[Q] What's the point of having so much internal memory space? - General Questions and Answers

For phones like the S3, you can get them with up to 64 GB internal phone storage, what's the point?
You can't transfer your songs or movies from your SD card to your phone, so that means the internal memory can only store apps, and who has 64 GB of apps?
Isn't 1GB big enough for all your apps?
Or am I missing something here?

... I have over 1Gb of apps and I don't even have any particularly big ones on there... and I didn't think I had many, either. I have been considering a nearly 1Gb game app for my tablet, and I'm sure some people have mental fortitude to play such games on their phones (I like the bigger screen, can't concentrate on the phone sized screen for really detailed games).
Why couldn't you put music and movies on the internal storage ? Kies will try to put music on internal by default - I actually had to move to the external SD after transferring because I didn't realise that. I'm sure I could do the file transfer in the opposite direction as well and cut and paste from external to internal.

I think ur misunderstood by 64GB in S3...its Internal USB storage (in-built memory card) not phone memory.
I have a 32GB Galaxy S2 model..it doesn't mean that it has 32GB phone memory..lol

This is internal but accessable as storage space for films etc.
On many new devices (like nexus4/7/10) everything is kept on one partition so the internal memory is for apps and files

Wait, so you're saying that I can transfer files from my computer/sd card to the internal storage?
How?

Yeah, I meant internal storage, as in space, and not RAM, if that's what you mean.
Unless you're saying there's the internal storage + internal sd card + external sd card?

You can drag and drop or use Kies/Kies Air or any other such program. I mean, they're not going to mandate you buy an external SD card in order to store media, that would be silly.

I've installed Kies, and it does exactly what Windows Explorer can do. It syncs, backups etc. files on your SD CARD, I can't find any option to browse my PHONE STORAGE, like you said it could.

So which one is the one you can buy in stores?
Where's the internal memory card located?
I've got a Galaxy Ace.

Galaxy ace doesn't have it.
Models like Galaxy s, S advance, S duos, S2, S3, Note...and others have it inbuilt.
You can't remove nor expand the internal SD card.
There is a slot for external card too like in galaxy ace....external SD cards are available for sales everywhere.

SD CARDS ARE NOT GOOD!
having internal storage is much better then having SD storage, reason being is the phones processor has process stuff much quicker if its on the internal memory. When stuff is stored on an SD card the access time is always greater. Also theat is not true you can store your mvoies videos and pictures on the interal memory.(I have an S3 and i know this works)

So you can transfer files from your computer to your internal or external sd card, or from your internal card to external card or vice versa, but you can't transfer to your phone memory?

How do I store movies/songs on my internal storage?

Yup..u got it right.
U can't transfer to internal memory (phone memory) but u can transfer to Internal Storage (inbuilt SD card) and External storage.

I don't know how they wire these phones up, but I can tell you that the storage memory that is actually inbuilt to the phone will be faster than anything you plug in. SD Cards usually take more time for transfers/reads than internal memory. Hence, people go for more internal memory nowadays rather than use an SD card to store their crap on.

it is always better to have a hard-soldered memory chip for faster processing .

many applications wont install to an SD, one of them being Facebook!

Captivate Internal SD vs. Epic 4G Internal Storage?

I just read a piece on Boy Genius Report in regards to the differences between the Captivate/Vibrant and the Epic. The blogger states the following
"Samsung’s TouchWiz UI doesn’t feel as mature as Sense. This seems blatantly obvious in the Captivate and Vibrant but is much less noticeable in the EPIC 4G. The device feels much faster than the Captivate or Vibrant and having social network integration, power controls, and a host of widgets actually becomes more useful instead of an annoyance."
He then proceeds to make presumptions about the ROM in the captivate/Vibrant being SD cards and the ROM inside the Epic being a much Faster NAND variant.
"We’re assuming the phone uses NAND Flash as the internal memory medium. On the Captivate if you navigate to Settings >SD Card and phones storage you see “External SD Card” and “Internal SD Card” listed. On the EPIC you see “External SD Card” and “Internal Phone storage.” We’ve reached out to Sprint for clarification and will update this article if they respond with a definitive answer."
I know the Epic isn't out yet, but does anyone have some better insight into this?
Original piece is here
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/08/18/your-epic-4g-questions-answered/
I believe that the Epic 4G does not have as much internal storage space as the captivate (or vibrant). Standard Galaxy S phones have 16 GB of internal storage, of which about 2GB is reserved for apps and the OS. I think the Galaxy S Pro (Epic 4G) has substantially less. I believe that either the engadget or gizmodo review listed the phone as having on 400MB available for app storage, suggesting less than 1GB of internal storage for OS and apps. To compensate, the Epic is sold with a 16GB micro-sd card.
I'm afraid I don't know anything about the read/write speeds for the internal storage on both devices, or if the two phones have different types of memory. But my captivate lists 3 different types of memory in it's "SD card and phone storage menu": SD, internal SD and internal phone storage. It sounds like the Epic just don't have any 'internal sd' storage capacity at all, so it only shows 'SD' and 'internal phone storage.'

