I have an HTC Evo with with a custom rom (CM7 7.0.2). My SD Card became full, so I figured I would delete some nandroid backups. I went ahead and did this (deleted a couple gigs worth). After doing that, my disk usage didn't seem to change - I still had a full SD card. After tinkering and cleaning some more, I still was showing a full SD card. I went ahead and partitioned. After that it still seems as though when I delete things to free up space, my disk usage stats still remain the same. Am I missing something?
Connect phone to computer with usb cable, set mount as disk drive, erase what u don't need, empty recycle bin.
Also try to mount and unmount sdcard to check free space.
LaD
You may need to reboot to get new info. Are you checking in Settings?

I went ahead and partitioned my SD card. This fixed the problem. Thanks for suggestions.
yeah.. i agree
Stiill happening...
I originally posted this thread about 5-6 months ago. After some time has passed by, I am having the same issue again... If I delete items from my SD card, it does not register the freed space. I can reboot, remount, etc. and whether I go to Settings or Titanium or Computer, it shows the same amount of storage being used. The weird part is that my SD card only has a gig on it (not 5). The only way to fix this is to partition... This is really irritating. Any thoughts?
EDIT: Okay, I went ahead and emptied the trash and everything seems to be fine.
You can also try SD Maid to free up space.
I don't know how it works on android, but when you remove stuff in GNU/Linux/unices it can take a minute or two to once again get registered as available storage.
Then just to rule out the obvious, you mentioned that you partitioned the drive, are you sure you are looking at the right drive for the available space? I would recommend going to a terminal and delete the stuff you want gone and then use the df command to see available space. I think it's in BusyBox I am not sure though but it should be. Good luck

Why is it whenever I plug in\out phone, the home screen is blank, then 10-20 seconds later all the icons\widgets appear?
Also, related I assume, when I reboot, all the icons come up as the green system standard icon, then the actual icon is populated about 3-5 minutes after. The phone can't seriously be THAT slow can it?
I have a feeling it's based on the apps on the internal vs external SD card, but still, this is 2011, why do they take so long to populate?
Thanks!
This is a question I have had. I have noticed it takes several minutes to populate my Apps in app drawer.

Super annoying when I just want to get loaded back up and run an app and can't because it's not showing in the apps listing yet and on the main screen it's showing as a default system icon. Ugh :-(
Where it gtg to solve my problems?!?!
After unplugging your phone from a PC, the internal and external SD cards do a rescan.
It can take a while, especially depending on the size of your external card.
I suggest moving ALL of your apps back to the phone and off the SD card. This helps a bit. Unless you have a trillion apps, there's not much point putting apps on the SD card anymore. That was for old android phones that had little to no internal storage space for apps.

What's the best way to move them from external to internal with ease? Then how do I tell my phone to install to internal SD by default?

First of all, this isn't a matter of installing to the internal SD as opposed to the external SD. I recommend installing to the 2GB "Internal phone storage".
If you look under
Code:
Settings > SD card and phone storage
you'll see what I mean.
The internal phone storage never gets unmounted.
Go to:
Code:
Settings > Manage applications > On SD card
Click each app and the tap the "Move to phone button"
You could get the app SDMove which may help you manage your apps a bit easier. I'm sure there are dozens of other similar (maybe better) apps, too.
The only apps I install to the SD card are games. I really don't care if a game isn't available the second I unplug my phone from the PC.
I have no clue how to set everything to install to phone by default instead of some apps defaulting to SD. I believe it's something internal to the individual app installer itself.

When I connect to my Windows 7 64 machine, my internal SD shows up so does my external, however the external says insert disk. Is there a solution for this?

I have a pre-release version and the build that was on it had some wonky driver or something - the SD card reader didn't work at all and I would get that same message when I plugged it in. A few weeks before the phone went retail they sent out an update that only changed 1 file and BOOM, it works now.
What is your build number?

Try puting outing your micro sd in a sd card adapter and see if your coomputer will read it. Possibly damaged sd card
Had me concerned, followed your suggestion, since I moved directly from captivate into skyrocket. The minute I put in adapter computer read with no issues. Only thing I see is less than 10% available

Either you have done something to the phone or you have a defective unit. When you connect by USB, the connection notification would ask you if you want to connect your internal storage or not. If you choose to do so, then you will bet autoplay for two disks. So, if you install a weird built, you may just want to return to the original condition and move on from there.
The phone itself reads the card, its when I connect to my laptop that the contents of that card do not show up. It says insert drive. Shows drive letter, but thinks there's no media

if you use the stock Mount USB, from the status drop down, it should work
if not, then you might want to format your SD card to make it readable
if you use 3rd party Dual Mount or any USB mount widget, you will get the scenario you described in the opening message
Where's my storage??
I am seriously confused. I recently tried to install a 64 GB micro sd in my Skyrocket. When I pout it in the phone said it needed to be formatted. So, I let it format. Then, if I would go to settings it would show a slightly less than 60 GB external storage card was mounted. So when I tried to use file manager or link2sd, I don't see anything that looks like a 60 GB resource. So after much futzing around I removed it and installed a 32 GB microsd. Settings sees it as slightly less than a 30 GB sd card. Again, file manager and link2sd show nothing close to this. In fact, if I go to storage info in link2sd, it says the SD card has a total of 11.25GB, of which 11.2 GB is free. So, how do I straighten this out so I can use the full amount of my micro sd card for storing mp3 content?

