Teacher looking for opinion on note - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I have done nothing but read up on the Nexus 10 and the note. I'm a fifth grade special ed teacher and documenting is a huge part of my job . On a daily basis I have to record observations on trials of students goals during class. . .
Another part of my job could be using this tablet to have a station where students could use the tablet to do an educational app or to write or draw to show me they understand something.
As a teacher and as a special ed teacher I am constantly in meetings on students and need to be able to keep a tight schedule and take notes during meetings.
Lastly I am also taking graduate classes and am constantly asked to read and what not.
I would love to hear an unbiased opinion or as unbiased as possible on if the Nexus 10 could function for me. For example how does a stylus work well taking notes on a Nexus, is it realistic to think you could use the onscreen keyboard to take notes . I would love to hear opinions on all of this and I thank you in advance.
I love devices and definitely appreciate them, it's hard to ignore the specs and stuff of the Nexus 10 ...

I have not used a nexus but I can tell you for sure then no other android tablet will come even close to Note when you are using for task dependent to stylus which include note taking
believe m it is the best if you are using it for note taking and similar task....

It could work but not nearly as well. I owned the nexus 10 for a while but sold it within a week of playing with a note because I realized how perfect it was for me as a student.

One thing you may want to consider is as a teacher if you video/voice record/take notes, pictures ect. you may want to push these things to an sd card. Storage room can become a factor, you may also want to organize things in specific ways on seperate cards. The nexus does not have an sd slot however the note 10.1 does. There is nothing on the market including the dell xt3 tablet pc which I own a few of, that can beat the stylus on the note although palm rejection works better on xt3 but it runs about 2 grand.

Yea definitely could be an issue. . Especially if I'm consistently saving pictures of student work

I know the , " pure android" enthusiasts will disagree however, I appreciate all the little extras that touch wiz adds. don't forget split screen abilities and floating apps. throw in the formula recognition with the wolfram database. all the nexus 10 has over the note 10.1. is a power/cpu hungry, albeit, gorgeous display. a chapter price tag, and more timely updates. IMO.

Well I used to be one of those pure guys when I was stuck on early ginger bread in my droid x. But I have a Samsung s3 and no matter what room I install I always come back to a clean touch whiz Rom.I really like both experiences but I have loved tw compared to old moto blur

I'm a student and my note is perfect for notes, documents and stuff like that
Also the multiwindow function makes getting info from the browser and writing it down or any other apply to that fact so effortless

So like i said if you are looking at task such as note taking and other related to that then nothing will beat note

Another reason you might prefer the Samsung model over Nexus is the S-Note app, you can launch it fast with a double tap using the S-Pen and you can integrate the student's work into special folders that you sync with Google Docs. It let's you integrate voice and photos and I believe the latest version allows video as well.

Nice that's what I'm talking about. Good info. All of it

I was initially just looking for an android tablet. I purchased a little before the Nexus 10 was out, but expected it to be coming soon. The note's screen res put me off, but the sdcard, ram etc appealed to me.
I have no regrets just for that functionality.
However the big surprise I got was the "s-pen". I never thought I'd use it much but now it's used constantly on my device for note talking. I take it to personal appointments (bank, estate agents), for a snag list (sorting out property to sell), taking notes on phone calls (every day at work), same in face to face meetings. It's purely phenomenal and really does REPLACE paper and pen, something an app with a tablet keyboard just can't manage.
With your starting point being that taking notes is a core function I'd strongly urge going with the note....

Bought it.just had my first day at shoo with it.used it for meetings and loved it once I worked it out. I'm still learning the little nuances and just ordered a case.. thanks for all the help guys

welcome to the club! enjoy!

I'm a teacher too.
I bought the GNote 10.1 on september and I'm still learning about it for its better usage.
I really think that it has a huge potential (especially for teaching).
Main points are
The S-Pen: to take handwritten notes and to plan your lessons with charts, diagrams and graphs.
AllShare Cast Dongle: to use the tablet as a whiteboard and project its content wirelessly on a screen.
The only negative side I see is that many apps are not yet fully well designed to exploit the tablet potentiality (i.e. SNote has many good features but it also misses some relevant points like selecting and moving part of the handwritten ink)
Anyhow I'm convinced that the GNote 10.1 is the way to go (for now) and I hope it will become sort of a standard for any future high level tablet.
Then, developers will soon improve and adapt their apps to this new standard accordingly.

