I've had my Photon Q for 4 days. I unlocked the bootloader, flashed CWM, and rooted using instructions in this forum and everything was working great. I had not flashed any other mods.
I bricked it today by accidentally formatting the internal SD card instead of the external one. It would only reboot into recovery (CWM) and I couldn't mount the internal SDcard from CWM. After reading several threads here I managed to get into Fastboot Mode and flash TWRP, Then, I downloaded the back-up system and boot files posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34555560&postcount=11
and placed them in the TWRP back-up folder on my external SD card as instructed.
When I try to restore from this backup I get an md5 match failure. I also tried moving the backup to the internal SDcard using the file manager in TWRP and got the same result.
Also, TWRP (2.3.3.0) isn't playing nice on my device. All the functions seem to work, but It displays the menus twice in side by side columns, though the touch controls are where they are supposed to be.
Any suggestions?
Don't use the latest TWRP. I need to get with Dees_Troy to sort out what happened with the latest version.
Edit - I think 2.3.1.0 is the latest version that works.
Wow, sounds really familiar. I did the same exact thing. Took me forever to figure out how to fix it. Have you gotten twrp back on?

Went to flash an updated Rom on my ATT One X. Been using CWM recovery.
Reboot into recovery, wipe/factory reset.
Go to find the file, SDCard is almost completely gone/items deleted.
I load up TWRP, mount the SDCard, nothing, all gone. So I just format the SDCard, copy the new Rom over to the SDCard root.
Reboot into recovery. Try to install, when I select it in TWRP, swipe, it sits, then just reboots the app and goes back to the main screen.
At a loss right now, phone apparently soft bricked. Maybe bad Rom zip?
Rooted/Unlocked of course, been working fine the past week. Only had the phone 1 week.
Ideas? Help..haha...
Easy, except you gonna have to reunlock boot loader.you can't boot into fast boot OEM relock bootloader and run ruu. You could also try using fast boot to flash something.

Or it might be a case of twrp going bad. Fast boot flash recovery img and boot back into recovery.

It was clockwork I was using at the time.
Everytime I rebooted into recovery and selected the file to install, more stuff was missing.
I'm wondering if the SDCard got corrupt, recovery went crazy and wiped etc...or bad Rom.
Redownloaded Rom.
Reformatted SDCard for good measure since it was all pretty much gone.
Flashed TWRP back as the recovery.
Installing the Rom now. CleanRom 4.1SE.
But...all my Sh&t is gone off the SDCard. Backups, photos etc...buh-bye forever.
Side note, my camera lens area on the phone has been getting hot. Not sure where the processor is located on this phone, maybe it is just doing that while trying to install Rom and CPU is running a little hot and normal?

Cwm has been known to have instability which is why almost everyone suggests using twrp, which is officially supported.

Ok. I noticed it was nowhere near as complete and slick at say 4EXT recovery on my Inspire and suspected some weirdness was going on.
Back on TWRP now and seems to be installing the new Rom I just downloaded again.
Rebooting now...guess I should start copying my SDCard to my computer
Go to cnet.com and download recuva. Do a deep scam and it will recover most of your stuff.. worked for me.. do it on your computer.

Ok, cool, will give it a look.
The CleanRom thread blew up, apparently me and bunch of others had this happen using CWM and the latest build....
All working again, now if I can recovery some stuff, like the photos I had, that would be nice.
Appreciate the replies and help.
Edit: recuva didn't find anything useful. SDCard was blasted for good somehow.

scrosler warned very clearly (even before the latest 4.1 build) not to use CWM. Why so many people chose to ignore him, I have no idea. For some reason the SD card wipe issue was much worse on CleanROM 4.1 than previous versions (and other ROMs).
Take note that the SD wipe issue has also happened on TWRP. Safest approach is to backup SD data to your desktop computer before flashing anything. In particular, your Titanium folder and anything not easily replaceable (photos, etc.). Its a bit of an annoyance to have to do this whenever you want to flash something. But until the cause of the issue is found and fixed, this is the safest way.
Not sure why everyone is blaming the Recovery's for loosing pictures and stuff from there internal SD card. Same thing happened to me with my HTC Touch Diamond, We all came to the conclusion it was from so much flashing. I have used both recovery's and lost pictures and My Documents. Just my 2cents worth.
Is there a tutorial somewhere showing how to switch from CWM to TWRP?

I wiped the internal and did a factory reset and the phone hangs at the boot startup animation. What do I do to get it to boot up?
running sky ics with twrp. I can get it into twrp no problem but it looks like the backups are gone unless they are on the external sd that i removed which is the only thing I havent looked at yet. I did all this because I sold the phone and needed to wipe everything.
Thanks!
So no help huh?
Update. I put my old sd card in and there are some backups but they are cwm and not twrp. Any way to flash cwm back??
I may just dl sky ics onto my card using my note plug the card back in the skyrocket and install

so here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808433 flash this in TWRP and reboot recovery you will be back on CWM where you will find your backups and you will be able to restore your Rom
You are the man and that will be the first thing I try after I try flashing the ROM back on through recovery. If it doesn't work then I'm definitely gonna use the backup through CWM
Update: I got it all fixed by flashing the ROM again through TWRP! I just had to download it on my way there phone and then put the card into the sky rocket

