Can a tablet replace a laptop?

I spend a considerably amount of time on my laptop - probably more than is even healthy - and I am thinking of getting an upgrade to my Acer Aspire 5552, which is around 2 years old now. At present, here is the specification of said laptop...
AMD Athlon II X2 processor P320 clocked at 2.1Ghz in speed.
15.6" HD LCD display with a resolution of 1366x768.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 with 256MB dedicated video RAM.
4GB DDR3 Memory/RAM.
500GB HDD plus USB ports and SD card slot for extending the storage.
Other than that, it is just a usual laptop with a DVD drive, wireless and a Li-ion battery. It performs fairly well, but I'd like something that offers a new and preferably faster user experience.
On a typical day, I spend a fair amount of time on my laptop - around 5 hours or so - and below I have listed what I usually do below.
Web browsing to visit sites such as the XDA-Developers (here).
Social networking and messaging through the likes of Facebook and Skype.
Listening to music through iTunes.
Watching HD YouTube videos.
Playing some light games (my laptop can't run high-end games, but small ones run fine).
Homework on Microsoft Office.
So, in all honesty, my laptop doesn't get any usage that I personally don't feel able to perform on my current Samsung Galaxy Note. The 5.3 inch device is pretty atypical and, whilst it serves quite well as a portable (7.0 inch) tablet/phone hybrid, I still find myself turning my laptop on a lot because of two things. Firstly, a 15.0 inch display is much more comfortable to look at for longer periods of time - regardless of the amazing resolution of the Samsung Galaxy Note - and, secondly, giving my phone the heavy usage of a tablet leaves me without battery life before I have even left the house (The Note's battery dies after 5 hours of screen time at a maximum).
I initially refused to purchase a tablet, as there are times where I simply need a keyboard for homework and more long-winded typing sessions. As an aspiring author and frequent Blogger also, touch-screen keyboards simply aren't good enough. But, I have recently discovered the Asus Transformer Pad 300. It is available to purchase here on PC World for £400 GBP including VAT, which is just about within my budget. A tablet would serve my usage, I think, rather well and the keyboard dock would allow me to complete some homework and heavy typing sessions. I'd still also have access to a main family PC which runs Windows Vista, so what do you think?
Do you think that, under my circumstances, the Asus Transformer Pad 300 could replace my present laptop and serve my daily usage well?

I actually might think you could be a candidate for a tablet to replace your laptop.... especially with the full keyboard and access to a full desktop.
I couldnt ever do it, but I use my laptop for alot more than you seem to.

Well, I use my laptop a ridiculous amount, but for actual dedicated Windows apps - not so much. With a keyboard dock, I could even manage to do my homework itself on the tablet thanks to Polaris Office. All I would miss from Windows would be Steam, which is a real shame, but I could still use our family PC as much as I'd want to play Steam games or do the few things not capable on an Android tablet. I am reluctant to replace my laptop with a tablet, but the more I think about it the more it seems to make sense from a convenience point of view as a tablet will be much more comfortable than my current process of using a laptop on the sofa. Thanks for your opinion, anyway. Do you think the Asus Transformer Pad 300 is any good, by the way? Has anyone here perhaps owned or tried one?

Well I don't have a TF300 but I do have a TF101 and all-in-all, I am extremely happy with it. In fact I use it more than my laptop. However, I do still use my laptop as a repository or sorts for hosting, downloads and some other Android-type things that a tablet just can't do.
There have been some stability issues with the whole line of Transformers in one form or another. But if you are experienced enough to figure out that it is not a hardware problem, then they all can be fixed one way or another.
I had always thought that tablets were nothing more than just large phones but then I used a friend's Xoom and realized that there was much more to them than that. So, I searched and searched and read and read some more about all types of tablets and what would best suit me. I wanted to know about support (XDA type support), Rooting, development as well as manufacturer support, O/S updates and basic compatability with my daily life.
After all that was done, I decided to purchase the TF101 (in Feb of this year) and have been happy with it. Later, I eventually bought a keyboard dock and between that and my usage patterns, it has beyond outstanding battery life (3-5 days with moderate use). There are several apps that emulate Xcel, Word, microsoft family as well as Polaris. Can watch HD YouTube vids just fine too. i had jury duty a few weeks ago and while I was waiting, I watched Netflix for about 3 hours and didn't put a dent in my battery life and it didn't get hot either.
Storage is unbeatable. Tablet comes with 16/32gb (I have 32gb version), External Micro-SD (up to 32gb) and the dock holds up to 32gb full-sized SD. So if you do the math that is 96gb of storage on a tablet.
I know you are thinking about the TF300 but this is my POV from the TF101. I say pull the trigger on it. You already have the laptop so it isn't like you have to choose between getting one or the other.

Thanks, and I'm going to be getting rid of my laptop should I get one of these. It is either a new 15" laptop or a new 10" tablet. I've never owned a tablet, just an old HTC Desire which had no storage and my first proper Android phone with some decent specifications is a 5.3" Galaxy Note. Do you find 10" enough to run desktop versions of websites comfortably and use it heavily? Will it be enough of a step up you think from my Note? So, it is actually one or the other.

I bought myself a HP TouchPad, now i know its not exactly the best lol, but the way i see it, is that if it requires WIFI for internet access then you may aswell just stick with the laptop.

Yes. I have a Note already which is kind of like a 7 inch tab almost anyway. I would rather save the money abd perhaps buy a new PC next year. Problem solved!

My wife uses a laptop, I used to, but now I use my Acer A200 tablet which I am very happy with. Of course that is when I'm not on my Note which is quite good on its own.

