Hi there I'm a sammy geek in relation to my mobile had s2 note s3 and just about to get note 2 on Monday however I am a apple ite concerning my tablet
I have had enough of apple and want to know if the note 10.1 is a worthy replacement ?
I use my ipad for sat nav photo editing facebook games and internet
Most important is adobe photoshop which is built into the note 10.1 plus of course that fantastic pen which the ipad doesn't have
I want to know has anyone took the step I'm losing £300 on trade in if I do as I have the 64gb 4g version so want to be sure
How good is the tablet for speed multi tasking watching film and playing music

Speed of the Note is one of the fastest tablets I have tried, including the iPad3. Once you start using the stylus and other TouchWiz features (ie. floating video, split screen, floating calculator, etc.) you'll be hooked.
Just wondering, is there a return policy if you decide not to keep the Note?

Sat nav - The Note will be better. You'll have more options for s/w and the front-facing speakers are loud and should be easy to hear. It also supports Glonass.
photo editing - Probably a tie. Depending on the detail you're editing to the Note could win based on the added value of the S-Pen.
facebook - The iPad app is proably better aesthetically but it'll work the same on both devices.
games - Depends on the games.
internet - The Note has the best browsing experience of any Andorid tablet. But I'm guessing the iPad's will still be more fluid but no more functional.
speed - It's the fastest Android tablet available. Because iOS is both so stuctured and limited it tends to be more fluid. But in terms of getting stuff done they should perform the same.
multi tasking - A huge benefit. The clipboard is also more of a scrap book. As you collect things from the web or apps and copy them they remain in the clipboard to be used later. Even after a reboot.
watching film - If you're coming from a retina display iPad you may notice some loss in definition. But the Note's display is great with very accurate color rendering. You can also watch a video in split view while you're doing something else or use Pop-up-play to watch a video while using the tablet normally. I watch a lot of video and am pleased with the display.
playing music - The Note has the same Wolfson DAC that's in the SGS3. Audio reproduction is brilliant. It also has BT 4.0 with aptX support which is a lossless playback method if your BT speakers or headphones support it.

I have an iPad 2 [i didn't see much of an upgrade to the iPad3] and the Note 10.1
I love both of them.
I find this tablet a lot more useful than the iPad.
multi-tasking i great. Not perfect.
watching movies is great [with the stereo].
music... well louder than my iPad.
I have the Note 10.1, my wife has the Ipad3. Due to her liking the Note 10.1 a lot better, we're saving to buy another Note 10.1 and we'll give the Ipad to my daughter.
Neither of us sees a noticeable difference in the screen, but some people do. Realistically, you probably won't note the difference with movies or pics. However, you may notice a difference in small fonts. If you read small fonts in normal use, you may notice a large difference. I HIGHLY recommend comparing screens for yourself. That way you'll know for sure what the resolution difference will mean to you.
For watching movies, the Note 10.1 wins hands down. Because of screen aspect ratios you have a 8.9 inch screen on the Ipad and a 10 inch screen with the Note 10.1. (Given a 16:9 movie.) Combined with the speakers--which are FAR superior on the Note--movie watching is a much better experience with the Note. Same with music, the speakers on the Note just blow the Ipad away.
There's no contest when it comes to photo touch up. The s-pen makes a night and day difference. Selecting areas of the photo with the pen is a game changer.
OK, now the downside to the Note 10.1. There was an update--which got pulled--that makes the Note a much better machine. Smoother with less bugs. With the update my Note runs great, without it I got a little annoyed. The update is in the development section here, so you can still update. However some people--a small minority I believe--have had problems with the update. For some, the pen stopped working. That's probably why Sammy pulled the update. The good news is that we can be sure that Samsung is working on the bugs the pre-update Note has, since they addressed them in the update. Jelly Bean should be along soon. So if you get the Note 10.1 and choose not to update you'll have to live with a few annoying bugs until Jelly Bean is released.
I want to get this tablet mainly for movies & youtube. I know the screen is only 800p, but I have a slow Internet connection so I only tend to watch 720p videos anyway.
How good do youtube and movies look on this display with regards to black level and colours.