Hey all,
Recently, I had an issue with the SD card in my skyrocket. Phone will get stuck at custom boot screen for a while. After finally booting, I noticed I had to reinstall some apps...not all.
Anyways,
Right after this happened, I noticed that I could no longer perform a clockwork mod backup as I have done with no issues. It gets stuck randomly during the system files backup state. What can I do to fix this?
I have tried many things, including fix per, flash new cwm version and format new card and copy over all files previously other. Nothing seems to work.
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks

I would flash back to stock reload the whole initial bootloader and stock recovery then go and redo the actual superuser then put on the custom recovery try TWRP or you can try cwm again nothing against skaters CWM twrp is just easier for me
Ahh, was not familiar with twrp and have always used cwm. However, after your reply and downloading and flashing it, I must say I love the GUI and ease of use.
Anyways,
I flashed it and did perform a backup. While I did get two errors, it did actually complete and I believe it did save data to this SD card. Should I worry about the errors though?
What's the difference between this from recovery tool and cwm? Still can't get cwm to backup after that SD card issue.
Thank you much for quick reply

Thanks...
Should I worry about the two errors even if it did complete?
Also, how do you restore?
I tested by booting to twrp and hit the restore button. I browsed to directory on SD card where backup is but not sure what file to chose?
Thanks again...

I don't use twrp but shouldn't the backup be named after the time/date it was created. If that's true then you should know which backup to choose by looking at the time/date.
I'm thinking the folders for the failed backups are also there..
every time I try to create a backup through recovery, its never successful. either it would get stuck at backing up system (or at backing up data) or it would give me an error message asking if I want to report it through ROM manager. I realized that it would get stuck at system (and/or at data) because the partitions weren't mounted. I've tried to remount them through recovery and through various file managing apps, but nothing seemed to work. I've been getting the "failed to mount /system (or /data)” message. what the hell is up with my phone?!
I'm using clockworks 6.0.4.3

rom manager?, are you doing from recovery or rom manager, if doing it from rom manager dont use rom manager for anything related to recovery.
are cards full?
I believe so. I've tried backing up through both recovery and rom manager but nada. the last time I was able to successfully complete a backup was about a month ago when I unsuccessfully flashed slimkat and flashed slimbean right after. but ever since then it hasn't allowed me to. im also wondering why im unable to mount /system and /data partitions. I was thinking I should revert back to stock and start all over again....but would that even fix anything?

There are only 2 recoveries I'm aware of capable of flashing any 4.4 ROM.
As for backup and restore depends on what Roms you're trying to backup.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
so the fact that my phone isn't mounting /system and /data has nothing to do with why I can't create a backup? restoring a backup isn't an issue, being able to make a backup for future restoration is. lol. and i checked my SD cards, they aren't full, so that's not the error I'm receiving. idk. I'm stumped.

I ran the causal root applet on a new SG3 on 4.1.2. Ran root, the unlock script and installed TWRP. Booted into recovery and I got the error for a locked bootloader. I used download mode to get back to the stock rom and then used E-Z unlock to unlock the bootloader. Was able to boot into recovery this time but TWRP read internal and external memory as 0mb, unable to make a backup, and gave a no OS error when went to reboot. I updated TWRP with TWRP manager but the problems are still persistent. Phone boots fine and reboots fine at the moment.
I'm not sure what to do now though. I'm at the point were I don't care if I get stuck with the OTA update but I'm afraid that will brick the phone. I'm not sure what went wrong with TWRP, since this is the second S3 I've rooted.
Any sugestions? I'm afraid to use odin or try anything else since the phone currently works fine. But I'd prefer to not have to sleep in fear it might force the OTA update while I'm asleep and wake up to a bricked phone.
I tried searching, the best I could find is that newer versions of TWRP can't read the memory on a 4.1.2 rom, but the problems were there when I originally started with the recommended version.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Can you install a different custom recovery over one using the causal applet? I was planning on trying to reinstall TWRP but I wasn't sure if I had to do it a certain way like through odin or Using the unified tool kit?

Download latest philz touch recovery d2lte zip, then flash it in recovery, then reboot recovery.
Then check and see if you're getting a similar error message.

I tried CWM and the stock recovery through EZ, both gave the same error as TWRP, unable to mount /
I'm really confused as to whats wrong. At this point I don't care if I get stuck with the OTA 4.3, but I don't want to try to update it with the recovery still not reading either my SD cards.
Any Ideas?
Are you sure of your phone model? I believe it puts it on the screen in download mode and also on a sticker under the battery. I'm mostly curious because you mention that this is a new phone with 4.1.2. Are you trying older versions of cwm as well?

I'm pretty sure, has all the verizon bloat and logos, also I'm pretty sure the causal applet bricks the international ones. I don't remember the version of twrp that the causal script flashed, but I tried that one, the most recent one, and 2.5 i think from EZ recovery. The stock recovery from EZ has the same issue now though which is what really confuses me. at the moment I have root dissabled and the bootloader is locked and its back with the stock recovery, it still says custom when i reboot the phone though.
