[Q] MultiScreen - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Note 10.1 (UK) N 8010 running jellybean 4.1.1 via OTA
My problem I can not see Multi screen function on any of the Samsung apps ie Gallery, Snote, Video . Do I have to activate it in settings? I have looked and can not see any mention of it. Looking at Youtube videos it is always on the top bar within the applications that support it, but alas not on mine. Am I missing something basic?

All the apps that can be used with multi screen can be found by pressing the upside down v icon that permanently sits in the middle of the very bottom of the screen. You should have seen this in all the vids you have watched. Once you click that, all the apps pop up and you can click on the one you want.
You can make it full screen by clicking the rectangle on the right, next to the close icon. When In full screen you should see the multi screen icon to the far right, its the last icon.....it looks like two rectangles....one in front of the other. You don't have to activate it....at least I never did.
Can you see it now?

Thanks for reply, the videos I have seen all show show multi screen icon on the top bar, on further research I know see the option is indeed in the upside down v icon with a choice for the Now called Dual View or Cascade View.
The Videos I watched all showed the dual view icon on the top ba,r not hidden in the pop up bottom bar far left hand corner, and to be honest when viewing videos to me anyway looked like two different features.
Thanks again for your help, the videos on Youtube all seem to be from 2 months ago ie not UK version.

The upside down v, (multi screen app tray) has always been on the note....even in ICS. But you quire rightly noticed that the multi screen icon in full screen apps has changed, and moved to the far right in the latest firmware. So basically all the apps that have the multi screen functionality can be accessed from the pop up tray at the bottom of any screen, that will open them in a small window that can be moved and resized. Then you can change it back and forth to full screen or small window as you wish using the icon on the top right actually in the app.
The 'dual view/cascade view' option on the bottom right of the multi screen app tray you talk about was not in the older firmware at all......you just opened a multiscreen app from the multiscreen app tray (upside down v), and then changed to full screen or dual view from within the app. I can understand why it was confusing.

Just to confirm my confusion every time I selected the multi screen icon it would just reduce in size (small and float about) not like I saw in the Youtube Videos ie snap into place half screen. So when I found the cascade/dual view icon (bottom left hand corner The upside down v, multi screen app tray) set it to dual view foolishly thinking that was correct! NO. Then I changed it to Cascade view but showing the matching two box overlay icon. YES.
Confusion Rules OK
Thanks Again.

Oh well. At least now you know you were watching Notes with old firmware and outdated features. Your firmware version with Dual view AND cascade view is sooo much better.
Here's an overview of what you can do with the multi view apps.....if you haven't already found a video ........ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FOmb-9bI6s&feature=youtube_gdata_player.

It's always visible in snote and the other compatible apps. Have a look at the screen shot I posted further up this post. It is at the top, on the far right of the apps. It looks like two rectangles.....one infront of the other.

Just tried it. Looks like the answer is no.
Nope, You can only have one browser and one other selected app i. e. polaris office, video player, email,S-note or gallery. You may be able to use a pop up browser avaiable on google Play and use this as a second browser.
Edit:
l have just tried my suggestion above and can confirm that it is possible by installing a third party pop up browser. The one I am using is called "Onskreen Browser", I have attached a screenshot that shows two browsers and the S-pen app loaded side by side.
Thanks. That will be a good work around.
This is interesting and can be very useful!

Here is a question regarding this?
Does one of the browsers have to be the stock browser to get it to split screen?
Also if you have a the note app open and some other app that supports split, then you open chrome and firefox in separate windows, can you make one of those windows go on one side of the screen and the other window on the other side?
I am work and my note is waiting for me at home, so after work I will have it.

The split screen will only work with the Samsung apps that have been designed to work in split screen mode, the stock browser is the one that Samsung have enabled which means the chrome browser unfortunately will not work in this way. The pop up browser works similar to the pop up video player where it runs on top of all other apps.
I hope the dev team will have a work around with this.
The split screen will be very powerful will two browsers opened at once, and trading tool platform.

ya i know that it works only with samsung apps, but I am still unclear about the 2nd question I asked. Let's I say have the note app and the stock browser open one on each split screen. Can I then open up another browser on top of it via a window on each side of the split?

Unless its how I have demonstrated it on my screenshot then at present the answer is no, a developer or Samsung's developers may incorporate it in the future.

