Tmobile announced today that they have launched "hd voice" network wide. They said its compatible with the hos, gsg3, and some other phone. Does anyone know if it'll work on aosp? It looks like it's software codec.

I'm on AOSP (JellyBAM), and my wife and uncle are both on AOKP (all three HOS's). I haven't spent more than a couple hours on sense since I got the phones. I just hate the feel of it. The camera on Sense is incredible though.
I haven't noticed call quality changing, but i don't really expect it to be in AOSP immediately. It sounds fully software, so here's to hoping it gets merged into CM and so on, so we can all use it
it shouldn't depend on the software though.

Yeah, the article said the 3 phones, including ours, doesn't need an update. It's already implemented into the HOS. The Towers? are just supporting it now.

I have to ask but why the fcuk buy three HOS phones that run on sense if you don't want or like sense so then end up compromising features such as camera? Just does not make any sense to me why.

a few reasons...
it's the best phone for the price point on Craigslist ($200). I don't think i've ever seen a galaxy nexus on craigslist in my area, or I would have grabbed it.
it's a very fast phone. worlds better then my MT4G (which i also used on aosp).
I'm not compromising the camera, because the camera itself takes awesome pics, i only wish the software features of the sense camera were in aosp. Any alternative phone with aosp would have an equal or lesser camera to the HOS.
I prefer to have one phone model for everyone I support, so i don't have to follow multiple forums; I decided to settle on the HOS. Also, I've always liked the build quality of HTC.

Sure, but it's not just a question of the phone, also the carrier. Other carriers will implement this feature differently, so you only get the benefit if you call another tmo customer who has one of the three supported phones.

honestly i think t-mobile lied. I think its been enabled since the one s came out. at least in some areas. I've noticed since i got this phone that the call quality is higher when i call my gf (she has a one s also). im not flashing sense to test the sound quality between the two however. way to lazy for that.

That's a tough question to ask as everyone's tied to a carrier in the U.S. Someone on Sprint could get almost the same experience with the E3D. The Holiday's coming to AT&T later this year. So being "best" is all relative unless people are willing to switch carriers just to get the Sensation. Maybe a better question would be "is it the best phone on T-Mobile U.S.?" That should get you some spirited debate.

I actually vote for the Evo 3D. It lagged a lot less for me, and the screen looked a LOT nicer. Not to mention the 3D features which honestly, even though I was skeptical, are pretty damn cool.
Alas, I had to drop Sprint just as soon as I tried it, because T-Mobile service is WAY better than Sprint around here. I love the Sensation, but I think I was happier with the Evo.

Well here's the differences between both. I've said it many times, it's up everyone to decide which is more important.
Sensation
1080p video recording
8 MP camera (megapixels don't really matter, but it is a better camera regardless)
Aluminum unibody
Thinner
World phone (small one)
EVO 3D
More RAM
Better FFC (1.3 MP as opposed to VGA on Sensation)
3D (could be a plus for some, minus for others)
To be 100% honest and unbiased The Evo 3D and The Sensation 4G are tied since they are same device Evo 3D has more ram but ****ty cameras The sensation 4G has much better camera 1 8mp versus 2 5mp

People keep using that resolution argument, but it seems that the mytouch 4g slide and sensation get the same scores despite the resolution disparity, so I I'm inclined to believe that res has less to do with the scores than what is believed

Like what? Sensation has a better camera but we got more RAM and the biggest feature to have 3D. And since they are running the exact same ROM the only thing you can do that we can't is wifi calling and I'm sure if I put my mind to it I could get a work around for the other devices. So what other features?

Listed it above. I don't know if 3D is a "big" feature, though. It's more of a gimmick than anything IMO.
Let me clarify something now: I never once said the Sensation was hands down the best phone out right now. I said it was arguably the best and it has some features the EVO 3D doesn't, which is true. But the EVO 3D also has features the Sensation doesn't have. And I'll restate this again: it's up to the buyer to decide which features are more important to them.

As far as the Wifi Calling it would be a challenge but it's possible. 3D is cool but a gimmick. The Evo does have a nice build but the Sensation has it beat. The capacitive buttons on the Evo are so ****ing ugly and the phone just doesn't feel as nice in the hand. Still would prefer the Evo3D to just about any device. You're splitting hairs. HTC just knows how to make a sexy phone.

The OP clearly asked if the Sensation is the best device currently available in the US. And you have clearly attempted to hijack and troll this thread, by waving around your supposed prowess as a "developer." I (and possibly many others) don't give a **** if you can get Wifi calling to work on the Evo 3D, as that does not answer the OP's question.
Now back to the question at hand. In my opinion the Sensation is the best phone available at the moment. However, if I was locked into Sprint I would consider owning the Evo 3D.
ITs not just about the features, it's also the buod quality of the sensation is second to none of any smartphone right now. Also tmobile 4g is pretty good, wifi calling, I heard that sprint 3G suck so bad it's not even funny. Some people may say we can just compare the phones and specs, but a phone as also as good as his network. For example i was thinking of buying an unlocked galaxy s 2 from amazon but what is the point if I only get an edge signal? Na mean?

