No response. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Phone was working fine this morning, screen flashed and phone vibrated, I went to unlock it, nothing. Tried to power it on, thinking it had powered off, nothing. No response at all. I had just plugged in a MicroUSB to USB adapter with a USB flash drive plugged in when this happened.
No boot to recovery, no boot to download mode. No charging light when plugged into wall or laptop.
Any help?

If I return it to my local store, and ask for a replacement exchange, what are the chances of them finding out it's rooted? If I can't turn it on, can they?

Verizon doesnt give replacement phones in store unless its under 14 days old. You just need to call them and they will next day air a replacement. As for the phone when you plug it in does it show a led light or the battery icon on the screen? Also was the battery extremely low when it went off?

Wasn't aware of that, thanks. This was my first phone to have an issue...
When I plug it in, there is no light. No reaction of any kind. The battery was ~90%, I had taken it off the charger and made a call or two.
P.S. Any chance a USB Jig would be able to get my phone into download mode? Once there, I would have no problem getting to stock and starting from scratch...

TWRP, but I can't get it to boot at all.

does it vibrate?
Last resort would be something called heimdall or something like that. I don't know if it will work but supposedly on older samsung phones it is the ultimate last resort even when odin doesn't work. Just google it and try to find some info.

Doesn't vibrate. Isn't heimdall for Mac?

Just downloaded and ran Heimdall, no recognition of my phone with stock cord or after market cord.
Edit: I guess at this point I just want to make know if there is any way for Verizon to find out my phone is rooted, and the exact process of getting it replaced?

Heimdall wont do anything for you since it connects to the phone the same way odin does, and you still have to be in download mode. If it doesnt vibrate or react in anyway when pluggin it in then its safe to say its dead. You should be safe switching it out as a dead phone with verizon too. You should call them early in the day so the phone will get sent out that day too, if they dont offer to next day air it then tell them you need the phone asap and they will free of charge (you may just need to tell them you need it and you lost all ur data, ect and they will help you out). Sometimes they will say you will receive it in 2-3 days free of charge, which is unacceptable.

Alright, I'm guessing I just ship mine back to them in the same box or...?
Thanks for the help, too.

Ya you will get a replacement phone with no back cover, you keep your sim card and back cover. There will be a shipping label for the return shipping which you can either drop off at a fedex or usps location. You have 5 days to return the bad phone from the day you get the replacement. They will explain everything to you on the phone.

Alright, so I'm really nervous about making this call. If I send it in, and they get it working enough to run their tests, and it comes up rooted, I don't have the money to pay for the phone at full retail price. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? I know a lot of people brick their phones by misfollowing instructions, or flashing things they shouldn't be, but I did neither of which. The phone just shut down, and won't turn back on.
Sending the phone to a 3rd party service is also not possible for me, at this time.
Edit: Just found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981582), which sounds almost exactly like what happened to mine. So I guess my chances should be good of getting a replacement, without any troubles. I tried to find other threads involving people who sent in bricked phone to find their experiences, but I didn't know quite what to search for..

[Q] Please help, bricked Nexus S 4G

I did search, both here and google, and have not come across a similar problem.
I picked up a nexus s 4g recently and unlocked the bootloader using fastboot oem unlock, flashed clockwork mod recovery on, and installed cyanogen 7. I then found out I'm a complete idiot because that rom was made for the GSM phone, and the radio doesn't work.
Tried to use fastboot to load an original rom back on, which failed, so found a windows machine and installed Odin, followed a tutorial on how to flash back to stock, Odin reported a pass, but the phone will no longer turn on.
No amount of taking the battery out, button combos, or charging has changed this.
I had about 70% battery when I tried to flash with Odin, so I'm fairly sure it's not a battery issue.
I also tried to adb devices with the phone hooked up, and nothing was found, so it shouldnt be an unresponsive screen.
Help?
did you make a nand?
I did not. Not sure if it would help, because I can probably download someone elses nand but I don't know how to do anything with it with my phone not powering on
I could be completely wrong about that, not very familiar with nandroid.
You can't get it into download mode?
Correct.
Essentially the phone is dead, it will not respond to anything.
Very similar to the battery not being installed, but I know for certain the battery has a charge.
I just checked the battery, and I retract my previous statements. 560mAh and 3.08 volts. Would that be low to the point of it not taking a charge through the charger?
I have it on a special charger directly on the terminals right now, I will post results once its through.
Read in the fascinate forum that a guy purposely flash a rom from a different device ans used Odin to revert back, also he gave a tip that one should keep trying to use Odin if the first try didn't work. Not sure if this will help never happened to me...