For those not satisfied with S-Note have a look at Lecture Notes (which also supports voice recording in the pro version) as well as Myscript Notes Mobile (in the Samsung app store) which is capable to immediately transcript handwritten text into typed text.
With the Note 10.1, I do not need paper anymore and sensitive data can be put on an USB stick or I use EDS with Truecrypt compatible crypto containers (even mountable with a rooted tablet in the pro version).

I use it all the time
As a teacher, I hook it up with the SMARTboard via a HDMI adapter, use it for diagrams to illustrate things to students in s-note during intervention. I can even access SIMS and take the register there easily because of the s pen. I definitely recommend it. I'm not the only teacher in my department who uses it either.

Well I just finished my first year with it. I thought it was really helpful for both classes and my teaching. I used it a lot when doing fractions and when white boards were not available the kids seemed to love it. It was cool being able to make equal and fraction bars that the kids could use. I also got use to taking pictures of assignments and assessments I would also find things like fry words list and take a screenshot then have the student read the list and check it off as they go then just hit Save and use that as a trial. I thought it was really cool hopefully next year I will be even more used to it and we'll be able to document student progress better.

Although it isn't here yet the Samsung Ativ Q looks to me like it could be a teacher's ultimate device.

Future dev support?

Just a quick question: does someone has an idea about the dev support this tablet is going to get? I mean, it's a pretty sweet specced tablet, but it's kinda expensive and serves a niche market (artists, note taking students,...). I want to buy this thing for taking notes during lessons, but I don't like touchwiz at all, so it kinda depends on the the dev support or am i better off with a cheaper tablet and a capacitive screen stylus?
Hi.. I used a Tab 10.1 with a capacitive stylus... but even with TouchScreenTune, that's a more or less working solution.
As soon as I heard from the Note 10.1, my decision was clear that I will buy that one as soon as it is available (and I did).
The capacitive stylus requires TouchScreenTune (really worth its money for this purpose), but writing with the stylus is more or less efficient, there is no handwriting recognition and you keep the "palm on the screen" problem. The palm detection of TouchScreenTune is ok, but that's all not comparable with the S-Pen.
When inside the range of the screen, the S-Pen allows to simply disable input from the capacitive screen (which can explain some reports regarding a non-responsive table to finger input . The precision is outstanding, the tablet is fast. Compared with my Tab 10.1, it finally got the memory card slot and with the adapters, I can attach USB devices (stick, keyboard, mouse, ...).
I tried other solutions like the echo pen (paper pencil with digital recorder requiring special paper), but in the very end I searched an "all-in" solution.. documents, notes, calender, contacts, email, ... and now, I got it.
And Samsung announced during yesterdays US release that Jelly Bean will come this year.. so I am really satifisfied.

Well, I can tell you that at least one Cyanogenmod maintainer (myself) is almost surely purchasing the device.
So CM should eventually come unless this device has some horrible surprise - but it seems like Samsung ditched the evil AR6K wifi chip and its closed-source driver that was in previous Exynos tablets in favor of the same BCM4334 that is in the I9300.
I was originally thinking I'd get the 32GB version, but remembered this actually has a MicroSD slot - gonna go for the 16, which is available locally so I may get it tonight.

I'm probably going to do a minor Touchwiz kernel initially just for slight tweaks and also to ensure that I know how to properly build a kernel - but don't expect it to be incredibly fancy. Just basic small tweaks (Possibly including TriangleAway support) and compiled from source, before moving on to CM bringup.

