Hey everyone. I have decided to get rid of some HTC apks and replace them with AOSP apks. (Music, Dialer, Browser, etc.) I am not 100% sure on which ones I will be replacing, but can someone provide a download for AOSP apks? That would be awesome because I know I can download a few ROMs here and then take out the AOSP apks, but my internet is REALLY slow, so that would take forever. Also, feel free to let me know on which ones I should take out and why. I would really like a second opinion on what all can be replaced and if replacing any would help. Let me know! Thanks to the one who uploads the apks!

that info would be great to have I would like the aosp dialer but don't know what the apk is called so I can pull it off one of the other ROMS

Definitely replace HTC mms. AOSP mms is so much faster, especially if you're using the AOSP keyboard. The email gives you a combined inbox, which is kind of nice - but attachments might not download properly. Music is nice and fast, but you don't get the lockscreen controls. Contacts/dialer is kinda personal preference. Browser always shows the taskbar and addressbar, unlike the HTC browser; it also seems a bit faster from startup. However, doubletap zoom might not work. Oh, the AOSP browser wont work without the com.cyanogenmod.android.jar and com.cyanogenmod.android.xml files (those are found in roms, so you might be out of luck with the browser...)
these apks are from Darch's roms.
What's needed to get AOSP contacts.apk to work with my awesome DCv2.06 setup? I imagine some framework is not in place - something deep like that?
Attempted to install (thought it would fail or at least not work if it did install) and it said 'Not Installed' and an OK button.

You have to push it in to system/app ... installing from a file explorer should only work for the email apk.

Wondering the same thing myself!
stuckinstupid...PLEASE change your name (Because you're stuckonsmart!), because you just got me the dialer I've always wanted! I didn't think to pull it from anyone, and further more, I didn't think to push it. I kept installing it.
thanks for the AOSP dialer i been looking for it for awhile now thanks
now im trying to decide on which MMS app i want to use i like the AOSP one better than the HTC one but it won't let you send V-cards(contact card) via MMS.

Naw, you're going to have to choose one or the other...renaming the apk won't rename the actual app

Mms --> push/replace mms.apk in system/app
contacts--> push/without replacing anything...you have to keep the HTC dialer alongside the AOSP dialer
music--> push and delete HTCmusc.apk in system/app
email--> push/without replacing anything OR simply install with file browser...you can have both HTC mail and AOSP mail at the same time
REMEMBER TO BACKUP REPLACED APKS TO SDCARD

What about the browser?
Which rom you are using would this work on Flipz?
Never mind It does work on Flipz 2.1d

For the browser, remove the existing browser.apk, replace it with the AOSP browser.apk, THEN you must place these files in the corresponding paths in your rom:

Those files can be found in Darchvanilla (in those paths).

Lol. Was just about to say I just pushed Contacts.apk to my phone (running Fresh 2.0d) and it works perfectly .
EDIT** Only thing I have found not working with Contacts.apk from AOSP is how they are listed. If you go into contacts, you can see them listed correctly (alphabetically) but the displayed alphabet is technically incorrect (if that makes any sense). For example, the names are in the correct order, but the "A" is listed under "W" even though it is up top as it should be.

Just added it. Use the Contacts.apk that someone attached above and you have to push it to your phone as a /system/app through ADB. Nothing to it. Works great, no modification needed.
Most importantly it allows you to select which groups from your contacts in google that you want to sync. An option that broke or was removed in all 2.1 based roms out right now.

