Youngest app developer - General Topics

Guys I am 11 years old and I'm the youngest app developer in Europe! I currently develop for only one platform which is android. I am soon to receive a free noka lumia 920 from Microsoft I recently made this in 4 hours! Any of you guys like it? Its free! To view the app you have to search the google play store for "tree jump flamagames" android

Well how do you know your the youngest? I made my first app at the age of 12. And I am from South-Africa, nothing happens here, I am sure there are younger developers in Europe.

Your game is so unbelievably hardcore that I gnawed one of my arms off in frustration and then proceeded to run around my living room screaming obscenities at whatever inanimate objects were unfortunate enough to be in my path.

I am the youngest.

The game runs on the Adobe Air platform. I know because it prompted me to download Adobe Air since I didn't have it.

I am a ROM Developer for 4 Devices and I am only 15 years old !! I also run all the builds ALONE !!

Well done for creating apps, however what really is the point of this thread? it does seem to me like you just trying to get your post count up

Nice work, starting so young! I was writing code when I was your age as well, although they were BASIC and C games running on my Apple II and PC XT clone....with 320x200 4-color/2-bit CGA graphics. Programming can be great fun, just don't forget to go play outside.
I'd suggest making tree jump work in a landscape orientation, in order to give the player the ability to see farther ahead.
There's always going to be someone younger, don't worry about it. But watch out for making claims about being the world's youngest. In any case, that's impressive work for age 11.

Neat work coming from an 11 year old. Also not a bad way to get them downloads

I never said I was the worlds youngest I said I was Europes youngest! Which is true! Google "Caolan Fleming"

Now is simple to have all information that you need to develop apps. When i was 12, i read for the first time how to program games for J2ME, but i did not have the concept how to program. However, my first program was in Visual Basic at 15 years old at school, on the books and without internet because 10 years ago internet was a luxury in Italy. Now is a great time to lear how to program because internet has all information that you need for all.

Nice that you are writting an Android app in your age. But honestly how can you be sure you are the youngest in Europe. But nevermind
But seriously do you want an answer to your post. I'm coding already double the time you are old. So I give you a tip: become 14-16, go out and meet a nice girl:laugh: and make other things. Because I have the feeling you are already obsessed. And this is the wrong way

Go out and have some fun with your friends man.. Being obsessed by these things at such a young age can cost you valuable future friendships

Beta testers

Guys I don´t know if this has been posted before or its against the rules or something like that but I was wondering if this forums have a small comunity of beta testers to help out small studios developing applications.
My company Wonton Studios is a very small independent mobile app developer mainly focused into IOS and starting into Android. Since we can´t afford to buy several android test devices I thought that maybe some forumers would be able to test our games and provide some feedback. At the beginning of april we will have two games ready for testing in most popular resolutions in phones for the likes of the evo4 and tablets we will be supporting 7" and 10.1" Our goal is to support most popular devices.
Any input in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone is interested please pm me.
Thanx

Yeah, it is crazily terrible if you don't have 3 - 4 testing devices. I am a developer in HK. Users are moaning everyday for force close problems. Then 1 star rating. No one understand it is how hard to cover devices from HTC, Samsung, Sony, LG, etc for small players. This is android market.
We develop app related to gesture before, which is terribly machine dependent. Hope other guys will not fall into the same trap.

Isn't it against the forum rules, to let the community test things out and find all the bugs?
Just to find the tested app/game on the market for some $$?

Exactly, only developers understand the hassle my friend We will be using for now only tap controls and accelerometer in this two games until we test further on Android, we have all cover on IOS but Android is another beast simply because how un-standarize it is!! wich is a headache if you want to cover all devices.
I believe getting a group of beta testers is the way to go and earn valuable feedback while having fun, so thanx a lot everyone again Please pm me telling me your devices.

I don´t get what you mean beta tester applies to products that has not been released yet so of course you can´t charge $$ for them.
Beta testers report bugs that´s one thing, correcting them is the sole pourpose of the developer.

That's freakin ingenious! Make money rooting ppls phones on the backs of the devs who've done all the hard work to make it possible.
IMHO, do it yourself and save the money. I had no experience in phone modding before my old Aria and it was a piece of cake. The inspire was a lil more difficult but not painful.
If you have decent reading comprehension skills, you can do it, especially with 20+yrs in puter stuff.
Tx
Yeah taking money from the devs who put all the hard work in seems like assholery. Unless they donate their profits to the dev's which I doubt
Wow, $100 for rooting
I took my time reading, rooting my very first android phone (approximately 3~4 hrs, I'm slow ) I just donate to the DEV teams who really done great job for us.
Serious rip-off.
I used Bubby's method+video, and was rooted in 15 minutes.
Just take your time, and pause the video after each step, and you'll be fine.
I guess he's off to do the deed.
Take that money and donate it to the devs. Sure, you'll have to go through the process of rooting yourself, but the benefit vastly outweighs any inconvenience/learning curve.
Not only do you give the money to those who actually deserve it, the devs who dive into the depths of these phones so the rest of us don't have to (and the good conscience that comes with so doing), you also get a little more understanding of how your phone actually works.