First off. There were programs developed for the Thinkpad tablet that may require little or no porting.
Second off. If the Note 10.1 sells well, as well as the Note selling well, developers will come to it.
Third. The Note is not likely to be the last tablet with a active pen. Shoot they are even selling one for the iPad now ( MyNote ) and a kickstarter starter project ( iPen ).. So I think pens will be popular enough.
Yes yes the great and wonderful Steve Jobs said "who needs a stylus". If he ever had a real job instead of stealing from Woz and telling others what to do he would know who needs a stylus, and don't forget Jobs is the guy who once said "who needs a hard drive". The Mac took off, but soon started crashing partially because you copuldn't add a hard drive without voiding the warrantee. When Sculley wanted to modify the Mas so you could add a hard drive, and other things via SCSI a great war ensued and Jobs was booted. Think about this if Jobs had stayed and the Mac never got a hard drive, would Apple still be around to make the iPod?
The sector of the public that want's a tablet with a pen maybe a miche but it is a very large niche. It doesn't include just artists and note taking students ( and students is a fairly large niche ). It includes: note taking lawyers, graphical designers of all types, editors, note taking lawyers, note taking engineers, note taking middle level bsiness men etc. This is a niche that is far from small.
So yeah I think there will be plenty of developers around.

fantastic to see you here. Can't wait for your kernel. It's a fantastic device. I've been using it all day to take handwritten notes. Will cyanogenmod support the s pen
Initial feeling is that this tablet could use a Cyanogenmod blessing since it's equipped with 2GB DRAM but the bloat takes up 600-700MB on the display unit I looked at.

Right now, on the N7000, CM supports any app that uses the ICS pen APIs. There's some work to try and get one of the opensource pen apps (Such as Memo by ng93) included by default, but that's taking a while because we're all busy with JB device bringups at the moment. N80xx pen support should be equivalent to N7000 - On N7000, it was a matter of building the pen driver in the kernel and all of the ICS pen stuff immediately started working.
There's a patch in review for pen gesture support, but it needs to be forward-ported to JB and cleaned up.
S-Pen SDK apps will be a different story - that's a proprietary API which will not be supported by CM. Not sure if PS Touch supports the "vanilla" pen APIs.
Thanks for the clarification! Do you have any idea whether the S Pen SDK is better performing or otherwise superior compared to the ICS pen API? Looking at the documentation it seems like ICS should support all general pen functionality including buttons and pen position/tilt but maybe not the eraser (if this has an eraser?). Performance should just be a function of the driver, and not the API since input events should be going through the same system anyway.

Handwriting Note App

Im really getting mad that I cant find a good app that just lets me write my notes in math class. I had a windows 7 tablet with one note and was amazing.
Lecturenotes is a very good app. I use it all the time in college, I've replaced all my notebooks with my infinity
I know how you feel. I got my infinity with the idea of taking digital notes but it did not turn out aswell as I was expecting to. So I've had to make due with what I have getting a good stylus and getting comfortable writing in a screen that will catch every little touch.
LectureNotes has so far been the best in being able to keep track of notebooks for different classes and giving me that "freehand" feel that I don't get from the stock super note app.
Papyrus is a similar app that is still I'm beta, I think, that used to work great until recent updates that have made the writing on it super laggy for whatever reason. It was really a shame since I loved that it have "infinite" pages, felt like a never ending whiteboard.
Handrite is also nice but with me it has the same problem of making you write line by line no "freehand" writing.
TabNotes is another I recently bought and it was great until I realized that it requires a wifi connection everytime I try to use it because the developer does a license check and that really gets in the way when I'm somewhere with no internet. I really like the feel that I'm writing on paper, well kinda. It's similar to LectureNotes but allows more zoom so you can really write anywhere like you would on a piece of paper, if suggest using the trial.
Nvm apparently TabNotes took of that licence check off recently. I'm going to keep using LectureNotes for now though.

+1, Lecturenotes, Quill and Supernote itself are the best notetaking apps.
Once you get the hang of Supernote, it's truly awesome!

Note 10.1 or iPad 4

I'm not sure which one to get android is my favorite but every note 10.1 i try is laggy and stutters. I never owned a iPad but i tried it at best buy and it felt so smooth and fast and the screen was awesome except the screen shape. Does any one own both to tell me your opinion about speed and every day use.

