Tethering with custom rom with t-mobile unlimited - General Questions and Answers

Before you start. I did search "tethering t-mobile unlimited" before posting this but everything pre-dated back to september. I'm sure there's been some development since then.
Let me start of by saying I'm a script kiddie, I can hack things, never developed, going to school for it. I know jack about phones but I think I understand a small amount. I own this crappy little phone with straight talk. Lame. T-mobile came out with unlimited and I want to set it up into a hotspot so I can power my devices on the go and MAYBE cancel charter internet and use my phone to power all my interwebz instead.
How safe is it? VERY worried about a banhammer? Am I overthinking this? My friend has a custom rom installed and he says it's "native tethering". Does native imply it's pure? Undetectable? How detectable is this? What are the best tools as practices to avoid termination.

I'm just gonna say that I saw this when you first posted it, but I didn't say anything because I looked down the page and saw a recently updated thread on the topic and assumed you'd find it. So... I'm guessing that's why no one is really responding here.

Anyone able to flash a working US/ATT 3G rom

Has anyone been succesfuly at flashing a working US/ATT 3G rom on these released Euro HTC Touch Pro's coming out this week? or do we know if that is not possible because of the hardware? Thanks for helping out a newbie that's anxious to lose a Moto Q9h and pickup an ATT 3G compatible Touch Pro (not willing to buy the crippled ATT Fuze).

Please stop yelling at everyone for not searching. It is far more useful to simply point out that the question has been asked and answered elsewhere, and remind the users of forum policies. I only caution you because if you don't settle down you're gonna end up earning yourself a trip to bannville (note, just word of caution not an official warning as i am nobody of significance here), and you don't want to cut off your best source of information for your device

First of all, that's not even English you just spoke. Second, it's not my arrogance but my pure frustration, I can promise you I never double posted like that when I first came here (not too long ago). Having 10 threads like that floating around is going to be the end of us, as it will someday be impossible to find any useful information in the plethora of repetitiveness. I surely couldn't be a mod, deleting 10 posts just like that every day... Why do we have this google search function and stickies in every forum saying to use it, when nobody does? What a waste.

Please read the post directly above you. Two wrongs don't make a right. You can't be offensive just because you were offended by someone else. Black, Everyone is VERY excited about this device and the posibility of it being flashed with the at&t rom so the US gents can get the 3g also. We all want touch pro's with 3g in the states like you so we can all live in harmony!
Hey, did yours come with a case? Wondering what the US version will come with. I bet it will be like the at&t version of the tilt and NOT include a case. Has anyone seen the case the HTC provides? I looks like garbage! I can't even beleive that HTC would release such a great device with such a poor case.

SIM Cardless Optimization

I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

When we flashed an old ROM on my buddy's G1 and rooted it, we didn't update the phone... he downloaded an OTA update and it flashed the new version to his phone successfully and removed root access. Had to do it all over again
I'm guessing the Captivate will be much the same, however if you are concerned you can always unroot the phone when AT&T/Samsung/Your favorite tech blog let you know OTA updates are being pushed to the Captivate.

I was actually wondering if he was serious. Been so many topics with this discussed in them. Didn't know if he was serious or playing around.
To the OP, I don't know jack bout android, contrary to what you think, but I do read, read and read some more. I had my first fuze for about three months before I got another to start playing with. Before I even got the phone I was reading up on it and learning. So I read and learned winmo for about 6 months before I got on to flashing.
I've been reading about android for the past couple months, been reading bout the captivate for the past week. I must say, about 25% of the topics I read talked about froyo, and at least 4 outa 5 times, someone asked this question. Not to mention all the threads that started with this same question.
So maybe I wrote too fast with my response, but really in my head I was curious if he was serious. Ok really an OTA update for a phone should be no different from a Bios Flash on a PC, as the BIOs flash rewrites primary data to default settings so should the OTA update flash. So when 2.2 froyo flashes the OTA update it should in fact rewrite the phone rom to a default state and return the phone to all stock unrooted settings and return all bloat ware.

Good story....so how much space did you just waste? I'm sure everyone is thankful for your input, I read the forums everyday and have yet to see a definitive answer on weather or not we'll get OTA updates after we fiddle with our phones. Guys, FROYO (2.2) hasn't been released officially for our Captivates! But no, if you're talking about OTA updates then no, they will not work on our rooted Captivates well. Sometimes you may be able to register an update but it will fail if you are rooted but for MOST captivates it won't even get that far.
Personally, OTA updates are really unreliable so I'd either wait for someone on the dev section to grab it and make it usable for Odin, since that's easier for me and I can reinstall the software if something bad happens.
And no, a new firmware/ROM for our phones isn't like a BIOS update. I'm not sure how the process goes in depth but I'm pretty sure it just installs over the existing software and (if required) changes some settings deep in the phone's bootloader if necessary. Obviously a 2.2 or any other OS upgrade would mean the phone wipes the device first, which is one reason why OTA would not work.
Hope I answered everything?

