Hello,
With the newest Google Chrome beta, we sadly still (and probably won't ever) have the feature to add a custom search engine to Google Chrome for Android.
I was looking for a possibility and got it working, with a little problem (mentioned at 6.) someone here hopefully is able to fix.
Now, let the tutorial begin:
What you need:
- Rooted Phone
- File Explorer which is able to get root access, for example: Solid Explorer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...plorer&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
- Latest Google Chrome Beta for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...biflipde&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=blog
1. Open Solid Explorer, browse to following directory and file:
"/data/data/com.chrome.beta/app_chrome/Default/Preferences"
2. Open "Preferences" with a text editor
3. Search following entries:
"last_known_google_url"
and
"last_prompted_google_url"
4. I will use DuckDuckGo as example. "https://www.duckduckgo.com/?q=" is the encrypted search string for DuckDuckGo, that's why I'll use this now.
Change from:
"last_known_google_url": "http://www.google.com/"
"last_prompted_google_url": "http://www.google.com/"
To:
"last_known_google_url": "https://www.duckduckgo.com/?q="
"last_prompted_google_url": "https://www.duckduckgo.com/?q="
5. Save it
6. Now, the problem is following:
If you enter a search string in Chrome now, it will use DuckDuckGo for it. That's what we wanted, right?
The search you did for example is "Test123"
But DuckDuckGo is searching for "search?q=Test123"
Google Chrome puts a "search?q=" in front of your search.
Could someone please tell me how to fix this? I'll add it in front to the thread here then and we'll have a solution for our custom search engine in Google Chrome for Android!

Just to show my interest, I'm replying to this thread. I want to use DDG as my default as well. I dislike how Google continuously redirects you to the local country page when traveling. Also the fact that SSL searches on Google are blocked in countries that shall not be named.
I haven't tested what you wrote but I'll try it the next chance I get.
Nice to see there is some interest!
Hopefully we'll be able to fix the problem at number 6. in my HowTo.
BUMP
Isn't anyone else interested?

Awfully quiet in here. Apparently everyone on XDA using Chrome is satisfied using Google search...of course having options are preferable. At least desktop Chrome allows the default to be changed to a third party engine of our choosing. What gives Google?

BUMP again... :crying:
Thanks for the fix. I had downloaded chrome beta in another country and it was stuck using the Google site for that country.
Thanks for help !
This is the reason i'm not using Chrome, I'm Canadian but I live in China and Chrome keeps redirecting to Honk Kong (freaking annoying). I tried again from the Philippines but now it's redirecting to Php. I tried your solution but it doesn't work. I really think this is a MUST from a web browser. With the other browser I just set my first page to be www.google.com/ncr but we cant even set the fisrt page in Chrome.
I still don't have a solution for this.
We have the newest chrome beta 26 now, also a stable version which got a great update so far, but still no possibility for a custom search engine.
Please, is someone able to find a solution for this? I want my duckduckgo integrated into chrome for android.

Me too. Currently currently in China and being redirected to HK site. Using that NCR trick is the only way. Of course after awhile have to do it again. But this happens on desktop as well so I think it's generally a cookie/time limit problem.
BTW what browser do you use? The cool thing about Chrome right now is you can turn on proxying using Google's servers and you can visit banned websites (e.g. nytimes, etc) over plain http only. Saves time sometimes instead of connecting to VPN for a quick lookup.

Could you perhaps persuade ddg to implement this? If a query string is included then it should search for that instead of the final directory they currently search on.
new here, sorry cannot post links....
Change the last_known_google_url" to: "https:// w w w . d u c k d u c k g o . c o m / " and not to last_known_google_url": " h t t p s : / / w w w . d u c k d u c k g o . c o m / ?q="
Yes, I am very interested in this. I've been using Firefox for a long time, but it has become very buggy and crashy, and I miss DuckDuckGo on Chrome. I've read somewhere that Chrome's source is available somewhere, I will try to download it tomorrow and change some stuff regarding the search.
I am trying to do it with StartPage.com but instead of searching it just goes to the mobile page and it doesn't even adds he search on the pages search bar.
I would very much appreciate this feature as well. Wanted to use DuckDuckGo in Chrome Android and though I was blind, but I guess Chrome for Android does not let you use any custom search engine (and I'm sure Google is doing anything they can to not add it as an option).
Sorry for necromancing the thread, but it's still a very important issue IMO.

sounds like it would work to me. but i don't know a thing about how all that works. id try it tho
To prevent Chrome from jumping to url of countries you don't want, you can do the following "fix".
1. Go to google.com/ncr
2. Search something, whatever... Test123
3. Kill the app from recents
4. Clear cache
5. Search from the ssearch bar
6. Chrome will ask you if you want to continue using google.com as your default search site or the stupid dot something one...
About the change of search engine, I'm here for that too

Have you tried Opera Mini? If you are worried about your data usage, I think you'll love its server-side compression technology. Well, depending in what are your feelings about your browsing privacy.
I know I can disable images, and yes, I tried a couple of browsers with server-side compression, but I was really hoping for the plain simplicity of a Lynx-like app. Thanks for the replies so far!