I have to admit that the note 10.1 ICS is laggy but, the jelly bean update is coming and it's pretty fast, no more lag or stutter. Sorry but this tablet with jelly bean version will be way better than the ipad 4. The pen and multitasking on the tablet is amazing. Im sick of ipad. Just got rid of my ipad 3 and got new note 10.1 and i'm loving it. We are still waiting for Jelly bean update to come.
My Note 10.1 doesn't lag at all on ICS. Though the JC update should have some performance improvements. Some people have already gotten the JB update, but my device (N8010) hasn't yet.

Yeh, I have to admit I didnt notice any lag on ICS either. Though I came from an ipad1, so maybe thats why!
I'm on a JB rom at the moment (I have an 8010, using an 8000 rom) and it still seems smooth.
Have to say, the reason I got the note was because of the wacom digitiser. If you aren't going to make good use out of it, then the choice would be between the iPad4 or the Nexus10.
If you want to make use of the pressure sensitivity, then the iPad4 is going to be of no use to you.
So depending on what you want to use the tablet for... I'd say your choice should really be between the Nexus or the Note.
drawing
If you enjoy using drawing of any kind I can't reccomend this pad enough. There are a few apps that give professional level art programs. My favorite being tvpainter. They have a free beta that lasts till February. And the fact that wacom helped make the screen was more than enough reason for me to make my decision.
I'm still not sure , the only time I'm going to use the pen is for notes and editing pics. I'm mostly going to browse the web and watch and upload YouTube videos. My brother has the nexus 10 and it not for me the screen is nice but that's about it. I don't like apple but i like how they have lots of apps optimized for tablets when android app are just scaled up phone apps

If you need to take handwritten notes then you have to get the Note. Otherwise the iPad is a better option.
Again, it's how you use it. Apple is a locked down system. You can only use it to Apples stringent rules... Sure you can jailbreak but then you have to wait for someone to JB the next update or get left behind...
Note 10.1, and Android in general, allows you the option of rooting fairly easily. You can control what you want and how you use it, plug those pesky security risks, and don't kid yourself Apple has them too, and change the ui to what you want. It allows you to put what you need where and make the device yours... Apple is a sterile hospital room in comparison..
I don't know why any tabs you used were stuttery, my experience with the note, ICS and JB, has been fantastic. You need to remember that the demo models in stores are subject to people playing around with them and maxing out the ram usage. Also I know that the stores also load their own app(s) onto the demo models which may cause issues.
ICS was great, JB is phenomenol. I have a 32gb 3G version. I use a 64gb sd card, that's a combined total of 96gb.. Transferring Apps, movies, music and pictures onto the note doesn't require specialised software that has a new update every 2days.
S-pen works wonders, not an artist but I find the s-pen easier to use than the onscreen keyboard. Use handwriting for everything.
And finally, the biggest plus for me was the fact I can make and receive phone calls.... Not using skype or any other 3rd party app but dialling out using my carrier. Not reliant on wifi. I use the bluetooth stylus as its easier to have on me than a headset and I hate sharing my private conversation with the world.....
I have never liked Apple as it is a closed system and there may be an advantage or 2 for that sort of app developement but I can't complain about the apps for Android. You can generally find the same or an equivalent app on Android that you use on IOS.
Essentially the decision is yours, If you are leaning towards Apple, go with it as that's your preference, I don't care as I don't have to live with your decision and you need to go with what you want...
I tried out a note 10.1 in PC world before I bought it. I must have gone in to the store a dozen times, each time the device was extremely laggy and stuttery. I assumed it was because the store devices have demo mode running all the time, plus there were so many apps running that weren't closed down. I got so frustrated in store with the lagyness. But I bought one and it couldn't be more different.....it is really smooth. so it must have been all the crap the store version had running.

If you're an 'appy' type of guy and want everything to 'just work', pick the iPad 4. But if you're the 'tinker' guy and will find the S-pen useful, of course the Note 10.1 will suit you.
Generally though, iOS is smoother than Android, even with Jelly Bean. This comes from a previous iPad owner, now a Note 10.1 owner. I still kind of miss the iPad. If only the apps on Android tablets are as great as on iOS, then I will not miss it anyway.
Just my 2 cents!