Is this class 10? These are common symptoms with SOME manufacturer's of class 10 cards.
In this post, patriot acknowledges minor issues on class 10:

I AM COPYING FROM THERE:

"We have found that there is an industry wide compatibility problem with the new Android based and Windows 7 phones working with 32GB class 10 micro SD cards. We have seen issues with the Samsung Focus, Motorola Driod/X, HTC Evo 4g. We are currently working on a solution for this compatibility issue. Google and Microsoft have stated that there are known compatibility issues with 32GB class 10 micro SD cards and are working on a solution as well.
We have found a fix that works in many cases, where you format the card in a Windows based PC, with FAT32, allocation size 32kb, and full format. This is not an official fix, but troubleshooting steps that has worked in many cases, we are still working on a permanent solution for this issue."
TomTommy, regardless of the date of the post prior to mine, I still have the issue. I see nothing in the thread that resolves my issue, but the thread appears to revolve around a part of my issue. So, here I am. Do you think I might find an answer to my issue in another thread?

Chappatti, my card is class 6, not class 10. IN any case, I have tried formatting it in a Windows PC to the size it is supposed to be, but the results are the same. The settings measurment of the card shows the right value, but when I try to browse using link2sd or file manager I get the goofy readings.
Hi after having to switch my phone off, when I turned it on again it appears that all the apps I moved to the SD card are no longer there. I have just spent some time downloading them from the market again.
Question is why has this happened and how do I stop it from happening again
Thanks in advance
Solution
Hi Nexus.
I think you'll find that the apps still exist, they're just fragmented on the SD
card. This has happened to me plenty of times.
I've found it's only apps that are installed on the SD card and it's never
happened with apps on the phone's internal ROM.
A good way to check is to go into: Settings- Applications- Manage applications-
then tap the SD card tab. That list shows all of your apps installed on the SD
card. I found that when apps here got fragmented/corrupt they didn't show their
original app icon. Instead they showed the stock android app icon. This is a good
way to tell if the missing apps in question are still there but are just fragmented.
The way to solve this, the way that's worked for me, is to plug the phone into a
pc and mount the SD card as a disk. Then on the PC access the SD card via
explorer and right click- properties- tools- then click de-fragment.
This may take up to 30 mins as it's not as fast as a HDD.
From using this technique my apps have always returned and I can use them
with no problems again.
I've also noticed that this issue only happens if I restart or turn the phone off. I
don't understand what is corrupting the apps as the SD card is mounted
correctly and is the one supplied as standard.
I hope I've helped, and I guess this will save you from re-downloading all of your
apps again.
I'm happy to hear anyone's thoughts/suggestions onto why this is actually
happening in the first place too.
Cheers, Dms
Hi thanks so much for the answer. This has been bugging me for ages and even though I have been searching I have not had any joy solving it until your reply.
As you said it only seems to happen to apps on the sd card, and I would like to know why they are not "persistent" There must be a developer who understands the Android system who can explain why this happens and what you can do to make apps you have on your sd card permanent.
As you said it only happens to me when I re start my phone.
Thanks again for the answer
Hi. It's no problem. Yes I havn't seen anything about this issue being mentioned either.
I'd like to know what's causing it. Whether it's a hardware fault or something in the software.
It's a real pain having to hook it up to my pc to sort it out. Especially when I'm away from a pc, I can't use half of my apps.

I am absolutely and completely stumped in what I should do and can do.
My phone has that restriction where the SD card is located in a different folder and you cannot install apps to it. That frustrated me, so I searched for a fix. I came across one that allows me to change where to sd card it mounted to fix just that.
Of course because I'm a giant boob I didn't backup before, and to my horror I get a bazillion crash errors on restart, the main one not being able to save data that isn't internal. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix it, but It did not.
I suppose I should add my phone is of course rooted, and that I do understand the basics of flashing my phone (but like nothing exists for this phone). I also apologize for this possibly being in the wrong forum, but I'm certain one doesn't exist.
Tl;Dr: tried to fix sd card limitations, broke mounting, atleast I think.
