Hello everyone, iv been a long spectator on XDA for a long time, previously owning many android devices. I think the ONE S is my favourite of all. So i decided to post something to ask you guys. Anyways I own a ONE S from Canada, its the S4 version. I rooted it with this method here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427
Because the phone was carrier locked , i went to unlock it with this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693491 (method2)
Im on stock ICS rom still and everything is going good so far and i recieved notification for JB update. So my question is can i proceed with the OTA update , or do i need to do something first? And will my phone be carrier sim-locked again if i do the update?
Iv heard many stories of bricked phones after OTA update here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065127.. im just scared
Thanks guys.
btw, CID getter is telling me ROGER001, but im using it on WIND network right now)
Heres the link for JB OTA : https://www.dropbox.com/s/ksp5891mq....27.50.08L_release_301897nn5lu23br8cg9q7l.zip

Not 100% sure, but I think most of the stories from bricked phones after update relate to those who had SuperCID their phone, (ie CID w 1111111). Im not sure if it will relock your SIM, but it really shouldnt, since the partition related to the sim unlock shouldnt get flashed.
But its always your own choice whether to update or not. If you want JellyBean stock then update. You may also end up with a newer radio (better reception), newer wifi, etc and other upgrades. Indeed, with a low hboot you can always upgrade those things anyways, so there is more than one way to get what you want. But if it aint broke, nobody is going to tell you to fix it. Your likely fine to update, but theres no guaruntees in life!
You may have to re root your phone afterwards.
Thanks for replying. I wish more people can tell me with more concrete answers. ... I wonder using the root method I mentioned above gives me superCID. Then I would know if I could proceed or not.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
Rooting in and of itself would not give you SuperCID. You would have to specifically hex edit some partitions yourself to change your CID

can you please save the downloaded update zip file from rogers before flashing/updating? and post-it somewhere so other can get it?
will help lot of people
on topic now: because you're rooted and unlocked, it is unlikely the phone will execute the update; however it will download the file, so you will found it on sdcard partition
I promise ill upload it tomorrow, And yes it didnt execute the update...it just went into recovery and gave me an error. Im guessing its because im using a custom recovery. So i guess i have to be on stock rom , stock recovery and unrooted. Trying to look for a guide now

To be able to point you into the specific direction you need to provide some additional information, especially like:
- country
- branding/provider
In general you can find all available stock RUU here:

I would strongly recomment you to read, re-read and search (google or XDA) if you have questions.
Anyway the starting place is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
o S-OFF allows you to install stuff that you need by bypassing phone security.
o Recovery (e.g. ClockworkMod a.k.a CWM) allows you to install ROMs. It also allows you to do a complete (well almost) phone backup and recovery of the phone. So it's easy to get back to a prior version, Nandroid backup/recovery.
o SU gives you admin rights on the phone.
o SuperCID alows you to install any county's /carrier's ROM. e.g. debrand the phone from the shipped ROM.
There are a myriad of ROMs in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1112
Have a look at the number of replies / number of times they've been viewed to get some idea about the popularity.
You'll need to make a couple of decisions:
1: AOSP or Sense based ROMs. The stock one is Sense, pure Google Android is AOSP, they each have a different look and feel.
2: GB (Gingerbread) or ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). ICS is the latest BUT BUT BUT needs additional steps to be performed to update the phone's firmware. I WOULD strongly suggest starting out with a GB ROM first as there is less likely to go wrong.

Surely the post immediately after your OP answered the question, or did it not ?
The other posts, including my earlier one, answered a different question. Hence the comment from another poster, sorry don't have the name, mentioned hijacking threads is not cool.

OK getting the thread back on track.
Did the post after you original one answer the your question.
If not, get the phone S-OFF'd and SuperCID then just install an appropriate RUU, then you'd get the OTA.
EDIT: or just reinstall the RUU for your county/carrier
Most people are going away from shipped ROMs here and trying different ROMs with their good and bad things.
So you mean to say that we can get HTC update with s-off and original ruu only......and u mean no need to do s-on also ????