Cool so technically you could have 2 different browser open on different sides of the split screen as long as you have 2 apps that support split screen open

Split Browser
Great discussion!
Both Note 10.1 tablet and Note 2 phone, which support split screen don't allow you to open the same browser app on either sides. You can open the stock browser in one side and Chrome on the other side. However you won't be able to open links from one app into the other half or share bookmarks... etc. They will function as two separate apps.
At Appestry we developed Split Browser to overcome these issues. Here are some of its unique features:
Open links and bookmarks from one half into the other half and/or in a new tab.
Resize the two browser halves by dragging the yellow divider line (just like in Note)
Watch videos in full view within each half.
Start new tabs and switch them between the two halves.
Copy the current page over to the other half.
Press and hold back/forward arrows to view history and jump to a page in the list.
... and a whole lot more.
Search for "Split Browser" in Google Play. There is a 5 minute trial version and a paid full version.
Hope y'all find it useful. Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback for improvements!

Thank you for trying it out. I agree, 5 minutes fly fast. However, you can reopen the app as many times you as want and continue to evaluate other features. We want users to make sure all the features work in their device before they upgrade. Please let us know if there is a particular feature you'd like to see in the app. We're working on adding more new features so stay tuned.
I love my Samsung Note II, way faster than my Note 1. Can't wait to test on the new S4. We're working to add Split Browser to the suite of Samsung's split screen apps.
Cheers!
I have 4 different web browsers installed in my GN10.
And I use Multi Window Manager too.
I can open all 4 browsers at the same time

[Solved] Air View pointer missing

Hello,
I just installed the new firmware upgrade to jelly bean, but i seem to have lost my little dot on the screen when i hover over it. It says
in the new pen settings page that it's a feature and should happen, but it doesn't.
Anything i can do to fix that ? it's a pretty solid feature i rely on a lot for drawing
EDIT: Request close!
For some reason i wasn't able to get into the air view settings until i reset it twice in a row with air view enabled, sorted now
Thanks Justinchi for replying

The little stylus tracking dot on the screen is missing on my note since the jellybean update. I can enable the airview functions okay & they all work but the little tiny dot that existed on ICS is not there when I hover the stylus over the screen. I miss this function especially when drawing or editing documents, has anyone still got this with Jellybean or has the feature been removed?

you have to long press the ''air view" option until it highlights in blue and when you release it you get four options, one of which is to turn on the air view pointer.it is off by default.

My air view hover icons are working but one thing that isn't is a hover icon while in edit mode in S note. Has anyone else noticed that this is missing? I have the circle air view icons in view mode, and the scroll arrows in either mode, but no hover when editing!

[Q] new note owner with a couple questions.

I just got my note 10.1 and upgraded to JB. I'm loving it so far. But I have a couple questions.
1. for my work I really love grabbing a piece of a PDF and driving it over to s note. Is there some way to default to a square crop rather than the lasso? It would look better. Currently I have to save a screenshot and crop that.
2. a lot of the documentation for the note 2 says to hold the back button to pick apps for multi screen. Holding the back button does nothing on the note 10.1. Is that correct?
3. when you use multi screen apps, is there some way to have them automatically go side by side? Mine always appear in a small window and I have to stretch them out to the right size manually. Is that just the only way it works?
I already read the note 2 documentation. Is there some other place I can look for a better explanation of how to use all the features? Thanks for the help.
I don't know about the first two (holding the back button does nothing for me) but if you want them side by side select dual view in the multiwindow app selector and they'll spear like that automatically

Air View works with Google Chrome

Some fantastic news, today, by chance I realised that Air View works with Google Chrome while the air view toggle was off. I tried several times and it works fine but after a while stopped working so I restarted the phone and the hovering feature was still there.
This feature is relay useful specially in those websites with lots of menus where you can open them without touching the screen and redirecting to other pages as if your mouse pointer is hovering on a link or menu in your PC. You may give it a try in websites like tesco with lots of menus and sub menus.
Sounds like Google is working on some new features for its future phones.
Just note that my phone is a stock with the messy MH8 firmware and I turned off airview and air gesture and restarted the device, then it started working.
I wish you can experience this cool thing, if not so. don't blame me, just ask for a clip or something

Using activity launcher go to setting scroll down to air view you find three of them
finger air view and mouse air view open them and enable every thing
The third is pen hovering don't open it ,it will force close the settings
Instead go to pen setting and enable it from there .
Now it worked for me in chrome ,and in the notifications you can hover to see a message like Whatsapp