What are the differences between Android tablets (for obvious reasons, we're talking about hardware and tablets of the same family (eg. Tab > Tab 2, TF101 > TF201 > TF300 > TF700))?
Faster/more powerful CPU? More powerful GPU? More RAM? Better camera? Better quality screen? The newer versions of iPads always have some sort of upgrade, hence why people actually upgrade their device. I'm not trying to start a flame-war, but it's clear to me that you're completely ignorant to all things Apple. So my suggestion for you is to stop talking about things that you know nothing about. If you're going to ignore everything about something, you might as well forget that it exists.
Its not only the hardware that's the same with Apple.... IOS promises a host of new features but all it really delivers is a slight improvement, usually a feature that's been available on Android for a few revisions... And this is called "Innovation" whereas Android is then accused of stealing a feature that has been available for a long time....
I don't mind the constant law suits so much as it does push new features and designs out by the companies who probably would rest on their laurels like Apple... However, Apple seems to push the fact that they came up with the idea, they then patent stuff that should have been laughed out of the patent office - really, a rectangular body with rounded corners? I had a Phillips Fizz long before the Iphone ever surfaced and that describes it exactly....
I'm sorry but I thought Innovation and stagnation had 2 different meanings but according to the Apple dictionary they are the same word...

I'm not arguing that everything Apple does is innovative or revolutionary. I just find it stupid for people, like jojo1419, to say that all iPads are the same. If people actually believe that iPad 1 = iPad 4, then wow, that's ignorance at its finest, folks.
And yes, Android does have features that iOS is missing, but one thing I LOVED about my iPad was that apps were actually made for the iPad. I love my Note 10.1, but it's irritating to download an app, expect a nice tablet-friendly experience, and seeing an over-sized mobile UI. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the huge amount of tablet-friendly apps in Apple's App Store and should lower my expectations of apps from the Google Play Store.

I guess you would have to look at the apps you use and think about whether or not you'd care..?
For me, the things I do on my tablet include (but is not limited to because I may forget things):
-web browsing
-redditing
-note taking
-drawing (I suck at this one, but I like doing it )
-reading (pdfs, ebooks, etc.)
-doing homework sets (physics problems in lecture notes)
-watching stuff (like NetFlix because my desktop uses linux)
The only thing I wish Android apps had was an easy way to connect your tablet to mathematica on your computer or something. I don't want to pay Wolfram any more than I have to so I don't want to buy time on his f*cking servers by using WolframAlpha..
Anyway, my point was that, there is no point here where I would consider Apple to have better "tablet" apps than Android. Mostly because the one thing that MAY be better would be "note apps" except those note apps are usually limited to text or stupid **** that don't apply to the way I want to take notes. But yeah, sure, I guess there are better optimized Angry Birds in the Apple store..?
I agree, alot of people here are total fanboys. Apple may not be the most innovative company, but there innovations are numerous compared to Samsung. For starters maybe the note 10.1 would not even exist if it wasn't for the innovations apple made in the early 90's with the development of the Apple Newton.

I agree wholeheartedly that Apple got the ball rolling and keep it rolling with their idiotic lawsuits however, Apple as a whole has reached a state of stagnation...
They are slow to add extra features into their hardware and software, are limited in a lot of ways with their software and lock everything down. They are all about control, you do it Apples way or no way. Itunes is a mongrel thing to have to use, and no support for video files except mp4.... Waste of time converting EVERYTHING in my library...
The fact they now, for the iphone 5, decided to change the connector to something that doesn't support the old accessories is a bit of a slap in the face for their loyal customers, at least they could have included an adaptor in the box...
If it had of been to the mini usb like most companies have decided should be the standard for mobile phones, fair enough but it is another proprietry connection...
I know samsung use a different USB 30 pin connector for their tabs but all the phones, tablets weren't included in the agreement, have got the standard mini usb adaptor...
Lets be totally clear here, Apple cornered the market, updated a few things then sat on their laurels until their martket was being threatened by a competitor. They then did a kneejerk reaction and a quick catchup that was still behind the competitor but followed that up with a marketing blitz that wa phenominol to make people believe that they are "Innovative" and that everyone else wasn't. When that seemed to be failing them they decided to slam the competition with frivolous lawsuits for patents that were obviously a massive waste of time...
The last win they had did them more harm than good as they pointed out that the competition was essentially selling the same thing for a lot cheaper and their bottom line will continue to drop now this has been divulged.
I personally know a hard core Apple fanboy who has crossed to the darkside, his girlfriend now has an SGS3 and he went the way of Windows 8 phone... Apple is shooting themselves in the foot by lagging behind in the software and hardware that the consumers want.

