[Q] Gingergread and Wifi Tether? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried Wifi Tether or similar apps with the new gingerbread stock Rom.
I didn't have much luck with Wifi Tether on froyo (had some issues), so I haven't used anything other than PdaNet, but I don't really like PdaNet because it's a little too much (like having to install application on a computer, etc).
If you know anything good, please let me know.
Thank you,
GT

Root your phone and install a custom gingerbread rom. You won't have to worry about wifi tether not working.
Off topic: this is like the third thread I've seen been created asking the same question. Is there something in the water?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

FYI, I did perform search, which did not bring up anything specific to gingerbread and wifi tether.
Also, your suggestion is only "one of many" options that my thread is designed to ask. If you are going to be obnoxious, please don't bother replying in the first place.
Thanks,

Theres one.
but back on topic let me look for an app for you

No. That's a guy saying his default wifi tethering option is not working for his stock ROM. It is not the same thing.
My thread, if you read carefully, is meant to be where people can share different apps and experiences on gingerbread regarding various tethering options.
I am not a moron. I can read. I will not double-post or do noob stuff like that. I can imagine how many people here are annoyed by that occurrence, but let's not be so quick to jump to that conclusion?

Right, because just one person's word is absolute and everything, right? And, only market apps are our options, right? Not to mention, that comment posted by that person still doesn't change what that thread is about. In most forums, posting a different topic under a specific topic is considered hijacking. Furthermore, when you do a search, you can't possibly be expecting people to read every single post under every thread that shows up in search. Maybe that's how you do your search, which is both unrealistically impressive and unusual, but most of us do search in a normal way. We read the search results, which are often just the thread titles and a few posts.
If you are in this forum, you should know better than that. Before you make a post like this, you might wanna think a bit harder.

first quit it with the attitude. Nobody giving you attitude so drop it and you can google it but nobody found one yet maybe att made sure we can't with the ROM

Ok guys wuusssaaa. Being rude will get you nowhere.
Now as for tethering there may be away around it but it going to be short lived as ATT finds more ways to tell if you are tethering and blocks it. I am one that if you want to tether then grab the plan to do it. We have already seen what happens when data is abused. We get teired and next we will be throttled.
So let's all just get along and chill.

It helps to not confuse wanting to use the hotspot feature and wanting to tether with a USB cable. The hot spot feature requires using a custom apn if you are not going to pay for it. Then AT&T can see all that data passing thru "wap.cingular", instead of "phone" like it should. When tethering using a USB cable, you can use the stock "phone" apn, so data useage properly shows on the account. In the past, with Froyo, I did test out PDA Net, and it worked great with the stock apn. Since I have no need to tether, I haven't used it since and I haven't tested it with Gingerbread.

I will if you quit. I am not the one with attitude. People usually do not appreciate unhelpful responses to a thread they made, especially if they are based on presumptions against the poster's ability to use the forum. I asked nicely for you guys to be more careful before making the kind of posts you made. You did not listen and instead kept pushing. Not my fault.

I've read threads about those, but it seems that it only applies to people who "abuse" it as you stated. So, this isn't really a reason for all users to give up on other tethering options.
For example, in the past 2 years, I've only used tethering twice, both on occasions when I traveled to a place without wifi. It is not reasonable to pay that over-priced tethering plan for rare use of this feature.
I also doubt that AT&T will be able to catch all tethering use on all of their customers. Obvious cases with excess abuse make sense, but not rare and low use, like mine. I read somewhere that Verizon began policing tethering use on their customers on gingerbread, but even then some users reported they were able to get around it.

Thank you, fernandezhjr. That's an excellent point and helpful.
If that's what makes the difference, I wonder if it is possible to write an app that can create a wifi spot using the stock apn. It doesn't sound too difficult to do, but maybe I'm wrong.
I also wonder if tethering via bluetooth makes any difference too?

Slowest phone I've EVER used!!!

