Hello,
How are you?
I've opened this thread because I am wanting to buy a new phone, but don't know which one to go for.
For some background.
I had an HTC sensation. Kept it stock and liked the phone and sense UI. At the time I also had an HTC flyer.
I wasn't really using the tablet because it wasn't as convenient to take around with me as the phone.
The tablet spent most of the time powered off at home.
So, I decided to sell the flyer and the sensation and bought a galaxy note.
I wanted a device to combine both tablet usability and phone portability.
For a time I really enjoyed the note, but now, the size is getting the better of me.
I would like better usability with one hand and not being afraid to always drop the phone while handling it on the go.
I also got tired of carrying a digital camera with me and find myself taking more pictures with my note, so a camera upgrade in IQ from my note would also be very welcome.
I also use my phone as a music player, so sound quality is also important.
I don't use many apps nor have many apps installed.
I use gmail a lot, browse the web, the occasional Facebook update and tapatalk.
Also Google maps and navigation.
So, with all this in mind, what do you think would be the right device to go for and why?
Hope you can help me out. There are lots and lots of devices out there and I really don't know all of them strenghts and weaknesses.
Thank you.
Cheers

I am surprised that the Galaxy Note's camera disappointed you. If you like Sense, you can consider going in for the HTC One X. It has an 8-MP camera. You can try out the Samsung Galaxy S3 if you liked the TouchWiz interface on your Note. Both these mobiles have large-enough displays to conveniently do your work & play apps. However, they are much portable compared to the Note. The HTC One X has Beats Audio, whcih might meet your music requirements.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply.
I am not disappointed by the note's camera. I find it very good.
The thing is that I came from DSLRs then because of the bulk and weight went to a micro four thirds setup and am kind of spoiled by the IQ of such systems.
I know that a phone camera is always a compromise, but since going for a new phone, if there is one with a better camera, it would be a plus.
I liked the sense UI. I can say I liked it best than touchwiz. TW is OK, but currently I am running CM on my note and like the vanilla android experience better.
Cheers

First pick the carrier, then pick the phones/tablets you might be interested in. Then check with the "Find your Device" box on the top of the page and look at the forum activity level and make sure there is good dev support.
I have a Sensation which I love, but I have TMobile which I do not love. Fortunately the Sensation has excellent dev support, so 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
I would say the s3 has a nice big hd screen yet will fit in one hand and a pocket very easily.
Also has a very nice camera.

HTC One X+ maybe
I would say go with an S3.
The optics on the camera are great.
The design is 'new'
It has powerful hardware.
It will receive lots of support on xda because many own it.
It will receive many updates to come.

Hello.
Here in Portugal it's different.
We also have carriers, but I prefer to buy my phones unlocked and carrier free. It is not a big price difference and the resale value is higher.
So, I am not limited by carriers.

So far the HTC one X and galaxy S3 are the suggestions.
I have a few concerns about both...
Namely, they are not that smaller than the note, at least as far as screen size. Is the overall size that much different to affect overall handling and usability?
Also, from what I read around the web, the One X seems good on paper in regard to camera with it's f2.0 lens and image sense chip, but then the results seems over processed and compressed with not so great IQ.
The S3 camera seems like it is not a big upgrade from the note camera.
In regard to audio, the HTC has Beats. Is it's audio quality ahead of the S3?
The One X and S3 seem lime the two greatest android contenders. Any other suggestions besides those two?
Thank you all for your help.
Cheers

Xperia S has a good camera (one of the best on the market now) and awesome sound quality (even more if you install the mod we have which integrate DBS, SRS, ClearBass and xLoud). The screen is far the best on the market right now (colors aren't too bright and washed), except for the vision angles which aren't so good.

That is definitely a great option, but I also mean it from the perspective of monthly carrier pricing, coverage, customer support, etc... Are all carriers roughly equal, or do some provide better coverage? Do you go on a monthly or prepaid system, or are you in a contract for a longer time?

I thought about the xperia s.
It is far cheaper than the one x or S3. Actually here it is almost half the price of the S3.
I'll think about it. But it seems Sony will launch some new models soon...
Is the camera noticeable better?

