Yes its a good phone, its a solid build. And works well. As long as look at the development thread you can find some cool things and ROMS to use. I dont know if you could have waited or your budget, but Nexus 4 is nice and the Galaxy Note 2. I am looking to upgrade soon to those. I have had my inspire for about 1.5 yrs.

It's a nice phone once rooted. Mine would reboot randomly like most people experienced, I used a different launcher and that solved it butbut then I finally rooted a few months ago.
If you have an upgrade soon I'd say wait but if not, I'd get the newest thing you could. Unless you wanted to get it and then use your upgrade later when it comes to get a different phone after buying a DHD or Inspire outright. You can have fun with this phone though so I think it just depends on how long you want to keep it. If it's gonna be pushing a year, you might want to look for something newer.

Galaxy S 4G, Should I keep it?

Hi Guys I recently bought this phone that I like overall. Recently i have been running out of space on the internal memory. I am really not here to bring down the hopes of anyone on this phone but I want a real honest answer since I have spent 500.00 on this phone and still have one more day to exchange it.
Do you think i should exchange this phone for a G2? Should solve the Internal memory issue. Dev seems to be very active and I am hoping to keep this phone for at least a year if not more so i will be probably rooting and customizing this phone with new ROMS. Galaxy S 4g is also my first Android phone and I know is newer than G2 but not sure if it's actually better .
So your advised and thoughts are greatly appreciate it since tomorrow I will be making my final decision wether to keep this one or not.
So my questions is should i exchange this phone taking in consideration that I will be keeping for at least a year and also will be hoping to add new ROMS and rooting. Also need a phone with good battery life and snappy.
Any other input/thoughts/ideas that i might have missed would be also appreciate it and thanks for helping me choose wisely.
I think you should keep the phone. Just doing the fota fix gives me 400mb+ free internal memory and i bet there might be a way to free up even more space. I think 400mb is A LOT of space, just transfer all the app you can onto the SD card and you will never have momory issues.

Thanks for you answer Icy56. Anyone else has any other opinion?
If you really want to be able to really experience xda and what an android phone can really do, at this point, your g2 idea is the way to go. Found myself in the EXACT predicamant your in myself less than a week ago. Got a brand new 4g, thinking it would be all that and a bag of chips after having a vibrant and seeing how great the galaxy s phones can be when there is an active community. You gotta be honest with yourself (if for no other reason than the five hundred dollars involved) about this ever happening with the 4g.
Its not a next generation or a must have upgrade phone, ESPECIALLY from a dev standpoint, so while the community around this phone will get a bit more active, it will never explode because its not a major release phone, not to mention touchjizz makes devs lives hell from what I gather.
If you like the phone the way it is, by all means keep it, its a beautiful phone. But if you want to really experience what all your android friends have been talking about with custom roms and such, jump ship.

Lol, Hopefully one day I can have the wealth to make people happy and give phones away.
The G2 has a keyboard... Why is this tech still produced adding weight size and increased chance of hinge breaking when Swype and touch screens are FAR superior... My 2 cents
Galaxy S 4G
If you spent $500 on the phone. I'd trade it for the G2X if it's within your 30 day period. I wouldn't trade it for the G2.
I think in California is 30 day period. In Minnesota where I live is only 14 days.
Well, Thanks guys for your answers.
I have decided to keep my Galaxy S 4G. Hope to have great conversations about this phone.
Welcome aboard. I'm sure you'll enjoy some Roms once they come out.

I think it's a good ideal to keep it. Just follow the guys in the dev section and pray that custom roms come along sooner than later.
Not really 2 cents, but the way I got mine was actually by selling a modded HTC HD2 I was using, and basically got this phone for 50$ when it was all said and done.. yet i got that much for my HD2.. lol
Anyhow, MY plan is to hold onto this until the HTC pyramid or Galaxy S 2 come out, those are my next jump ship phones. And additionally..
With the experience I had with this phone.. I got it maybe a few weeks after it came out.. Frankly I learned from that, I plan to wait at least a few months before I decide which phone to jump ship to, rather than get it right away.. that way I'll REALLY know which one is better.

