creates passbook files. I can entire my rewards card information for a store, for example, and then it creates the passbook file and saves it to my sdcard.
What do I do from there? How do I get that into passwallet?

You create the file and download it.. Then open it and it should open in the only program on your phone that knows how to handle the files.. Pass wallet..
Once imported you will see it.
If for some reason it doesn't know Pass wallet is installed, I'd reinstall it.

You should be able to open the files from the download notification or a file browser, in the same way that you can open PDFs/APKs. If you can't can you email the developer support.
Thanks.
I see now. On my Verizon Galaxy S3, I had to choose image when I double clicked the file in my file browser, then I got passwallet as one of the programs to open with. I guess if I set it as the default app, I won't have to do that next time.
Now, I just need to figure out what Apple's passbook really is and how/where to use these pass cards.
So I tried to use it at La fitness and their scanner didn't scan it.
Manager told me they aren't setup for passbook yet...

I'll modify OP when I get to a computer.
Apparently most of the passes you can generate on the site are templates and not actually usable.
" The official passes (on the get page) should work. The create templates are proof of concepts. Some work to varying degrees. Just tried this app for the first time. Once I added a pass file it suddenly tried to gain root access for no obvious reason. I've denied that of cause, resulting in a crash loop. Very fishy, use this app with care!
Not to revive a dead thread, but is there anything like this available for Android? The one thing I don't like on Android is dealing with tickets for flights etc... This doesn't seem to solve it though as it appears to require iOS to generate the pass in the first place.

[Q] No Task Manager?

Maybe i'm blind but can't find any type of HTC task manager on this device? Had it on stock ATT HTC One X+ device. I'm new to Verizon, switched specifically for this device and better deal with service so this is all new to me here.
Just seems odd zero task manager installed at all. Never had to use a third party, any recommendations? Thanks
I see in Settings, App manager, you can scroll right to Running apps and manually tap and stop. Anyway to have these apps NOT become active after a reboot? I'm spoiled and use to root and greenify and what not. Never use apps like Verizon Cloud, Verizon messages, NFL, etc.
Facebook app uses 48mb just for push services? Already have half the ram used up and only using mandatory apps running except Facebook, Messenger, GSam Battery Monitor, AppLock, Dropbox (all except Facebook and Messenger only use maybe 5-10mb each).
Closest I can find is by pressing the recent apps button and clicking the four square icon in the top right. That's typically the most we'll get w/o root apps

Yeah that's a shortcut to what I described. So no matter how many times I turn off, force close, etc the Verizon and Amazon apps they seem to still run on their own. Awesome

Go into settings, apps, all, click on some of the bloat ware and click disable. Removes it from the task manager for me. Also do you have this at the bottom of your apps list? I'm referring to the one with the foreign characters.

I just did that. Basically unchecked notifications and disabled all Verizon, Amazon apps. Going to reboot now and see if they still start up on their own and if there any issues disabling all these? New to this stuff.
Yes I noticed that too just now. Not sure what it is for?

Rebooted and they aren't there. Good one less reason for me to want root.

Same here, not running now after disable and reboot. Whew.
No offense but I can't think of any reason to not want root?

True. I mainly like to hold off as long as I can until I have to root. As much as I like tinkering with Android stuff I always have that time period where I'm not willing to mess with my new$600 phone. After that period I just go flash happy.

Damn well disabling all Verizon bloatware and Amazon crap did something. I have gallery lock lite to hide personal pics/vids from the stock gallery app. I have the pics and vids saved on external sd card from previous device so these are not saved on internal.
Well now they are all visible again in stock gallery app like I never hid them. They also show inside the gallery lock app.
I had vaulty app before which worked great but on this device does not hide stuff. Not sure if it's a kit Kat 4.4.2 thing or what? Seems odd after reboot they are all visible again in gallery app though. Damnit. More reason to root! Can't even have private photos on my sd card, WTH?
Is this you?