We have three carriers here. Vodafone is the only international carrier. Than we have TMN and Optimus, two Portuguese carriers.
We also have monthly plans and contracts, but for my usage I have a plan with no contract. I have data and voice and pay less than 10 euros a month.

In a nutshell. The sgs 3 is the same processor as the one x. Performance will be about the same with multi tasking being better on the sgs 3. You give up an sd card slot and a removable battery in favor of a better screen and more of a solid feel.

I hope you're right man. I think it's the superior phone. If we could only get something like CM9 working completely that would fix the multitasking, then i'd have no complaints.
I had the one x , sold it and bought an s3 (att/rogers dual core version)
Honestly and truly the one x is a better device in some ways. The battery life is much better on the one x due to the lcd screen using less power despite the two having the same processor. The screen is better too, the one x screen is a lot better and clearer even at lower brightness. Not to mention it just overall looks better (brighter and truer whites, colours also actually look natural unlike amoled). And you cant even deny the fact that the one x has a much much better build quality its a better and more solid feeling device.
Though the siii has an edge over the one x in some areas like sense vs touchwiz, i find that touchwiz almost never lags vs the one x still had hiccups in some areas slight homescreen lag etc etc which is almost non existant on the siii. Plus for me the major issue that drove me away from my one x is the multi tasking issue, basically the one x has the most aggressive app switcher that kills an app almost instantly after you exit it, the phone is near useless at multi tasking. iE if i was listening to music and went to change the song while browsing, when i came back to the browser the phone would have to "reload" the app.
With that said, the two phones are practically neck to neck, just depends what you prefer as strongpoints and what you can live with as weak points. I would sell my siii in a heartbeat if the stupid multi tasking issue was fixed on the one x.
just my " two cents."

Hmm i got lucky and got a good price for my one x, bought it for 500, sold it for 480 and bought the galaxy s iii for 500.
I prefer the screen and build quality of the One X but love that Samsung released source code so soon (most likely just to steal sells and pull users like myself)
Everything else has been said. They both have advantages and disadvantages. It's pick your poison.
Me, I chose to go where the source was. No sense waiting 90 to 142 (if there's an update) days and using workarounds to unlock the bootloader if someone else openly offers both.
I know, I'm a broken record since I got this phone. I'll try to post a little less lol. Just frustrated with HTC

The main reason i dont like my GS3 is because the build quality of it feels a bit cheap, like the back battery cover already has a crack in the top right corner. I also get a few kinks like my SD card randomly unmounts, i get lags here and there, a few FC's, and launcher restarts. Other than that the phone is solid...Just a couple things i would expect it to tackle but samsung kinda over looked.
On the other hand ive used HTC devices before and there build quality even back when i was using the G1 was great, they make it feel solid along with adding the perfect amount of weight to the phone. Ive never had a problem with an HTC phone, only with there batterys, thats why i was kinda leery on the One X not having a removable back so if the battery does screw up like it has in my G1, HD2 and MT4G i can just easily put a new one in. But overall i dont mind it having less ram and no SD port because i pay for my dropbox monthly to have extra space.

Its getting redundant with that same reply im getting. Like i stated in the OP "And before some one trys to bash me, i like other peoples review on devices and why than going by some internet post without hands on backing to it." I much rather take to a forum where the main phone is the HOX where people that will actaully reply used the One X and maybe both One X and SGS3 and can give me solid reasoning why. I trust some ones word that has used the device longer then just some one who is just doing a review because they have too...

Thanks for your questions. After all it is the General HTC one X forum!
Rather than waste a post with a school girl reply, I will help answer your question.
I have had both and took back the SGIII. I like the One X better, mainly because the SGIII screen does not work as well outdoors and the whites are more greyish than the One X.
Hope that helps?
What's not "wowing you" about the SGS 3? This info might get you a better answer.
We seem to be losing more and more people everyday to the sgs3. Source better come soon or I think this phone will be doomed development wise.

