So what do you guys think about the next few weeks. The Samsung Galaxy S3, quad core phones coming to US, maybe new release for TMobile US. I am trying really hard to hold out on upgrading from my G2.
But I know I want to because the technology is so much better. What do you guys think will go on Post-HTC One S?
The thing that I wonder about most about the Galaxy S3 is, it will have the new quad-core Exynos chip. But this chip is based on ARM A9 on a 32nm process - our Snapdragon S4 Krait is based on ARM A15 @ 28nm. I'm going to wait for benchmarks, but I don't think that chip is going to blow away our One S at all.
Plus, if it is anything like every previous Samsung, it will be a cheap, crappy plastic build quality. Everyone who holds my One S is amazed at the slimness, weight and elegance of this phone. I'm glad that I didn't wait for Samsung.

Agree. Last two phones have been Tmo-sgs and sgs2...plastic builds..decent phones...horrible support. Dev community was great on sgs but people not devs were unbearable on sgs2. After getting the One S its heaps better than both in build and UI. Very satisfies with phone.

The Exynos quad core destroys everything. Haven't you seen the benchmarks? Smokes the Krait and the Tegra 3.
It probably won't come to the US though, because it will probably lack LTE capabilities.
Yeah I don't believe it will be getting the quad core processor, I have read about that.
I guess I am stuck. I am due for upgrade. I have mobile freedom for once in my life... but I am very cautious to upgrade to the HTC One S with the SGS3 around the corner and talks of the Galaxy Note coming to TMobile also.
I think I would really enjoy the Note. Tablet + phone = awesome.
I will wait it out and see, but I don't think anything will be destroying the HTC One S processing power anytime soon unless you buy a universal phone for some reason. Even then, who needs 4 cores?!

i had the atet and international notes. atet note sucked, tmobile note will probably be identical. international was much better with the exynos and all the development. I liked the intl note alot but decided to trade it for the One S. its up to you but I would not get the tmobile note unless it has the exynos, which it probably will not.

I would more suggest choose phone or tablet... Phone + tablet = horrably big phone or to small tablet!
I don't think quad cores are anything to sing praises about in smartphones just yet, not until there's more to actually take advantage of them. Look at the One S vs One X, for example. Regardless of the resolution difference (which obviously has an impact), the One S certainly packs a punch against it with it's dual core.

The GS3 won't be announced till next week. After that, there will probably be an international launch, then an exclusitivity here in the states by AT&T, anywhere from 30-90 days. What this means is that even if T-Mobile picks up the phone, it won't be till Q4.

A lot of us here on XDA have been anticipating this phone's release. Turns out the specs are almost the same as our old MT4GS. Let your anger out here if you wish OR are some going for it anyways? Also, looks like Tmo USA is getting the Note 2. Are some gonna just hope on that instead? If any touch screen device can replace a QWERTY, its definitely the Note. Plenty of screen real estate for typing. What do you guys think?

Still lacks a decent camera (I know MP don't mean everything. Lens quality and image processor matter much more.), extra ram, etc.... I may wait for the Note 2, the alleged 5 Nexuseseses, blah blah blah before deciding for sure. I still am enjoying my DS especially since CM9 runs butter smooth and flawless now
I don't see any advantage on this other than having support from tmobile & has official ICS ROM. Also does this have FM Radio? I only hunt phones with qwerty keyboard and FM radio prebuilt

I agree... guess I should have clarified in the op that the original guess/rumor was that this phone would have 720 HD 4" screen and a S4 processor. That's why I posted the release info cause it was such a downer plus a few of us had been waiting on confirmation here. I'm not sure if Samsung normally has FM radio though. I'm using stuff like Sirius XM/Pandora so I hardly touch that FM dial anymore. It seems like this is a lower mid range model instead of the SGSIII with a keyboard that it was rumored to be

galaxy S Series has FM Radios built into them that's why I asked.
difference in performance between s3 & s4 processors is just 15%. The 1GB RAM & 4inch display seems to be catchy but keeps me thinking if the 15% processing power + 250mb addin ram would convince me in spending another few hundred bucks?
The 4inch screen is a turn off for me I find 3.7 perfect already.
Also what about the camera?
And regarding NFC I don't find it very useful(at least in our country where most people are still stuck with no OS phones.
So... For me unless I render my phone unuseable or a new phone has something which would make a big difference compared to my current phone I guess I'll be sticking with my current one.