Ok, I just got the Galaxy S 4G today, and it is by far the slowest piece of crap I have ever used. It was going very slow, this is even after I immediately took one back and exchanged it for another. It took it over an hour to finally sync my google contacts. I'm still waiting (5 hours later) for it to finish synching my gmail. I rooted it, hoping that might help, but to no avail. I tried to download a new launcher from the Market, but again, that is taking ages to even begin downloading. It says it's running on 4G, but I can't see it. This is slow, even for Edge. Am I missing something? I am really considering taking it back tomorrow for the G2 and just buying the HTC Sensation in a few months (getting that anyway, lol)
Sounds like your data plan has been throttled back. Cause mine is fast and smooth for still running rfs
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
Why would it be throttled already? I just got it today, brand new. It even runs slow on WiFi

Should I take it back and switch it for yet another one? I know the possibility of getting two bad phones is slim, but it IS possible
EDIT: Ok, I did a hard reset. Finally managed to get the market downloading like it should, everything synched up nicely. Now my only issue is USB mass storage won't work. It allows me to turn it on. (EDIT: As I typed this out, the drive recognized it, it just took a long time lol)

Haven't had a single problem with mine.
Additionally, you don't know slow till you've used a G1 for two years straight LOL.
Instead of ranting about the phone's poor performance, why not read through the stickies and try to figure it out yourself? People forget that these are still phones after all, and not a mobile computer.
I'll predict it now, you're next thread is to complain about the lack of internal memory and how you've already used it up after DLing a few apps.
the whole purpose of this site is to "improve" the performance of your phone.
if you don't like the replacement phone, take it back to a different store. have that store run speed tests etc while you're there
Well, thanks for the useful input, especially the last two posters. The purpose of this thread was to find out if all the phones were like this, or perhaps I got a bad one. I have an Evo, and it runs smoothly. I know what a phone should be, this one runs worse than my G1 did years ago. And I did a search, and found nothing that pertained to the 4G, just the original Galaxy S. I read all about freeing up the internal memory, removing the fota files, bloatware, etc. All of this I already did with my Evo, and every Android phone I've had before that. I simply posted here to see if I could find out why this "new" phone was performing so poorly out of the box.

Now that your question has been answered could you change the title of this thread? It is somewhat unfair with the phone model. It was more like a unit malfunctioning.

Yes, please change the title.
Just a suggestion, next time you have an issue, maybe just ask if anyoone is having any simalar issues. Trust me you will get much better responses. For the most part everyone here doesn't mind helping other with problems. It's all about how you phrase the question, or just ask.
If you ever need any help feel free to PM me, I am usually pretty quick to get back to people.

The Biggest Let Down About This Phone Is...It's XDA Forum
I have had my phone for 2 weeks now and am generally happy with it. I now look at my HD2 and can't believe I carried that beast around. Just as I did with my HD2 I come to XDA everyday and read through the forum. Though I rarely post, except for an issue I can't fix on my own, I have to say that the biggest let down about having this phone has been it's XDA forum.
What type of forum do you want this to be? Do you want this to be the type of forum where the uninitiated are intimidated to post or to get involved because they frequently see some uptight, douche who flames a poster like they had just killed his dog? He called your phone slow. And?
I really don't think that is what will grow this into a dynamic forum where those looking for answers or knowledge will add a bookmark and return to then download (and donate/buy a beer) for a developer. Take a look at some of the more popular phone specific forums here and you will notice that in general flaming is frowned upon and there is a sense of community.
I'm sorry that my first introduction to the 'community' of SGS4G owners and phone enthusiasts has been like this, but if the regulars here don't begin to welcome new posts then this will become a forgotten forum lacking any real content.

Could not have said it better myself!
How hard is it, that if someone posts something you don't agree with/you feel is stupid, to just move on? At least put your 2 cents in, in a constructive way.
For some reason the vibrant forums were the worst at these practices. Even to the point of dev's quiting/taking there work elsewhere.
Please, I beg of you, don't make this forum as hostile of an enviroment as the vibrants'. It is just as easy to link someone to the help they need, or help them yourself as it is to flame them.
That being said 80% of the community feel this way. The other 20% are just more vocal and therefore seem like the majority. We have a great comminity to work with, please don't judge the whole because of a few disrespectful people.
Mine is flying. Coming from a Mytouch 3G, this is a huge upgrade.