Fully charged battery did not help
Try what they used to suggest with the epic when it was stubborn. Remove the battery. Plug the usb cable into the phone then into the computer. Try to put it into download mode. If that doesn't work, I can't think of anything else. If you have insurance, maybe they'll swap it when they see it's dead for a refurb. Be nice and play dumb. Tell them something like it froze one time and you pulled the battery and after that it wouldn't turn back on.
I could use my insurance, but its $100 bucks now. Sprint really changed their policy on that.
I also don't really want a refurb phone, when mine was NIB 3 days ago. I realize it's my fault but still.

Totally Bricked Charge? Non-responsive

Calling all Android Superheroes!!
I think I've done it. Turned my Charge into a paperweight. Was trying to flash the latest GummyCharged 1.91 package using Odin. It failed 3 times, but having read many accounts of similar failures I retried using different cables, different ports etc. After every "Fail" I unplugged the phone, rebooted, shut down Odin and started all over again.
After the last "Fail" message the phone simply stopped responding to anything. Won't boot, won't go into download mode, won't boot to recovery, doesn't show any sign of life when plugged into the wall.
All my reading about bricked Droids all seem to have some kind of responsiveness so don't seem to apply to my situation.
If anyone has suggestions or can point me in the direction of further resources I can research I'll be most grateful.
The worst part is going to be telling the wife when she asks what I'm doing.....
Thanks in advance for any / all help.
Call verizon tech support and give them some crap about how your phone was powering off by itself and you were dropping 4g, 3g, and 1x consistently and now your phone wont even turn on. They'll surly send you a like-new replacement phone.
I was having odin problems with my Charge as well, every rom failed... I figured out I had to uncheck 'reboot' and keep the battery in to get it to flash right. I know this doesn't really help but its similar

Thanks Sleek. I bought mine through Costco so I think I've also got the option to head back to Costco and get it swapped out. However, I've made my way through life believing that I should never surrender to the challenges presented by technology nor my own stupidity, so I'm pride-bound to at least try to make lemonade out of this situation.

Thanks anoninja - I'll keep those tips handy for the next flash attempt. And there WILL be further attempts....
I had this happen to me on the second day I had my Charge. What happened was, I was flashing what I thought was the latest version of Humble EE4, but it wasn't, it an old .md5 file for my Epic. I didn't even look at the file name, I just looked at the file extension and it would not turn on, wouldn't show that it was charging (no pun), or any sign of life other then the phone would get hot due to something with the battery.
My solution was that I called VZ customer care and said something like, "For some reason my phone will not turn on. I plugged it last night and when I awoke this morning, it will not come on. I tried pulling the battery and it still does nothing. Is there anything you can do to help me?"
So the customer care lady tried to walk me trough a factory/data reset, and you guess it, "it didn't work." After another five minutes or so of her "trying" to help me, she said that they would replace it under the warranty and she overnight-ed me a new phone and I had it the next day. I did have to send the bricked phone back to VZ, so for good measure I ran an electromagnet over it, you know just in case.
You can try it that way or go into the carrier store and play dumb (like you really shouldn't have a smart phone) and have them replace under the warranty.
Good luck!!!
Take out battery, plug into rear usb ports (if you're on a tower. If you're on a laptop it doesn't really matter. If you want to know why just ask, otherwise just do it). Fire up Odin3 with administrative rights (right click, run as admin). Hold down the lower volume button and cross your fingers. If it still won't power up into download mode, your phone has tapped out and needs to be replaced.

Some times the phone looses power during the flashing process even though it's connected to the computer. Keep the battery in the phone while flashing to alleviate this issue.

Do everything he says but odin recovery.tar its in the humble ee4 section. After that reboot phone go to settings, then development, and turn on usb debugging. It took me 2 days to figure this out. Did the same thing. From now on before you odin make sure usb debugging is enabled. Hope this helps.

Just checked that forum and realized recovery.tar is not there. If you want it just pm me and ill email it to you. Its a lifesaver in your situation.
try this;
with battery out, keep the phone unplugged and hold down the volume down button and put the battery back in (not usb cable) and see if your phone responds to download mode this way. If it does, plug the phone in and see if odin now sees your device (with the battery still in).]
This worked for me in a similar situation.
My phone got hosed so bad that Odin would error out.

Is it bricked?

