[Q] Hotboots after installing too many apps?

Hello, I am hoping y'all can tell me if my phone is just bad hardware, or if this is normal. Since installing the update, I've had to factory reset my phone 4 times so far after something triggers hotboots. Every time I try to ID an app or it is involves the SD card, it turns out to not be related when installing the next time after a reset.
Today I installed all of my paid apps from the Google Market, many of my Amazon apps, and then moved everything to SD card without issue. After downloading so many apps, I'd use App2SD Pro to move them over in batches, and log the apps being moved or installed and if they triggered hotboots.
I then started grabbing the free apps that I could remember using from the Market, reboot, and still fine. When I felt I was nearly done and "safe", I decided to move the last 6 apps that could be moved over to my SD card. Upon rebooting, hotboots began. Uninstalling anything that even looks like it loads into memory automatically, plus those 6 apps, has not helped.
I am wondering if I am tripping some counter when I near/exceed 200 apps and that is triggering hotboots until I factory reset. Currently trying to uninstall more apps between hotboots in the hopes that will help. I am suspecting it is Gingerbread, as I did see this on a leaked build, and not on Froyo.
Those last 6 apps were nothing system related. Just NASA, Inotia 3, Kayak, Medieval Empires, Defender, and Elixir 2. Earlier it tripped after installing Android Assistant and Android System Info. Before that it tripped when I added the Amazon shopping, Student, MP3, and Pricewatch apps.
Why so many apps? Just testing some out to see what I like and don't like.
So, is my phone hosed or salvageable? The hardware has been great so far, just software issues under Froyo and I suspect the same with Gingerbread.
And is anyone else able to repeat this issue on their phone?

Troubleshooting further (by selectively adding the 50 free apps I own from Amazon), the hotboots do indeed seem to be related to having around 200 apps installed.
Could anyone else please test this theory out and confirm/refute them from your experience?

Haha, I can't even think of having that many apps. what's the point of you installing that many? Do you actually use all of them?

Nah, I really don't use most of them. I just want to see what is out there and test stuff out. Since uninstalling quite a few, I've been stable. Shame I have to uninstall anything when I still have plenty of storage and ram.

I'm having similar problems. Have around 200 apps I like. Not everyday, but occassional. In trying to build an EP4D system using stock or Infinity everything goes bad each time I exceed some fairly large number of app installs. The system is then too unstable to fix and I end up rebuilding.....

I have 195 apps on top of stock ep4d deodexed/debloated that I use a fair bit. I have been totally stable. I should admit that I froze a bunch of stock BS though.
Your hardware is probably fine. You could try stability test from the Market to see if you're hardware seems stable. I personally haven't had any problems with app-whoring so far.

It's hard to get a total number of apps, but counting the bloatware and the number of icons under apps gives me a good approximation. I've been trying and testing, and each time the phone is perfectly fine and stable up until around the 200 mark. Odd that I see this under Gingerbread, but never under Froyo. I wonder if Gingerbread has some little known bug that we are hitting when run on our hardware.

I bet you something is borked that that is unrelated to actual number of apps.
What I would do is:
Install Titanium Backup.
Backup the apps you want. Don't backup stuff like that's included in your ROM of choice like Gmail since you can update that via Market. Just backup the stuff you know is not already installed and that you will want.
One thing that auto-updates no matter what I seem to do on stock/deoxed EP4D is Google books.
When you get all your backups then go ahead and nuke your phone. I suggest using CWM 4.0.1.4 to create a backup image in case you need to restore without having to set up your system.
Install whatever ROM/kernel/etc. you want.
Get Root.
Install Titanium Backup.
After everthing is booted, I usually let the Market update and let the couple few apps that the Market wants to update download.
When you are ready, run a Batch operation with Titanium Backup to restore all your apps. Its your choice whether you want to restore data as well.
Generally, I restore app + data because few of my apps have trouble restoring the data.
Run all your apps to make sure they work. Clear data on apps that don't work.
I suggest clearing data on the Market after you get all your apps working.
Freeze the crap that you don't want running.
See what happens.