I think it's going to be a while until a tablet can fully replace a laptop.
A tablet with a dock could nearly replace one for me, but not quite yet.

I never thought a tablet could replace a pc but when i got a tablet I virtually do everything i need on it. email, word processing, surf, skype, stream and probably play more games not then before (not any crazy 3d stuff of course). It really depends on the type of user.

I don't think a tablet can replace a laptop..atleast not the ones that are currently out. But i think eventually all Laptops will be tablets..basically the screen just detaches from the keyboard and you can take it to go.

Galaxy note 10.1 or Asus Vivotab Smart

They are different operating systems i know and cant be compared. but I'm hesitant for any of these tablets. I love android and this would be my third tablet (actually only keep one, earlier donated it to my family). But my problem is android tablet-specific applications, many of which are stretched versions of the phone or simply lack of design. Applications for Windows 8 RT are few but all are focused on tablet but there are 50% decent that look great and really tablet friendly. Android for me was the customization and power to get ROMS but lately I see that IOS or Windows already have apps that do the same, maybe not at the same level but they do. And customization is getting really stall because every os is adding stuff that ROMs have. I know that many reviewers wont recommend Windows RT but the vivotab comes with windows 8 +RT and cost the same as the galaxy note 10.1 also it has 5 touch point and the s-pen ( i think every windows tablet comes with the s-pen) . I just want to know if anyone with the note 10.1 like the windows 8 tablet or find it more productive . Im not starting a fight about OS but i want to know how people feel about both tablets for work related aplication.Sorry about my english feel free to correct me. thank you

I start by saying that this is just me and my opinion only obviously. Windows is for "windows people" which is to say they want to turn it on,have it work and fancy it up with the options Windows gives them. It can only be customized so far. Now that's not to say it's less productive by any means. I've checked out their foray into tablets and it only reminds me of everything else they do, which I don't like. I stopped using Windows as a main OS long ago. If I do use it, it's a VB and even that is extremely limited.
As far as a comparison goes, most tablets are useful for your basic needs and even limited professional needs. I just happen to prefer open source stuff.
I hate Samsung phones, hate them. I actually debated for a long time before I bought this tablet because of my "Samsung bias" and almost went with a Windows unit. In the end I felt this tablet suited my needs more and was more "me" if that Mae's any sense.
The best advice I can give is test them both out and then test them again, and then again. I did and I don't regret my purchase for one second. Maybe this helps you,maybe not but either way best of luck with your decision.

I love android tablet too and agree that maybe tablets will not replace a desktop PC for productivity, but i find myself in time to upgrade
i bought the motorola xoom on day one and it was 7 months of hell using honeycomb (im sure windows RT users will know that by now but im more interested in a windows 8 tablet which is the vivotab smart and apps that work for windows 8 will work here.
im not trying in anyway to change peoples mind about galaxy note 10.1 but i would like to hear someone who have touched a windows 8 tab and tell me if its a good buy or will it not replace android any day. I have not seen any windows 8 review that is honest and not try to compare android/IOS/windows

First and foremost, you are right. Windows RT and Android are different.
Also, both form factors are different as well.
I usually recommend the Note 10.1 over its performance and S-Pen, but only for people who would actually use it. If you take lots of notes, or need to make a quick sketch, or if you are a student, even if you work woth a lot of papers and you need an all-in-one productivity tool, note taking board and Internet device, with all the extras that a powerful configuration has to offer, the Note 10.1 is the one to go for.
If what you need is a fast, Internet surfing machine, basic stuff like searching e-mail, social feeds, playing a game or two and use all that in a simple, modern, clean interface, go for the Vivotab. You also get Office suite, which is good for some in some cases.
I have used a Note 10.1 and a Samsung ATIV SmartPC Pro, and I must say, even though both tablets have S-Pen, (and God that Ativ hybrid is gorgeous), I still prefer the Note. It's up to you and your personal choice. I bought the Note anyways because it was that "finally-device" for my first true Android tablet. Even if some reviews were messed up (drunk reviewers? Jokes).
At the end of the day, I always knew I wanted this tablet as soon as it was announced. It's great for me as a student and as a worker as well. It's a great, efficient and powerful companion that never lets me down. But if you prefer keyboard+simple usage+office, go for the vivotab.

I love windows. I'm a windows guy. I can take apart, put together, overclock, underclock, bypass, or anything on earth I want to do with any windows based machine. That said windows RT is not my favorite. Surface with windows pro will be out soon so if your going windows on a tablet id wait for that one. Full pc capabilities. Your not gonna be flash restricted in a year and then there's silverlight as well.
BUT, on a tablet you may also want to consider windows tablets have much less battery life, are ram restrictive, in the growing stage so apps are limited, weigh a lot more, are not as community supported as android, the new one's scheduled for release this year with full windows are running i5 which is awesome but comes at a price. Noise. Lots of noise. Those cpu get hot so must be fan cooled, noise noise noise. Android? Blessed silence. Heat. Anyone whos ever held a laptop knows about the hot spots. If you have a fan there will be a hot spot and the back is likely to get warm as well.
Overall, though im admittedly a windows lover, I choose android on a tablet. And I wont speak about apple as I hate their business model with a purple passion.

Well, i am an Android guy, but thats about phones. On a tablet, I think Asus Vivotab Smart is a good choice. Mine will be shipped tomorrow. It is a Cloverfield tablet, so it runs full blown W8. Apps are no problem here. Battery life is ok due to the low power 2760 cpu, which outperforms tegra 3 and Kraits. And it is affordable. I got mine for less than 500 Euro. So it might worth take a look.