So with taxes I'm looking to spend about $350 on a phone with no contact. I WAS thinking the nexus 4 but people on craigslist are retarded asking $500+ because people bought out the play store with the intentions of reselling and ripping people off. So other than that I was thinking of getting an s3 or a note 1, possibly a one x.
My questions are, which carrier version, and which one should I get. I want one that I could use on family mobile with better speeds, maybe simple mobile or something. I'm into rooting and roms and overall best specs out there. So which phone should I get in that price range, and which carrier version? Processor and ppi as well as camera is most important to me.

Personally, the Note is a little on the large side for a phone, however, some people like it. Would suggest that you get some extended hands on time with it out before buying. S3 has good feedback except for the build materials (i.e. drop and chip) and is roughly the form factor that I would be comfortable with and there is quite a bit of ROM development for it. A friend uses a Note 1 and swears by it, connects it up as a laptop at home with keyboard, mouse and monitor (his portable office). Haven't had a chance to test out the OneX but what I have read on the forums are that it has good battery life, solid performance and since it is basically stock, updates are quick. Just got WP8 as a xmas gift, from an SGS2. Don't recommend it, until they fix some pretty fundamental missing features but the camera is by far the best I have seen so far.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Samsung phones. Have a GS2 skyrocket and it's an awesome phone. ROM support is strong, and definitely affordable on your budget.
i would buy the htc one x+. i really like the htc os. a few years ago i bought the htc desire hd and i've never regretted it. so why not switching to another phone by htc
HTC One X looks very cute. But I heard about screen problems. I am most interested in Nexus 4, however it's not available in my country, but I would recommend it. I love that Nexus 4 has stock Android.
HTC one xl owner here....absolutely no screen problems. Gorgeous screen, great ROMs with great devs, great camera and battery life and you will find some at a very nice price. Only downside is storage and no external SD slot.
Funny u mention screen problems as I've heard the nexus 4 has some.
This phone is really good, not cheaply build like the s3 and personally I feel its better (hence why I chose it over the s3)
Oh and BTW our phones are pretty much unbrickable, flashing ROMs is a breeze and rooting can be done with a downloadable script. And they do t suffer from gs3 problems which they seem to be having plenty of.

Well, at the time of release, that was the feeling wasn't it . A 18% (I think off hand) increase in screen with a 25% increase in battery. So yea, it is basically an S2. 0.2GHz more and most everything else is the same.
I think you should go with all new Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch HD Super Amoled touchscreen display that supports 1280x720 pixel resolution natively which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

If you had an upgrade what would you choose.........
My choice would be the one. I like the LCD screen found on the DNA. I have alot of faith in the 4 Ultra pixel camera. I want a phone that doesn't feel like a child's toy. The quadrant scores on the One were amazing, although I'm sure the S4 will come close. What would you choose?
FYI: all phones have ultra pixels, however there 1.1. The ones found on the One are 2.0. Just saying

The event for the unpacking of the GS4 was ridiculous! Seriously I watched the hole "show" and I was awaiting for the new killer feature that would erase the concurrents.
First of all, the design. Some of you may say "don't change the lineup of a working team" but personally I'm tired of the same designs with Samsung devices lately. It's the same on the GS3, on the note 2 and now on the GS4 ? Show some innovation Samsung!
I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built.
HTC really got that and the amazing device that is the ONE is the proof.
You can't say "yeah I choose my device because it'll have more updates!". Wrong!
Every high marketed device comes with killer features ! 2gb of RAM? That's normal now. 32 or 64 gb of storage / 5 inch screen? Normal too...
The thing is they all look alike in a hardware point of view, that's why nowadays the design is very important.
A good design means a device built with beautiful and premium materials and that the device's design changes from the device that came out before.
Samsung didn't get that. Although the S series of Samsung is gonna sell at uncomputable numbers every one knows that, I don't think it's a major need to upgrade from the s3 to S4 because I just don't see the point except waisting money.
I think it may attract some of those who will walk in a store and see the device (thanks to the amazing job of marketing that Samsung always does) but for those who were waiting it to be a great and revolutionary device, the disappointment is the real feeling.
HTC ONE is the killer smartphone of 2013's beginning, sorry Samsung you'll do better next time. Or not ^^