Earlier today my phone, after 2.5 hours of heavy use, started turning itself off within minutes of being booted. Swapped battery, cleared cache, played with wifi settings and 4g, nothing worked. Reset the phone and all is well. Decided to only load apps I actually use, and will follow the steps in the post above later tonight.

Not sure if it's related to number of apps or size of installed apps, but this is a real thing on EP4D. i'm having it happen on Stock, Debloated and Infinity. It occurs at just over 200 apps. Phone works great until one too many batch restores of 5-6 apps and then it will start hotbooting and become uncontrollable. Only thing to do is reinstall. Done it about 5 times now.
In order to get to 200 or so apps (at least the 200 I want), I always end up having to do some Apps2SD movements for Plants vs. Zombies, etc. I actually think the problem is related to that because I installed around 175, dropped all games (which is all I will move to SD) and then batch restored another couple of dozen and it appeared stable for as long as I left it.
Gonna go back, install debloated from scratch and install only what I gotta have. Just tired of messing with it.

I rooted and restored only the bare minimum of what I use, plus a few games. I just don't want to mess with it anymore. I did use Tom's guide to pull off some bloatware (backed up first) and will just leave the phone alone for now. I lose too many hours tweaking every damn program each time, logging in and tweaking settings lost its fun the 5th time I restored.
Applications now listed exactly 100 apps, and I don't want to fight with it anymore. At least not for now.
Kimmie, who thought I had broke it when I rooted last night and did not have data. Glad to see Verizon had a 12 hour or so outage then, and that my phone is fine.

I'm now at about 198 or 199 apps that I installed on EP4D deodexed/deloated using batch (app+data) on Titanium Backup and it works perfect.
Yikes, I wonder if a few more apps is going to put me over the edge.
In this case, I'm thinking you should get some logcats and see if anyone can give you any hints- unfortunately, I don't have much experience with reading logcats, but its worth a shot.

Again, don't know if it's exact number or some combo with how much has been moved to SD. Here's an AppBrain list of what I currently have working. I didn't look so I hope there's nothing TOO embarrassing in there .
I also own an Asus Transformer and here's the AppBrain list of what is on that machine. Obviously I'm basically just trying to make the two match up so I can do whatever I want regardless of which device I have with me.
Somewhere between the two lists is where I start getting the hot loops right after the machine gets to the desktop on a powerup.

For me it is the total number of apps, and not related to moving to SD. I tested this with smaller file size apps as our internal rom is gimped at barely over 1gb. I have Amazon's free app of the day to thank for a wide selection of apps to test.

Synergy ROM/stock backup question

Im sorry Im posting in here but I do not have enough posts to post in the actually forum category, so hopefully someone can give me some insight. I decided to try the Synergy ROM r66. I liked it. It seemed fast but I installed it because it seemed like my phone was getting very hot on this ROM compared to my original stock. (This is my second Galaxy. My first one would operate normally for a few minutes and then everything would freeze up and a battery pull was the only way to fix it until the next time. But during all this the phone would get extremely hot-so you can see how I would get a little "panicky"). Anyway, I decided to go back to my backup I made, but the backup is not recognized by the Play store when I try to install apps through a web browser. Only the apps that were present on the Synergy ROM show up on "My Android Apps" on the Play Store. Is it because I did a data wipe/factory reset? Would a backup retain this information?

My suggestion...use CleanRom 2.1...I used Synergy and mine got hot with alot of lag going between apps and the homescreen. If you are interested..give it a try...im running it and its a very smooth and stable build.

Synergy comes with custom kernel built-in (Ziggy kernel). Its overclocked to 1.9 GHz as default after flash.
So if you have not changed CPU setting after flash that's probably why phone is hot. Its running at 1.9
Download System Tuner from the market and adjust you CPU frequency. Repost if problem persist.
....rule of thumb: always do a full wipe when changing to a different ROM (ie from cleanrom to synergy or vice versa)

Now I will say this...CleanRom 2.1/CleanKenel 1.1 now comes stock @ 1.99 GHZ using SysemTuner app, that is also a default app with the kernel. You can customize your cpu freq, but if you run it at 1.99 and you put a heavy load on the cpu...it will heat up quickly. The cool thing about the SystemTuner app...it shows your cpu temp in real time.