Air view is working in Chrome for me again I've noticed. It did once before but as soon as I went into the air view settings page it stopped. Also air view is working in the launcher as well? Hovering over a folder expands the icons a bit around the icon similar to when using a mouse and putting the pointer over it.
I used the multimedia dock recently with a USB keyboard and mouse, and I think that's when it started again! So there could also be a link between using a mouse and then air view afterwards!?
Seems to be working in all sorts of apps. WhatsApp, outlook.com. Its like I've got an invisible mouse pointer that's being controlled by air view.
Edit: just tried out Microsofts RD client and I can indeed move the pointer about on the windows desktop just by hovering over the screen. (it's a bit difficult to control though!)
Sent from my GT-I9500
I think maybe what some1 here is experiencing is just a normal touch click, because the screen of S4 is over sensitive, you may click on something even when you aren't touching the screen at all... so you hover over the screen, the screen recognizes a touch but for a very short time so some tabs or lists on websites may open, I can do it with touching too, just touch, and slide away from the list, it opens.
Well I used the dock again and now it's stopped again it's definitely not the over sensitive nature of the screen as you say, in my case.

Multiwindow concept

@XpLoDWilD how's this? Looking forward to your comments
Swipe gesture here is not what action launcher offers. It's different, please check it out.
And enumerate the issues that can still persist in this kind of implementation, i will keep drawing till i get it right and easier for the not so techy people.
The app clicked appears "split in that half of the screen" of which the appdrawer has been swiped out.

Not sure what I'm looking at here, should these menus be always accessible? In which case it's a no-go, considering the number of apps having swipe-from-the-edge gestures.

Ok got your point. Thanks again for pointing out my mistake.
But here i is my take:-
##**Have this swipe gesture only in the 'recent apps screen'. ##**
In recents screen, 2 hotspot on left edge, upper and lower half.
1.Press recents> 2.swipe from edge in the half you want your new app> vertical continual scrollable app drawer appears( like the old launcher pro)> 3.click app. Done
Easy and i hope awesome. Just 3 steps accessible from all screens, all apps, all phones?
See i am trying so hard everyday because the basic problem in omni current implementation is that app should be in recents app. If it's not been open yet, or if it has been swiped off to clear ram, then imagine the number of steps in the currents method to open app in split view.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using Tapatalk
In recent apps screen, just like we have clear all apps button, we can add 2 new buttons ( no swipe gesture)
After that the same steps as above. In whichever half you click app drawer appears and then split app appears there.

I personally like this idea here:
Instead of necessary buttons and shortcuts that are easy to accidentally trigger, just use the multitasking screen itself to long-press an app and then drag it to one side of the screen. Then maybe have two buttons that only appear in multitasking mode, either on the top left and bottom left or on the app preview to remove the app from multitasking. But that's just my idea.

hmm i liked the video as well. but i've always disliked the idea of the app necessarily being already in recents. people always swipe off all recent app to clear RAM.
Just a thought!
Would it be possible to combine halo with multi-window? I know that they don't play well together but I am thinking something along the lines of a mashup. Halo is good at managing notifications in immersive mode but does not give a true multi-tasking environment. Multi-window clearly is the winner when it comes to multitasking but not as good as halo in handling notifications.
Imagine when you receive a notification in immersive mode through halo and when actioned on, it does not open a floating window (which is the case now) but resizes the current window and opens the new one as a split (also making it the active one and pausing the activity in the other one if there is a need to).
Just a thought. I am not a coder and have no idea how much of a pain in the arse this would be but it would be a combination of two of the most innovative features that are currently available on customs ROMs.

Something interesting maybe you can look into to get some ideas
LG launches QSlide SDK to bring floating windows to third-party apps

Why not make it simple?
Why splitting main desktop window?
Every laucher allow many virtual desktop windows, so why not putting on app per window and switching between apps by swypping left-right?
It should be possible as KDE linux do it since many years now.
I am not a dev, but in my mind this should be easyer than floating multiwindows (no needs to resize).
It would be just awesome to have multitasking with full size display. :good:
For Multi window app selection why not just put a small button on the far left edge of the Nav bar? Allow the user to set a few favorites in a drawer with a option of an app drawer to select any app (see the application drawer option in gravity box) While I understand this will only work on devices with on screen nav keys I see it as the most natural option for those devices.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't OmniSwitch the Multi-Window thing for OmniROM?