Look, someone posted a potential solution. Someone else asked a different question (hijacked thread) which was answered.
Please explain the current situation and the attemps you've tried that have failed.
HBOOT, Recovery, Radio, ...... That info is crutial. Also what you are attempting to achieve .
i had s-off and rooted and now i have succesfully s-on and unrooted my device and now i am on official stock ruu...........my question is that can i update my phone via ota updates from htc???
I think OP is trying to ask if flashing an Asian RUU and going to S-ON will turn his T-Mobile Sensation 4G into a proper Asian handset (and therefore get OTA updates that official Asian handsets do).
I'm not sure if it would (maybe there's an IMEI check?), but I would change my CID to be what it should be for that RUU (and not leave it at supercid).
i have supercid my phone and i remain on t-mobile ruu then will i get official update
I'm actually quite curios to know the answer, if I just s-off my phone will I be receiving updates from HTC, I got the T-mobile phone and I live in the middle east, my phone does not read arabic, I'd ultimately like to install a middle east rom , but then will the official updates stop?
I don't think anyone will know until the OTA drops. My hunch is that having the right RUU and CID would mean you get the OTAs. Having supercid will probably not work, since that's essentially what identifies your region.
But putting my XDA hat on, why would you want an OTA anyway when we have legendary chefs here to get you hooked up with good roms?
btw, I tried out one of the InsertCoin ICS roms, and the Facebook app could read Arabic and Urdu properly (right-to-left with joined letters). I didn't check the browser, but it probably would have worked as well. (In GB, you'd have to patch the system libraries to get proper letter joining)
I guess you wouldn't, I just read some people commenting about having some bugs in their custom roms, so I just automatically assumed that the stock roms are at least stable. the other reason is that I'm afraid to break something
I just went through this, I had s-off with super cid and had the stock HTC Europe RUU flashed on my phone.
The phone detected an OTA update was available (an old one that was released after the RUU), but when I tried to download it, it just timed out. I reset my CID to HTC__001 and then it downloaded the update OK.
i bricked my phone while doing s-on
i know its a true brick as nothing is happining not even the charge light
can u tell me that "would this have affected my motherboard or not"????
I'm new to this site, just registered. Sorry i'm a noob!! So I have had the Blue Tmobile One S since august but sold that one to my friend and bought a black one from a guy and said it's from solavei, So I try it and everything seems legit except It's running Android 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0. So I go to menu>Software updates>check now to see if I can get the OTA they had in September but it says I am currently up to date. I checked my sotfware information and it said my software number was 1.84.1135.17 71ORD. I look online to see if I can some how download it and it told me that if I don't have these two other numbers and had something else then the warranty is void and I can't get updates. So My big question is how can I change my software number? Do I have to like root my phone? Then some how unroot it back to a different stock ROM? I'm open to suggestions and I would really like an answer thanks!!

If you're on 1.84 I would not update via OTA. You probably have a 1.06 or .09 hboot, which will be extremely nice for you.
I would suggest unlocking your bootloader via HTC and installing TrickDroid if you want stock. There arr several guides, including a all in one tool to help you with the process.

You can try typing *#*#CHECKIN#*#* into the dialer and then checking for updates.
Or you can find a T-Mobile US 2.35 RUU and running that. However it will be more difficult to flash ROMs once you have upgraded if you want to do that later on.

I tried that and all it did was say in my notifications "checkin succeeded" and nothing else happend.. so idk about that. I'm not really looking to root my phone, all I really want to do is have my phone run on the latest software and get OTA updates if possible. But if I need to root it, I will. And for the second thing, I'd have to root my phone to run the 2.35 right?

After "checkin succeeded" you should then check for updates in Settings, as I mentioned earlier.
You seem to be running an "ORD" build which is basically like a Beta test for the latest software. RD stands for Research & Development. The latest 2.35 RUU should work without rooting.
However that will upgrade your HBOOT and make it more difficult if you decide to root later on.

Using a RUU?
I don't know, I myself haven't done anything. How do I find that out?
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
I meant to say: you could update using a RUU (an update utility that you can download on the pc and flash to the phone via usb). There's somewhere a page that lists all the links to every official RUU, you can google for that.
The Jelly Bean RUU isn't there, yet. But in the meanwhile you could flash to a newer ICS (RUU 2.31, if I'm not mistaken). Who knows, maybe after that you'll be able to detect the OTA.
Used RUU and updated the software version but still doesnt detect JB update.
Shall i just wait and see if it pops up?
What OP?

Usually I don't tend answering ot posts, but this time I want to point out something.
First of all, sorry if I offended you, wasn't my intention, just being straightforward.
Second, I don't think it was necessary to go ot for this.

Well, sorry for the ot, it's just I keep reading posts with people demanding help, rather than asking, then giving attitude when they don't get the answer they were looking for. (Not saying you were demanding.)
Anyways, I'm guessing it's due to the cid change. Very strange and frustrating issue indeed.
Have you tried punching in *#*#checkin#*#* in your dialer before checking for updates?