I agree wholeheartedly that Apple got the ball rolling and keep it rolling with their idiotic lawsuits however, Apple as a whole has reached a state of stagnation...

Gonna go ahead and play devil's advocate:
Connector: They had the same connector for a DECADE. Micro USB is fiddly and aren't any docks for it because there's no standard so you need *gasp* a proprietary dock for you exact handset! With Apple you could have bought a dock for your iPod 5 years ago and it would still work with your iPhone 4 with the adapter Apple includes with the phone! Can you say that about anything non-Apple? It was time to change the connector and it's nice, and can be used across it's whole ecosystem which is dope. I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy Note 10.1, I can't purchase a dock for either because Samsung refused to bring them to Canada. I'd have to pay $180 for the Note 10.1 dock from South Korea (including shipping / tariffs / customs) and $90 for the gnex landscape dock. HILARIOUS.
Lawsuit: they won, period. There was written proof that Samsung copied the iPhone. Like everyone else copied the retina display. Like everyone else copied the whole iPad-esque tablet. You think you would have a Nexus 10 without the original iPad? You think you'd have a good smartphone? All-in One PCs? Ultrabooks? These product types always seem to become popular soon after Apple has come out with it. Note that I did not say they were the first to make that type of product, only that other companies seem to get the balls to make sexy stuff right after Apple popularizes it.

[Q] Tablet as a shared family calendar with use of stylus? Experiences?

Hello all,
What I want.
Everyone in my family has a android smartphone and uses the calendar for personal use.
At home we have a normal paper calendar for family things like appointments and stuff.
My thought was to use the tablet as a shared family calendar so everyone can see and add things no matter where they are.
Adding things to a digital calendar with just the touchscreen keyboard is a pain in the b*tt (we all have full querty phones).
So I thought maybe a stylus is the way to go? Just write stuff on the screen and it will add it to the calendar?
Anyone has any experience with using a tablet for this?
Use:
Share family calendar
Maybe a quick internet search
Budget:
Not sure (250,-?). A Note 10.1 with stylus goes for 450 euro wich might be a bit steep for the thing we will (mainly) use it for.
Thanks in advance for all the tips tricks and advice!

Nobody able to give any advice or comments?
I'm not really sure about if you can share an app and its settings across accounts - I've never messed around with that functionality.
However, take a look here : http://support.google.com/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=37082
A Google account can have more than one calendar, so you could just make a "Family" one and give everyone all permissions or whatever.
This way, anyone could view the calendar from any computer or phone that supports it, too.
As for the stylus question, I don't really know. Have you tried SwiftKey 3 or a Swype type keyboard ? I was dead-set on having a physical keyboard phone, but didn't like the gimped specs that they all seemed to have - so I took a chance with the S3 - and after finding Swiftkey 3 I actually don't think I'd want to go back to a phone with a physical keyboard since I can type so much faster this way.
Maybe there's a writing-to-text type of keyboard. It seems likely. Here's one : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phatware.writepad . Don't know if there are others. Good investment if you don't like any of the digital keyboard options (Swiftkey 3 has a free trial, so you don't have to spend anything just to try it).
Ah, I see you don't actually have the tablet yet. Well, you don't really need a tablet for the calendar shared across all phones - but you could share one anyway for fun and to use apps that work better on a tablet.
If you don't care about it having the best specs, the TF101 is pretty cheap on eBay - and you can get it with the keyboard dock for ~$250. I have one and for everyday apps I can't tell a big difference between it and the TF700. I'd pick 7" or 10" first and go from there if you still want one. There are lots of tablets that still perform admirably or under $250 - and if you just need a basic stylus you can get one of those as cheap as $1 - there are nicer ones, but those will work pretty well anyway (got one free).
First of all thank you so much for this great reply!