[Q] Gingergread and Wifi Tether?

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried Wifi Tether or similar apps with the new gingerbread stock Rom.
I didn't have much luck with Wifi Tether on froyo (had some issues), so I haven't used anything other than PdaNet, but I don't really like PdaNet because it's a little too much (like having to install application on a computer, etc).
If you know anything good, please let me know.
Thank you,
GT
Root your phone and install a custom gingerbread rom. You won't have to worry about wifi tether not working.
Off topic: this is like the third thread I've seen been created asking the same question. Is there something in the water?

FYI, I did perform search, which did not bring up anything specific to gingerbread and wifi tether.
Also, your suggestion is only "one of many" options that my thread is designed to ask. If you are going to be obnoxious, please don't bother replying in the first place.

No. That's a guy saying his default wifi tethering option is not working for his stock ROM. It is not the same thing.
My thread, if you read carefully, is meant to be where people can share different apps and experiences on gingerbread regarding various tethering options.
I am not a moron. I can read. I will not double-post or do noob stuff like that. I can imagine how many people here are annoyed by that occurrence, but let's not be so quick to jump to that conclusion?

Right, because just one person's word is absolute and everything, right? And, only market apps are our options, right? Not to mention, that comment posted by that person still doesn't change what that thread is about. In most forums, posting a different topic under a specific topic is considered hijacking. Furthermore, when you do a search, you can't possibly be expecting people to read every single post under every thread that shows up in search. Maybe that's how you do your search, which is both unrealistically impressive and unusual, but most of us do search in a normal way. We read the search results, which are often just the thread titles and a few posts.
If you are in this forum, you should know better than that. Before you make a post like this, you might wanna think a bit harder.

Ok guys wuusssaaa. Being rude will get you nowhere.
Now as for tethering there may be away around it but it going to be short lived as ATT finds more ways to tell if you are tethering and blocks it. I am one that if you want to tether then grab the plan to do it. We have already seen what happens when data is abused. We get teired and next we will be throttled.
So let's all just get along and chill.
It helps to not confuse wanting to use the hotspot feature and wanting to tether with a USB cable. The hot spot feature requires using a custom apn if you are not going to pay for it. Then AT&T can see all that data passing thru "wap.cingular", instead of "phone" like it should. When tethering using a USB cable, you can use the stock "phone" apn, so data useage properly shows on the account. In the past, with Froyo, I did test out PDA Net, and it worked great with the stock apn. Since I have no need to tether, I haven't used it since and I haven't tested it with Gingerbread.

I will if you quit. I am not the one with attitude. People usually do not appreciate unhelpful responses to a thread they made, especially if they are based on presumptions against the poster's ability to use the forum. I asked nicely for you guys to be more careful before making the kind of posts you made. You did not listen and instead kept pushing. Not my fault.

I've read threads about those, but it seems that it only applies to people who "abuse" it as you stated. So, this isn't really a reason for all users to give up on other tethering options.
For example, in the past 2 years, I've only used tethering twice, both on occasions when I traveled to a place without wifi. It is not reasonable to pay that over-priced tethering plan for rare use of this feature.
I also doubt that AT&T will be able to catch all tethering use on all of their customers. Obvious cases with excess abuse make sense, but not rare and low use, like mine. I read somewhere that Verizon began policing tethering use on their customers on gingerbread, but even then some users reported they were able to get around it.

Thank you, fernandezhjr. That's an excellent point and helpful.
If that's what makes the difference, I wonder if it is possible to write an app that can create a wifi spot using the stock apn. It doesn't sound too difficult to do, but maybe I'm wrong.
I also wonder if tethering via bluetooth makes any difference too?

[Q] What's the best way to remove crap on ATT?

So, can someone link me to a simple, current guide to rooting and removing crapware? Bonus points if I can revert all changes so they can't screw me on my warranty.
I have an AT&T One X, purchased in the last week. I can post version info if necessary.
I want to ditch the yellowpages garbage and all the att garbage (wifi, navigator, cityid, etc) and probably twitter and facebook, though I don't really care if they're there. I'd also like to enable tethering if I can.
I had a ROM on my last phone (samsung infuse) which did all this, but I don't think I want to put a ROM on this one just yet. So, I'm not new to rooting, but I'm new to HTC, and new to removing/freezing bloat. I'm running linux.
Oh, and I saw the one-click root thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
But I read that it makes your phone show *TAMPERED* and lock you out? That makes me terrified of running it.
Edit: Oh, and I have software number 1.85.502.3 710RD... I don't think it would work anyway.
Here are the two best places to start for this stuff:
Number 1
Number 2
Good luck!
You can disable them without voiding warranty. The only thing i couldn't disable was AT&T ready to go.