I've had the Asus VivoTab Smart for about a week now, and so far it's been great. I've loaded Office 2010 Pro onto the device and haven't noticed any lag in load times etc. Having a full version of Word, Excel and OneNote are a must for me, and this tablet fits the bill nicely (it's also the cheapest over here in NZ). I did think I'd need Outlook as well, but I'm finding the built in Mail app works fine - it's nice and fast for reading email on the go, displays HTML email fine, and needs nearly all my needs. I do refer to Outlook for some of the heavy lifting (scheduling meetings etc).
I mainly use for work, so haven't used video or music much.
this table doesn't have a stylus (as noted before) - but you can use one of those 'generic' stylus (like the ones for the iPad) which work fine. I personally think Windows tablet developers are missing a trick here, the Windows handwriting recoginition is out of this world - it reads my scrawl better than I do.
Overall, for an easy to use, not much customisation needed, tablet - I'd highly reccomend this one.

I leaned a lot for the Galaxy Note stylus 10.01 but there are not many applications for android that support this pen ... I imagine that in the future things may change but by then it will be time to update my tablet back.
I did some research on the stylus you say and there are very good choices, from typical sausage tip, a fine-point stylus (Adonith jot) to one that emulates an S-PEN, same functions to nullify the palm (jot Touch) and pressure sensitive. The latter is ipad but no doubt that technology pass android or windows 8.
I feel bad for leaving behind android, I actually really like the OS but I feel still very green to the world of tablets and that some apps feel more like they where made for a 7" tablet. Also im kind of scared of this seen how bad apps (Phone/Tablet) look on the nexus 10... i think that proves that having one app fits all is not going to work in near future.
So I think I opt for the smart vivotab think android will live in me .... maybe as BlueStacks or dualboot lol

I really prefer android over apple for both phones and tablets (own apple and android in both). I can't speak intelligently about windows 8. I can say this as a first time android Note 10.1 tablet owner - I bought 2 of these for my 6th & 4th grade kids since they wanted apps (games mostly) and I wanted them to be able to do their homework for school (light use of "word and excel"). Overall the notes are a great single quiver solution and we are all extremely happy with them. But, I have to say if my kids were in High school or college I think the challenges we have in some instances with printing and converting polaris office files to word and excel I would absolutely take a hard look at a Windows pro tablet or even laptop. Maybe it isn't fair since we've only had our Notes for 4 weeks but printing anything not portrait is a chore and coming from a strong Word and Excel background leaves me wishing Polaris Office had a lot more capability.

i'd actually love to get a win 8 tab (not rt). no rooting, no waiting on updates from mfg's and running any windows program. what i do hate is the 16:9 screen ratio. it's just too elongated for me.

I was really keen on getting a Surface, but in the end I decided on the Note. It actually came down to one main point, I can't type on the Surface in portrait mode. I loved the integrated keyboard and cover of the Surface and lamented that something similar wasn't available for the Note. I bought a BT keyboard with a stand so I can have the Note in either landscape or portrait depending on my needs, as soon as I can find one that integrates with the Note as a cover I will buy that.

Just for some clarification, the VivoTab Smart seems to run full Windows 8, not RT (it has an Intel Atom (x86) processor). Won't be nearly as locked down as RT, and might be decent if you rely on some Windows apps.

Don't forget you can run android on x86 machine. You can dual boot android and windows 8 on the asus vivatab smart.
Nothing beat having a standard keyboard on the screen with all the copy/paste ctrl alt characters and shortcut up/down/left/right buttons etc you have on a standard windows. windows 8 has everything you need for a tablet and more more more more. the asus at 499$ worth any peny believe me. maj-left or right to select ... the end of the tablet copy/paste nightmare on phones and tablets.

I'm in the market for a new tablet as well. I have a Motorola Xoom and while it served it's purpose, it didn't quite cut it as a tablet for me. Why? Well first of all, the performance just isn't very good. I've installed several roms on it and it just gets very laggy and unresponsive after a while. The second thing is the weight. I can't comfortably use it as an e-book reader in bed, which is a big want for me.
I went to Best Buy and played around with a few tablets and was really impressed by the Asus Vivo Tab. It was light, very responsive, and after watching a few HD videos on it and playing with it a while, it never got warm. My bit drawbacks for it are first and foremost, it's running Windows 8, which is good and bad. The good is that it'll run native x86 apps, the bad is that it's Windows 8. Will I need to instal Antivirus on it? Can I anticipate BSOD? Not that you can't get lock ups on Android, I've had plenty on my Xoom. Finally, I've read it's useless for all but the most basic gaming (think Angry Birds). I don't game on my tablet at all but my son does.. but then again, he has my old iphone to game on so gaming's not a big deal.
I'm wondering how Bluestacks runs on it though. Anyone tried running Bluestacks on one of these?

Help me decide which tablet
Hi guys
Please help me to decide which tablet to buy. I have been looking at both the Asus VivoTab and the Samsung Galaxy Note. I am not at all tech savvy so must of what you talk about goes right over my head. I want a tablet to take overseas with me. I want to watch movies, surf the net, catch up on my emails, read a book and play the occasional game.
Just give me a really quick idea of which one will suit my needs.

Is that really the only diference? I have been going mad looking at all the specs etc.. Is one easier to use than the other? All help gratefully accepted.

Other differences won't really make a dent in your intended usage. Ease of use will be more important than any technical discrepancies.

