So Hawk2k8 posted a guide on how to get the 3G Xoom to work on another carrier. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1016158
My question is, if we buy a Verizon 3G SIM card, can we use it on our WiFi only Xoom? What are the hardware/software differences between the 3G version and the WiFi version? Can we activate 3G on our WiFi-Only version by flashing it with the 3G image and adding a Verizon 3G SIM card?
Thanks!
Answer
It is not possible to "activate" 3G mobile data on the WiFi Only Motorola XOOM. The WiFi only XOOM does not have the hardware required to connect to any mobile data networks. If you want to use data on the go, but only have a WiFi only XOOM I suggest you purchase a MiFi Wireless Hotspot device. Also, I would suggest you don't flash the system image from the Verizon XOOM, this could lead to a bricked XOOM.
What is missing from the WiFi version? Just the SIM card or more hardware than that?

Doesn't even have the 3g radio hardware in it. You'd have as much luck inserting a CD ROM into it and getting it to work as you would trying to use it to get 3g service

You would need to have a 3G radio.
lol he said a verizon 3g sim card. *slits wrists and runs through raccoon city singing we are the world"

wifi only has a slot infront of the sd card but no radio. do with that as you will lol.
you can use it to hold tiny crackers if you want
bahah why would they even put a place to insert a sim card on the wifi only?

Bwaaaaaahahaha no connection port there though. Just looked. Space there though. So i assume one could buy a radio and put it there. Lol.. or use it to store Barbie accessories.

I assume making another bezel that would remove that slot but still have access to the microSD would cost too much to justify.

You've hit the nail on the head. That's what i do.. why get a contract?? I must say be cafeful. I'm pushing 2gb of data almost after only three days of about three hours of use tethered to my Mytouch 4G. Crazy huh? So if you're on a verizon or att phine tethering i warn you. Beware of overages or T-Mobile's 2gb throttle.

i beg to differ
I have a wifi only xoom, and it does indeed have a sim card tray as well as the connectors. Now it might not have a "3G" radio in it as other have said. Which I find questionable. The reason is that i know these thing are mass produce, and as stated above, it will cost motorola alot more to produce a seperate line of production.
So it make sense for both version to have similar hardware. If motorola did indeed open a seperate production line to remove or not add the 3G radio, then they could have easily use that same oppertunity to disconnet the sim tray or it's connectors. Now lets assumed they don,t have a "3G" radio 3G being the main focus, could it still work with other sim card that are not 3G and don't require a 3G radio? Like the good old 2G or Edge.
If that't not an option, Well there are several more options. The same way you have to send the 3G Xoom in for the hardware upgrade to 4G, does that not mean you can shop online for a 2G, 3G, or even 4G and do your own upgrade. Because worse case they remove the 3G radio, the slot is still there the connectors are still on the motherboard. Ifixit has a tear down.
But I personally think it's all in the gut of xoom, motorola just disable it so that it can't be active. Am not a programmer, but I believe in the long run, the wifi xoom owners will be the winner. Why? Well because for one it was $200 cheaper, even if you have to buy a radio in the future it will cost less or maybe pull one off an old cellphone (jk). And you didn't pay all that money under contract for 2 long years.
Now this is all an opinion so I don't wanna hear anyone being super technical and breaking it down, cuz am not a programmer or a repair guy, but am a hopeful owner if a Wifi Only Xoom.

Looking at the price break down for parts: google: xoom costs $278
it looks to be about $20+ for the 3g radio that they put in the xoom if they put that in the wifi models aswell they would be loosing all that money, im pretty sure they would not do that.. and it doesn't take much for them to set their assembly robots to not add that part in, also that could be why they are released at different times. Different assembly procedures. Just a thought
theres a mini pci-e slot maybe we can install 3g radio just like laptop
This is really a possibility for the wifi xoom?
I imported mine from the US to Oz, are there any differences in bandwidth between 3G US and 3G Oz?

hello all
about sd card slot, as i see in forum, it's not usable yet. why? that is a lack of hardware and will be usable after 4g upgrade? or it's just a software issue and can be used with hacking android?
and another question, the 4g will be available after hardware upgrade. how about 3g? is hardware needed for 3g , 2g (gprs) installed on device? i mean is it possible to use 3g with hacking software or it's lack of hardware
thanks in advance

4G is a pure hardware issue. Hardware changes need to be made, that is why the 4G upgrade, when it happens, will require the Xoom's to be brought into service centers. Nothing you do to the software can add 4G.
As for 3G, it is also a hardware question. If you bought a 3G Xoom, you have the proper hardware for 3G...if you bought a WiFi Xoom, you do not. No hacking possible or required.
If you want 3G and bought a WiFi Xoom there is a very easy fix however. Put the WiFi version on Ebay or give it to someone, and go buy a 3G model.
Quick and easy, all fixes should be like that.