"Because it is new and is from their Carrier" so people will think they need to flash it
Lol lucky he didn't brick or corrupt hboot . There is a version of that here in android to use instead of ota btw

To the OP:
-When you take an ota, it tries to reboot to recovery. You have a custom recovery installed, but you have to have stock recovery to install an official update.
-You can flash this thing you downloaded, but it has to be renamed update.zip and moved to the root directory. Then you've got to run a ruu to get stock recovery back on.
-If you have s-on and superCID, installing this OTA will brick your phone.
-The 3.18 ota contains some firmware updates and a new hboot that aren't included in JB roms. But if your phone is running fine, you don't need these.
-You're better off just flashing a JB rom until you understand more about how your phone works.
Hi Guys!
Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a bunch of n00bish questions.
I recently acquired an HTC One X on Rogers for dirt cheap (basically $0) and this is my first Android phone having used an iPhone for the past few years. I'm not completely lost around ROMs having cut my teeth on windows mobile phones right here on xda-devs years ago but my iPhone took me away for a number of years.
I've gone through as much of the existing FAQs and help threads as I could but I have a few questions I couldn't find the answers for: Hopefully these are simple enough for the folks here!
1) My HOX out of the box is running FW version 1.73, Android 4.0.3. I see there's some bootloader unlocking issues with AT&T HOX's with FW 1.85 and 2.2 and above. Do these restrictions not apply to the Rogers HOX? Is there a point i should be worried about not having an unlockable bootloader?
2) My ultimate goal is to get a maintainable ROM where I can easily get OS updates without having to manually reload any custom settings or apps. Being an Android n00b, I consistently hear about Cyanogenmod ROMs. Can I jump from my current Stock ROM straight to Cyanogenmod 10.1 JB? or do I have to do something in between?
3) Are there other community ROMs that's better for the HOX than CM? I'm looking for a plain jane out of box experience. I really love how the iPhone works really really great out of the box without any huge amount of setting changes. And that's what I strived for with my old windows mobile device ROMs.
4) Yay or Nay on HTC Sense?
5) Yay or Nay on Staying on the Stock Rogers ROMs (I think the JB update is available now).
6) If I elect to do all the OTA updates, is there something I should avoid like a permanent locked bootloader version or something like that?
7) If I install all the OTA updates and eventually end up on the Rogers JB rom (I assume it's a bunch of incremental updates since auto updates shows I have update 1.93 which isn't the JB rom), can I revert back to the 4.0.3 rom?
I think that's it for now... Sorry for the long list. it definitely grew as I typed it!
Thanks a tonne! I know how great a resource xda-devs was and is. Can't wait to get into all of this again. !
Rogers does not lock down bootloader. You should be fine.
As for sense or aosp it just depends on preference.

apologies for my probing questions as I'm trying to flesh out the dependencies of everything...
Does the rogers HOX need to be s-off'd when flashing custom ROMs.
How do OTA updates work? Do they only apply to a certain kind of stock ROMs? Do custom ROMs have OTA updates?
thanks,
Depending on hboot yes s-off is preferred because it makes flashing easier. You will not have to flash boot image seperately. Some custom roms have ota built in so that you are notified of a new version. Once you start the unlock process it is wise to never take an ota update for stock Rom. Aosp such as Avatar and Sense based Viperxl both can be ota updated. There are more. It will usaully state these capabilities on the page.

When you say I shouldn't take an OTA update after unlocking the bootloader, why is that?
Let's say I unlock the bootloader, but keep the stock rogers ROM and OTA update it. These are just OS updates right? they shouldn't touch the bootloader or do they?
Also, if the Rogers Bootloader is not locked down, then do I even need to unlock it? or do you guys mean it's unlockABLE and still needs to be unlocked?
Does rooting also make a device not OTA'able?
Finally, how are the bootloaders tied to the FW version and to the OS version? Coming from an iPhone, there was the baseband/Radio FW and OS versions, and sometimes a specific hardware version, but that's it. what's the heirarchy for the bootloader and the FW, and the OS?
finally, if there's a good resource that answers a lot of these "android rom 101" questions, please send along a link. I know you guys are busy!
Thanks!

Thanks venomtester, I was just on those pages when I went to check for your reply.. =)
For a general question to the Rogers HOX folks...
just wanted to confirm the following workflow:
1) unlock my rogers HOX with htcdev unlock process
2) get root by running superboot r2
2) run facepalm to s-off my HOX
4) pick a ROM and flash!
That sound about right? I'm not missing anything obvious? I'm not entirely sure if the tools like superboot r2 and facepalm have been superceded by other tools. Especially with all the AT&T specific processes...
This certainly is a few more steps than I'm used to from my Windows Mobile days... =)
Thanks again,

Step 2 should be flash TWRP 2.3.x.x no need for superboot r2?... not sure what that is.
And you'll need to flash a rooted rom before S-OFF or let TWRP root your rom if your hboot is under 2.14