Hm, SSH to your home pc eh? Tell me more.

The other thing you might consider is RSS. I read a lot of websites like this. Most major news websites now support RSS. Good luck. Lynx is hard to read and manage as it was designed for an earlier implementation of the web.
I wonder if it isn't easy to do since 1) it's all open source and 2) it should be a textbook JNI port...

There are some instructions here, in chinese. If anyone does get a working binary, let us know;
http://www.embedu.org/Column/Column294.htm
Update: I followed the instructions, and it works. Here are the results:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
I read through the instructions... Very nice and detailed directions there! However, they're not even using the NDK, they're compiling an ARM executable for Lynx (so if we go that route, the result would be a binary that has to be run from terminal emulator).
Food for thought...
Binary compiled successfully!
Done it!
I just followed the instruction from the chinese professor, and it works fine for me. I have created a tread for it at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
The zip file is there, along with the instructions. Enjoy!

TextOnly browser for android which displays only content from the article by stripping ads, scripts and images
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.spacenext.textonly
There was something i used to do when i was browsing using an old Nokia dumbphone that might help.
Type the following into your address bar:
http://www.google.com/xhtml
Now search for the site you want to visit, i.e xda-developers, and click on the link. You should now be seeing it in a low data format. It's not pretty but it works pretty well on a mobile browser.
If you want you can then bookmark the site as it is, so that it will still have that formatting when you return to it next. Obviously, for every site you want to visit you have to go through the above, but if you also bookmark the xhtml version of google you can always start your browsing session from there and just bookmark all your reformatted favourites as you go.
For that mobile view you can just use the "mobile view (GWT)" option in Dolphin Browser HD

Little Web Browser is pretty similar to Lynx. Free, but a HUGE fee if you want to get rid of the ads.
It is amazing how you'll always have at least one idiot in almost every forum who has no clue to what the correct answer might be but instead of shutting his ugly mug he tries to be a smart-ass and suggest a retarded "solution" that the OP had already discarded even before he asked. "Eh, why don't you disable images on Opera? (monkey squeaks)" ... well no ****tard, that's not a solution not even a proper answer to the question.
I have a URL launcher app and need help with some codes..
Someone made for me a URL launcher application. This app makes a web page is run inside of the app window, it dosent launch the defult browser.
But the problem is.. downloads do not work inside of this app... It only works when the website is running in the full browser,,, But I dont want that.. I want the download to be supported inside of this app.
Is there any html codes or scrip that i can use in my web page to make it launch the original browser from the phone, so any files can be download it in the phone..?
This is importan because I want to run a website to host my documents , apps and my files.
I don't want to use a URL launcher application that calls the defult browser or launch the defult browser, because everyone will know the url address from my website..
In the bottom of this post is the link to download my app..
Please someone letme know how can I make it to support download in this app.
I hope there is a way to insert some type of code in my downloads web page , so everytime someone clicks the link, the code will call / launch the android browser so the download can be suported.
Here is the link of the app..
Please go to download shortcut and choose android shortcut for testing... You will see that the download dont work in this app frame... It only works in full android browser..

It would seem that this is just a browser bug. I have the same problem when trying to upload files from the default browser. I always need to use opera or dolphin to upload. If you want send me the url that ur trying to access and I will play with it from there. But don't expect much. I doubt it will work. But ill try.

I don't think is a browser bug because the app is not a web browser... I don't know how it works but sometype ob browser runs inside of the app, because you can see the website running inside and fits perfect.. the only problem is that it dosent support downloads....
Basically what happens is a small version of the browser runs inside the app. A webview is what its called. And they are pretty limited. So its possible in webview that maybe downloads are disabled.

Hmm, no luck...
Galaxy Nexus OR Transformer Prime + "lay" = not found in store.
In strings (eng):
"link href" = "Address"
I think there should be an 'add' button for new plates and links (not only menu | add...).
Perhaps for "add new..." links change the order? e.g. Title | Address | Plate
I think import from bookmarks is quite important also.
Keep going...

I figure out why My phone even can't find my own app in play store.
I made 3 config change
1.

High Maturity
Medium Maturity
Low Maturity
Everyone
i set them Everyone first ,now I set them Low Maturity
2.
I set my app minsdk to level 3 which mean android 1.5.
3.
I adjust key words and i can find app by key word "lay123"
"lay" have too much search result
and there are some images may help show how app store works.
I find when i can find the app in the wep store ,i can find the app in the app store.
just one thing wep store has a device filter "all device" or "my phone"
when choose mu phone ,it will filter some app that not match you phone..
and with right key word ,I'm sure you can find app in web store and then also in the app store

hi ~ I got new version for you ~
hope you can see this message
For some reason today, when I type a search query or URL in the address bar in Chrome, no predictions are coming up. I have the 'Search and URL suggestions' box ticked in settings/privacy.
I tried switching the search engine to Yahoo instead of Google and started getting suggestions again, but I much prefer the suggestions that Google makes. I've tried restarting my phone, clearing data from Chrome in Apps, Force closing Chrome, uninstalling updates to Chrome etc. Nothing.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get address bar predictions to come back?
Thanks
Same issue here.