I have a Rogers Skyrocket and I was trying to update CWMR touch.
I tried several times through the terminal emulator and it failed. I must confess, I wasn't being careful this time. My attention was divided as I thought it was business as usual. I tried searching for apps on the Play Store to flash them, but Rom Manager cost a few bucks and Recovery Manager didn't work.
I was going to reboot into download mode to use odin and my attention drifted away. When I looked back at my phone, it was off. I tried turning it on, but no response. I know it had at least half the battery left. I tried a battery pull, but nothing. Plugging into the computer or wall to charge does not initiate the charge.
Is there anyway to fix this?
I'm gonna be honest, it really does sound like a hard brick. Try another battery pull and hold the power button while u reinsert. Any vibration at all means u have hope
Damn. Will Rogers replace it? Or am I going to have to pay for it?

can you get the download mode or the recovery?
if not the i'm pretty sure its hard bricked.
but you might try a jig to force it into download mode.
you can tell rogers it was a failed update by kies, and the will send out a refurb but they will want the broke phone sent back to them oh and i hope that's brand new(less than 30 days)or they might say no.
i got two refurbs out of them this way.

try it and see, if you bought it directly from them i think they just give you a refurbed one on the spot, ok just read previous post, so maybe not on the spot.
or keep it charging for awhile to make sure the battery wasnt dead. once you know the battery has a good charge and still wont boot, do a battery pull for like 10mins, then try, if still nothing then it looks like a hardbrick

yes rogers will replace it but they may charge him a little if the phone is more than 30 days old. he can try to charge that battery as you stated and hope for the best.
i can give him link to a good jtageer 50.00 is what he charges, if indeed the phone be bricked.
i bricked mine and it would vibrate but nothing would happen.
your only hope is to try download mode.
i thought i bricked the other day it would show the i727 screen then turn off. but i could get into download mode.
Unless battery meter was wrong or there was a massive drain in power within a few minutes, then the battery shouldn't be dead. I did flash CM9 nightly last night coming from official Rogers ICS if that has anything to do with messing up battery stats.
In regards to the 30 day thing, my wife bought me the phone several months ago. I don't think I bought an extended warranty either.
What is this jig/jtag thing? I remember reading something about it a while back when I was using the HTC Dream.

a jtag is needed if there is no bootloader on the phone. no bootloader means a dead mobo black screen no recovery or download mode also jig wont work = dead mobo and jtag is required.
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-jtag-brick-repair/
if you are interested in getting it jtaged.
also rogers will charge you a little to replace the phone but not much.
ohh forgot, a jig is a loop used to short 2 pins in the usb port to force the download mode.

full replacement if under 30 days otherwise a nominal fee will be required because it is software related not a hardware fail.
they will send him the phone but when they get the old one back and run ther tests thats when the fee will come in.
also the playing stupid trick might work as they will not even bother to check the phone but they might and he will get dinged.
i'm sure if he sends the phone in rogers will just send him a refurb rogers is pretty relaxed when it comes to customer service as i stated before i got two refurbs easy enough.
i sent my hard brick in 3 months after and they fixed it for free and checked it off as a faulty pcb. they just replaced the pcb and sent it back

well im sure with you phone it would be because the mobo is dead but if it were a smashed screen or something like that i don't know as i stated my two refurbs had previous owners **** on it.
Should I even bother trying to get my phone fixed with a jtagger? I prefer to keep my phone than swap for a refurb.

My Galaxy S3 just died without explanation (resolved)

Welp,
There's no doubt in my mind that my Galaxy S3 just hard bricked
Looking for some advice on what to do.
I've had the phone for 20 days, I've been running Beans Custom Stock ROM Build 10 for over a week I think?
And this is how it happened:
I started sending a few texts to one of my brothers, with "Go SMS" , and my phone around the time I hit send decided to switch to 4G (which it hardly does because it's only 1-2 bars where I am) , I then went into the basement and my phone then went to show 0 bars of 4G, then looked like it was going to switch to 3G but then the SMS application hung. I tried closing it, but it wouldn't, so I held down the power button and as the boot menu was coming up, that hung, so I pulled down the notifications bar and tried shutting off data, but then that hung. So, I had no choice but to pull the battery.
I left the battery out for a little while and then put it back in. Held the power button, and the device hung on the "Samsung Galaxy S III" first boot screen. I pulled the battery again and waited for a really long while and took my Micro SDXC out.
Tried to boot but power button does nothing. There's no signs off life!
Plugging it into a wall charger does nothing and I'm sure there's still charge in the battery because when it died it was around 20-30%.
Only sign of life I can get is when I plug it into my PC and then put the battery in. THE RED LIGHT TURNS ON.
:crying:
I have no idea what caused this, and I have no idea what to do!
Will Verizon cover this since it bricked without question and it's been under 30 days?
Or maybe Samsung will cover it?
Or because I rooted, I pretty much screwed myself?
I've never had anything like this happen before so I'm stumped...................HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I used to love my S III but now it's just a really nice paperweight.............. :crying:
I guess this is an option also: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-jtag-brick-repair/

But I've had it for 20 days now and their website says they don't allow returns or replacements after 14 days. Or is this different because it randomly died?
Also. I don't get insurance on my phones because they always would charge me $10 or more a month and then when the phone died they would charge half the cost of the phone just to get it replaced!
Honestly I think I may just send it to MobileTechVideos.........
Unless I still have a chance with Verizon. Hard decision............
I'm pretty sure the 14 day timeframe is for refunds on the purchase. Most electronics have some sort of manufacturer's warranty.
Have you tried to get it into download mode? volume down, then home, then power, Hold them all together until it boots into download mode? Do this while plugged in maybe?