This review pretty much sums it up...
"The Note 10.1's display was both a disappointment and a surprise. The display carries a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and the Toshiba Excite 10.1. That means no high-pixel density clarity or detail on text or graphics, as you'd find on the Acer Iconia Tab A700, Apple iPad, and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700.
However, Samsung has clearly done something with this tablet to boost its display performance. The sharpness and color of images is dramatically better than the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and my high-resolution images in the Google Gallery had sharpness and detail that came close to what you'd find on the high-pixel density displays. (Another observation: Android tablets typically struggle with skin tones, but the Note 10.1 produced some of the most realistic skin tones I've seen.) Text clarity was better than than on the abysmal Galaxy Tab 2, but it couldn't hold a candle to what you'd get on any of the high-pixel density displays."
I think it's awesome in my opinion. I live the dual speakers having forward. It's now my go to to watch series on in bed.

I thunk this tablet may have the best 1280x800 HD displays out there. REMEMBER. 720P is HD also The display combined with great stereo speakers make this an excellent tablet for media consumption and viewing/listening.
I watch a lot of movies on it. I really don't have an issue with the screen and the sound is impressive.

If you've watched 1080p videos and 720p for example a 15 inch laptop I'd say that you didn't see almost any difference. Of course the screen resolution itself is more important than the videos resolution, but then think about the size, which is minus 5 inches of that laptops screen I find this tablets screen very good. Sometimes I have to zoom webpages but that's only when using splitscreen. So yes it's verygood, but it could be better of course

The screen is accurately calibrated according to "Display Tester" by gombosdev (free in the Play Store). I have no tablet or phone (LCD or AMOLED) that can pass all of the app's gamma tests -- except the 10.1 Note (with latest update).
I was really confused when I wanted to buy a tablet. I was confused between both the New iPad and the Samsung Note 10.1
I was a big Apple fan until I got my hands on this amazing, inspiring, incredible, and lovely Note.
It is seriously one of the best devices I ever had.
Web browsing, youtube videos, movies, gaming, studies, and so much more! "I was actually watching SuperNatural's new episode on my Note10.1 today."

After reading all the reviews on how the a700 is sluggish on ICS, Ive stayed away. However there are some really good deals on it right now, and I saw that it had the JB update. Does that resolve the sluggishness issues? Is it worth buying now? I'd love the extra resolution for PDFs etc, but don't want to deal with something that feels slow all the time.
Actually, the device is not as smooth as a galaxy s2 with jelly bean and aswell it's not as smooth as a galaxy tab 2 10.1, it still lags a bit, but it doesn't really disturb.
Edit: Actually speaking for the last official Acer Jellybean.
However, speaking of the better resolution, the display is not worth the buy, I have seen better displays with 1280x800 pixels, for example the Sony Xperia Tablet S display. The A700 Display is not very bright, also the light sensor is bugged and you basically allways use the lowest brightness settings and the display does not have a good contrast aswell, the resolution is fine, but I enjoy to work with other tablet displays a lot more.
what do you expect? it is a FullHD tablet, so you can expect slowdowns due to the high resolution.
If you don't like it, get a Nexus 10. apparently it is very smooth.
I can say that the A700 runs now more smoothly with custom roms (Coolrom 700 or IconiaN 2.2 with a custom Kernel).
So for the price it IS worth buying.
I bought the Asus Infinity after I got tired of the ICS sluggishness on the a700.
After the JB update came for the a700, I went back and forth between the Acer and the Asus.
This this week, I decided to sell the Infinity and keep the Acer a700..better sound, more responsive (the IO issue on the Infinity was killing me), and I found better battery life.
If I were you, I'd wait for the next batch of tablets powered by Tegra 4. 2560x1600