Hehehhe! I hear ya... I was more interested in the S4's power saving/gpu improvement vs the cpu performance. I've heard that range from 15 to 30% I guess it just depends on each application, really... I think 4" is the perfect size for a qwerty. I'd might even like to see bigger lol! (Probably would a huge ass brick, right?) Yeah, I don't know much about Samsung (had no idea about the FM on the Galaxy models) but as long as HTC keeps the attitude that qwertys are dead... Samsung is my second choice, I guess. I'm still liking my DS for now. My contract is up in October and this was gonna be my upgrade. Oh well... I'll hang around for the next or pick up that Note 2. NFC hasn't really picked up anywhere even in the old USA. Well, maybe a few of the bigger cities use them more so... I don't know.
I might still want to jump ship to the Samsung slider.

Since my MT4GS is less than 1 year old, I'm going to wait until the next Nexus debuts. I've decided that from now on I will only buy Nexus products. I'm sick of the bull**** from HTC and other manufacturers and their lame-ass excuses for not producing an update. HTC can suck my ***. I will miss Sense UI, though. I'm one of the few, it seems, that prefers how Sense works and looks.
I will probably getting the Note. Now that my phone got bricked about two months ago by the faulty recovery and all HTC has been doing of late is churning out excuses instead of making updates for this device.
I will shelve my brick so it works as a reminder that I shoudl never buy another HTC device again.

Thanks for the PM. I understand. I am actually just disappointed in HTC for making devs jump through so many hurdles to get anything done on this device, and further frustrate them by not releasing source. The only reason why their sales are suffering is because they don't listen.
I have been reading up on the problem and looking through the forums to see what other devices used to fix this problem. And with Samsung it was simply restocking with odin or using heimdal tool.
I will definitely be sending it because I love its camera to bits. It really takes good photos. Once my friend put his OneX up against my MT4GS and it ended up taking better close ups than the OneX because it seemed to have a better auto focus.
I will be saving up for the first note to replace my G2(which has seen better days) if I manage to get this fixed.

This device is pretty epic. I can live with a 5mpx camera no problem. It's a really nice looking device. I've grown tired with Sense, and HTC in general. BUT Walmart is now selling the TMO version on GSII. It's off contract, and only 300 bucks. That's a deal.

Hmmm... Seems like the specs are conflicting still. Check this out: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SGH-T699DABTMB-specs It clearly shows the MSM8260A as the processor type which is a S4. Confirm that here: http://www.qualcomm.com/chipsets/snapdragon However, David (tmonews editor) is still claiming that both his press releases (tmobile and samsung) show the device having the S3. Someone screwed up big time lol! I feel that only a S4 makes sense at time but I guess its still a mystery?!
I am very interested in this new keyboard Galaxy, hopefully an GalaxySIII variant with S4 or Tegra3 chipset.
two key reasons: the Doubleshot is a rare device and never sold outside USA, so here in the UK I'm living on luck in terms of support of UK/European 3G operators.

also hoping for good performance without battery compromise. I am actively using my DShot for about three hours a day (starting about 7:30am over breakfast, on the bus into work and back, and a while in the evening before bed at 11:30pm) and the battery is usually exhausted!
If you're still using the stock battery that's at least part of the problem. If you were to get an Anker or Mugen battery and run a debloated version of the stock ROM so you could keep your original camera and it's functions you'd really see a difference. I sure did.
Having a 5 row qwerty again sure would be nice.

Totally relevant! It's nice to see my old brothers in the G2 section lol! And I couldn't agree with ya more... this device would have been huge with the dual core processor qwerty and bad ass camera (that is STILL one the best around!)
It will be quite some time, before dev action pics up on that device (if ever). So jumping into that phone right now would be a bad idea, unless you want to dev.
It's been a little more than a year since the DS came out, and we now have many roms to choose from. So think of how long this will take
Does anyone know if the internals of this new phone are based on the internals of another Galaxy phone? That would make porting a lot easier and also speed up devving.
But by the looks of it, I am liking this phone design a lot. Has everything I need, including a trackpad. Now, as long as they keep the physical size down, I may consider getting one.