I've got the same issue too, and just noticed this today! But I have an HTC One M8 (AT&T version).
See my Google product forums post about this:
https://productforums.google.com/fo...e=footer#!msg/chrome/xTTHziAr1C0/9b7w4CHSiQYJ
Maybe if others reply to my thread on there (stating that you also have the problem) Google will take notice of it?
Interestingly the search suggestions *do* show up if I use Google Now or Firefox or default HTC browser, or pretty much in any other app (even Google Play) that uses Google search. Just not in Chrome (any more).
As my thread says, it *used* to work in Chrome just fine. If I try to "uninstall" Chrome, meaning roll it back to the oldest default version that came with the phone, then Google search suggestions again work just fine. But then soon Chrome auto-updates and it doesn't work again.
So… since I'm not the only one experiencing this, I'm thinking that a recent Chrome update must have caused this, in which case a lot more people should be noticing it soon… I hope. I'm not sure when the latest Chrome update was, or if this only effects certain devices, or what.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please share!
thanks

So I looked further into it, and it's "Google Instant" and apparently it'snot working on a bunch of phones, including the LG G2... I can't tell if its an LG thing or Android thing. Apparently Chrome Beta has this issue as well... but not on my Chrome Desktop
Can confirm this started happening to my phone too. Seems to be a problem with clearing history too. Weird.

I get this to. I think it started last night. If i uninstall and go back to the preinstalled chrome found in kitkat 4.4.2 it works fine. Or if I switch to bing as search engine It will work.
trying to google it I'm not getting too much for this. So I'm thinking it might be just us 4.4.2 users???
Hope it gets fixed soon

I too am having similar issues and can't find a single suggestion that fixes the problem. When I type in the address bar, auto suggestions do appear, but they are only from my search history and bookmarks. None of them are search suggestions like when using google.com.
I did follow the instructions provided to enable Google Suggestions in the address bar, then use Ctrl+K to place the cursor in the Omnibox to conduct a search, and begin to enter query you will receive query suggestions. That is, when Google.com is the default search engine.

I can not get the app to install. I'm on a J7 2107. So that maybe my issue. But I've given XDA lab permission to install from unknown sources. But it still fails right after i hit the continue button.

Try v7a version from the google drive link present on the post
Take some suggestions and inspiration from the app "torrSE" and you'll get a huge user base

I'll definitely help you. The first thing I noticed in your app is that the number of websites the query searches for is really limited.
2. The search input seems to be very specific.
For eg. I searched for "extraction" and the results came up but when I searched for "extracting hdr" there was nothing in the results.
Hope these help.

Thanks for the suggestions
For the 1st point I am working on adding new providers as much as possible and they are currently so less because 2 of the providers recently stopped working so I removed them. Although I will add new constantly.
And on 2nd point I don't think I can do much because the query directly gets passed to search engines and results came from them is shown here and if you put a query which gives nothing then try putting less complicated query in search box and then in results page you can filter out the torrents using filter input field (search icon in top).

If the providers stop working then I suggest add the option to edit the provider by the user. TorrSE has this feature.
2nd... I've tried 1 or 2 torrent search engine and they all search these kind of queries.

1. Bro there is option to turn on/off search providers manually. I just removed them because if user keeps them on, it will just increase the search time unnecessarily becase it aint gonna give any result so even if it consumes 2 seconds to fetch (empty) results its a waste of that 2 seconds (for every not working search provider) every time user searches anything.
2. I cant do anything about this though bro. Other apps might give result maybe because there are more search providers in that app (this will be solved once I add more search providers),
or maybe you put slightly different query there (as you wrote extracting hdr, the movie name is extraction not extracting)

Lol my bad. But I did add extraction, it was just a typo here.
You have the option to turn search provider on or off but I'm talking about editing the link for that provider. Coz you know government always block official websites.
I had less option for search result than TorSe app. Most of the time I don't find what I'm looking for. Maybe the problem lies with search keywords?

Bro the app have that link change feature also
I removed them because one engine stopped working permanently (switched to completely different site actually i.e. idope => torrentz2k)
and other engine change whole structure of their site (the pirate bay) and any link change wont affect anything.
And second thing is the app gives results for me on "extraction hdr"
Are you on latest version of app?
If not then update the app
If yes then check by turning on/off search providers and see which one is not working for you
and change the url of that engine accordingly
The app also has Test url feature so just check it from there before putting the url there
Edit - Good news, I found the old tpb link and it is working properly now
So in the next update you will have TPB back

Try to keep search query short and simple you can filter the results of your liking in results screen
Actually recently The pirate bay stopped working in my app since the site structure changed fully
and it was very good site for torrents so thats why results are less
But keep the app updated I am adding new search providers for more results
Edit - Good news, I found the old tpb link and it is working properly now

If you have that issue with engine being disabled then I suggest adding loads of websites is the best option.
For hdr thing I changed the website link and it works now. I'm adding 2 screenshots for the same query. Your apps font is too big, which gives less information at a given time.
And sometimes I want the result from a specific website. Now in torrSE it's easy. Instead of scrolling down to that website, it should be on the tabs.
If you want I can give you every working torrent website so you can add them.