Good for you. You can handle it. I've been doing the computer thing since the Apple ][, and the phone world was a little overwhelming for me as well. It's just new, not necessarily more difficult.

[APP] (In-development) Sketch 'Em, a "how to draw" app for Android

This app has been released and is now available on the Samsung Apps Store & Google Play
Hello! I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here goes.
I'm part of a team developing a niche app for the Note. It's a drawing tutor, that's supposed to teach users how to draw in different art styles. We're looking at anime/manga for initial release, with different "style packs" to be released in the future as downloadable content.
Here's a video of the app trailer (goes up to 1080p for full Galaxy Note screen, though cropped, resolution):
I'd just like to know, for the kind of people who might be interested by this kind of app, what kind of features might you like to see?
My team has a deadline to meet so we definitely cannot promise implementing every feature right away, but if the app does reasonably well, it's safe to say it'll get the long-term update treatment.
And yes, there is a very similar app out there called "How to Draw - Easy Art Lessons" in the Google Play store, but we hope to better execute the same idea.
I think it looks awesome !!! I Love drawing on the Note but Im really **** at it lol So having something like this would suit me down to the ground !!
Looking forward to it
Hey azzledazzle, thanks for that. I hope we can pull it off well.
KABAYAN
i will you all the success in this app. i too am a fan of drawing but drawing does not like me that much, i hope this app mends our differences, lol.
Haha, yeah that's half the reason I'm liking this project so much. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
I love drawing, drawing hates me! I hope this would help me though
Edit: Saw the video and it looks pretty neat. One feature I would like to request is.. I don't know how to put it but anyways.. I would like to select a image from the gallery, say a cute lil puppy, and be able to trace that picture on a blank sheet (or canvas??). So after I finish tracing, I could edit it a little, a few finishing touches here and there, and save it.

Hi guys, just letting you all know we've uploaded to the Samsung app store and it's currently undergoing review. Additionally, according to the Samsung Smart Apps Challenge rules as well as the general Samsung developer agreement, they don't require exclusivity for titles on their store. So we'll be uploading to Google Play afterwards, too.
Some tidbits about the current version:
Creator mode is done, in very rudimentary form. Users can make their own drawing tutorials in a step-by-step manner with up to 13 steps, upload the tutorial, and view/trace the tutorials of others in the community category.
Aside from anime characters, the app now has a dinosaurs category!

Yeah, I could've worded that better. My apologies.
Some trivia about the app if you care to know: it started out as a kind of maze game where you control this glowing lump of lava lamp goo by using the S-Pen, and depending on the amount of pressure you apply, the goo would grow or shrink in size, making it more difficult to traverse the maze if you're heavy-handed with the pen. But the S-Pen SDK doesn't really have any functionality for animations so it looked really stale.

It is not because it is not compatible hardware-wise -- I have it running on my 700, and while there's some lag on starting the game, it runs beautifully once in-game.
The only 100% legal option you have is pay for it and subsequently download it while on a supported device, rip the apk out with, for example, Total Commander or Titanium Backup, and transplant it to your 700.
Humbug.
Thanks though

That's like complaining a Windows game doesn't work on a Mac. You're asking for a game on a totally different operating system. Every scrap of logical reasoning could've told you that it might not work beforehand.

The main reason is that you, OP, actually phrased it like you were upset that your favorite game from another OS was not available on the 700, not that it was available for Android in general, but not for the 700 in particular. :silly:

Your thread started out regarding PvZ specifically (it's even in the title!). You can't take a crap down somebody's back because you phrase things clumsily. My advice (which I myself mostly follow): take your time posting something, and think over your phrasing. I try not go get personal, although I admit I'm only human and therefore can take only so much before I explode.
A correre e cagare ci si immerda i garretti. Freely translated: running and taking a crap at the same time will foul your heels. Ancient Italian (probably of Sumerian origins), but very applicable to many of life's situations, like forum posting, sex, cooking, chemistry (which is my educational background) and military operations (of which I have had a taste as well). I should have this tattooed somewhere. (That would be a first, by the way.)

Agreed. Don't forget your hypertension meds, love.
Can it work?
If everybody is done criticizing each other over how they've worded their posts, can we get back to the topic?
Is there a way to make this game work on a 1920x1080 Android device? There are more and more of them coming out...such as the S4 and HTC One. There must be a way to scale the display...?
Does anybody have a solution?