The phone is not yet released so can't really say. But judging by the hardware specs. It looks like a SGS II.
Regarding development support... There's already SGS III which obviously is 1 fold greater than this device + relay 4g is also a tmobile exclusive. I don't see any samsung devs downgrading just to support this device(except maybe dedicated community devs like cyanogenmod etc.). For all I know the only persons which will be attracted on this device are keyboard enthusiasts like me. But I just got a mt4gs & relay 4g isn't that of a big difference with mt4gs anyways. So I'll pass on this phone for now. And if ever I decided to go samsung with qwerty I would rather choose samsung captivate glide instead. At least the specs are far more superior than relay 4g.

It's like a 1.5ghz celeron processor vs a 1ghz Pentium 4
And by the way Samsung captivate glide isn't even officially supported by cyanogenmod. So relay 4g being a much lower spec'd device do you think they'd get alot more support than captivate glide?

I'm pretty torn here. I really liked the first Note, but I couldn't use one because it never came to Big Red. Right now I'm leaning Note just because that screen is so amazing, and the S-Pen is a great change.

Nope, i refuse to have to hold my phone with both hands just to use it. I like being able to send a quick text using swype with just one hand.

It sounds like you really love the form factor of the note, but keep this in mind:
The US GS3 is a spec beast. The krait architecture (>Cortex A9), 2GB RAM, and on-die LTE modem will keep this phone competitive for a LONG time.
My fascinate was a great phone (even runs JB), but as the newer versions of android were released, having only 370MB of RAM available to your cpu can really constrained the device. Redraws are the worst. Similarly, quad core A9 devices with 1GB RAM could struggle in a year and a half. When everything is dual or quad 2GHZ A15'ing, 1080p screen sporting, desktop and laptop (webtop) docking beasts, the Android OS can demand more out of a System-on-chip.
I'm sure I'll Jones for the next device like everyone else, but it's hard to justify getting a new toy when the GS3 will still be competitive. I could see myself running 4 more versions of android on this phone.
Plus, I'm no market analyst, but I think the GS3 will outsell the note 2 (more of a niche market). With identical (other than radio) variants on all US carriers, the community support for this device has been and will continue to be outstanding! Community support and open nature is what makes the nexus devices so great. We took back part of the GS3's openness when we found the bootloader unlock solution.
Why would I want a tablet that can make calls, its way to bug SGS 3 is perfect.

Also there's a option the settings to make the keyboard one handed operational that can change from the left side of the screen for lefties or to the right for righties.
Depends when it comes out and how much it'll cost off contract

I would buy one. Brother has one on AT&T . I think I could get used to the size. I think it's a good balance between tablet and phone.

There comes a time when you need to say that a phone is to big. Some already say that about the S3, I think the S3 is perfect. I do say that a 5.5" screen is to big for me. I would not want to carry that around all day with me. If I am in a meeting and want to take my phone out to look at something, I don't want to be pulling out a tablet under the table.
I can see why people do like this device but for me, it is a no. I don't even have a little bit of an urge to get it. I am so happy with the S3.
to me the entire thing is a disaster. Not the phone, but the manner in which this is going down. The note 2 will have the quad core exynos processor with LTE support, and the kicker is already preloaded with jellybean. Outside of the debate of screen size, the phones specs beat out the GSIII. Seems like this so quickly outside of the SGSIII release just is unsettling.
I love the gs3 but when the note 2 comes out im all over it. I wish they wouldn't have passed on the original note. I just want a huge gigantic screen like that.

from what i read verizon is not getting the note2, but they will be dropping a lg device thats 5+" screen to compete...i could care less really, im content with the s3.

My choice would be the one. I like the LCD screen found on the DNA. I have alot of faith in the 4 Ultra pixel camera. I want a phone that doesn't feel like a child's toy. The quadrant scores on the One were amazing, although I'm sure the S4 will come close. What would you choose?
FYI: all phones have ultra pixels, however there 1.1. The ones found on the One are 2.0. Just saying

Currently on an htc phone and with HTCs inability to update software in a timely fashion that makes me question them all together.
I have a samsung tablet but I am leaning towards the S4 due to samsung overall being the better product and updating things in a timely manner.
It took htc nearly a year to get ics on this and it's horrible for everything.
Go with Samsung. Overall it's just better supported and more highly recognized

Wondering what was so bad with ICS? I have an Amaze the wife uses and runs fine, funny she has actually had 3 OTA updates compared to my two on my s3.
I can't wait till the One drops! Definitely my next phone for sure.
Oh and you think HTC uses plastic now? The One is all aluminum....wow, so misinformed....