I use the google calendar for myself but didn't thought it was an option since I have to use the onscreen keyboard wich I hate.
This get me to the following.

I tried swype but never got the hang of it. Feels unnatural or something.
Never heard of Swifkey 3 so I will try that. If that realy works like you said it does I am a happy camper.
I have the same problem with the phone specs as you mentioned.
My Xperia pro is the 'fastest' phone out there with the physical keyboard but it needs replacing soon but there is no alternative atm.
I will install and try it on my xperia pro and let you know how it works out.

A tablet just seems to be handy with the larger screen. The phones work ok but browsing and calendar can be a pain on the small screens.
I have been looking at the TF-101 and it seems to be a great option for this. If swiftkey works ok I don't need to dock it evertime I use the calendar. The keyboard is ofcourse great when typing loads of text like I am doing now.
Going to test the apps and run it by the wife because well.........I am just a husband with plans and no authority. haha.
Thanks again for your effort.
[side note] Maybe the asus padphone would be great aswell but then with 2 phones and one tab. Sounds handy in theory.
I don't know about your use habits, but for Google Calendar, you can add/edit it from a browser on a desktop/laptop as well. I do this a bit when adding events/tasks to apps (I also use Astrid, a to-do list type app - also allows sharing between multiple users).
I like the "rapid" setting on Swiftkey 3 - I've been really impressed that it can correct most of the spelling mistakes I make as I type (and the suggestions it offers are usually good/time saving) - and with the arrows you can enable in settings, it's very easy to go back if you've made a mistake it didn't catch - no more trying to poke just the place I put in a wrong letter. The Asus keyboard on the TF101 is actually pretty good at making suggestions for words, though it's not as good at making corrections.
On the 10" tablet, typing on the screen is a bit more natural, too - you're not limited to just two thumbs.

I used to use the Google calendar on my phone and manually add all of our home appointments in it with my computer. Just a pain in the ass to keep it up to date. Kinda stopped using it now because of that. But I really need it because of constant brain farts. That's how I thought if this. Astrid seems great a great tool to assist my brain so will definitely try that.

So far I am quite impressed. Typed this whole post with it and going ok but have to get used to it though. Might open a whole lot new world. I love the costumisation of the app. Lots of settings. Great tip!
Now I am not sure what I want anymore. Asus seems great with the keyboard dock and all. Easy for writing emails and stuff. We need 2 new computers so maybe just buy one that is killer and then a tablet like the Asus.
Brain is killing me again

Just wanted to give an update.
Bought a transformer prime TF201 with keyboard dock.
Installed 'switchme' on it so my wife and I have a seperate acount.
Must say that it works like a charm.
Using swiftkey3 when not on the dock and I love. Great advice!
Google calendar is shared and that also work great.
Install the app 'calendar pad' to use the google calendar and it's great on the 10.1 tablet.
I ordered a slim case with a stylus for the prime just to test it out.
So far so good. Thanks for convincing me in buying a tablet toy.
Wife already told me she hates you because I have no more time for her

AndrOpen App - Open Office App

I have just stumbled on this gem. When I bought my first Android phone I was searching like crazy for something similar. ..it took about 3 years to appear.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andropenoffice
It has 78MB so you will need an wifi connection.
Enjoy the best office suite on Galaxy Note series.
Hit thanks if you like it.
Looks good.
Cheers for pointing it out.

This is an awful execution. It's basically a desktop application crammed onto a cell phone screen. The GUI elements aren't scaled for a handheld device, and the app is pretty much completely unusable for that reason.
On a big tablet, it might be great, and it certainly seems to offer a whopping load of functionality, but on a phone-sized screen it just doesn't work.
Not that I don't appreciate being informed about office suite apps, because I could use a good one, but this one is at least several iterations away from being useable.
They have not changed OO source code, they have just ported the desktop version. If you use the SPen then is the perfect app.
I have enjoyed using it. As stated, with the S-pen it is perfect.

perfect porting
If you use an external monitor you have a huge boost in productivity!!!!
