[Q] Screen went black, all lights work but screen? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

The screen on my phone is black. There is a small crack on the bottom of the screen, but barely visible. I didn't notice it until I took the screen protector off, and who knows how long it has been there. I have dropped my phone a few times without the case. But the LED lights work, the two touch buttons on either side of the home key light up, I still hear my ringtone when I get calls, text messages, emails etc. I can still charge it and it still "sounds" fine, my screen is just black, I can't answer the calls, the phone can't pick up my fingers touching it. So Its kind of a mixture of these two problems. I have heard of other people having problems with this phone so I was wondering if there was any thing I could do at home before I buy anything. If not, then I'm thinking of buying a replacement screen but I don't know what I need exactly and just want some advice.
Any responses will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Sounds like your digitizer and screen are broken. It's pretty expensive to replace, so hopefully you have insurance. If you would like to use your phone or backup your contacts etc before fixing it, I recommend downloading Moborobo (CNET has a safe DL link) and connecting your phone to your computer via usb. You can use some of the features in your phone even though the screen/digitizer is broken. Good luck!

Screen Turned black

so i dropped my touch pro, and the battery was still in place, i checked my phone and the screen was black, i tried taking the battery off, resetting it and nothing.. i was wondering if theres anyway to get it to work..i can still recieve calls and get texts, but obviously cant read them :/
ok , now the phone turns on and everything (still black) and i can hear the voicemail "ringtone" but now it doesn't even wanna receive calls, they go straight to voicemail, and before i was able to make calls by using the qwerty and hitting the green button but now it doesn't even do that?.. any suggestions?
If it ain't under any warranty/insurance best thing to do is try popping it open, and reseating everything. Possible a ribbon cable popped out. Worse scenario is the board inside cracked or a chip popped out. With a little searching here and on Bing you can find seceral service manuals for our device. Good luck! I've never done it myself.

Screen wont turn off when in a call...

My Shift is not shutting off the screen like it should while in a call. I am sure this is draining my battery quicker as well as being annoying when I hit mute, speaker, or hang up with my face. Any idea what my issue might be?
Phone is stock:
Android Version
2.3.3
HTC Sense Version
2.1
Home screen widgets and icons...
Sense Clock with weather
People, WiFi, Battery (HTC Widget), Voicemail
Messages, Market, Flashlight, Camera
laid out in that order from top to bottom, left to right. I have only one other widget on another screen for Player Pro. Running Lookout.
Download "proximity sensor finder" from the market.
And once opened you should see it say 9.0cm. cover your finger over the proximity sensor (little circle to the left of speaker grill) and that number should change to a 0...
if it doesnt you need to take your phone to sprint
I guess it is broken. I covered it and it did nothing. It messed up a few times where it would work a little, then come back on now the screen is on all the time. I have resorted to pushing the power button while in a call to turn the screen off. Does the same thing I guess but it really doesn't matter much. I think I am going to get the Photon soon.
Thanks for the tip on the app. I think I will use it in the future.

No problem,
Although since that is just a defect that came with the phone, Sprint will replace that for free, without any problems.
(and tell/show them the apps responses if they do, they cant deny proof )
Just make sure you run the RUU beforehand if you do take it in and your rooted (but you said your on stock 2.3 so im assuming your not anyway)
Nope, all stock... I will look into returning it... it is a good phone and wouldn't mind it as a back-up phone.
Bump...
I still have my EVO Shift and the day before yesterday I did something to my phone to try and fix my led issue. It wasn't a major problem with it but something was obstructing the led making it hard to see when I got notifications. Well It started by me using a fine bristled brush to clean the little mesh earpiece screen with to clean over the led... it started to work and then made it worse. I then decided to just remove the mesh screen. I pried it out as gently as I could which made it easy to clean the obstruction from the led but as a very welcome side affect it also fixed my proximity sensor!!! The phone now functions fully again. So to all those willing to try it if your sensor is "broken" try removing the metal mesh part of the earpiece... just be very careful.