Because I obviously haven't been trying to use those. Seriously, these forums contain some of the most unapproachable instructions that exist, instructions that have the potential to brick your device, and if you ask for some advice on not getting your $600 device completely ****ed by them, you get linked to google. I help users of various open source projects all the goddamn time, and I never go HERP DERP LMGTFY.
So give real advice or just don't reply. It's not helpful or constructive, it doesn't make you cool, it doesn't even clean up the forums. If you know nothing and are posting to be a jerk, then you're just bumping my post for me. If you're deliberately withholding information and posting to be a jerk, then you're actively increasing forum clutter by keeping me around longer. Either way, the outcome is that the "signal to noise" ratio of the forum goes to **** because half the posts are "OMG GOOGLE," because this attitude is actively encouraged for some reason, when in reality it shouldn't even be tolerated.
Holy crap dude, chill the eff out. My post was completely lighthearted and I was fully prepared to help you and give you whatever help you needed. Hence the that I ended it with. Not anymore!
And you know what's not tolerated around here? Farking n00bs who CLAIM they exhausted searching when it is more than evident they didn't. Answers to ALL your questions can be found in guides ON EVERY DAMN ANDROID FORUM ON THE INTERNET, including here on xda where you decided to post the same exact thread that has already been posted thrice today by other noobs asking for help without wanting to do any legwork of their own.
And if you can't understand the simple "herp derp click here and watch your phone get rooted automagically for you" instructions then maybe you shouldn't be rooting. Smart phones are for smart people.
GOOD DAY.

You can disable apps, or uninstall them by going to settings>apps, or by going to the menu on your app drawer and selecting manage apps. once there, you can tap on apps that you don't want then tapping on them individually and selecting the option that you want.
Titanium backup. The end.

I've dedicated the last hour or more to searching for this ****. Once you've been into modding your phone for a while, you don't understand how difficult it is to get started.
I'm trying to go about this with caution, so I don't get screwed. I cannot afford to replace the phone if I screw up and HTC and ATT decide to throw me under the bus. Maybe the people around here who seem to own 3-5 phones at a time can.
The various roots that I found appeared to have users replying that they didn't work with the latest revisions to 1.85. So I'm still not even sure I can do that. Maybe those users were full of crap, maybe not. How am I supposed to know?
Back to the subject of the phone, it looks like CleanROM is probably my best option, but it will require unlocking the bootloader. So far I've seen instructions for rooting 1.85, but I'm unsure about unlocking.

Lets start over, ok?
To root your phone, there is a one click thread that is stickied in development that works great. I have used it 6 times now and have had no issues. It doesn't always work the first time but usually does the second. it will give you a "tampered" banner on your bootloader but that goes away if you RUU back to stock. It absolutely does work on the latest software (1.85).
Here's the thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
For removal of bloatware, use Titanium Backup. Been using it for 3 years, and I swear by it. When you select an item for deletion, back it up first just in case.

Use these two things, I promise you won't get screwed. I'm sorry for yelling.

a little pointed, but true.. i remember my first post here on xda and I was labelled as a noob for asking a question. some people are just too sensitive for these type of forums. To op, if you cannot handle the "heat" I would tell you what I was told back then: "xda is for people who want to tinker with their phone, or for those interested in learning how to do so and contribute to the community. If that's not you, go to a much more general forum like android central." Now, you can bash me like you did to that guy who was just joking, or you can take what I said for what it means and run with it. Read up, that will do wonders for you.

Hmm, thank you for the help. I still haven't been able to get that root to work. adb wait-for-device finishes, but then the adb push just sits there forever.
Do you have HTC sync running? Is USB debugging enabled?

No and yes. I have sync installed but not running. USB debugging enabled on the phone, phone in charge-only mode.

I got it to work by switching to a different USB host.
Edit: but it said no update found, so I'm restarting and setting the clock forward.

Would have been next. Always use a port on the back of the computer for anything related to root, unlock, or flash.

Well, it's my laptop, and I have to use virtualbox to get winderz. So, it was probably something related to that.
Anyway, I swapped it from a usb2 port to a usb3 port.
Yeah on a desktop it can matter. I have yet to see an explanation of the difference between ports on the front and back, and why adb will refuse to work with some/most front ports. Just seems to be that way.

So I'm on my fourth or fifth try, still "no update available."
Edit: Ok, tried it 7+ times, how can I eliminate winderz? Is this exploit using a patched adb?