Well, if you'd read my first post (or took in the message instead of only feeling the 'tone'), you'd know the answer: yes, we have. It works beautifully, and has done so for almost a year on my tab. Thank you for reviving this old, decomposing thread.
There was an android humble bundle a while back that had plants vs zombies as part of the bundle. It runs well, scales nicely, and as previously mentioned it lags a little during cut scenes.

Well, if you'd read my first post (or took in the message instead of only feeling the 'tone'), you'd know the answer: yes, we have. It works beautifully, and has done so for almost a year on my tab. Thank you for reviving this old, decomposing thread.

I did read it...and rejected it. I'm not looking to build it myself...
I found avway to get it from the Amazon store using Unblock-US...i'm in Canada. it works but the graphics aren't great.
You're welcome for opening an old thread...anytime!

I doubt it, considering your second sentence:
I'm not looking to build it myself...

I never said you had to build it yourself. I said you can sideload it from one of so many other Android devices. Simple, and effective, requires pretty much no skill.

Taking an advance of your next and last sentence: you're welcome for taking the long way home. Feel free to ignore other's advice for having an easy and leisurely life, and risk screwing with your system in the process. There's always others on XDA who can help you out when you F up on that, too, right?

Ugh.

[APP][4.0+] Rate Her: A wingman in your pocket

A buddy of mine and I published an app a week or so ago in the Android market. It is actually Android exclusive for now (specially because Apple denied it...too risky for them apparently?!).
The app is called Rate Her. It is actually a "jokey" app if you will. The idea is for users (mostly guys) to use it when they are out and about at a bar or something, with friends. They will see a girl and then they pull out the app. They will rate this girl based on the 5 essential women traits (you can guess what they are...) from 1 to 10. Then they will get a "general" rating of what the girl might be based on their input. When they get this general rating though, they will be asked how much they have had to drink. How many beers, drinks or shots? Based on this then, a special algorithm by BroScience* calculates what the "real" rating of the girl would be if the user wasn't hammered. So it is...essentially...a wingman in your pocket.
If anyone has any idea on how to better maker this app, we would gladly appreciate any input or help!
For now, go here to check out the free version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.opencabinetlabs.rateherfree
And most of all...let us know what you think!
Thanks!
*Disclaimer: BroScience isn't actual science, it is completely (for the most part) made up and results may vary. We are not responsible if you hook up with someone you thought was an 8 but is actually a 3.
Testing.

Thanks! Looking forward to your thoughts.
The app is pretty neat. Easy to work UI. Can definitely see myself using this for a drinking game at the local bar!

and drinking game! I didn't even think about that! What kind of game did you have in mind? "Whoever rates her lower, takes a shot"? or what? Obviously for that one you have to expect guys to be honest haha or else they can just rate her pretty high for the heck of it....
Thanks for checking it out!
Each person rates one part. And if the number is higher than 7, everyone takes a shot.

Haha that is brilliant. I definitely have to tell others about that and try it out myself. You, sir, are a genius.
I wonder what other games could be made out of it. Somehow to punish just one person as well. I am liking this!
I agree with stkfigure, the UI is pretty simple and easy to use. I like it, I definitely see myself using it at the bars and even more with the game he suggested. Sounds like a lot of people will get drunk pretty quickly...ha!
I am curious, how long did it take you to develop it?

Well it was 2 of us. I personally developed the iOS version while my buddy developed the Android version. I worked on the iOS version around 2 years ago, and it took me like a week to get the "basics" of it done" ...but then design and everything took a few days... but then I let it sit there for 2 years until a few months ago. Then we re-did the whole thing, design wise specifically, and it took us "real time wise" like 3 months...but actual work wasn't more than a week or two between the two apps. So I would say in total...maybe 2 weeks of actual work, since we did it on our spare time.
Hope that answered your question and thanks for checking it out!

It does! Thank you for answering! I actually tried it last night after drinking for a little while, I rated a girl an 8.2 (I think that's what it was) and it turned out to be like a 5.8 ..yeah...I was a little plastered! Made me think to myself "yep, not doing it" and gave me a good laugh. My buddies asked me why and I explained, they laughed too and wanted to download it but they both had iPhone's. Sucks for them!

haha that's quite the drop man, I am glad it helped you a little.
And yeah, it sucks we haven't been able to release it for iPhone as well, definitely some market there as well can't deny that. But that's one of the perks of developing for Android, because trust me...trying to get Apple to approve it has been one heck of a pain.
Again, thanks a lot for using it. We appreciate it! Report back with any on the field usage if you have any more funny stories to tell us about!