Considering a Surface RT

Hi Surface Owners!
I am still debating which tablet to get and have recently included the Surface in the list. Of the current crop of tablets available, it's between the Nexus 10 and Surface RT. I'm not sure what will be announced at MWC, but i'll keep an eye out obviously.
I wanted to get your advice, as most of the people reading will own a surface. How do you find it now a few months on from release?
I will be selling my Macbook, so my new tablet is going to be my go to for the time being. I will be going travelling for several months, so this will be it's main use. I am wanting something that I can connect either my camera or SD card to so I can download photo's on to the device but also from the device to an external HDD. Obviously using it for entertainment will be a big thing, as well as to plan out parts of our journey and using the internet. I wouldn't mind if I could do some very minor photo editing also. Can anyone let me know what the photo app is like on the device, also if there are any decent photo apps on the marketplace.
So the surface looks like a winner in terms of the USB and SD card slots, making it easier to connect whilst travelling. But the Nexus wins on the screen and probably power. I used Android already on my phone so am used to it, but I quite like the interface on Windows 8 as it's something new. Android and IOS get a bit boring after a long time...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If anyone owns both tablets it would be great to hear your thoughts also.

Surface RT is my current ultra-portable computer, and it works well for that so long as it's not all that I have for an extended time. I miss the stylus that my old tablet had (an advantage of the Surface Pro) but do not find that, for example, the kickstand of the RT makes it hard to use on my lap (the way some reviewers have claimed). I have the Touch Cover (and am in fact writing this on it); it works great and you can type quite quickly and with perfect touch-typing muscle memory after a short time of using it.
Prior to the Surface RT, my most portable computer was an old Core 2 Duo ULV (1.2GHz) HP tablet, with a stylus but no touchscreen, 12" screen with 1280x800 resolution, 5 hours battery life (when new), 4GB of RAM (came with 1GB, upgraded immediately), an 80gb 4200RPM 1.8" magnetic hard disk, and 3.5lb weight. I loved it. Still use it, actually; it runs Win8 quite well aside from not being able to use Metro snapping. However, in almost every way possible, the Surface Pro blows it away. For less than the cost of old HP tablet (which was about $1500 new), I can upgrade the C2D to a quad-core chip with over twice the speed per core, I can upgrade the digitizer and add multitouch, I can trade in the 12" screen for one with far higher DPI, I can massively improve the storage by going solid-state instead of rotational (and can get 128GB), and I can keep the 5 hour battery life. The things I would lose are the ability to upgrade the RAM (4GB is a bit low, IMO) and storage (not that I ever did upgrade the old 1.8" drive) and the replaceable battery (I'll live). Oh, and swapping full SD for MicroSD and 2 USB 2.0 ports for a single USB 3.0 port, which means I'll probably want to get a hub. Still, it's tempting, and I may well buy myself one even though right now I don't really need it.

I have a Surface RT and use it as my portable device when I don't want to lug around my ultrabook. For some context, I have an iPad and an ASUS Transformer TF-101 as well. Prior to the Surface RT, I used the Transformer for that. But the lack of things that were important to me made the RT the go-to device when it came out.
For me, things like the USB port, MicroSD card, and Microsoft Office were important. Even more important was the built-in support for Bitlocker, so my MicroSD card can be encrypted at all times and easily read by my other Windows 8 machines. And my other external USB hard drives that are also encrypted can be easily opened by the Surface RT. Native VPN client and RDP helps with work as well (I know there are ways to do this with the other tablets).
I have the apps that I need at this point. I'm not a big social media person, so I can't speak to the apps for those things. But there are enough apps of interest to me that keep me satisfied. Can't speak to the photo apps, however. I don't take photos with it, though I have taken video and those were good.
Overall, I'm very happy with the RT. I got it with the Touch Cover and I can actually type fairly well on it. (I've actually had questions from iPad owners asking about the keyboard, if it was available for their devices.)
I had considered waiting for the Surface Pro, but the extra size and weight, plus the shorter battery life (I get great battery life with the RT, BTW), were concerns for me. I could just as well take my ultrabook (had an Asus Zenbook, now a Sony VAIO T13), which is quite a bit faster than the Surface Pro.

The built in photo app is pretty basic.
I would expect you could get by with the surface rt - get the 64gb one, and get a 64gb card...
I took one on a week cruise (along with a netbook for backup) and was able to use just the surface for the whole trip, including dumping GoPro video and digital camera shots to the surface and then onto an external USB disk.

Just a quick note, I meant gallery app, to look and browse / organise your photos, not the camera app to take photos. I laugh when I see people taking photos with there tablet ha ha. I like the way the ipad shows your photos by map, gallery and a journal function for example.

The Photo album app that comes with the RT is very basic. You may want to check out apps in the store that have more functionality.

What you are saying about getting bored with the other operating systems is exactly why I made Surface my choice. I've been playing with android for the last 7 years. And thanks to all the devs here at xda I was able to make all of my devices do exactly what I wanted.. But it was time for something totally different. I made the right decision. To be honest, at the beginning, learning the new ui was frustrating! :crying: Because I was having trouble finding things and when I did it didn't seem be consistent through the ui.... After about 3 days it all started to come together very well... you'll find that the system is actually set up quite well. I found everything I needed in the store. I'm very pleased with the purchase.

So any 2.5" hard drive will work with the Surface RT? Wow, I'm a bit surprised here. I thought there might not be enough power to power up a hard drive. Is the USB port capable of supporting a USB hub? My plan is to connect at least a 2-port USB hub, and transfer photos from my camera to the portable hard drive. If the Surface RT can do that, then I may not need to consider the Surface Pro even though it have USB 3.0.

I agree with you and that's what I love about the iOS photo app. Does anyone here know of a photo app for Windows RT that can show my photos base on its location data?

