Hi all, my son has been given a G-Tab 2.7 P 3110 (UK) (OTA'd to JB) which he wants me to root. (He's seen my rooted galaxy W phone and thinks it's "cool" )
I've searched this forum and found several references to rooting, but the instructions all involve Odin. I had a bad time with Odin when I rooted my phone, and I REALLY don't want to go there again.....
In the end, I asked for help here on XDA and was pointed in the direction of a rooting method that involved nothing more difficult than flashing a downloaded zip from the STOCK recovery......
Does such a method exist for the P 3110? If it does, can somebody please link me to the thread.....many thanks

Thanks for your reply janjannsen99, but the first line of instruction says "Odin"... and as I mentioned in my op, I REALLY want to stay away from Odin if I can....

Yea but you only use odin to flash RECOVERY. Root access is gained by flashing a .zip IN recovery. Its a .zip file. No odin needed to get root access. Now if you dont have a custom recovery then you just might have to use odin to get a custom recovery image on the phone.
There just isnt really a way around it. You might be able to use an app on the play store called mobile odin to flash the recovery to your device. It works quite well. Try that out if you dont want to flash with odin on a computer.
Hope that helps!
Ahh OK fella...thanks for clearing that up.....doesn't sound too complex....I'll give it a go.....

Better go for cf auto root method.
As with the method in above tutorial some peoples are getting no root access problems.

OK thanks......when I rooted my phone, I managed it (Odin aside) successfully first time, so I didn't have to worry about the following.........
If I try the CF method and it doesn't work, will it be safe to try another method, or will the CF method have made some changes that might interfere with a different method?......

I had read on the infuse 4G board that someone had downloaded and rooted their phone with free software from www,unlockroot.com . I downloaded the software, and can confirm that I rooted my daugthers Infuse 4G with the downloaded PC software.
Have not tried it on the tab 2 as of yet - because the CF Root process is so simple, yes - with Odin - but oh, so simple
just offering a different option to look into - if you do not want to use Odin
Good luck

OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.
I have tried every root method it says its done but i check my phone and there is no root. What have I been doing wrong? What should I be doing instead?

It's very simple, man. Use odin to flash CWM. Place Superuser zip on SD card. Boot into cwm and flash SU until it takes. Done, rooted.

Start there
ok read the first one and understood it pretty good , the 2nd link had alot of stuff in it that was a little confusing. this **** is way over my head. like i said i tried superone click on this stock gingerbread rom and it wouldnt get past step 7 so i guess i got alot more reading to do so i dont brick this thing.
Simplicity at it's best
The Infuse 4g is one of the simplest phone's to learn on in my book as far as rooting and changing rom's lot's of great rom's out there , If you really won't to get it done check out the Android Development section here on XDA for rooting , or How too it's pretty simple , you can even flash rooted rom's via Odin to save time in rooting it yourself , pretty easy , be glad to help ya out if ya need a few pointer's here and there , lot's of great people here on XDA that helped me out of the hard spot's , but good luck bro
thank you so much, i am gonna give it a shot this weekend. one question though i put a app backup on my phone so i wouldnt lose my cerberus app. after i do a wipe will i be able to get my app back. i know that sounds stupid but just curious.

You can read the ISET page it may be overwhelming but there is lots of information, and knowledge is good....start with the newbie info so you understand the lingo and info being provided...there are some many great ROM's in our threads.
I would not take the journey on putting ICS/CM9/AOKP till you get you feet settled in to knowing how to flash...start with some the great Gingerbread ROM's, we have custom and very custom ROM's, we have the stock look but still keeping the custom style...
Your choice and what you decide there is plenty of help in these threads, but don't be afraid to ask, but then ensure you have done some research and homework on your own...read, read and re read....
And if ya just cant figure it out, you can pm me...or post in my ISET thread ok,

Correction...the easiest way to root your phone is using qksters heimdal package of entropys latest kernel...deletes nothing on the phone only replaces the kernel with a rooted one
Download it (look in ISET page)
Run program
Put phone in download mode
Press flash
Let it do its thing, your phone will reboot and you will be rooted with cwm recovery (used for flashing roms)
*download mode required for both Odin and heimdal*
How to get into download mode?
1) pull battery
2) place battery back in
3) press and hold volume button simultaneously-don't let go and don't touch power button
4) while holding volume keys plug your phone into PC with USB cord
5) you should now be in download mode
You should see either a yellow triangle that says downloading or an option to go to download mode or reboot
Also Odin requires drivers from kies heimdal does not...it uses its own drivers which it will install for you...