Then I would suggest checking with your carrier.
Im from iran. Here we have not 3g carrier yet. Both operators here are 2g network. The carrier i use, the network is EDGE, cannot i use mysim card for gprs internet? Just like gprs in htc.
And also in setting, mobile network, i see an activation. What is that? I didnt activated yet. Is it activation for verizon carrier just in us?
For using other carrier device should be unlocked like God dang iphone or ... ?
stock browser
Also another question. I installed a few browsers but the best browser is the stock. The only problem with it is typing, for example just now, i'm wroting this o xoom but writting speed on stock browser is very very slow
What is the problem? Is there any solution? Or any better browser?
also i forgot to say that my rom is stock rom and not rooted yet

Typing lag is a known issue on the Xoom. Are you running 3.0.1 or 3.1? Most people say it improves with 3.1. YOu can also try rooting and installing one of the custom kernels with overclocking, either Tiamat or Launchpad. The Tiamat kernel cleared it up for me, even with moderate overclocking (1200 on mine, usually).
Lots of guides here to help you upgrade, root or install either kernel.

I can't say for sure, as I have a WiFI only model. Likely the Activation option is relevant for Verizon only, but put the SIM card in and choose the option, see what happens. I would assume that if your SIM card is legit, then it should work on the Xoom, but this is unknown territory for me.
Anyone using a 3G Xoom with gprs?
i use my sim card with my htc hd2 (android), i'm using gprs a lot on it
and how about sd card slot, the reason it doesnt work is lack of hardware or can be done with software hacking?

The lack of an SD card is a software issue. Use the Tiamat or Launchpad custom kernels to enable it.
ok so i noticed today on my wifi only xoom, that it has the port for the sim card in it, is there a way to enable this so i can use 3g?
or is it permanently disabled?
any help is appreciated

Yea, I believe that the radio is missing from the wingray version.

bought a nexus s with a properly smashed screen off ebay and replaced it with a new one. when i insert sim card and search for a network it says cannot connect to network please try later. does this mean its been imie blocked?? bit pissed off to be fair but hey ho always a gamble when you get off ebay
I believe that you would still have to activate that with carrier and if it's blocked they can tell you

This sounds like a job for Odin. Get the newest factory image from here and be sure you flash everything....rom, kernel and radio, especially! This is the best way to see if it's a firmware or hardware issue. If it still happens after a factory flash you'll know it's hardware related.
Hey everyone, new to the Photon Q part of the forums. I got this phone for free, and don't have Sprint in my area. So I would like to use it as a media player (mostly music, maybe a few games, videos, and books).
My question is this: Is there a ROM that can disable the cellular radio only, and leaves the bluetooth and wifi alone? I don't need a fancy, skinned, flashy ROM, just a basic Cyanogen or AOSP ROM that is as stock android as I can get.
Basically I want to turn this phone into a tablet without using "airplane mode."
Is this possible?
Thanks much for any info!
Why don't you just flash CM, enable Airplane Mode, then flip on wifi and BT with quick tiles?
Not sure what else you really would prefer... There's not going to be a ROM out there that specifically disables the cell radio. Does having it on bother you?

I wanted to get as much battery life out of it as possible, I guess. If I enable airplane mode, then turn on the wifi, will it come out of airplane mode and turn on the cellular too?
Actually, I think what you propose isn't that bad really. I can leave it in airplane mode most of the time, then when I want wifi I can just turn it on and do what I need to do, and when I'm done just put it back into airplane mode again. If the cell radio is on at the same time I suppose it won't be that bad.

Well that is very interesting. I still have to fix the phone, that's why I got it for free. But as soon as it's up and running again I will certainly give that a try.
If I could ask another quick question, I was wondering about the micro SD card 32gb limit. Is it really limited? I wanted to put a 64gb card in it for music. Is it hardware limited, or was it a limit in the stock ROM?

You can put a 64gb card in, I think it just has to be formatted FAT32.

OK, thanks for the info.
Sorry for taking this thread off topic, but I have a couple more questions and I didn't want to make a whole new thread for them.
I finally got the phone fixed and am getting ready to install clockworkmod and a probably CM 10.1.
First thing is I cannot figure out whether this phone is GSM or CDMA. It's Sprint, and from what I understand Sprint is CDMA, but both on the back and in "about phone" it says it's an xt897, not xt897c. A regular xt897 is GSM, and an xt897c would be CDMA, right? In the network settings I have the option to use CDMA and GSM networks.
Which version of android should I install?
Second, would I get an unlocked bootloader by installing clockworkmod recovery?
Thanks
The Phone is dual standard, is both CDMA and GSM capable (although the stock phone lacks a proper sim slot).
And the stock ROM is able to manage either kind of networks.
BTW (usually) the phone is used only in one of them.
Americans will use CDMA and rest of the world users (most of it anyway) will use the GSM capabilities.
Only the US citizen who travel in Europe or other GSM lands can take advantage of a dual standard phone.
So, some of the aftermarket roms are built in single standard configuration, and are aimed to the different usage scenarios.
Obviously, for an usage like the one are you asking for, you couldn't care less about the radio standard, just use the rom you like, and (if you want), use tasker alone or tasker+secure settings plugin to turn off automagically the cellular radio, when the smartphone is booted.

The opposite way.
You have to unlock the phone to flash a proper recovery
OK, thanks for the info.
I unlocked the phone, which was quite time consuming but I figured it out.
Then I installed clockworkmod, which went perfect.
Then I installed Skrilax_CZ's version of CM 10.1, and it works perfectly.
Thanks for all the help, guys. Much appreciated.