The responses given in regards to the "hot phone" are great and offer good overclock info that some may not be aware of, but I think the main issue here is about where your apps are. Assuming that you were on stock rooted prior to flashing Synergy, did you do a full wipe prior to creating a nandroid backup or did you wipe first? All of your apps and their market links should be fully intact if you backed up your original rom PRIOR to a full wipe. If not, the direct market link to these apps would technically be lost on the device, and therefore auto install would not work, and the apps would not appear in the my apps (installed) section. Though they will be in the "all" section (swipe left) for you to dig through and manually install. I can't emphasize enough the power of Titanium backup! I suggest to anyone who roots to put this on first and learn how to use it!

[Q] Google now troubles

Good day all.
Last summer I accepted to install Google Now after some suggestion from Google. I quickly realized that this was extremely intrusive and overtook my pad time and again. At the time I blamed that on the fact that my pad was fairly new and was extremely buggy and unstable in every respect.
Now, after many updated and firmware fixes, my Transformer TF700 is much more stable. Lately Google Now has started popping up unasked overtaking the pad. It crashes whatever application I am using and just sits in the lower left corner as if waiting for me to use it. While my pad goes through these episodes, that can last from few minutes up to half an hour, my pad is completely useless.
I have uninstalled everything I can find that resembles Google Now but that does not seem to be enough. I simply can not do anything at all. Anything I try to do the Google Now crashes. I have been able to "force" my way into the app manager (meaning I just make continuous attempts to get into setting/Apps until successful) but there is no Google Now available under running apps.
I have installed all updates and am at version 4.1.1
Any ideas what I can do? This is just too annoying and just last night this behavior prevented me taking meeting minutes in a very important meeting.
Help! Please!

Google now should work fine on your tablet. You definitly have some issue with your OS, I suggest you should download the full firmware from Asus, do a factory reset then reflash the full firmware. This should fixed your Google now and anything else too.

I gather you are on the stock ROM? You cannot actually uninstall any system module on stock; you can only disable them (same result on the exterior, though).
You could give unlocking and installing a custom ROM a thought: they generally either do not include Google Now at all or only at your own discretion (with CROMI, for example, it is an optional install). Are you rooted? If so, you can try installing Titanium Backup and freeze system modules in the app list and hunt it down that way. It seems to be starting up now, missing some component or access. I do not have it installed at all anymore (I found it useless out of the box, and although people recommended it as becoming better with time as it 'learned' what to present me with, I didn't find any improvement on finding the info myself by hand, and it is too US-centered for us Europeans, anyway -- I have no use for yesterday's American Football results.

I suppose I will attempt this and try to choke Google Now after reflashing.
I found the firmware on ASUS web but now I do not know how to proceed. I will look for info about reflashing.
What is mu best option regarding backing the tablet up? I have rather a lot of stuff locally on the tablet that I wish not to loose.

You are correct, I am on the stock ROM and I have not rooted yet. The tablet was so unstable in the first few weeks after I got it so I did not dare void the warranty yet. After it has stabilized I might root it if there is a reason to.
Google Now is WAY to intrusive and, like you said, to US-centric to be of much use to me.
Is there a usable backup solution that does not require me to be rooted?

Download the full firmware from Asus, unzip the file then copy the unzipped file to the root of your micro sdcard, you should see a notification for update, tab on it and let it rip! BTW, without root, not much you can do even try to backup your device.(it's not going to be a complete backup but a half ass one).

Hi. ASUS has an Unlock Device App on its support page. If I get that and, backup, and reflash will I not be back to untooted? If that is so,will I not have trouble restoring my stuff?
As you realize I have not given this much time. I just want to use my devices and not have to be plagued by stuff like this. To me, my phone is a utility first, toy second. I do not have the time to play with it as much as I would like and therefore this kind of operation is all a bit blurry.
I am an IT manager and have been for over 20 years so I am technically aware but have not given my current Android platform enough time yet.