[Q] Best Android Smart Phone

Hi all, I just wanted to post a quick question. I'm looking to upgrade from my sad Kyocera Zio M6000 to a top of the line, best in the market, Android smart phone. I thought I was going to get the HTC Thunderbolt until I spoke with my sister who works for Verizon and she said to hold off because it's having issues right now with switching from 3G to 4G. So I wanted to check here and see what you all think right now is the best, top of the line android smart phone out there. The most powerful, can handle -ANY- games out on the market, can record HD video, has 2 way camera, all the bells and whistles and is going to last me liekly years before I even think about getting a new one. I made a mistake getting my Zio and I've been regretting it for 10 months now and I don't want to make that mistake again. I plan to play game son it, watch movies,.. everything on it .. I appreciate all your responses and thank you for your time! ")

Samsung Galaxy S 2.
there are loads of good phone out there, but it depends on what you want to do with it, as lot of people root there phone and put custom roms on there.
if i was you i would wait for something like the HTC Pyramid or if you really want a android handset then go for the Samsung Galaxy S 2, but it is upto you mate.
Best Android phone in the market: The one YOU can wait for.
Right now, Galaxy II.
Soon, stay tuned.
If playing games is important to you, though not the best, you should be getting the "Playstation Certified" Xperia Play that opens you up to those Playstation titles on top of the normal Android ones, and you get a near PSP controller that you don't get anywhere else.
Google Nexus S i think
if you can, wait for the Nexus 3
ok maybe I should have qualified this with 1 other thing, a phone I can order service for and setup this week or next. I like the idea of the Galaxy S2, but last I looked it's not out till the fall and I need to replace mine right now lol.
LG p990 i think :O
for me there is no better idea than my desire at the moment

What are everyone's opinions of the HTC Thunderbolt? I keep considering that one as well due to the fact it seems to be the top of the line right now from Verizon. And yes Monty, I am in the US.
Heard lots of good things about the thunderbolt and it has some pretty great dev support. If I could pick any Verizon phone right now the thunderbolt would be it.

Well I have this one, more because of size and weight than anything else. Of course all those 4 inch 800x480 + displays and dual cores are better but are also bigger, and tend to drain battery faster.
Anyway I would love to have something in the same size as the Gio but with the "power" of Galaxy SII

I get bored with phones very easily but once i got my Inspire i wanted to keep it for more than a month or 2 (which was the shelf life for a phone to me for a long time) So i rooted it to keep me busy/interested, and when i get bored i dive deeper into the root to make it better. But im at a point now where i dont know enough to go much further, and the onlyfriends i have that are into phones like i am are through here. So its hard to actually be taught anything. So i really want a new phone but not sure which direction i should go, or if i should hold out till the new batch of phones is out. In short, why cant i be satisfied with a phone nfor more than a few months?
Nope i wanna stick around until a while. The inspire is a great device

I will stick with it because I am on a contract and the phone is quite capable. And new phones come daily so if you sell inspire for dual core phone then quad core will come soon

I've found the Inspire to be one of the best phones I've ever owned. I think I'd only put the G1 above it in terms of phones I loved owning. The Inspire has given me 0 problems, has tons of dev support and is still very fast/snappy to use.
Not tired of it at all. I do lust for the Galaxy Nexus or the Razr while laying in bed at night...but I feel bad about it in the morning.

Also, I do find myself getting bored with it easily. Definitely an amazing device, but damn that Galaxy Nexus is tempting. If only it had the 8MP camera!
I actually really like my Inspire still, It's still a very capable device. I am going to be due for an upgrade in the next few months and i am going to be holding on to this phone i think for a while. Till something really catches my eye, because i really want to get another HTC device. The galaxy nexus looks sweet but im not a fan of Samsung's use of so much plastic on their phones.
My inspire makes me pancakes for breakfast every morning. I'll probably keep it until I'm tired of pancakes or my pants don't fit anymore.