Really the iPhone is a better built phone? It's built in the same foreign countries with the same parts except for the processor. IPhones are boring useless pieces of crap

Me getting S4. Although HTC One has better build quality but for everything else, HTC is not the company I would bet on. It will probably never get updates after one or two.
On the other side Samsung is adding more and more features in each update and from last year when I purchased S3, I already got 3-4 updates. Plus they already working on another one with all these latest features.
On hardware side, I think S4 has upper hand on HTC One. Battery is larger, processor is faster, S4 Screen is bigger but phone is little smaller. S4 Screen is better. Not to mention expendable microSD slot and replaceable battery.
So I would not want a phone with better built quality but strong specs and better features.
I think that's the main reason why I switched from iPhone to S3 in the first place. I know a lots of people might hate me for saying this but iPhone has best build quality among all phones out there.
So definitely Galaxy S4.
I said " I love Android, I never had an iPhone and never wanted one, but from the design, iPhone 5 is way better built."
So please understand my sentence as it sound ^^
I'll say again maybe in other words this time, when you grab an iPhone 5 and when you grab a S3, don't tell me that the S3 has a more premium look and feel... And that's not a question of opinion, that's a fact.
I never mentioned the prices of the devices but if you want to, we'll see the price of the S4, when they'll show it at 699$ then you'll tell me the difference with the iPhone. The only device that is worth talking on a price basis is the Nexus 4. The rest of'em are just a scam

what HTC have done with the ONE is ground breaking on both hardware and software,no other company has changed its hardware software so radically from its previous flagship device. With out HTC and the like apple and samsung's upgrades would be even less

iPhones honestly aren't worth the price no matter how discounted they are.
While they may be built better your comparing apples to oranges. No pun intended on the apple thing.
But really I think we can all mostly agree here that android overall is better.

Well it's probably true for new buyers. But for a experienced users, it matters.
When I switched S3 from iPhone, I didn't actually know about all this. I had option to choose S3 or HTC One X and I went with S3 because it's more popular and had better support.
From what I learn in last year, I could never buy HTC or Motorola phones.
These companies never support their devices. They even lock bootloaders so we cannot update our devices ourself or install updated custom roms.
I am also a little disappointed with S4 release but I would pick S4 over HTC one any day.

This was exactly like last year for me.
I wanted a phone with huge storage capacity/microSD capacity and long battery life/removable battery with decent specs. And QWERTY but I have given up on the last thing.
The HTC One X was released and as pretty as the White one was, it definitely was not a purchase I was willing to make and I waited for the Samsung Galaxy S3 announcement. The announcement came and Samsung gave me what I wanted. I bought the S3.
Fast forward this year. HTC One announced. Still no microSD slot but looks like decent battery life. Looks very pretty too (I still think the white One X is the best looking HTC phone though). Not bad this time around HTC but let's wait to hear from Samsung. S4 gets announced and again, they have what I want from last year.
If I was choosing again between HTC or Samsung this year: Samsung Galaxy S4 because it has what I want from last year.
Luckily I want more stuff this year which is why I'm not going to buy a S4. My S3 is lovely and I don't need to buy an S4. However, I now really want a bigger screen. This year, I'll be looking to buy a Note 3 or competitor version as long as it has a huge screen, huge capacity/microSD, huge battery.
Honestly, I don't care what company you are or even what your phone looks like (I bought the S3 for god sakes). Just give me what I want and I'd buy it. I'm also eyeing the Blackberry Q10 simply because of the QWERTY but I think my lust for a bigger screen will win out. Plus the stylus is alright...right?

No, I am not saying, I am upgrading S4 from S3. But I would pick S4 over HTC One.
I will probably get Note 3. I also do not rule out possibility to get S4, if I get some cool discount.
I personally used HTC one and now am using Galaxy s4.The only area where the HTC one excelled is the build quality but to be honest s4 quality is not too bad .it is really solid compared to the Galaxy s3.HTC one is loaded with creepy software where everything is a confusion.not many new options are introduced in the htc one except the boom sound, blink feed .I dont know why the blogs are giving bad reviews to the galaxy s4.it is lot better compared to htc one, xperia z or zl and any other smartphones now even the one of the most useless iphone 5 which is the longest phone according to Apple :cyclops:
so please share your opinions about the s4...