Well, if you want your device to run really well, then you need to unlock your device and flash custom rom/kernel. Many ppl kicked themselves in the bud for not doing this sooner. Sure if you unlocked, warranty is voided, but it well worth the hassle. OK back to your topic, in order to root, without unlocking, you need to downgrade back to ICS version .30, root your device, install OTA root keeper, then do incremental upgrade back to JB. The only advantage with root is so you can install rooted backup app to backup all your apps (system apps, user's apps and all the settings), rooted will not improve your device performance at all, but if you unlocked and flash custom rom, you will see a huge improvement on performance.

Thanks sbdags,was wondering because titanium backup has this listed with a line through it just like it had a google chrome item that prevented me from installing chrome.thought it might be something important.But if it's not in your install then it must be from an app i uninstalled.

I have been searching high and low for an answer for this question myself. I don't think it's something that was installed through tegrazone because i never used tegrazone to install anything. It shows up in the list of titanium backup apps just like an app that has been backed up and uninstalled but clicking it reveals that there is no backup of it and it can't be deleted. Flashing a new rom does not remove it either. I managed to track it down with a root explorer app a couple of roms ago and it was a zero size file that i was unable to delete and i cannot remember where it was located, but now i am running your newest updated stock rom sbdags, and if i remember correctly, the file system has changed, and i am having trouble finding it now. Searching the internet for this only gets you this page and a couple other pages in some sort of asian language that are for an lg phone and have nothing to do with our tablet, nor do they make much sense when translated but i have actually lost hours of sleep over this stupid little file so if anyone can help me figure out what it is, how to either get rid of or restore it, or at least get over it, i would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

A string search across the complete ROM finds the string "/data/data/com.nvidia.cap" in /system/lib/libnvcap.so and libnvcap_video.so. Looks like libraries for audio/video capture. What these libraries store in that file is unknown, probably some configuration settings or debug log output.

So why would it show up in tb and does yours show up as a zero size file too?

Are you completely stock? It could be that GlowBall game that comes pre downloaded on the TF700.

No i have the latest stock rom sbdags put out a couple days ago with max v3 kernel but i did uninstall that glowball thing. Do you still have glowball on yours?
Edit¦ I went and reinstalled glowball and com.nvidia.cap was still there. It's definitely not glowball.

A search on the internet for what a .cap file actually is can be quite confusing lol. You come up with several different answers, but the one that seems to make the most sense in this day and age and this situation is the one about data packet capturing, seeing as how the governments of the world have decided that spying on private citizens is more important than personal freedom and google (android) is one of bilderbergs most proud constructs.

Paranoid? The file is related to the audio/video capturing libraries. The government and corporate spying is done server side.

I have rooted my TF700 for first time last week. Loaded Titanium straight away. Deleted Glowball - com.nvidia.cap showed up with a line through it - frightened the life out of me "What had I done?". The tablet seems rooted and otherwise good. To my limited experience it seems to be part of games Nvidia and not the main Nvidia systems. I have read the posts on this - most is over my head - I will stay with it and hope to learn!

You can remove the file (as far as I can tell) with Titanium's Orphan Remover, but when you reboot, it reappears.
My TF700T is rooted, but I have yet to unlock the boot sector (and won't until the warranty is expired). Tegra is installed, but most of the other "junk" apps have been moved to user memory and many of these have been uninstalled).

[Q] Helium Questions

Hi guys, I've only started using Helium recently, I'd love to backup a few apps regularly, every night but... I've set a schedule with my selected apps. It tells me most mornings that it's done it, but when I check -
a) Nexus 5 (which says last used 8th Nov) it seems to hang retrieving the apps backed up. On the 9th I had to wipe my device. How do I re-register it?
b) When I look at Google Drive (the selected method) it has most apps dated the 10th Nov. Will it check to see if the file is different and only change it if it is? Otherwise I think it's lying to me when it's says it's back them up

Even though i realize this thread is a bit old, i have also recently been started using helium (the premium version because i need scheduled backups).
I also wondered why such an important app and developer didn't set up an official forum for it or, at least, an official thread here on xda. Such a thread would be usefull for support request and other stuff.
By the way ... do you still use Helium? If so ... how does it perform now? Maybe, after 2 years of updates it behaves better?

Can i ask you why?
Did you finally got root and so switched to Titanium Backup?

There are now only 3 or 4 apps I need to transfer data. Each of these have their own backup which I then upload to OneDrive and back down onto the new device.
