[Q] Replacing MMS.apk Question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running Open Soju 0.2.5 on my Nexus S 4G, loving the ROM, but decided I liked the Messaging app from CM7 where it allows white on black, SMS splitting, etc. And since 0.2.5 is deodexed, I thought I would try moving the mms.apk included in CM7 over to my System > Apps folder on my phone..
Successfully moved over, installed and it runs great! Only problem is, every time I reboot my phone the original mms.apk seems to be installed, I have to go into root explorer and re-install the new mms.apk.. anyway to avoid it being replaced upon reboot?
Thanks

Hmmmm maybe remove the stock version, then push your modded version?

Stock 2.1 Apps working

Hey, not sure if this really belongs here, or in General, but since its semi-hacking the system, I'll post here first.
It seems, so far, that Touchwiz isn't nearly as deeply integrated as Sense is, and that at least some of Samsung's Modified Apps can just be backed-up, deleted, and replaced with the stock apps from Android 2.1 (using apps ripped from CM5.0.8 for Nexus 1 for my attempts.)
So, I thought I'd start a list of stock Android 2.1 apps that people have made work on the vibrant. I know a lot of people are waiting for CM or other custom roms and alternate recovery images, but in the mean time, lets start customizing!
I have confirmed the following to work, but only after the original touchwiz apps are deleted from /system/app, then the stock apps are installed via the standard installer to /data/app and cp over to /system/app then reboot
Music.apk
DeskClock.apk
Calendar.apk
CalendarProvider.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Mms.apk (NEW! added 7/21/2010)
Another pleasant surprise, is that I now have the default Calendar, music, and news & weather widgets on my vibrant!
Again, adb push didn't work for anything since I can't remount with r/w access yet, but a su adb shell allowed me to busybox cp them to /sytem/app once they were installed.
I've tried the same method with the CM5.0.8 LiveWallpapers with no success, so maybe someone else has some suggestions?
My next step is to test out bringing the original phone.apk and contacts.apk/contactsprovider.apk over
7/21/2010
Got the default messaging app from CM 5.0.8 brought over, still having tons of trouble with the default dialer and contacts/contacts provider, samsung has buried their signature for these deep in android somewhere, even outside of /data/system/packages.xml so any attempt to install the CM versions even after removing the Touchwiz apps fail.
cheers everyone!
This was copied from the vibrant section just thought you guys should know. Also the member that wrote it was s0niqu3
Thanks. I've missed my music and News & Weather widgets for the last day or so. Really hoping CM6 gets ported over to the Captivate soon. I'd imagine it probably won't until they have a final 6.0
can you post GenieWidget.apk?
nvm, found it
What method should be used to copy from /data/app to /system/app?
Thanks.
Yup, I love geniewidget weather and news from my Nexus One. So simple, best small weather and news widget out there. grab it over at 4shared .....
Has anyone been able to get the stock 2.1 Calendar and Calendar Service Provider to work?
I uninstalled the TouchWiz versions of both (using Titanium Backup), uninstalled both from "Settings-Manage Applications", rebooted, installed stock Calendar and Calendar Service Provider apk's to the /data/app internal storage (I've already done the side-loading apps mod).
This seems to work fine except for syncing with Google. The calendar sync fails every time which I assume has to do with a Calendar Service Provider install problem. The Calendar still works locally but isn't nearly as useful without properly working Google sync.
Does anyone have any hints for getting this to work or have had success themselves with the Captivate (I know people have got it working with the Vibrant, but their suggestions haven't worked out as of yet).
Oh, and to make matter worse, the TouchWiz Calendar and TouchWiz Calender Service provider both fail when I try to reinstall them.
Is there a list of the names of the TouchWiz apps that need to be removed? Most are obvious but I'm not 100% sure what to remove.
EDIT: I have gotten music, mms, calendar, calendar provider, geniewidget and deskclock all installed correctly on my Captivate.
Just trying to figure out the correct procedure... to install (for example) the Android calendar, should the following steps be performed:
- Extract calendar.apk and calendarprovider.apk from one of Cyanogen's ROMs
- Copy both apk files to sd card and install via the built-in installer
- use busybox to cp each app from /data/app to /system/app
- reboot and enjoy?
Thanks,
Does anyone have a way of uploading the stock browser.apk from the JH2 build? I uninstalled it by mistake, trying to install the stock browser from CM 5.0.8, thinking there was a difference.
When I still had my Dream a few weeks ago, I had CM6, and I couldn't stand the ADWLauncher they put on it, so I replaced it with the stock Launcher2.apk. First thing I did when I got my Captivate and rooted it was I replaced the TWLauncher apk with the stock eclair Launcher2.apk. It was totally baller
Can you post links for these stock 2.1 apps? I would like to try them, but have no way of getting them.