Only American reviews bashed the s4. Also blogs tend to want to start trends so if the big ones start talking about plastic vs aluminum everyone else will. All bad reviews are based on build materials only. Anyway you can't force your choice on others

Don't have the S4 yet but from vids, reviews and users I can say that the S4 has a better build quality then the One. Build quality is no the same as design and choice of material. Many One users complain(Ed) about speakers falling off, gap between the screen and the body of the phone stuff like that. The S4 doesn't have a flaw in its build. Sure its plastic but it is well build. There's no crack any where, no holes or nothing.

I have to say, I just switched from the HTC One to the S4. The One is a quality piece of hardware. The speakers on the front is really nice and it feels really good in the hand. I have 2 primary issues with it. One, Sense has not kept up with the latest good features that have been added to JellyBean. It seems to be a really dated interface. Two, ok, so you don't like the OS provided, unlock the bootloader using the HTC supplied method. OOps, now you have voided your hardware warranty (and they know about it). Big problem when your non-user serviceable battery dies a year into your 2 year contract....
The S4 is not as sexy a hardware platform, but it has better OS, and given enough time, you should be able to root/unlock and install your own OS. Even if it voids your warranty, you can still replace the battery, add micro SD memory and more. Right now I will settle for rooting it and removing bloatware.
I also don't have the Samsung Galaxy S4 yet but I would love to buy as soon as payday comes. I love the features and also I am looking for the quality of camera when buying a phone and it's good. Hoping to have the phone soon.

Hello everyone! I am planning on upgrading my Samsung Epic 4G. I am debating on the following 4 phones:
- Samsung Galaxy S2
-ZTE Warp Sequent
- HTC Evo Design
- HTC One SV
Those four phones are from Boost Mobile, since that is where I have my service from.
I am basically looking for speed and reliability. Love to take photos and videos as well. I use the navigation feature a lot. Things I hate most on a phone are lag, freeze, force closes, random reboots, and lack of internal space.
I will be researching on these phones but I was wondering what are your ideas? I know lots of people here are pros and would love your input.
Thank you all in advance!
EDITED:
I just realized this should have been posted in the "Which Phones To Buy" Thread...... I tried to delete this thread but couldn't figure it out. .I apologize for this inconvenience.
For me between the four phones you're hesitating, I would have chosen the HTC One SV. His performance are pretty good performance and it's not too expensive.
But if you are a flashaholic, the Galaxy S2 is obviously the better choice there are plenty of roms and kernels which make that the phone is still very good despite the fact that it is a bit old.
In term of photos and videos, I think that the HTC One SV is the best one.
Sorry man but I do not know a lot about the two other phones so i can't give you my opinion.
Anyway both phones are very good, the manufacturers and the phones are well known so you shouldn't be deceive by these phones but I will personally have chosen the HTC One SV or the Galaxy S2.

Thanks! Much appreciated! So far, I'm gearing towards the S2, although I kind of wish I can get the S4 but financially I cant.....but will continue to do my homework on the other phones I've listed. Thanks again!
If I helped please hit "thank", that will really help me

I've had the S2 for 2 years, in that price range, you won't find a better phone in it's basic form, never mind the extras through modded Roms

For me, I will choose Samsung Galaxy S2,
Due to I use Sony, Iphone, Moto, I think I should have a try on Samsung.
I advise you to take a S2
I would go for the HTC One SV. I have the HTC One S and I just love the HTC Sense look and feel. Additionally, everything runs smooth, the phone is not too small and not too big and fits perfectly into my pockets.
galaxy s3 is very good choice after all
Thanks everyone! Well, after doing some heavy research, looks like the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the winner! Although I would love to take the S3 but financially, I can only do the S2. There are plenty of Roms, Kernels, and tweaks for the S2. I love the fact that the S2 is fully customizable. The specs for the price is great. For $199, you can't be it. Now, to find the perfect Rom......