No major issues.
For the same price in Canada, the Asus ME400 offers Windows 8 x86 so I went with that due to needing Java/Cisco for remote connectivity to work. I did not regret owning surface. There was nothing majorly wrong with it, I loved the full USB port (which the Asus does not have). Surface RT use s a proprietary charger vs the Asus which uses micro-usb charger. Surface charges faster.
If the app you want is not in the app store, or you need drivers for your devices, that could be a problem. Note that Surface RT does not offer a full size SD card slot, only a micro. You can't put your camera card directly into Surface unless you are using microsd.
Build quality is top notch, the kickstand is great, battery life is very good, and Windows RT is pretty slick.

USB hubs work, but unless you use a powered hub (and power it from the wall or another source), you're still going to be limited by the relatively meager power of the Surface RT's single USB port. It's enough for a 2.5" disk of at least 5400 RPM (haven't tried 7200 RPM yet) but funning (for example) a mouse and a hard drive off of it might be too much.

It's sounding pretty positive so far! I keep reading reviews though and none seem to be great! But I think most of the companies doing the reviews are stuck half way up Apple's ass.
I keeping an eye on a few auctions ending on Ebay tonight, to see if I can pick up a bargain, fingers crossed! If not, I will probably purchase one from John Lewis over the next two weeks.
I've read a few sites that think Microsoft will drop the price on the RT soon, do you think this will happen? All speculation I guess, no one really knows..
The other thing is, they don't seem to hold there value well. Where as the Nexus 10, you could almost make money on if you decided to sell due to it being hard to get.

They expected an iPad with a windows logo. They got a Windows tablet instead. Coupled with the need to dogpile on the new UI, and as you said the large number of Apple Experts With Very Short Memories, and the review effect isn't shocking.

I have a Surface RT and I love it! I use it for nearly everything. I use remote desktop or team viewer for anything that requires x86 apps.
Its brilliant to use around the house! my wife has her Nexus 7 and has to switch between that and her laptop every so often while I just use the Surface.
When my laptop dies which wont be long (though it could be longer as I don't use it now) then I plan on getting a Surface Pro. The build quality of it (Surface RT) is outstanding. I had an issue with the touch cover, contacted Surface support and they were amazing, got a new touch cover no questions asked and in quick time, reported the issue at around 1400 and got the new one at around 1300 the following day! I cant recommend it enough. Everyone I show it is impressed with near enough everything it can do, the only downside is that not all the apps I used to use on Android are available, but Android is coming up to its 5th Birthday in October and that will be 1 year of Win RT.
25'879 are in the Windows Store as of writing and if, this is a big if, Microsoft can some how link the WP store and the WinRT store then it has massive potential.
I only wish that Microsoft really pushed hard on getting these into people hands. In the UK John Lewis is a very repeatable store but that is the only brick and mortar place you can get one. In nearly every store I go these day there is a gadget area selling iPads and Androids, come on Microsoft lets have you back at the top of the tech tree, where you were when you bailed out Apple!

So I've gone ahead an purchased. I managed to get a bargain! £425 for a brand new Surface RT 64GB with black touch cover! Hopefully will arrive tomorrow, fingers crossed. Really want a blue touch cover, so might sell the black and get a blue.
Anything I should know before I first switch on and setup?

After some more usage with the RT, I'm quite liking it. There's definitely lag, especially on games. "Rat On A Snowboard" even lags and there's nothing even going on with that! Something isn't right and a Tegra3 should be able to at least handle ROAS.
Otherwise, "Mobile.HD" works brilliantly so that's a major plus. I've got the UK Netflix showing on my Metro UI, and then I can access the US Netflix using the browser so very pleased with that. "Pow!" seems decent for comics. "Tome" for Goodreads.
But the games really are a letdown. Hardly any decent games and what ones are there run very poorly. I realise it's not an iPad and that'd be more suited for games etc but the Tegra3 works great on the Nexus 7 and it's just not working right in the RT. Whether that's due to the Nexus 7 using all of the Tegra3 cores and the RT not using them all, or whether it's poor coding, or a problem with RT itself, I haven't got a clue. But it's not as fluid as it could/should be.

Surface RT
Again in context I have laptop Dell Duo Flip screen. Nexus 7, Playbook 64gb ( I like gadgets). I was considering a Surface RT or Surface Pro.
But I ended up with a RM Slate 100 (EXOPC) 2gb Memory, 32gb mini pe ssd card (also spare slot for second ssd card or gps unit, 2 usb ports full size, HDMI out, SD Card slot (I added 32gb 45mb sec) 11.6 inch screen I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. in all it cost me £180 pounds.
it was a gamble but the result is a very capable Surface Pro look alike. Any wireless keyboard will work when needed. Linked to my Nexus with a mouse and keyboard simulator it works great through plasma TV via HDMI. Skydrive adds another 48gb storage, dropbox for moving files around.
Added bonus Android for X86 works as well from SD Card .
Boot time 20 sec with Office 2010 loaded. Program start times ready to go Word 3 sec, Excel 1.8 sec, Outlook 4.5 sec, Paintshop Pro X5 31 sec.
Any one else put together a surface pro look alike.
How does a Surface compare.

I have the Asus VIVO Tab RT which uses same OS. I love it as an ultra portable tablet/laptop but one thing I really hate is the browser. I just hate IE10 on Windows 8/Windows RT and wish Chrome or Firefox would release a browser for RT.

I just received my Surface RT 64GB with a black touch cover. First impressions are fantastic! I love the look and feel of the device. Just from setting it up, i'm amazed at just how responsive the touch cover is! I think I'll get used to it very quickly. Doing the updates now so haven't played much, but very happy thus far! Still would like a blue touch cover though!