I must know where to acquire this Launcher2.apk you speak of.
Edit: If any of you would like the default Nexus One Launcher2.apk, with the 3D app drawer, confirmed working 100% on my Captivate, here it is.
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/01/22/install-launcher-apk-from-android-2-1-onto-2-0-1-2/
Sideload it onto your phone first, and try it, I'm not replacing TWLauncher with it just yet, but it seems like it'll happen eventually.

I'm curious about this as well. I've followed the instructions but when I try to install the Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk via Astro or App Installer I get "Application not installed".
I've removed all remnants of TWCalendar and TWCalendarProvider. I've rebooted after every step. I've pushed the APK's to the sdcard. But still cannot install the stock 2.1 Calendar.
Any suggestions?

You also need to uninstall calendar related stuff from Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications (ie... com.android.calendar and com.android.calendar.provider). Reboot and install the stock calendar apps.

Does anyone know if the stock calendar will work with Exchange? I assume the sync componenent still works and the data is in the internal db - so the stock calendar should display it and phone number and url links should work.
Hopefully someone has tried this.

I just installed the stock Calendar app and don't see an option to sync with Exchange Calendar. Without that I maybe restoring from backup.

I used the apk's from cyanogenmod . com
CyanogenMod Forum> Downloads> Stable Mod> Nexus One
Nexus One update-cm-5.0.8-N1-signed.zip
Also, the trick to getting the stock installed.
I used Titanium backup to uninstall Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk, reboot, then go to application management and delete com.android.calendar and com.android.calendar.provider... reboot, and then I copied the apks from sd to system/app with terminal Emulator.
Is there a noob guide for this? Step by step?

[Q] Best ROM to Use as a Starting Point

I recently got into flashing custom ROMS onto my Droid X. I have had it since launch and was rooted from the day the first root was released, rooted after the 2.2 OTA and recently, have gotten kinda bored of the same old launcher pro and got into looking at custom ROMs. Last night I successfully went through the process of flashing ZapX semi-blurless rom. I loved the speed and not having all the moto junk but have noticed that you can't necessarily use themes on blurless ROMs. I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a good ROM or themed rom that I could manually remove bloatware or at the least a themed ZapX rom? Thanks for the help in advance!
rubix focused 0.5, period
Haven't tried zapX yet. I've run Rubix for a few days and it's been great. Just loaded Apex this morning, but haven't had time to 'run it through its' paces'.
As for themeing, if you are comfortable with editing the zip file for the theme, just remove the blur related APK's that have been removed from your system
May take a little investigative work to make sure you remove the right ones, but it's doable.
FYI, Fabolous (Apex) also released a version of his NexTheme for the Apex ROM and it looks pretty nice.
Thanks for the help! Im probably gonna use the RubiX ROM and mess around with the .zip
I have fabolous nextheme with teenfaces + bigdx (swype + multitouch) + removed blur related themed apks + win7font (probably from env theme) + vanilla lock screen mod
And I am loving it

One of these days you'll work up enough nerve to branch out and truly customize your device.
LMAO
so if i have a rom installed (the deodexed 2.2 OTA that someone released), and then I install another rom on top of it, is it completely replaced?
whereas if i install 1 theme on top of another, they coexist?
also, themes can only go on top of roms that are deodexed, correct?

The way I understand is that the theme only replaces portions of the ROM that realate to the visuals. It leaves the meat of the ROM applying to it operating intact. Correct me if im wrong.

Yes & no. Themes generally only replace certain files, but many times those files are certain application APK's. And the theme may ADD apk's that you didn't have (ie, you have a blur-less ROM, and put on a theme that includes blur stuff).
If two themes don't change/replace the same file, then yes portions may co-exist.
Not all ROM installations are completely wiping /system. Some of them only replace the portions of /system that have been modified. Thus, you could theoretically get some intermixing of two ROMS as well.

if im getting ready to go from an OTA 2.2 rooted w/ build.prop mods and bloatware frozen; what would you suggest doing to retain a list or backup of my current aps to know what i want when i get back up and running after flashing to rubix blurry? appbrain sync be sufficient?
also, syncing contacts/etc possible via backup assistant; or is that removed as well (or down-loadable in the market)?
im looking to get back to where i am now widget, app, contacts, etc wise after getting back up with the least problems due to no syncing or having to write everything down.