More resolution more problems to handle good performance i think.
i don´t know what you expect to get for around 370€. Keep in mind the price and what it has on the good side. When you want to have the best, you need to pay for the best. But everything has an other side.
I wanted a tablett,which is fast enough and has the ability for getting a stock 4.2 and a good picture (sound) for watching videos, photos and tv. First i started with a 220€ lcpower sinai-1 tablett. compared to what i got for 150€ more, the acer makes me in every point happy:
- a much better case,
- a lightnings better Panel and Display glass (i mean gorilla) - try to cleaned the other one, it was not possible without cleaner, bad contrast? Not really. My photos looks brilliant, its brighter than all my laptops. together with ips angle stability it´s a great pleasure against photos frames i know.
- long lasting battery life
- everybody is writing on lags. I didn´t reallized them. But i don´t want to play with it. Maybe there are some games which are currently to much for this resolution. Its the same like on laptops, gaming is premium class LOL
- i get covers for it.
I noticed, that eather the alternative tabletts are not on stock, or are much expensiver or are much cheaper. Around 250-350 € are no tabletts. And i wanted to have warrenty, so a china import was not a choice, from the quality not speaking.
And we can root it!
If you don´t want the high resolution, you can choose maybe the a510. It depends on your preferences.
Got an Acer A701 last august, with ICS on, paid the equivalent of 550€ back then. I installed an unofficial JB 4.1.1 ROM back in november, it improved a lot, heating problems have almost totally gone away, system is more responsive, beside the JB improvements and tweaks. In general, tablet's quality is good. I have a protective case but no screen protector, the screen looks like new after six months anyway. I'd love it to be a bit thinner, but nevertheless. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
The stock launcher seems to attribute to the slow response. I have been using Nova Launcher with JB and the response is night and day. It is almost as fast as my Galaxy S3.

I am thinking about selling my iPad and get an Android cheaper alternative. Size 10", with a good resolution (at least HD) and capable of playing full HD and MKV.
Is there something you would suggest? Web browsing is not my priority. Weight, price, screen and battery are
I need at least 5 hours with no wi-fi.

I'll give a shameless plug for the tablet I own and love, the LG G Pad 8.3. Smaller than a 10", but that's the point. Especially compared to an iPad, and even more especially when you consider watching movies. The iPad has a 4:3 ratio, while the LG has a 16:10 ratio (most Android tablets have a 16:9), which is much better for watching movies because there'll be less wasted space on the screen. I'm sure you've noticed how much useless space there is when watching a letterboxed movie on your iPad. The G Pad can be found for extremely reasonable prices these days.
As for full 10" Android tablets, these will cost quite a bit more, but will still seem a good deal compared to iPads. You can get the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 for under $400, and for $450 there's the Tab S 10.5". The latter will probably be a better platform for watching movies (and everything else, really) because of the AMOLED display, which'll have blacker blacks and more contrast.
Regardless of your choice, Androids are great for entertainment, largely due to the widescreen aspect ratio, and also because most have microSD slots to store more stuff, you can load stuff from your computer via simple drag and drop (no iTunes BS), and because even if it doesn't natively support the file type you're trying to play, you can get a player (MX Pro, for example) that'll play practically anything you can throw at it.

Is the GPad 8.3 okay for MKV/1080P files? :silly:
I had both Nexus 7 2012 & 2013 and actually I find the aspect ratio/size really not suitable for me. It was like having a giant phone.
I also have a Note 3 so that's why I am concerned about 7/8 inches tablet. However the GPad looks really promising

It took some searching, but I found a 1080p .mkv video (the nature of which shall remain unspoken), and the stock player plays it fine (as does MX Player).

I like the LG 8.3 because it's about the size/weight as the Nexus 7 tablets, yet with its smaller bezels, packs a significantly larger screen. I really don't like the ~10" tablets because holding them becomes fatiguing after a short time. But the 8.3 is still comfortably holdable with one hand, be it in portrait or landscape mode, and maximizes the screen size within that space. That's just my personal preference. Obviously a 10" screen is better for watching things, but if you have to hold it the whole time, then things can get painful. The size/weight of the 8.3 is manageable and gives you a good compromise between the 7" and 10" devices. The Samsung Tab S 8.4 is undoubtedly the king of these "inbetween" tablets, having a larger screen, yet being smaller, thinner, and lighter than the LG 8.3. But it also costs significantly more (yet less than iPads if you want more than 16gb storage).
And as I said, the aspect ratio is a big consideration you need to make when looking at tablets to watch movies on. The LG 8.3 will give you nearly the same horizontal screen size as your iPad, yet is over an inch and a half narrower, most of which'll be letterboxed black anyway. The iPad's 4:3 ratio is great for playing games and browsing, but wastes a lot of space when watching movies/tv, unless you're watching Magnum PI or other TV shows from the pre-HD days, or movies that were cropped for TV or directed by Kubrick. Anything else, and a 16:9 or 16:10 Android tablet (or Windows, but let's not go there) is better if your main concern is watching movies.