Hello,
I got the HTC One S the day it came out. It has been 2 months.
I upgraded from a G2... my main reason for upgrading was the front facing camera for video calls.
I don't know if it is HTC, or Skype, but video calling is laggy, choppy, and basically unusable.
My brother has a SGS II, my fiance has an iPad2 and I can't video chat with either of them. It is terrible.
Do you think I'd have any luck exchanging this phone for the new SGS III?
Do you guys have any tips for me when I call T-Mobile?
Being on a custom ROM doesn't help either... in fact the ROMs for this device have screwed up audio, radio issues, and multi-touch issues making games unplayable. None of that will help make my case though so I probably won't mention it. The main point is that video chat doesn't work on a $600 phone with dual cameras.
I haven't really video chat on an Android device since last year so I can't tell you any experience but tmobile might not changed it cause of that, best thing you can do is seek the phone and you put in the rest of the money :/
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
I went from a g2x to the One S only 9 months into contract. The phone you are trying to exchange usually has to have manufacture defects across the board admitted by both tmobile and in this case HTC. Unfortunately the One S does not fall into this category, yet. Another avenue is warranting the phone three times or more, this might prompt customer service to issue a different handset, which you still might not get the s3.
Good luck

Lol the HTC One is not on the lost but Nexus One is. N1 has no FFC.
I thought I would get some feedback from fellow One S users: I just saw how frickin' awesome Jelly Bean is going to be, and have come across an opportunity to trade my One S for a GNex (which has already begun receiving the JB update). Given how long it takes for HTC to roll out ANYTHING, should I make that jump? I know there are a few trade offs, namely an inferior camera on the GNex. I know the One S has better specs, but who knows how long we will be waiting for JB. I guess my main gripe with the One S is how we're stuck with Sense. I tolerate it, but I vastly prefer vanilla Android and AOSP. I know some AOSP builds have made progress but still have problems with no real solutions in sight yet, like camera and connectivity issues.

Things are working to a degree but CM9 is still far from my daily driver standards. I check that thread all the time and keep seeing issues pop up, particularly with picture/video recorder quality, which is a deal breaker for me.
And I would be getting money on top for the GNex, if this guy ever gets back to me. I wouldn't even really need much back to even out what I spent since I talked the T-Mo reps down to $100 for my One S when I got it.

HTC is not TOO bad when it comes to releasing software updates. It certainly is not the worst, *cough* Samsung. Once Google officially releases the source of Jellybean, HTC will begin updating Sense to 4.1. It's safe to say that we would not receive and update until at least 1-2 months after the release; possibly more, depending on HTC's developers. One thing I am skeptical about is waiting to T-Mobile to release their version of HTC Sense with T-Mobile apps and bloatware. If anyone is on stock T-Mobile waiting for an update, this is one thing to consider. I am sure this will not take long as all T-Mobile has to do is add its apps and bloat ****, then release it.
Regarding the difference between the GN and HOS handsets, our device is much better; at least, in my opinion. We have a MUCH better build quality (metal, sleek). We also have better specs, albeit, no sdcard slot. Just because a device gets and update first does not mean it is the best. The GN has it first because it is still the flagship stock Android device as it is a Nexus device. If our HOS was on stock ICS with no Sense, we would get the update at the same time as well, most likely. In sum, we just have to wait a bit longer
EDIT: benchmark scores do not mean ****.

Well not necessarily. Look at the myTouch 4G. That phone got a ton of development, and they're far ahead of others when new OSes come out. They already got a 90% working Jellybean, Sense 4, 4A, fully working ICS, supports Gingerbread and froyo and even a Honeycomb sdk ROM which runs pretty well. They stop at nothing. I bet that phone will be the next HD2.

The problem about the Amaze is not the developers its HTC the build that phone different than others like the wifi drivers that htc dont want to release it to developers
and in that case its hard to make a kernel to work on to make other roms that are not based on stock amaze roms,
to have another version of sense or even have vanilla ics its hard without these drivers. GSM WORKS WITH HACK, NO WIFI, NO DATA, ETC though the roms runs smooth and great. even CM TEAM backed off of it trying to make cm9 and the only problem was that no data, no gsm
do some reading

While that may be true, HTC is likely going to be more willing to release kernel sources for a more commercially available phone than they will for a phone with just one carrier. More available phone > more development > more people *****ing > yada yada.
Even if they did, development would still be small because not as many people can own an Amaze. Again, one carrier in one country. Others wouldn't be willing to deal with an unlocked one on EDGE, just how people are.
Almost got it, love my Sensation!!!! (Until i get sick of it)

That's not point. They're REQUIRED to release the sources as per the open source licensing rules. Sadly, they won't freaking do it. Even HP did it, and HP doesn't sell an official Android tablet.