Crack Flashers come take a look

First of all I am by no means a developer, I want to start getting into it though so I just want to try to put a little something out there which is by no mean ground breaking there are tons of better options I am sure. I am building it off the 2.11 leak and I am currently taking out some of the fat and adding HTC custom kernel. I am searching around other roms peaking here and there just for ideas, again I am building off leak not coping anyone's work. I want to know if any one has any ideas to what .apk they want in and which ones they want removed. I am not much of a facebook person I would take all that crap out. This is going to be close to stock so it going to be for people who dont want to much custom and want to stay close to home. I also want to know if there is demand for any of these ROMs. I know people crave update after update but this will prob not be updated till the offical OTA comes out. I am just building this for myself and want to know if anyone want to try it also. I added back in WiFi teather and I also removed the TetheringGuard.apk which I have noticed some developers have left in place to keep these kinda apps from working. Again I can read inside the forum and see there are plenty of ROMs is anyone looking for a ROM like I am building. I will have it done in a few days I dont want to rush it and be crappy. I am also working on including a theme with it so if I do that may take a little longer. Theme will be based on Green which will blend in with the name of the ROM. If I see some yes answers and there is enough of them I will add my ROM no longer than a week from now under the name Gr33n3nvy with the 3's being in honor of DT whos work and lack of developing knowledge prior to building got me into this. I dont have Chingy on speed dial so please be easy with the comments LOL. More will come as soon as I read all the web sites I have people sending me.
Good luck dude, cant wait to see it Chingy has been very helpful to those looking to get started.

I will def need some help by then. I am bringing my lap top to work next 6 days to just tinker around with some of the stuff. I am hoping a week will be enough time to get what I want done to it. So far just getting some ideas to what people want who dont want tooo much custom.

Depends on how much help I get, I learn very quickly I got straight A's in college for my medical field and didn't know anything about it. I taught myself everything I know about computers which includes a wide range of things. If I'm wrong I apologize but from the little i have done in making stock roms is if you take out the Tetheringguard apk, the verizon hotspot will not work. I just mention this because I have had alot of requests to keep it in because alot use the official verizon hotspot. It doesnt affect wifi tethering apk either way from what I can tell. Just wanted to throw this FYI out there to you.

Someone fix this GPS!

I am about to throw this thing out the window. It holds a signal better than my Inspire but I'm in a new state (Louisiana) so I NEED my GPS to work and even Telenav just WILL NOT get a GPS lock and fails. It used to work before ... Ugh I'm so over it! And searching for GPS doesn't get me anywhere... Can someone tell me how to make this thing lock on to the satellites? GPS test finds ONE and it won't lock even after 30 minutes!
What [email protected]## rom/kernel are you #(%$$# running?
No longer sent from my BlackBerry.
If you need GPS that badly, you need to look at garmin or tomtom.
The only way to fix GPS on the Captivate. Download the Amazon app on your phone...then use that to buy a new phone. I heard a couple people did that and now have a 10/10 satellite lock with 3m accuracy.

Watch the swearing in the forums. I will say this only once.
As for your issue the GPS on the captivate has always been known to be less then perfect. the GPS built into a phone should never be used to replace a stand alone GPS mainly when you are new to an area.

not trying to argue, but the rule about swearing is gone from the " member conduct "http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
however it does say to be aware of what might be offensive to others.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.

First time I have ever been warned about swearing... And I've been on here for years. I'll try to mind it but if its such a big issue then why not just filter it like all the other forums?
As for the GPS - my Captivate used to have PERFECT GPS locks - and that fix didn't work either... As for the radio, its because KJ2 doesn't work well at ALL in my area...
I have gone over most of your posts sense last night and for the most part you have not been swearing.
As for the rule. Yes it was removed (will be put back soon) as It is understood that we treat each other with respect and understand that kids come to this forum alot. So the swearing is not allowed as it is not excepted in any polite setting.
TRusselo you know me well from my time with the captivate and you know that it is as simple as if you wouldnt want your kids reading it then dont post it.
The sheer disrespect floating around the forums has gotten out of hand and the swearing is a Big sign of it.
While swearing at each other maybe cool in high school or on the street we require that more respect be shown while here.
EtherealRemnant You have been here for a while your right. So you should know better. A few years ago the title of this thread would have been ban worthy, but I am in a good mood so a warning I think will make my point just as well.
Well I apologize for being offensive - I'm sure you can understand how annoying the Captivate can be as a device... I will try to refrain from swearing in the future but I wasn't directing it at a specific person, more at the phone. I understand about the kids though.