Best tablet for a laptop replacement?

I am willing to sell my laptop because I am addicted to computer games (dota 2, total war series etc), especially that I'm at university and I need to keep focus on studies.
So I need a tablet for the occasional browsing, office editing/reading and especially for watching movies and TV shows (this is the most important aspect). I will get enough money from my laptop to buy the best thing out there, so budget isn't a problem.
I am an Android user since I used the HTC Desire back in the days, then moved on to nexus S and fell in love with Nexus devices. So the Nexus 10 was my top interest so far, but I heard some of the devices have light bleeding (and I'm very sensible to display quality) and the resolution is actually too big, so the GPU is not powerful enough for it. There are some rumors a new nexus 10 will be unveiled by google with a quad core CPU and a better GPU, but I need a tablet now, not in 4 months or even later, especially that my country doesn't sell nexus devices on google play. Online stores in Romania just got the nexus 10 at the start of this month, so there's no way I'm gonna wait for the new one.
Then I had a look at the iPad 4: I absolutely loved the build quality and how it generally felt, everything was extremely smooth and it looked great, but the 4:3 aspect ratio is a total bummer, considering that I will watch a lot of movies. I tried to find a video to see how movies run on the ipad but had no luck.
Other tablets didn't seem to get me excited too much, was looking at the asus transformer t700 but it has outdated hardware and I heard its slower then the nexus 10.
So the question is, iPad 4 or Nexus 10?
I don't want answers from fan boys, please be realistic.

Also, I don't want to hear anything about converting movies and things like these, I just want to throw the movie on the tablet and see it, be it mkv or avi, blu-ray size etc.

Nexus 10 is way much better and could do all the things you listed above, unless your prefer iOS

I would suggest the Asus Transformer prime with the keyboard dock especially since you're a student and you could use it like you would a laptop in class.

In terms of specs and power, the ipad is pretty great and has the biggest library of apps.
The nexus 10 isn't as absolutely all mighty but it's pretty close, and it's got android, so it'll be much more capable of replacing a laptop computer than the ipad ever will be.
I personally despise Apple, I have had extremely bad experiences with them. I'm currently on an iMac, so it's not a matter of bandwagoning and fanboyism and stuff. I truly believe Android is better and more capable than iOS. The nexus 10 is probably the best android tablet on the market, though the Samsung Galaxy Note could be good for you as you want to use it for productivity and the s-pen is supposed to be amazing. No experience with it though, but I have a nexus10 and I got rid of my laptop afterwards, don't need it anymore.
I use the n10 as a laptop too, I take notes in class and everything, if you add a bluetooth keyboard, you'll get a lot of functionality out of it.

Nexus 10 is beefy specs, very beautiful.
I'm using a nexus 7 right now, with logitech android keyboard and wacom tablet pen.
If you plan on writing notes on tablet instead of paper; I found it difficult in classes where proff writes so fast its hard to keep up.
I'm sure depends on tablet pen you get. But for writing apps for android, there's not too many good ones like there is on apple app store atm.
I tried alot of writing apps; best one that was suited for me was papryus for android. I still couldn't keep up writing notes on it.
Typing notes on it is amazing. Much better then lugging around a laptop.
If you plan on going with writing notes, I suggest something with a digitizer.
If writing notes on tablet isn't an issue your on your mind.
Then i would go with nexus 10 w/ bluetooth keyboard.

Asus Transformer Prime / Infinity: I've played with the Nexus 10 and as far as options go it trumps the Nexus 10. The 10 is a great device, but as far as using USB, adding options, batteries expansion (DOCK), SD, etc the Transformer wins. The outdated hardware/slower than nexus is partly true. The real truth is that the noticeable speed is only on tests. Running apps side by side the speed difference is down to a second or two. The TFT700 is a quad core and the Nexus 10 is a dual core. If you don't put the TFT700 into econo mode then the speed is pretty much even or going to the TFT700 at times.
Now the biggest thing I liked with Nexus over the TFT700 is the micro usb charger and plugin. That and the screen. But outside of that, the TFT700 offers something that no other tablet offers, expansion and expansion. Want another battery? Plug into the dock and you get a keyboard and a battery. Want to add an SD/MicroSD for more space? Just slide the car in. Need to use a USB thumb drive to share something with somebody that has a computer or laptop but don't have a wireless signal? Just put it into the dock. Comparing the batteries in just the devices alone, the 700 to outlast the Nexus 10 in a side by side comparison.
The Nexus does offer the best picture and the newest software updates, but the ASUS team and XDA does a pretty good job of keeping the two running in a neck and neck race.

Transformer series tablets are great. I bought a tf300t after much research and an extremely happy with it. As stated before, the dock ads full functionality for taking notes in class. Supernote came pre-installed on mine which allows you to add drawings to your notes which is essential if you will be taking any chemistry classes.

I will be using the tablet to watch movies and occasionally create some office files on it (though I can still go at the university's library where we have computers for that).
Does anyone have any experience with a jailbroken iPad? How dependent is it to a PC? I heard you need one when you jailbreak it (same goes for rooting on android), but what then? Can I just download cydia apps on it and install without problems?