Hello,
How are you?
I've opened this thread because I am wanting to buy a new phone, but don't know which one to go for.
For some background.
I had an HTC sensation. Kept it stock and liked the phone and sense UI. At the time I also had an HTC flyer.
I wasn't really using the tablet because it wasn't as convenient to take around with me as the phone.
The tablet spent most of the time powered off at home.
So, I decided to sell the flyer and the sensation and bought a galaxy note.
I wanted a device to combine both tablet usability and phone portability.
For a time I really enjoyed the note, but now, the size is getting the better of me.
I would like better usability with one hand and not being afraid to always drop the phone while handling it on the go.
I also got tired of carrying a digital camera with me and find myself taking more pictures with my note, so a camera upgrade in IQ from my note would also be very welcome.
I also use my phone as a music player, so sound quality is also important.
I don't use many apps nor have many apps installed.
I use gmail a lot, browse the web, the occasional Facebook update and tapatalk.
Also Google maps and navigation.
So, with all this in mind, what do you think would be the right device to go for and why?
Hope you can help me out. There are lots and lots of devices out there and I really don't know all of them strenghts and weaknesses.
Thank you.
Cheers

I am surprised that the Galaxy Note's camera disappointed you. If you like Sense, you can consider going in for the HTC One X. It has an 8-MP camera. You can try out the Samsung Galaxy S3 if you liked the TouchWiz interface on your Note. Both these mobiles have large-enough displays to conveniently do your work & play apps. However, they are much portable compared to the Note. The HTC One X has Beats Audio, whcih might meet your music requirements.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
I am not disappointed by the note's camera. I find it very good.
The thing is that I came from DSLRs then because of the bulk and weight went to a micro four thirds setup and am kind of spoiled by the IQ of such systems.
I know that a phone camera is always a compromise, but since going for a new phone, if there is one with a better camera, it would be a plus.
I liked the sense UI. I can say I liked it best than touchwiz. TW is OK, but currently I am running CM on my note and like the vanilla android experience better.
Cheers

First pick the carrier, then pick the phones/tablets you might be interested in. Then check with the "Find your Device" box on the top of the page and look at the forum activity level and make sure there is good dev support.
I have a Sensation which I love, but I have TMobile which I do not love. Fortunately the Sensation has excellent dev support, so 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
I would say the s3 has a nice big hd screen yet will fit in one hand and a pocket very easily.
Also has a very nice camera.

HTC One X+ maybe
I would say go with an S3.
The optics on the camera are great.
The design is 'new'
It has powerful hardware.
It will receive lots of support on xda because many own it.
It will receive many updates to come.

Hello.
Here in Portugal it's different.
We also have carriers, but I prefer to buy my phones unlocked and carrier free. It is not a big price difference and the resale value is higher.
So, I am not limited by carriers.
Cheers

So far the HTC one X and galaxy S3 are the suggestions.
I have a few concerns about both...
Namely, they are not that smaller than the note, at least as far as screen size. Is the overall size that much different to affect overall handling and usability?
Also, from what I read around the web, the One X seems good on paper in regard to camera with it's f2.0 lens and image sense chip, but then the results seems over processed and compressed with not so great IQ.
The S3 camera seems like it is not a big upgrade from the note camera.
In regard to audio, the HTC has Beats. Is it's audio quality ahead of the S3?
The One X and S3 seem lime the two greatest android contenders. Any other suggestions besides those two?
Thank you all for your help.
Cheers

Xperia S has a good camera (one of the best on the market now) and awesome sound quality (even more if you install the mod we have which integrate DBS, SRS, ClearBass and xLoud). The screen is far the best on the market right now (colors aren't too bright and washed), except for the vision angles which aren't so good.

That is definitely a great option, but I also mean it from the perspective of monthly carrier pricing, coverage, customer support, etc... Are all carriers roughly equal, or do some provide better coverage? Do you go on a monthly or prepaid system, or are you in a contract for a longer time?

I thought about the xperia s.
It is far cheaper than the one x or S3. Actually here it is almost half the price of the S3.
I'll think about it. But it seems Sony will launch some new models soon...
Is the camera noticeable better?
Cheers

We have three carriers here. Vodafone is the only international carrier. Than we have TMN and Optimus, two Portuguese carriers.
We also have monthly plans and contracts, but for my usage I have a plan with no contract. I have data and voice and pay less than 10 euros a month.

Noticeable (not so much difference, but better) It is kinda noisy on low light situations, but that may be due the software.