Odin vs. Heimdall one click will always be a matter of preference. In my case, I prefer the Heimdall command line because it gives me more control. I used it when I made the rooted Odin packages. As for which is easier, qkster's sweet Heimdall one click packages or the rooted Odin packs - they're both just about as easy as it gets, because we've already done most of the work for you.

Bigjoe, looks like the OP was wanting advice on how to get UCLB3 rooted and ready to flash roms (CWM recovery, etc.). So far, other than the back and forth about who prefers one method over the other, it seems that this thread is on track to answer those questions. The good thing about the Infuse forum lately is that there are many ways to do things. To the OP: Get in there, explore the different methods and roms, and have fun. Good news is that it's really hard to brick this phone, so it's a good platform to try all that is out there. Bigjoe gave you a good start by pointing you to the ISET and Super Noobie Question thread.

A lot of reading is neede when trying to flash custom roms on any phone.
I think you better had done everything by yourself in recovery (step by step), so no mistake can be made that way.
Maybe you can get some help in Galaxy Mini section.
I guess you cant even power it in download mode?

I honestly don't think he was rooted, or had a custom recovery.
You must flash the tass.ops file via odin ( computer program ) and then download and install ( again via odin ) the stock or a custom rom.
WARNING: To successfully unbrick your galaxy mini, you must have the odin for samsung galaxy mini GT-S5570. Odin for other devices will probably destroy your device at all.
If you want links and more instructions, you can sent me a pm.

You need to flash a stock rom using ODIN, no need to take it to any service if it boots into download mode.

I don't know how is he going to flash tass.ops with odin, and then separately flash a stock rom...
Last I checked, you couldn't flash an odin partition script by itself, since that script is for odin's use on the phone and not for the phone itself...
Is it different for mini?
Typed using a small touchscreen
I think Sgmaster meant to load .ops file and then, flash the stock rom.
For SGS+ is ariesve.ops, I flashed with odin a few times...
Right this. First load the tass.ops file via odin and then flash a rom throught odin or clockworkmod recovery mode.
If I helped be sure to press THANKS button.

Always read the threads first if not a vid is even better
*sigh*
This is why articles shouldn't say, "IT'S SO EASY, ANYONE CAN DO IT!"
No, it's not. It's easy to f*ck up and brick your phone is what it is. Don't even bother joining XDA if you don't have the patience to read. Nowadays all we get are people who join after messing up their phones, begging us to perform some over-the-internet sorcery to fix it. We're not magicians. We're people. We don't exist to serve you. We have lives.

Thats why no matter what, Im still on Stock Froyo.
I'm not saying don't root. It's not hard to root, but it is easy to brick your phone. By brick, I mean permanently. As long as you have recovery mode or download mode, you're good. But my point is read, read, read before you even download a ROM.
I did successfully root my fine no problems, and read about ROM's but, think I should have read more before attempting.
I`m guilty of getting misty eyed over the thought of something new and flashy not seen before.
I have been on here a while reading, not posting and i think i`ll check out here before attempting again.
anyway I wimped out and sent it back to Samsung to be repaired under its warranty, I know I could probably fix it with the help of you guys, but if I dont need to have the hassle.
But, if I was to recover myself I know you have said use odin I have downloaded it and had a look. Would I load the software then attempt to turn it on with the Home, down volume, and on buttons it should then boot into recovery mode. Is that correct?
Thanks All for your time
Can anyone help me figure out how to build a root_signed.zip flashable from stock recovery? There are a few reasons why:
1) I have the US wifi version (UEALI3 build) for which there is no root injected rom
2) people have reported problems (losing s-pen functionality, boot-loops, increasing flash counter, etc)
3) I have no computer from which to flash CWM via odin
4) general development practice
5) if you want something done right you've got to do it yourself....
I'm guessing the reason this has yet to be done is because the signature verification process is complex and the current rooting methods suffice for most people.
Any ideas? Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
you wouldn't be able to flash a root injected rom without a computer anyway...i suggest you just borrow someone's computer and use the CWM method lol

I have UEALI3 build and I'm fully rooted using method 2 (CWM via Odin) from the dev thread.
The flash counter increase I solved using triangle away...
Oh and CWM doesn't take properly with this method. You gotta trick it into working.

All the more reason to develop a new root method.

I agree. Not to sound like a bastard, but I'm sure the devs share your viewpoint...
Of course I applaud you desire to learn, can't have too many people working on this.
Why not PM one of the devs from the development thread?
I should mention that using TWRP touch recovery makes things easier.