Well it seems you really want an iPad. I will say this, your notes can be verified on either Nexus ( 7 or 10) and the Transformer. In fact the supernote feature of the Asus is very similar to evernote (although I would still use Evernote or Onenote). You can even use Google to transcribe directly to the supernote feature. If you are looking to take notes in class for Medical, try looking at LiveScribe Skypens.
Ok back to your question, not to bash the iPad, my mother and sister love theirs, but it is too restrictive for my tastes. This includes jailbroken. If you are planning on doing any kind of syncing that does not involve your cloud features you will have to sync via a PC. Apps / updates /purchase can all be done with a wireless feature (although it is much slower). Taking notes you can use Evernote / Onenote, but the handwriting / bluetooth keyboards are not even on the same playing field as the Nexus / ASUS. I can verify that as a CS/Cyber major these notes can be verified and the audio playback / video playback you will have to get permission from your teach if you are allowed to record in class first. Also in terms of watching movies you will be limited to what ever you purchase or convert to the iPad's movie player unless you sync / convert / play with it on your PC first.
PC / Mac Rules for Tablets:
You do need one for an iPad and most Android devices. I say most because there are some devices you can root/break via webpages (Apple has since closed the security hole... so you would need an older OS).
Downloading from Cydia is just like downloading from any market place, with the exception of that you do not know if it has been scanned for malware/virus/permissions. Unlike Google/Amazon you will not be told of the permissions or what exactly it will be using on your system. Also keep in mind that some apps will just not work due to the age of your device / os if you are going from Cydia.

So I will probably buy it and if I don't get the hang of it in 30 days then im gonna return it and go for the nexus, where everything will be so simple for me.

If you want a good laptop replacement tablet: Go buy a PC Tablet (with the rotating displays, keyboard based).
Expensive, but fits the bill. Im pretty sure Hewett Packard (HP) and Dell have some tablets like that. Look up touchsmart on Google.

If you are under the age of 14, or, over the age of 45 than an iPad is a better choice.
If you want flexibility than get an android tablet.
If you want buisness stuff then get a non RT tablet (Windows 7, 8) (RT is no good for business stuff).
I find the tablets with folding displays to have the most bang for their buck. That is just my opinion though.

My mom, my dad, and my step mom all have Android phones or tablets. They are all over 45. My mom is the kind of person who asks me to find where a program saved a file, my dad got his phone after having only had a flop phone. None of them are struggling.
As of ICS simplicity and noob friendliness isn't really an issue.

Hi,
I have an Asus Transformer TF300TG and it is absolutely great. We are using it at home for fast access to internet (emails, cooking receipts, small gaming). It has 3G capability, so you just plug a data sim of your favourite GSM carrier and you are OK to travel and use it on the way.
The battery lasts literally for hours, there is one battery in the tablet part and other in the keyboard part - when tablet is drained and you connect it to the keyboard unit, it recharges from it.
There are a office pack preinstalled (Supernote) and for making notes and easy spreadsheets, it works quite OK.

I'm in the market for a new tablet and I am thinking to buy a Microsoft Surface RT (the 1st gen). My biggest concern regarding this tablet is the problem with the lag that I've heard people complaining about. I've tried to find if this problem has been fixed with the update to Windows RT 8.1, but without much success. Do you guys have any feedback?
My budget is around 300 euros and I've been looking at Surface tablets and the Google Nexus 10, which is currently on discount. I think I would like the Surface more, but the potential issues with the lag have made me reconsider a bit.
What I plan to use the tablet for:
- Web browsing
- Reading
- Movies (is the surface able to handle 1080p? i might connect it to a tv)
- Some light document editing (this is where the Surface would be really handy)
I'm not interested too much in the app ecosystem (Android vs MS Store), so I wouldn't see that as a disadvantage when compared to the Nexus.

Try and save up to buy the Pro 2 Version because you will get let down buy the RT 2, it is sooooo limited
You will fall in love with it but be disappointed, like a beautiful woman who can only cook one sort of food.. Lamb and Smash are a while you will want the full meal..
I love the Surface but hate the way I got robbed by their MS Surface RT 2.
I want more..

The RT will be more than able to handle this work, and then some. IE 10 (or IE 11 with Windows 8.1) are nicely-capable and standards-compliant browsers. The only lag that I ever notice here is when I visit a web site that is thick with awful Flash crap (usually ads). I found that this problem was significantly reduced after I turned on ad blocking as described in the Tricks and Tips thread.
As far as reading goes, there is a Kindle app that works nicely for any Kindle books that you own. The built-in Reader app will give you access to document formats like PDF; although, for my money it is limited. The App Store has some more capable alternatives. I find that I really enjoy using the Surface in Portrait mode for reading, as I can see a lot of text at one time.
Movies-wise, there is an excellent Netflix app and Hulu Plus. If you are wanting to watch DVD rips, you'll find that the built-in video app does have a frustratingly-limited selection of formats that it supports. If this is a major concern for you, take some of the media that you want to play on a microSD card to a store that sells RTs and try them out first.
The Surface comes with Office 2013 Home and Student edition, so that will take care of your Word, Excel, PowerPoint editing needs. There are also several free apps that provide excellent choices for general text-editing.

I have a Surface RT, I also have a Surface Pro, the Surface Pro has replaced my Desktop, but I still use my RT for many things and for your money you cannot go wrong, I have/had a Samsung 10.1 tablet, the wife has it now, I just could not go back to it after I got the RT, go for it, you will not be sorry, lag ?, what lag.

I have a Surface RT 32GB which I bought for £160. This thing has replaced my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 ed. and feels much faster. It feels faster than my old Asus Transformer which used the same chipset. I use this more than my laptop which is I5 with 4GB RAM (HP Envy Spectre). But it won't replace my desktop. So yeah there is no lag. And all the apps you ever need are all on the Windows store like VLC and so on. Definitely a good purchase would recommend. Mine is 32GB (14GB User Available) so would recommend a 64 as I have to use a USB for my movies

Thanks for your replies. If you google surface reviews, in many many of them you see people complaining that the tablet is sluggish. In addition, I've seen videos of 1080p movies having quite a bit of lag, which is why I was concerned.
Would it be better to try and get a Surface 2? From my point of view it doesn't make sense since you get almost the same experience. It's still Windows RT, you just get better performance and a better screen. I'm not sure that's worth an extra 150-200 euros. I'm not really interested in the Surface pro because it's too expensive. The 1st gen might be cheaper, but the battery life is quite bad and I don't want to carry around a charger all the time.
For those of you who upgraded from RT 8 to RT 8.1, was it a noticeable improvement in terms of performance?