Haha. Thanks!
Well, I ended up making a Google Voice account since my phone is dead and I called Verizon customer service. The first lady started having me go through the usual checklist like most companies do, I very nicely let her know that I've tried it all and I indeed know it's dead without explanation. She then sent me to someone higher up, we talked very briefly and she said it's covered under the manufacturer warranty, they're sending me a replacement for free. Only thing I paid for was a $12 upgrade to 1-day shipping!
I seriously was freaked out that I wasn't going to be able to get this replaced. Thankfully I can!
So, I guess, some advice to people that have hard bricked Galaxy S IIIs, CALL VERIZON BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!
Thanks for the suggestions and help guys!
It's crazy how deep the brick went, the phone wouldn't even charge! Maybe I got a lemon? I hadn't even dropped or scratched it and I had 0 problems with unlocking/rooting it. I swear it was it hanging on trying to switch from 4G to 3G that killed it. Either way, stress is gone! phew! :fingers-crossed:

It's hard bricked. Will not charge, no booting, and download or recovery mode won't work. Will not show any indication of life except for plugging it into a power source without the battery and then putting the battery in. If the red light comes on when you do that, it means it's hard bricked? Correct me if I'm wrong?

If you can't get into download mode then yea, most likely I guess or the battery died. I just didn't see that you said you tried to get into download mode.

Glad you got this fixed! Also i think its a 30 day replacement or swap for another phone if you don't like it. Thats what i was told when i got mine.

[Q] Phone Not Opening (What Happened?)

i just got at&t sgs2 skyrocket phone 4 days ago online, from someone i dont know,... for 3 days it worked, camera works, wifi works, i downloaded like 5 games already from google play.
then after 3 days, i restarted it, then it didnt turn ON, there was nothing. i didnt root or installed any kind of 3rd party software.
before my phone was screwed. i tried to update it via Kies, kies was always saying "the phone is not supported"
- i tried to remove battery and plug in back, no change, not working.
- i connected the charging cable, still, there is nothing in the screen, NOT EVEN CHARGING ICON.
- there is no vibration or light at all.
so do you guys think that the guy, from i bought the phone, installed a custom software in it?
and if you pls post a solution, that would be helpful.
i cant find usb jig in stores here, do i have to buy it online only? no other option?
3 day curse?
Haha I guess Ursula ( the witch) put a 3 day curse on you phone, that if you don't educate yourself by the dawn of the third day ... your phone will forever become a crippled rabbit. So a USB Jig is helpful and it puts your phone into the download mode, but have you already tried putting your phone into the download mode? (pull the battery, put it back in without turning the phone on yet, WHILE holding the 2 up+down volume keys plug the usb cable into the computer and keep holding those 2 buttons)
Have the proper Drivers installed, have Odin and stock ROM ready to go.
If you after you reading this you feel like WTF is this guy talking about, it means you need to go read Vincom's thread and see what other did.
Search and educate yourself knowing that if you do something to your phone by trial/error, there is always that one error that sets you so far back you wish you took the time to make sense out of things.
After you do your research ask questions like" this is my problem, this is what I based on my research think I should do, what do you guys think?"
Cheers,
Wtf? But you're on the right track.
OP, look for vincom's stickies in the development forum. Read them carefully.

Oh boy! I've had one of those. If you can't get it into download mode (volup+down and then plug in the usb), then you might try a jig from ebay for like $2 or so. That puts it in download mode as well.
Other than that it might be an emmc failure ( the memory chip/internal SD or equivalent to your computer's hard drive/ssd), which again the guys that perform a JTAG repair will be able to diagnose that and offer you some repair options.
Check your messages I'm gonna send you a link ... this guy Josh from MobileTechVideos help me get mine fixed.
Good Luck,
if your battery is charged, it is charged right, and you get no signs of life when depressing power button even w/the cable plugged in(even try keeping the power button depressed for more than 10 sec's) then its either hardbricked or hardware failure, you need to get it professionally fixed.
even with no battery installed but w/the cable plugged in you should get a vibration every few seconds
yep, no vibration at all even with cable plugged in.
now im 99% sure its hard bricked
but my question remains:
it was working fine for 3 days, i installed some games from google play, then i sleep, then i woke up, it wont turn ON, how come?
i didnt installed any custom software in it.
Yes my wife's i777 galaxy s ii did the exact same thing. Gone all of a sudden without any prior notice.
Turned out it was an emmc failure, but rule out all the other odds first.