Well currently the htc one isn't available on my carrier. So the best phone available is the S3 and soon to be S4. I don't hate htc I just could care less to stick with them

The event for the unpacking of the GS4 was ridiculous! Seriously I watched the hole "show" and I was awaiting for the new killer feature that would erase the concurrents.
First of all, the design. Some of you may say "don't change the lineup of a working team" but personally I'm tired of the same designs with Samsung devices lately. It's the same on the GS3, on the note 2 and now on the GS4 ? Show some innovation Samsung!
I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built.
HTC really got that and the amazing device that is the ONE is the proof.
You can't say "yeah I choose my device because it'll have more updates!". Wrong!
Every high marketed device comes with killer features ! 2gb of RAM? That's normal now. 32 or 64 gb of storage / 5 inch screen? Normal too...
The thing is they all look alike in a hardware point of view, that's why nowadays the design is very important.
A good design means a device built with beautiful and premium materials and that the device's design changes from the device that came out before.
Samsung didn't get that. Although the S series of Samsung is gonna sell at uncomputable numbers every one knows that, I don't think it's a major need to upgrade from the s3 to S4 because I just don't see the point except waisting money.
I think it may attract some of those who will walk in a store and see the device (thanks to the amazing job of marketing that Samsung always does) but for those who were waiting it to be a great and revolutionary device, the disappointment is the real feeling.
HTC ONE is the killer smartphone of 2013's beginning, sorry Samsung you'll do better next time. Or not ^^

Really the iPhone is a better built phone? It's built in the same foreign countries with the same parts except for the processor. IPhones are boring useless pieces of crap

Me getting S4. Although HTC One has better build quality but for everything else, HTC is not the company I would bet on. It will probably never get updates after one or two.
On the other side Samsung is adding more and more features in each update and from last year when I purchased S3, I already got 3-4 updates. Plus they already working on another one with all these latest features.
On hardware side, I think S4 has upper hand on HTC One. Battery is larger, processor is faster, S4 Screen is bigger but phone is little smaller. S4 Screen is better. Not to mention expendable microSD slot and replaceable battery.
So I would not want a phone with better built quality but strong specs and better features.
I think that's the main reason why I switched from iPhone to S3 in the first place. I know a lots of people might hate me for saying this but iPhone has best build quality among all phones out there.
So definitely Galaxy S4.

what HTC have done with the ONE is ground breaking on both hardware and software,no other company has changed its hardware software so radically from its previous flagship device.With out HTC and the like apple and samsung's upgrades would be even less

iPhones honestly aren't worth the price no matter how discounted they are.
While they may be built better your comparing apples to oranges. No pun intended on the apple thing.
But really I think we can all mostly agree here that android overall is better.

Well it's probably true for new buyers. But for a experienced users, it matters.
When I switched S3 from iPhone, I didn't actually know about all this. I had option to choose S3 or HTC One X and I went with S3 because it's more popular and had better support.
From what I learn in last year, I could never buy HTC or Motorola phones.
These companies never support their devices. They even lock bootloaders so we cannot update our devices ourself or install updated custom roms.
I am also a little disappointed with S4 release but I would pick S4 over HTC one any day.

Yea I've completely gone away from Motorola all together myself and that's a selling point for me being able to root my phone and changing it around nearly completely