Screen not displaying

My HTC Sensation wont turn on... properly.
When booting, i get a black screen. Around the edge of the screen i can see the backlight is on both when just on the battery as well as while plugged in, but i get nothing displayed, just ablack screen. It vibrates like normal when i power on, but nothing, black screen.
I do not belive this is software related however, because for all intents and purposes, the phone is booting just fine. However, nothing gets displayed to the screen.
For instance, when i call it from a different phone, it rings... and because i know where the buttons "should be" i swipe to answer the phone as i would normally, and it answers the phone, and i can hear and use the phone just fine. But again, NOTHING is displayed on the screen, i can only answer the phone, because my fingers know where to touch and slide to answer the phone.
Also, when i boot with VOLDOWN, i get nothing. So it doesnt appear to be a software issue, at least from what i can gather.
Im at a complete loss here, and really have no clue. I am very laman when it comes to hardware. I have opened it up (removed the tiny "void" sticker from a screw head, removed 6 screws, removed the lastic backplate (not the battery cover, the plastic plate that holds the battery), and just generally took a look at it. I really dont know what im doing here, so i havnt really done much further than this. Everything "LOOKS" okay, nothing seems out of place, broken, wires are all attached, it looks fine from what i can tell.
Theres no moisture, theres no residue, there what i couldnt consider excessive dirt or dust or debri (at least anything i wouldnt ocnsider normal after hivng the phone a year or whatever).... so im really at a loss here, and not sure what it could be.
Hoping maybe someone else ran into this problem and has had it resolved... but "search" and "google" hasnt turned anything up..Any help would be appreciate... Thank you in advance.
I just noticed, when i take the battery, an di simply make contact with the contacts, the backlight (the dim light around the edge of the screen, i assuming its the backlight) lights up. Pull the battery, nothing, toch the battery to the contacts, backlight turns on.... without ever pressing the phones power button or nothing. I do not remember this being the case before, and i would assume this would not be normal operation. With the phone not turned on at all (coming from a fresh battery pull), i just touch the battery to the contacts, or put the battery in, the phones backlight i wouldnt think, should come on and stay on like it is, no?
I had similar issue after my phone fell down face on. Had to replace the display unit to get resolved.

Touch Screen working but backlight is really dim! HELP!:(

So, a few days ago i received my xperia arc s housing in the mail from ebay, So the next thing i do is replace the housing and put it back together, Its all working but i notice the back button not working, open the phone up again and mess around a bit while the battery was still in the phone, but then the screen stopped working, and i just put it back together cause i couldn't do anything about it. The touch screen works but it doesn't not display anything, i can start up the phone and unlock the screen and feel the vibrations but the display is really dim, like if i take a flashlight and put it over the screen, i can see everything but when i take the flashlight away i cant see anything, The LEDs near in the home buttons are not working either. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thank You

Screen randomly turns off but phone still on, backlight often stays on

Hey guys, i'll try to explain the situation as best i can below, hopefully someone can work out what is wrong.
My phone is about 16 months old. About 2 months ago i dropped it twice within the space of a couple weeks. There were a few cracks along the screen, however it wasn't very noticeable and i wasn't going to bother having it fixed. The problem started a couple of weeks ago when i went to grab it out of my pocket, however i found out the screen was black and it wouldn't turn on. I don't really know how to describe it but it was acting very strange...
- The screen would have white/gray bars all over it then turn off, then it would do the same with very thin vertical lines that were white/gray/other colours...
- When i get the screen on, it generally turns off again within 30 seconds, however it can stay on for a few minutes.
- If the screen is on and i press the lock button, it almost certainly won't come back on.
- Restarting the phone or holding the power and volume button nearly always gets the screen to come back on. It often then restarts but turns off again shortly after.
- The phone is otherwise still working when the screen goes off; the notification light stays on and i hear messages etc coming through
- The backlight often stays lit, revealing a gray screen opposed from total black. Sometimes it does not stay lit however.
- When the screen came on it was often unresponsive to touch
I had the screen replaced yesterday by a phone repair shop and the phone is still not right. I have factory reset the phone and also wiped the partition cache. Other than that it is still not working. IT seems to be working better... The screen always seems responsive to touch when it is on, and it doesn't seem to be turning off as often. It generally starts up and works fine when i start up by holding the power button and down volume button together... However even still it sometimes just flashes up with a few thick white/gray and black lines on the screen..
Does anyone know what can be causing this and how i can resolve it? If you need any more information please let me know and i will try provide it. I could try get some pictures of what the screen is doing when i finish work. Thanks guys, i appreciate any input.
EDIT: I managed to get a pic of what i mean by the thin vertical lines all over the screen. This just appeared when i tried to restart the phone after it the screen had once again stopped working. The imgur link is gIFMGD6
Anyone have any ideas?
Hey, did you ever figure this problem out? My phone just started doing the same thing. Can't find much info about it.

Yeah, i had the screen fixed hoping it would fix it, however that didn't work. Turns out it was the motherboard, don't know what was wrong with it in particular other than it was simply going faulty. Had someone replace the motherboard on it for $50 and have had zero problems since! Hope that helps you.
Thanks for the response. I tried replacing the screen too with no luck. Unfortunately the same place that replaced the screen said it would cost $400 to replace the motherboard!!! The phone cost less than that so it looks like I'm gonna buy a new one.
