I use airdroid for fast copying off my phone or to my phone when I don't want to plug in. It's also great for sending long text messages as you can message right from any browser. Setup port forwarding and you can check your messages, phone log, etc if you leave your phone at home and you're out. You can download apk's that are installed on your phone, manage your music, photos, everything very easily.
I've been using the app lately. I think you might not even need to use port forwarding if you go through the airdroid website, but that means that you'd need the unique password displayed on the screen to log in.
It also allows you to scan a qr code to authenticate which wouldn't work for remote logins, but still handy.

If you pick up the v2 beta you can login from another network. It also has tracking and camera functions. Android Police has a story on it.
It is quite useful actually... Its not as fast as a USB but hey, if you don't want to spend the time taking our the USB and plugging it in, its extremely useful. I use it quite a lot

Could be. Depends on how strong of a wifi signal you have, if it's an N router, if you're plugged into a USB 1 or 2 port, and how saturated your USB controller is with other things.
In theory, wifi n is faster than usb 2, but in real life it's not normally, but depends on the things I said above.
This app is great. Also, I find it being faster than USB and less troublesome.
I transferred a about 3GB without getting desperate. So, yeah, that's fast.

Hello all, I am in contact with Supercurio on how to allow for Voodoo sound to be implemented. As of now there isn't enough info for Supercurio to add the required modifications to enable it.
He asked me for three things that are needed for him to study the sound interaction with the system
1. Rooted Phone
2. ADB wireless Widget app
3. Open port for him to connect from his location to my phone
I'm having trouble opening a port to allow him to remotely access my phone through adb wireless.
Is there anyone willing to let him do the same with their phone or can someone help me open a port from my router to allow him to connect.
what you need: TCP public ip:5555 -> phone internal ip:5555 (This is where I'm having trouble)
Google how to open a port on your router, that would be the easiest thing to do

I've tried, that's why I'm reaching out to the XDA community. I can't seem to open any port. Information on how to do so just for a phone is proving more difficult. I'm using Netgear WNDR3700. I've failed about 20 times since yesterday to open a port.

What's he after? If he's trying to figure out what the sound chip is, it would appear to be a Wolfson 8994. He will find out quite a bit more by pulling the kernel source which LG has posted.
He'll also find that the driver setup is really, really weird. The "sound driver", for example, is little more than a shell which allows register access from the NVRM process, which is proprietary.
So if he wants to apply his magic to the sound driver, it's going to be tough. And maybe not possible (not sure how the sound chip handles routing between it and the RIL, for example.)
But I haven't spent a lot of time in this stuff, maybe I have it wrong.
I have my phone set up and sent him a PM to hit me up and gtalk when he's ready.

If you're doing everything over your cell network I wouldn't worry about it. If you're connected to wifi at your work and the sites aren't blocked, then don't worry about it either.
Now, if it violates your workplace policy to be using your phone in the first place well that's another story.

Only if they knew your phones MAC addy, or they if they could deduce who's phone was connected just by looking at who carries what. It would kind of depend on the size of the network and who was paying attention.
My G2x shows up on my router with android_70062d507xxxxxxx for a host name, If I were the only client on the router with an Android device I'd definitely be found out. I would think that with any reasonably sized employer there would be many Android phones.
Of course if you're doing anything seriously wrong none of this applies, an investigation would go to a whole 'nuther level.
EDIT: If an IT person helped set you up or if you had to request access from your phone then you are probably being watched, but if you just connected yourself to the router from a shared password then you are probably somewhat safe.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

Either of those scenarios you just mentioned are great, but voice commands w/ S Voice would be more useful (if it can even do this - I know Google Now can get me this info from my phone, but S Voice on the Gear currently just comes back and says "sorry, we couldn't find the answer to your question".
Also, if your hands are full, what makes you think that opening up and typing a web address on the watch's little screen will be "hands free"? You can't even interact with the watch without touching it with your other hand.

How would you navigate an app or browser without using you hands/fingers? Your football score scenario is already accomplished via ESPNs Score Center app. It can be configured to send notifications based on team preferences (i.e. notify of scoring plays during your fav team games).
And now that I think about it, if only the Google Maps app could be configured to send turn-by-turn notifications, we would sort of have GPS on our Gears.

oh I forgot about the turn by turn functionality - Pebbles can do this, even though I never got a chance to use it since my phone is mounted on my dashboard. Would be useful when walking in a city, though - without keeping your phone out. The problem of course is the watchscreen turns off again and you have to touch the watch and navigate to the app again to see the next direction.

Yep, and shortly after I posted this I came up with an article about that Pebble feature... however, it seems it is limited to the iOS version of Google Maps because it is able to send normal push notifications for each turn.
i have been toying with this idea for the last few years. neptune suite had this concept to run android from a smart watch onto "dumb" screens. would there be a way to use LTE to run a OS from a home server? if the speeds wouldnt be fast enough would doing it locally be possible? would it need 5g speeds?
the reason behind this is the low life expectancy behind phones today. this could be a possible solution to run android on a computer/server that you can upgrade over time. it will host the os to any "dumb" screens.
im more curious if anyone knows if this is possible technically.
Thanks!

I can't really see it being that feasible without upgrading to a newer phone as time goes by. Mobile hardware/software evolves faster than PC these days. After a few years, a mobile device can't keep up, even with the setup you are looking for because in the end, you're still trying to do everything from a mobile device, no matter how you loop it, you're still on dated mobile hardware.