Appbrain will certainly work for creating/maintaining a list of your current apps.
The Froyo Market app, however, also does this if you have your google account set to backup. When I re-flash (way more than I would like to admit ), first time I sign into my google account, and go into market, it starts downloading (a very long list!) of apps that I had.
Note that this will just get your apps/widgets installed. Any data/settings/screen layouts will need to be re-created. I've not found a good way to restore this yet. While there are some programs (titanium) that will do this, it's been known to create problems.
As for contacts, I have both an exchange and g-mail accounts. My contacts are automatically synced there. If you put all of your contacts on your google account, they should sync as soon as you sign in.
I don't know much about 'offline' methods of contact syncing.
For starters I would go with 928 Black Glass

As long as you don't use Titanium to restore anything for /system it works fine. that is where the problems all come from as people restore /system things from an old build that does not work on there new build.
IMO the best way to restore apps if you want all your data settings back is to use My Backup Pro.

[Q] Need a little help please.

I am trying to change the camera and the email in the Weapon rom to the black email from Faux's AOSP and also the camera from the same rom. I tried installing with the apk's but no go. The camera actually installed on my old Cliq (test dummie) just fine but wont on the G2x. I switched out the apk's in the rom zip and am going to attempt to re-flash it. My question is this: do I have to wipe everything and am I going to loose all my setting and rings (i switched the audio file in system with one that has the tones I want) and whatnot. Or will all that remain the same if I flash overtop this rom?? Thanks
As always, I will be sure to hit the Thanks button

phone apk question for GB

I would like to know what process is entailed in changing out a phone.apk
I am running a gingerbread 2.3.4 rom deodexed, but with a stock dialer and I hate it.
I have seen some roms using an ics style dialer thats much cleaner, but I cant figure out how to make the switch.
I tried asking for and installing a copy of the ics style phone.apk ( renamed old one, copied new one in, set permissisons, rebooted to recovery, wiped dalvik, rebooted, and fail - the lock screen came up but when unlocked the phone was just black and I was forced to cwm reinstall rom).
Pointers?
i belive you installed a wrongrom or something in the system that went wrong like it being odexed or deodexed

Also try a different APK, they don't all work with all ROMs
Also, you can flash a theme with a better dialer or use a theme manager engine if you are on CM7 base too.
ok, so basically switching out the contacts.apk and phone.apk should have worked with proper permissions set up, I just used a wrong type of apk?
I hadnt thought about just theming it - havent gotten into that yet, but thanks for the suggestion, as I may look into that then.

It could work with another APK, depends where you got it from. A Sense APK would never work in an AOSP ROM for instance.
Theming might be more fun.

[Q] please help! sgh i757 apk's!

someone plese help me!
i've got a samsung galaxy s2 hd lte (sgh-i757m)...and i'm having problems finding much information for my phone on here...i know its older, but i just got it...i finally managed to root it using a galaxy s3 sgh i757 root....here is my problem...i'm sooooo confused!....when i rooted it i kept the stock rom that was on there... ics 4.0.4....and it had the dialer and the contacts apk that i love...the one you can slide left or right to call or text....since then i've updated to cyanogenmod 9, and love all the features of it, but it looks like it has the jellbean contacts apk...the real ugly white one that can't swipe left to right to text ect....I've found some downloads of the old contacts apk, but am having no luck installing them!....I've even tied restoring to the old stock rom, then copying the contacts apk into the downloads file, then re-load cm9 and move the contacts apk into the system/apps folder to replace the one's already in there but no luck.....this is soooooo frustrating!.....
.i have to admit i'm a bit of a noob...but both my stock rom and the cm9 show as 4.0.4, so should the contact apk not be transferable???? and why are they different in the first place!!!....I've enabled unknown sources to allow third party apps, and i've changed permissions in the apk to rw-r--r-- and replaced the contacts apk then reboot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache then reboot, and nothing....then i've tried to install apk.......and it shows installing, and the working blue bar, then just says "application not installed"...wtf???...i'm so frustrated!....is there something i'm missing with the owner/groups thing?....i just really want to make this happen....i've spent at least 12 hours on it already.....
please help!!!!!!