The list of improvements with the 8.1 update that I have noticed in my surface rt
1. better performance and frame rate in the modern UI
2. Easier navigation for the modern UI
3. New apps became compatible
4. Office feels more fluid
5. Bugs with WiFi performance has gone
6. Better battery life about 8–9 hrs
7. Faster start up
8. Windows store delay bug vanished .
The only con is that no jail break yet for 8
After i got my surface rt, my laptop is collecting dust , along with my android tablets
I'm a teacher and I use office heavily... this thing is enough' for me , and I have the piece of mind I was missing with conventional windows , regarding malware and such...

Well firstly Surface RT isn't 1080 so that could be the problem. I am watching 720p videos and it plays them perfectly. No stutter at all.
The battery life is amazing on this. I'm an Android fanboy so I'd love to slate Microsoft but the battery life on this is very good, lasts for ages. I charge it once every two days, because after one day usage it still has juice and I'm watching movies, heavy internet browsing and so on

First gen surface rt became stable and good for the money just go for it ...
Who told you that battery life is bad ,, or there is lag ? This is not true man .. just to be on the safe side ,, do a complete reset in the recovery before updating to the new 81 ..and it will take time maybe full day

Don’t worry just go for the tablet, my friend bought it and he told me that it has a
USB ports and also expandable memory and believe me I have never seen him charging it as it has a long battery life. He says that it provides the best of reading and typing experience to its user. It is very light and one the MOST POPULAR iOS and android app in the market. Hope so it helped.

As said the RT is only 720p but it is fine for looking at movies but the Surface 2 has a better screen but just don't believe what people say about the lag on it. You can make it a fantastic piece of kit with just a few adjustments which I found on here and other sites.
The Surface 2 can take advantage of the same adjustments which makes it even faster again.
I had a Nexus 7 (2013) and the RT is faster than that ever was plus I don't have the Google [email protected] and the battery for me lasts between 10 and 13 hours.

Pros:
Metal casing makes it feel premium and durable.
The screen is bright and the colors are vivid even with auto brightness turned on.
Unlike most of the tablets it has a full usb 2.0 port so you don`t need an otg cable.
If you get a (touch) cover you will not need a tablet case.
Kickstand.
Charger does not rely on usb. That means faster charging and longer charger cable.
Cons:
Its heavy because of the metal casing.
The cameras are pure garbage for taking photos. However they are super fine for skype and 720p(and 800p) videos.
The touch cover sometimes misses keystrokes(maybe I need to push it harder?).
The SoC is old (from 2012) so some apps and future updates might not run super smooth.
If you are interested in running anything else other than windows Secure Boot will say nope.
The Surface runs on windows RT which means no desktop applications (not because you are not able to, because microsoft said nope, see windows RT jailbreak) except for ms office, basic windows utilities (minus media player) and IE.However you can get all the apps from the Windows Store (well not all just the arm compatible ones, see VLC). It has reached a hundred thousand apps, some of them are very useful.
Windows RT is certainly closer to a real operating system than iOS or Android. Windows Explorer is an excellent file manager and IE is a desktop browser, so you will always get the full featured website (and not the mobile optimized one).It also has full Flash support out of the box!
Unless you only run ms office and browse the web with your desktop/main computer surface rt will NOT replace your desktop. Even jailbroken will still run very few (though useful) desktop applications.
Windows RT IS Windows but microsoft decided they needed to have absolute control over what is running on it. If they had it open I am sure many applications would have been ported on arm (just as many did on 64bit, its just a matter of compilation). That lockdown is the reason windows on arm never really succeeded(and why the 600 dollar surface came down to 150 with the touch cover...). WinRT(Windows RunTime not the os) is very limited and runs on a sandbox so dont expect any functionality near the one of the classic windows applications (or some android ones) on Windows Store Apps.
Overall I would recommend Asus T100A or some of the Bay Trail tablets that will run everything your laptop or desktop does and have better performance compared to Tegra 3( its equal to Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 800). However you will get worse battery life compared to the arm processors(6-8 hrs atom vs 10-12hrs on arm) and sometimes worse build quality for the same price.
If you are happy with what you can do with ms office and IE on the windows desktop then go for it. Its an excellent tablet with a keyboard on a good price.
If you want to run some of the popular windows tools (Visual Studio, Notepad ++, Sublime Text, 7 Zip, Vlc, Chrome etc...) then you need a bay trail tab.
Personally I thought I could work with Surface RT but after a week of using it on 8.1 I downgraded on RT to get the jailbreak. I use it a lot more than my android tab( nexus 7), but still after a month of usage I feel it is awfully limited.

It seems that you guys have convinced me to go for the surface. There was a good deal this weekend for the Nexus 10, but decided that it's better to get what i like .
Anyway, would it be better to get a new surface rt or a second hand surface 2? I've found a guy who has one for sale with 3 month warranty on it (about 9 months old), but he does not have the receipt. Do you know if you need it in case of any issues?

You can take it to a MS store for service no problem. If you don't have one nearby though... not sure. I *think* they won't care (use the serial number to track it, maybe?) but I can't swear it.