That's what's so great about Android and being rooted. Get bored, flash a new ROM. Voila, new phone
No way! I love my Inspire still, it's a great phone, everything is really smooth with it right now. I'll probably hang on to it for another 18 months till i have another upgrade.
I really like my Inspire. I can not find a reason to upgrade. Nothing else out does anything different. I need a new Experiance before I will upgrade again. (or my contract is up). I had a Windows phone and modded the hell out of it and then, I went Iphone and modded it to death, and then andriod. Modded to death. See my pattern, each was a new experience. I will need a reason to leave my phone before I will.
meh...
After having issues with the battery life, I'm ready to upgrade to something with a larger battery & better screen. I'm not really hating on the phone, just disappointed with it.
Next phone I buy will be at cost, since I picked it up for $100 with a new contract.
I'm not tired of it (took 2 months only) but maybe if a little disappointed, I was recently at a concert and record some songs but my disappointment came into play, pesimo sound seemed pfffff q was in a machine room, something my old iphone that never happened to me, but good either me every day I live concerts as he remains so until q together for my new iphone 4s.
I have to say I like it and can deal with the few minor probs like battery life until the edge is released or equal to it. Sense I buy all my phones at cost I am willing to wait and see the next Gen device and right now everything else is just too weak to justify upgrading yet
So far I'm lovin' it. While this IS my first smartphone, I'd have to say I'm impressed overall with the phone. One thing bugs me though. I don't take a lot of pictures, but when I do, I like to not have to set my whitebalance to fluorescent every time I want to take a low light picture with my flash... I kinda wish the coders had implemented where if the camera sees low light, and decides to use the flash, to just set the whitebalance to fluorescent. Ahh the little things.
Overall I like the build quality, for ME it's been a solid phone, and I love modding it. Endless entertainment!
i've had mine for a couple months and it's the best phone i've ever owned and im happy with it but honestly im bored. Too many sense rom's are the same and CM7 just dosen't interest me anymore and i've been using MIUI for the last couple weeks but i'm getting to the point where i can't really expand it that much more. I'm going to try to convince my dad (im only 14) to kick my brother off of our family plan and make him go to a gophone plan as he's 19 and dosen't use his phone much and then pay the ETF and switch to verizon, with christmas coming up i think he'll do it but i'll just have to wait
Tired of it? Heck no! This is my fifth Android device and I love it. To me nothing else out at the moment is compelling enough to switch. I love the actual build quality of the phone. Too many other phones just have too much plastic on them and they feel cheap. This phone is solid. Its plenty fast and well supported in the community. My contract is up in August of 2012 so if it doesn't get bricked before then, that is what I will be using. I look forward to see the offerings then.
I've had the inspire since launch day and it has lived up to the billing so far. There's really nothing you can't do with this phone. I live in Houston which has LTE but I'm working in Odessa right now so there's no need for me to jump into an LTE device just yet. They barely have hspa+ rolled out down here. I'll probably wait until next year for the new slate of devices, when att broadens their LTE footprints.
For now I'm enjoying my inspire

I love my inspire but like others am bored of the same old roms. Wanted the vivid but with the tegra 3 quad core already in the new transformer 2 tablet I think I might wait. And Samsung I believe has a phone called the flex that is supposed to come out q2 2012 with a flexible screen and body I think there are too many better phones in the near future to justify using my upgrade now and waiting two more years to get something better. Girl I work with just ordered the vivid so i will just look at it when she gets it and go from there

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.

Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!
Is butter related only to the ram or software also?

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!

Getting my device tomorrow

Hey guys,
I'm getting my device tomorrow and just figured I'd say hello to everyone. I'm not a total noob when it comes to android stuff, I do a bit of dev stuff here and there and I have made a few small apps, mods, etc. I would not consider myself a dev, though. Lol. Anyways, I'm pretty familiar with rooting HTC Devices, I've had the G1, MyTouch 3G, G2, MyTouch 4G Slide, HTC Sensation... etc. However, I am now coming from a Samsung Galaxy SII... While it was a nice device, I am VERY happy to be getting back to an HTC device. I'm also really looking forward to getting myself acquainted around these boards.
Welcome
The HTC One S was my first Android. I've only had it a week but I had no problem flashing root and ROM after reading all the great information on XDA.
Actually this very active section of XDA was one of the main reasons I chose one

My second Android device...
I personally usually find these threads quite boring to read but as I'm also getting my phone soon and this thread exists, then what the heck ! And this is also my first message on these forums so let this also serve as an introduction.
I got the phone (black, S4) for 347 euros (from an internet store here in Finland) with free shipping, so I felt the phone was a bargain. Originally I was on the market for Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4. The Gnex felt a bit plasticky and with oldish hardware for the One s price, I ruled it out. The Nexus 4 seemed the ultimate android device and by far the best phone out right now. But when it came clear that the 300'ish price was only for certain countries (currently sells for about 550€ here in Finland) and the fact that i wouldn't get it for christmas, it was no longer an option. I was looking at Nexus phones because I like to tinker with my phones and want "a vanilla" android experience without any manufacturer bloat.
This is my second android device. I previously had a Motorola Defy that I had for about a year. Was running CM10 on it when it died (RIP) and absolutely loved it even though by the end of its' life it started dropping connections and I was unreachable at times (this nearly drove my girlfriend crazy couple of times ). After that I decided to try something totally different and went for a Lumia 800. That proved to be the biggest phone related mistake that I have ever made. The phone works great, never missed a call or text with it and the build quality is excellent. But I feel like I can't do enough with it. 4 months of Windows Phone is enough for me .
The phone actually has already arrived but I try to keep my hands off it until christmas eve. I'm currently really busy with work and studies and the phone would definately have a negative effect on my efficiency.
It's a really sleek phone and like previous posters have said, I can't recommend TWRP recovery enough. Unfortunately I am cursed with the S3 processor and don't really have much choice in terms of custom roms. Woe is me. But still, enjoy the phone man!