So when i use the Youtube app the screen is about an inch short on both sides of being full screen.
There is an option to expand the screen its called "crop to fit" but it literally crops the video so you cant see descriptions captions or things at the bottom or the top of the video....missing content like this

But if I switch the stock samsung browser to mobile view it gives you 3 options. One of the options lets you go true full screen and doesnt crop as much out. But the thing is you cant select or change the video quality/resolution when its in mobile view. That kind of sucks if you want to watch a 720p or 1080p hd vid
This seems kind of like a big deal. I cant be the only one bothered by this.

There's no good way to scale or crop it. That's what we get because Samsung decided to go with a weird screen aspect ratio instead of making this phone a little wider. I wish it was wide enough to keep the ratio correct.

Wow. If i knew that I would of waited on the Note 8. People always get so hype over these new phones that they dont even question basic stuff anymore.
Dont get me wrong its a great phone but this could be a deal breaker.
But come on you cant watch true full screen HD YouTube vids. WTF.
No point in bragging about the sceen size in all the reviews.
Seems like my old Notes actually had a bigger viewing area if you dont like stuff cropped out. What a bummer.

What are you talking about??? If the youtube video is 16:9 you can still watch it on a 18.5:9 screen. Same idea as watching a 4:3 video on a 16:9 screen. You aren't missing anything just because there are black bars on the side. Do you want your phone to show video in the sides that never even hit the camera sensor that filmed whatever video you are watching? You want something literally impossible.

If the note 8 is a 16:9 screen it wont completely fill up with 4:3 videos. on nooo!!! If you get a 2.4:1 home theater projector screen and try to watch a 16:9 video OMG all that money down the drain!!!! You can't fill your screen!!!
Come on. If you absolutely must watch 16:9 videos on your phone with no black bars then don't buy a phone that is clearly not 16:9.

You might as well stop buying Samsung flagships then, Samsung will keep using the taller screen ratio in the future too. And it's literally impossible to fill the entire 18.5:9 screen with a 16:9 video without either cropping the video or stretching it. Video is information, and new information cannot be generated like you are asking (how are you going to return back in time, to have the camera capture more image from the sides to fill the screen with? The camera did not capture more from the sides, meaning it's not possible to know what was there, the information is missing, thus making it impossible to fill the screen without stretching or cropping)
It's a none issue. The picture quality is so exceptional I don't care enough to worry about black bars
Moreover, if watching a common 2.4:1 movie (i.e. 21.6:9) on the 2.05:1 S8/+ display (i.e. 18.5:9), one can enjoy an almost full screen image using only a small cropping, without the upper and lower black bars...:good:

The cropping is cutting out informative info at the bottom of the vids I like to watch.

it is but it was also great on all my old phones. HD youtube can only look so good on screens this size anyways. It does seem better on the 8+ though. I wanted a larger viewing area. Legit question...If size disnt matter why did you go with the 8+ instead of normal 8?
I wish i could get over the black bars like you.

I dont mind the Stretch. I prefer the stretch. However stretch view is not an option with the Youtube app. Youtube app is the only way to change the resolution to HD in full screen mode. Thats the whole point to screens like this is to watch HD stuff.
Thanks for the technical info but that is a bit over my head. I still dont really understand that. Its not absurd to buy a $900 device and expect it to play youtube vids full screen in HD.
The cropping is an issue because it literally cuts out some of the info listed at the bottom on the screen that is important to the vids I watch.
Also kind of defeats the whole purpose of an edgeless display and how the phone was advertised.