This was exactly like last year for me.
I wanted a phone with huge storage capacity/microSD capacity and long battery life/removable battery with decent specs. And QWERTY but I have given up on the last thing.
The HTC One X was released and as pretty as the White one was, it definitely was not a purchase I was willing to make and I waited for the Samsung Galaxy S3 announcement. The announcement came and Samsung gave me what I wanted. I bought the S3.
Fast forward this year. HTC One announced. Still no microSD slot but looks like decent battery life. Looks very pretty too (I still think the white One X is the best looking HTC phone though). Not bad this time around HTC but let's wait to hear from Samsung. S4 gets announced and again, they have what I want from last year.
If I was choosing again between HTC or Samsung this year: Samsung Galaxy S4 because it has what I want from last year.
Luckily I want more stuff this year which is why I'm not going to buy a S4. My S3 is lovely and I don't need to buy an S4. However, I now really want a bigger screen. This year, I'll be looking to buy a Note 3 or competitor version as long as it has a huge screen, huge capacity/microSD, huge battery.
Honestly, I don't care what company you are or even what your phone looks like (I bought the S3 for god sakes). Just give me what I want and I'd buy it. I'm also eyeing the Blackberry Q10 simply because of the QWERTY but I think my lust for a bigger screen will win out. Plus the stylus is alright...right?

No, I am not saying, I am upgrading S4 from S3. But I would pick S4 over HTC One.
I will probably get Note 3. I also do not rule out possibility to get S4, if I get some cool discount.
I bought S2 just after S3 came out. I thought to myself - who needs these modifications, S2 will do the work and will cost less.
Ow, I was wrong.
Now S4 is the latest cry. I wish I had money for all of Samsung gadgets!
What I heard so far about the S4 - the specs/advantages are not that big compared with the S3. Most of the announced features are app driven and I wil never go to use the stock roms and the manufacturer apps - I prefer to go with custom roms.
I will not be one of the early adopters ...
Except for the bragging right S4 is not much better that the S2.
S2 can do anything s4 can do and is lighter.

I don't want to bash the S2, but really?
I guess it depends on what you need on a phone, and I do understand you trying to justify keeping the S2 instead of buying a new one, but you cannot deny that the S4 is a lot better than the S2 in almost every single area (things improve quickly in mobile phones hardware, so in about 2 years, a lot has changed).
My girlfriend has the gs2 and it's not even in the same league as the gs3. The gs4 is better than the gs3, so it might be a bigger upgrade than you think.

S4 can be used as a tv remote via the infared thingy...and most things the s2 can do...well the s4 will be able to do it better/faster/smoother

I can totally see what he is saying. For the average person the LG dare would be MORE than enough phone and doo what they need to do even compared too the sgs3. But I will be UPGRADING from my sgs3 to the s4 on launch day because I want a higher res screen, larger screen, processor, gpu, camera, gimmicky? Features.the ability to say.hey i have an s4 and you have an s2. Sure they can do most the same things. But my s4 it's gonna do it blazing fast and look better while i do it inside that gigantic case I'm going to put it in and hide all the pretty.

Saying S4 is not really different from S2 is like saying a computer based on the 3rd generation Core i7 is not that different from a Pentium D, either plain ignorance or just in denial. Raw specs alone will make many things that require raw processing power possible. A denser display means better experience to the eye, especially for the elderly if they wish to zoom heck in for text. There's just so much you can do with better hardware, just compare how choppy Android even back when S2 was released. S3 and same gen phone is the turning point where Android starts to have a more fulfilling user experience. Now S4, One, Optimus Pro improves it even further and I think this is pretty much a transitional stage where wearable device is going to be the hot item next year instead of a piece of monolithic plastic with giant display slapped onto it.

Yet you still need to tweak it. For people here, yes it might be an easy feat to do, but for many other normal customers ? Out of the box experience might not give us the true potential of a phone but normal customers will be turned off by choppy stock performance. I really hate it when people here only see it from the view point of people who have the know how to tweak their phones.
If humanity has the mentality like this, I doubt we would even see smartphone which has monster spec rivaling that of a notebook which is many times larger and heavier. I doubt humanity itself will progress for the better. Why should I settle for inferior experience when there is something better in front of me ?
So, basically, my 2012 iMac is really no different from the old iMac that used PowerPC processors, just because both can surf the web? Sometimes, these things just need plain raw power. And btw, I would say that the S4 is a good device to upgrade to from a 2011 device.
Sure, my arc s runs fine on Jb 4.2.2 for everyday usage with a couple init.d tweaks and some mods. But the newer phones are just going to be faster and more efficient. You can't argue with that.

And I love playing games like Mc4 and Shadowgun but I can't because my phone just can't handle that. Find me a way to run MC4 on my phone without going back to GB and I will not upgrade to the s4.