Yes I can understand completely. Thank you.
I flashed the latest leak of KJ3 found in the development section, and with the stock kernel and stock everything (only rooted), my GPS performance improved. More than once was I able to get a lock faster when not moving and maintain it a little longer after driving. Of course, it was still pretty crappy... after a few minutes, the phone went back to searching and took ages to lock again, which it did only after I stopped and waited. But I guess it was better than the GPS on any other ROM or even stock that I have tried.

And its so annoying to flash things over and over to get it right. I wish I could combine certain parts of my Inspire with the Captivate... Basically throw the Captivate internal storage and antenna into the Inspire... >_>

While swearing at each other maybe cool in high school or on the street we require that more respect be shown while here.

once again, not arguing, i love a good discussion,
i thought it was the position of xda that xda is not for kids, it is for developers. and that xda caters to the devs, not the random passing people.
and yes some developers are kids, but kids with enough intellect and smarts to know what bad words are and are able to make up their own minds about using them.
I know the rule is somewhat lifted and i refrain from using the words unless they are required to emphasize a point. (sometimes really frickin needed).
but back to topic....
here are some CWM3 flashable GPS configs i put together.
stock Gingerbread ATT
stock Gingerbread Rogers
pb3 GPS tweaks
my personal WIP GPS config (mostly from JSV and some from h3llstorms config)

Grow up people. We try not to use profanity but as adults we also look the other way when it is used. Just because you dont want to see/hear it used doesnt mean you can impose upon others that don't have a problem with it. There are plenty of forums available that won't hurt your delicate feelings.
Carry on.... /rollseyes

Sorry I don't look the other way and anyone that knows me as a mod knows this to be true. It is not a matter of hurt feelings it is a matter of respect. Swearing while talking to someone or asking for help is rude, uncalled for, and not allowed. Simple as that. Now I have been guilty of a swear word every now and then myself, it happens.
And your right T. We do cater to developers which are to be showed respect. That means no swearing at them.
I will not debate this further. Swearing in the forums is not tolerated period. Wanna swear at someone then don't do it here.
As for the kids part as much as I would love for XDA to go back to a true developers site we have to accept that average people are here now and that encludes every kid that gets their parents to buy them an Android/WP device so they can be cool too, even though when they do something they don't understand like flashing a rom it just makes them look dumber then they are.
Trusselo: you do realize that a lot younger generation of kids are getting into things like this. i bet theres more 12-15 year old kids on here than you think which is the future for everybody. i dont see know point in swearing around here anyways.
on topic: ya my gps sucks bad to. i dont even bother to use it

[Q] What's the best way to remove crap on ATT?

So, can someone link me to a simple, current guide to rooting and removing crapware? Bonus points if I can revert all changes so they can't screw me on my warranty.
I have an AT&T One X, purchased in the last week. I can post version info if necessary.
I want to ditch the yellowpages garbage and all the att garbage (wifi, navigator, cityid, etc) and probably twitter and facebook, though I don't really care if they're there. I'd also like to enable tethering if I can.
I had a ROM on my last phone (samsung infuse) which did all this, but I don't think I want to put a ROM on this one just yet. So, I'm not new to rooting, but I'm new to HTC, and new to removing/freezing bloat. I'm running linux.
Oh, and I saw the one-click root thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
But I read that it makes your phone show *TAMPERED* and lock you out? That makes me terrified of running it.
Edit: Oh, and I have software number 1.85.502.3 710RD... I don't think it would work anyway.
Here are the two best places to start for this stuff:
Number 1
Number 2
Good luck!
You can disable them without voiding warranty. The only thing i couldn't disable was AT&T ready to go.

Because I obviously haven't been trying to use those. Seriously, these forums contain some of the most unapproachable instructions that exist, instructions that have the potential to brick your device, and if you ask for some advice on not getting your $600 device completely ****ed by them, you get linked to google. I help users of various open source projects all the goddamn time, and I never go HERP DERP LMGTFY.
So give real advice or just don't reply. It's not helpful or constructive, it doesn't make you cool, it doesn't even clean up the forums. If you know nothing and are posting to be a jerk, then you're just bumping my post for me. If you're deliberately withholding information and posting to be a jerk, then you're actively increasing forum clutter by keeping me around longer. Either way, the outcome is that the "signal to noise" ratio of the forum goes to **** because half the posts are "OMG GOOGLE," because this attitude is actively encouraged for some reason, when in reality it shouldn't even be tolerated.
Holy crap dude, chill the eff out. My post was completely lighthearted and I was fully prepared to help you and give you whatever help you needed. Hence the that I ended it with. Not anymore!
And you know what's not tolerated around here? Farking n00bs who CLAIM they exhausted searching when it is more than evident they didn't. Answers to ALL your questions can be found in guides ON EVERY DAMN ANDROID FORUM ON THE INTERNET, including here on xda where you decided to post the same exact thread that has already been posted thrice today by other noobs asking for help without wanting to do any legwork of their own.
And if you can't understand the simple "herp derp click here and watch your phone get rooted automagically for you" instructions then maybe you shouldn't be rooting. Smart phones are for smart people.
GOOD DAY.