Nope, if they make it wider with the same tiny bezels, it's going to end up looking short and odd. Samsung isn't going back to the 16:9 aspect ratio, it's going to look old-fashioned to people that are used to the taller screen, now that Samsung has branded it as futuristic and great (Infinity display). And it's not an "issue", because it's just a way that screens work, different ratio screens have things cropped out or stretched out if you want to fill the whole screen.

Come on. If you absolutely must watch 16:9 videos on your phone with no black bars then don't buy a phone that is clearly not 16:9.

Dont be a jerk... Calm down. Dont take it personally. Its a legit concern and question I have about enjoying my device. FOR MY NEEDS THAT I PAID MY MONEY FOR.
The bottom and top of the content of the vids I watch daily is cut off in crop to fit mode. Youtube app isnt offering stretch mode for some reason.
There is important info that i need to see for the vids i watch ussualy at the bottom or top of the screen.
It is not ridiculous to expect to watch HD vids full screen and not miss content. Are you kidding me??? You sound like a fan boy. Its a valid point.
I really like the phone other wise. But this very well could be a deal breaker for some. If Its not fof you great. You have no idea what I use my phone for or why I spent money on it.
Again you pay for a big HD screen to be able to use it fully.
If im having these issues swith just using youtube im sure all the other sites and online media are going to suffer from this.
I bought the phone for screen size and hd capabilities. Had no idea I would have to choose between the 2 on one device.

Things come and go every device. I try not to get caught up in the branding or marketing.
Also I would guess the Note needs to be different size than the S8. Otherwise its just going to be a S8 with a pen and moved fingerprint scanner.
Guess we will see.

Note 8 changes will be a 4K screen, fingerprint scanner embedded inside the screen, dual cameras, 6 gigs of RAM and of course an S-Pen. It's a half-year renovation, the general design will barely change, most likely a bit more square than the S8, but generally the same. The screen size will be the same or a tiny bit bigger than the S8+, this time changes are focusing more on specs than the screen size, that is already at the very edges of what is useful in the S8+. The Note 7 screen size increase over the S7 was minimal too. The Note 8 will also get a major software renovation like the Note 7 did, but thanks to XDA we will see that software in our devices most likely even before official release date of the phone, because the processor is the exact same
The annoying thing for me is when the next video plays I have to crop the screen again I don't know if there's a way to keep it full screen until you exit the YouTube app and when you go full screen straight away the ads go full screen but then the video seems to go black bars and you crop it again.
I never understood why people don't like the aspect ratio. The video would be the same size on another phone but there would just be bezels there instead. At least when I'm in other apps I get more real-estate instead of having just big black bars constantly there in the form of bezels

The Note 8 be about the same price as the S8+ right now, just like last year the Note 7 was about the price of the S7 Edge. And as software is a big selling point of the Note line, I don't feel bad at all getting an S-line device, thanks to XDA
To the average customer, a software refresh may be a big reason to buy a new device, but thanks to XDA, we will get complete software ports of the Note 8 over to the S8 quickly. These ports will also have very few bugs, because the specs are so similar, good example is how a bugless Note 7 ported ROM came to the S7 before the Note 7 actually went on sale
And take in mind that the Note 8 release date will most probably be later in the yearly cycle than last year so that the S8 can get a good run, because the S8 this year came later than S-line phones usually do. I don't find it worth waiting +5 months for those upgrades, when the price will be the same

I dont know if thats true. Especially if you're coming from a note. I wish I could get my old phone to power on to test this.
I do find the black bars or the white menu bar to be way more distracting than a bezel.

All I knew was the hype and that blue whale commercial.
Didnt know it was a thing to make sure the phone was manufactured with certain porportions.
Thought being able to use the screen in HD and full screen would be a given.
I have no problem with stretching the screen from the aspect ratio. However that doesnt seem to be an option on most HD content.

Not trying to be a **** but dude they advertised the hell out of the new aspect ratio to the point it got annoying.i dont know how you wouldn't have known lol
Sounds like in the future you may want to research your purchases a little more carefully.
I do agree Id much rather have the traditional 16:9 ratio in a 6.2" size...would be much better for sure