Thanks for posting this.
I'm still having some trouble getting Contacts.apk on my Hero. I'm running DC 2.072.
I'm able to successfully push the Contacts.apk from this thread with the command adb push Contacts.apk /sytem/app while in recovery mode. When I rebooted, though, I couldn't find it on the phone. There's no "Contacts" app, and the only "Phone" app is the HTC one.
Any suggestions?? I have also previously tried installing the APK by copying it to the SD card and then using an app installer, but the install would either fail, or I would get an FC when launching the phone app.
Hey, not sure if this really belongs here, or in General, but since its semi-hacking the system, I'll post here first.
It seems, so far, that Touchwiz isn't nearly as deeply integrated as Sense is, and that at least some of Samsung's Modified Apps can just be backed-up, deleted, and replaced with the stock apps from Android 2.1 (using apps ripped from CM5.0.8 for Nexus 1 for my attempts.)
So, I thought I'd start a list of stock Android 2.1 apps that people have made work on the vibrant. I know a lot of people are waiting for CM or other custom roms and alternate recovery images, but in the mean time, lets start customizing!
I have confirmed the following to work, but only after the original touchwiz apps are deleted from /system/app, then the stock apps are installed via the standard installer to /data/app and cp over to /system/app then reboot
Music.apk
DeskClock.apk
Calendar.apk
CalendarProvider.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Mms.apk (NEW! added 7/21/2010)
Another pleasant surprise, is that I now have the default Calendar, music, and news & weather widgets on my vibrant!
Again, adb push didn't work for anything since I can't remount with r/w access yet, but a su adb shell allowed me to busybox cp them to /sytem/app once they were installed.
I've tried the same method with the CM5.0.8 LiveWallpapers with no success, so maybe someone else has some suggestions?
My next step is to test out bringing the original phone.apk and contacts.apk/contactsprovider.apk over
7/21/2010
Got the default messaging app from CM 5.0.8 brought over, still having tons of trouble with the default dialer and contacts/contacts provider, samsung has buried their signature for these deep in android somewhere, even outside of /data/system/packages.xml so any attempt to install the CM versions even after removing the Touchwiz apps fail.
cheers everyone!
This was copied from the vibrant section just thought you guys should know. Also the member that wrote it was s0niqu3
Thanks. I've missed my music and News & Weather widgets for the last day or so. Really hoping CM6 gets ported over to the Captivate soon. I'd imagine it probably won't until they have a final 6.0
can you post GenieWidget.apk?
nvm, found it
What method should be used to copy from /data/app to /system/app?
Thanks.
Yup, I love geniewidget weather and news from my Nexus One. So simple, best small weather and news widget out there. grab it over at 4shared .....
Has anyone been able to get the stock 2.1 Calendar and Calendar Service Provider to work?
I uninstalled the TouchWiz versions of both (using Titanium Backup), uninstalled both from "Settings-Manage Applications", rebooted, installed stock Calendar and Calendar Service Provider apk's to the /data/app internal storage (I've already done the side-loading apps mod).
This seems to work fine except for syncing with Google. The calendar sync fails every time which I assume has to do with a Calendar Service Provider install problem. The Calendar still works locally but isn't nearly as useful without properly working Google sync.
Does anyone have any hints for getting this to work or have had success themselves with the Captivate (I know people have got it working with the Vibrant, but their suggestions haven't worked out as of yet).
Oh, and to make matter worse, the TouchWiz Calendar and TouchWiz Calender Service provider both fail when I try to reinstall them.
Is there a list of the names of the TouchWiz apps that need to be removed? Most are obvious but I'm not 100% sure what to remove.
EDIT: I have gotten music, mms, calendar, calendar provider, geniewidget and deskclock all installed correctly on my Captivate.
Just trying to figure out the correct procedure... to install (for example) the Android calendar, should the following steps be performed:
- Extract calendar.apk and calendarprovider.apk from one of Cyanogen's ROMs
- Copy both apk files to sd card and install via the built-in installer
- use busybox to cp each app from /data/app to /system/app
- reboot and enjoy?
Thanks,
Does anyone have a way of uploading the stock browser.apk from the JH2 build? I uninstalled it by mistake, trying to install the stock browser from CM 5.0.8, thinking there was a difference.
When I still had my Dream a few weeks ago, I had CM6, and I couldn't stand the ADWLauncher they put on it, so I replaced it with the stock Launcher2.apk. First thing I did when I got my Captivate and rooted it was I replaced the TWLauncher apk with the stock eclair Launcher2.apk. It was totally baller
Can you post links for these stock 2.1 apps? I would like to try them, but have no way of getting them.

I must know where to acquire this Launcher2.apk you speak of.
Edit: If any of you would like the default Nexus One Launcher2.apk, with the 3D app drawer, confirmed working 100% on my Captivate, here it is.

I'm curious about this as well. I've followed the instructions but when I try to install the Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk via Astro or App Installer I get "Application not installed".
I've removed all remnants of TWCalendar and TWCalendarProvider. I've rebooted after every step. I've pushed the APK's to the sdcard. But still cannot install the stock 2.1 Calendar.
Any suggestions?

You also need to uninstall calendar related stuff from Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications (ie... com.android.calendar and com.android.calendar.provider). Reboot and install the stock calendar apps.

Does anyone know if the stock calendar will work with Exchange? I assume the sync componenent still works and the data is in the internal db - so the stock calendar should display it and phone number and url links should work.
Hopefully someone has tried this.

I used the apk's from cyanogenmod . com
CyanogenMod Forum> Downloads> Stable Mod> Nexus One
Nexus One update-cm-5.0.8-N1-signed.zip
Also, the trick to getting the stock installed.
I used Titanium backup to uninstall Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk, reboot, then go to application management and delete com.android.calendar and com.android.calendar.provider... reboot, and then I copied the apks from sd to system/app with terminal Emulator.
Is there a noob guide for this? Step by step?
so i'm dumb i know but i deleted my messaging app from my samsung captivate (2.1 rooted). I've tried a few different times to find mms.apk but none of them want to install. i usually will put them in my sdcard folder and try and open them with package installer but it will just say application not installed. I've been using handcent (which is great) but it will only receive sms but not mms. does anyone know how to install mms.apk or just a way to get handcent to do mms without it.
thanks
edit: tried adb install through terminal comes up with the error install_failed_dexopt i know i have enough memory for the app so i presume it means that the file im trying to install is corrupted but i'm pretty new to it so im clueless.
I'm running Open Soju 0.2.5 on my Nexus S 4G, loving the ROM, but decided I liked the Messaging app from CM7 where it allows white on black, SMS splitting, etc. And since 0.2.5 is deodexed, I thought I would try moving the mms.apk included in CM7 over to my System > Apps folder on my phone..
Successfully moved over, installed and it runs great! Only problem is, every time I reboot my phone the original mms.apk seems to be installed, I have to go into root explorer and re-install the new mms.apk.. anyway to avoid it being replaced upon reboot?
Thanks

I thought you could change the entire apps theme but I guess I was wrong

No matter what I do, I can't load up the CM MMS app. I followed the instructions to a tee but when my phone loads, it goes back to the stock MMS app. I tried deleting it through Titanium Backup and had the same issue. Did you try to just rename it MMS.apk.bak? Also there's an MMS .odex file which needs to be renamed. You need r/ w permissions as I guess you already know but I would say its not sticking possibly. Try this MMS apk, its inverted http://db.tt/lVifHTJc

The stock app and odex file too, saved me many a times doing that instead of deleting it completely and either you have to restore a nandroid or look for the apk. This way if things don't work out just use any root explorer and remove the .bak and reboot