You can disable apps, or uninstall them by going to settings>apps, or by going to the menu on your app drawer and selecting manage apps. once there, you can tap on apps that you don't want then tapping on them individually and selecting the option that you want.
Titanium backup. The end.

I've dedicated the last hour or more to searching for this ****. Once you've been into modding your phone for a while, you don't understand how difficult it is to get started.
I'm trying to go about this with caution, so I don't get screwed. I cannot afford to replace the phone if I screw up and HTC and ATT decide to throw me under the bus. Maybe the people around here who seem to own 3-5 phones at a time can.
The various roots that I found appeared to have users replying that they didn't work with the latest revisions to 1.85. So I'm still not even sure I can do that. Maybe those users were full of crap, maybe not. How am I supposed to know?
Back to the subject of the phone, it looks like CleanROM is probably my best option, but it will require unlocking the bootloader. So far I've seen instructions for rooting 1.85, but I'm unsure about unlocking.

Lets start over, ok?
To root your phone, there is a one click thread that is stickied in development that works great. I have used it 6 times now and have had no issues. It doesn't always work the first time but usually does the second. it will give you a "tampered" banner on your bootloader but that goes away if you RUU back to stock. It absolutely does work on the latest software (1.85).
Here's the thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
For removal of bloatware, use Titanium Backup. Been using it for 3 years, and I swear by it. When you select an item for deletion, back it up first just in case.
Here- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Use these two things, I promise you won't get screwed. I'm sorry for yelling.

a little pointed, but true.. i remember my first post here on xda and I was labelled as a noob for asking a question. some people are just too sensitive for these type of forums. To op, if you cannot handle the "heat" I would tell you what I was told back then: "xda is for people who want to tinker with their phone, or for those interested in learning how to do so and contribute to the community. If that's not you, go to a much more general forum like android central." Now, you can bash me like you did to that guy who was just joking, or you can take what I said for what it means and run with it. Read up, that will do wonders for you.

Hmm, thank you for the help. I still haven't been able to get that root to work. adb wait-for-device finishes, but then the adb push just sits there forever.

I got it to work by switching to a different USB host.
Edit: but it said no update found, so I'm restarting and setting the clock forward.

Would have been next. Always use a port on the back of the computer for anything related to root, unlock, or flash.

Well, it's my laptop, and I have to use virtualbox to get winderz. So, it was probably something related to that.
Anyway, I swapped it from a usb2 port to a usb3 port.
Yeah on a desktop it can matter. I have yet to see an explanation of the difference between ports on the front and back, and why adb will refuse to work with some/most front ports. Just seems to be that way.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
So I'm on my fourth or fifth try, still "no update available."
Edit: Ok, tried it 7+ times, how can I eliminate winderz? Is this exploit using a patched adb?

Tethering with custom rom with t-mobile unlimited

Before you start. I did search "tethering t-mobile unlimited" before posting this but everything pre-dated back to september. I'm sure there's been some development since then.
Let me start of by saying I'm a script kiddie, I can hack things, never developed, going to school for it. I know jack about phones but I think I understand a small amount. I own this crappy little phone with straight talk. Lame. T-mobile came out with unlimited and I want to set it up into a hotspot so I can power my devices on the go and MAYBE cancel charter internet and use my phone to power all my interwebz instead.
How safe is it? VERY worried about a banhammer? Am I overthinking this? My friend has a custom rom installed and he says it's "native tethering". Does native imply it's pure? Undetectable? How detectable is this? What are the best tools as practices to avoid termination.

I'm just gonna say that I saw this when you first posted it, but I didn't say anything because I looked down the page and saw a recently updated thread on the topic and assumed you'd find it. So... I'm guessing that's why no one is really responding here.