You are correct about the internal storage on the Epic. Thanks for pointing out that there is indeed a third storage type on the captivate, I've never scrolled past the internal SD part of the menu.
This leads me to believe that BGR really has no clue of what theyre talking about.
I read somewhere that despite the 16gb storage in teh captive, there is only about 13gb left from the stock rom, is that correct?
a quick question, I thought if the phone comes with 16gb, you can use all of the 16 gb for apps and such, am I mistaken with this? I was under the impression that the whole 16gb is available for everything but you can also add more via SD.

Even though the phone says it's 16gb, you only get to use about 13 gig of that. You can add up to a 32gb micro SD card to it though. It's like that with most if not all phones. iPhone is done in a similar way. The OS takes up space.
YEAH, I understand that the phone OS takes up space. But the whole 13GB that's free can be used for apps and such right? WinMo are a bit different I think the ROM is for OS and apps.
I saw a few android based phone has only 1GB internal memory (Sony Xperia) which is quite low. Does that mean that the maximum number of apps you can install is 1GB? Or that you can install apps on the SD
If only Samsung would realize that rfs fails and they should use Ext4 for data storage :\

Perhaps this is why the Epic 4G boots up so quickly.

storage question

Coming from the HTC Mytouch 4g i was under the impression i was upgrading from 1gb of storage(on the mt4g) to about 8gb of storage(g2x). I come to realize that in reality theres only about 1.5 gb of system storage and the other 5-6gb's acts like a secondary external sdcard...
I think that is soo stupid, i already have a 16gb class 6 sdcard and was needing the 8gb of internal just for apps/games(i have over 3+gb's of apps and games so don't even say why isn't 1.5gb of internal not enough)
Is there a mod or script that will allow the 5gb to be used as the system storage and the other 1.5 can be used as external sdcard storage? Or even a hack that would make my 16gb sdcard the main storage for my g2x?

The stock ROM allows you to move many of your apps to the internal "sd" card. Just go into manage applications and click on SD card and move the ones you want to the sd card. This will free up space in the 1.5gb storage area. Almost all custom roms have an even more versatile APP2SD capability.

[Q] Memory layout?

OK, so I knew this was limited to the internal 16GB, but now I'm reading that it is partitioned so that 4GB is system that I'll never see, 2GB is apps, and 10GB is media storage.
Is the 2GB the same as the internal storage on other Androids, and the 10GB same as an external SD card, so the 10GB has the same external SD limitations? I'm assuming that when an app has an option to store things on external SD I should take advantage of it to preserve the 2GB?
Finally, what are the paths for the different partitions (I'm on a non rooted stock TmoUS)?
Thanks!
THe main thing I'm wondering about is why the hell it's a 4gb system partition. That is HUGE!
htc sensation xe has the same 4 gb internal memory from which the user has only 1 gb for apps
so...only HTC knows the answer

[Q] Storage space

Just a quick question before I buy my Note 10.1..
I would want to have the 32GB version, but it's really hard to find around here while the 16GBG is available everywhere.. If I buy the 16GB and pop a 64GB SD card in it, can I use this for apps and all, specially the bigger games and such?

Well, it depends on the game. Most games which data file is downloaded by Google Play would be saved in your SDCARD partition. The same goes to most games which download its files upon first start up. So far, I only see Gameloft's Modern Combat 3 and Nova 3 downloaded their data files into EXTERNAL_SD\Android\Data. However newer Gameloft's games now used OBB files, which are saved in SDCARD\Android\OBB.
You could however root your device and write a script to bind folders from your external sd into sdcard, or use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857070.

Ok, thanks. It looks like I'll be forced to get the 16 GB if I want to avoid ordering it. Local stores dont have the 32GB. Is it possible to remap the sd card so the internal is on external_sd and the external is on sdcard? Or would that break stuff?
there is a app called bind directory that is very easy to use and will move the obb files to a directory on your external card. This i used on the nexus 7 before i sent it back because of Very poor build quality... Just get a class 10 name brand sd card.. some games will not run off the slower or generic cards.. Mine is a Patriot card.

+1 I currently use Directory Bind, 16gb Note + 32gb sd card. Have mapped app data folders to external storage, so internal storge is barely used. You will need root though.

Thanks! I don't mind rooting the Note and Directory Bind sounds like it would do exactly what I want to do.. I assume Directory Bind would work fine with 64 GB cards as well? I've seen people having success in inserting 64 GB SD cards in the Note.. Planning to use Sandisk SD card.. I only trust Sandisk and Kingston on SD cards.

64 gb card should be fine. I'm planning on buying 64 gb card myself soon, with all the large games I have purchased room is getting a little crowded on the 32 gb card I have.

The 32GB tablet is a gigantic price gouge, considering a 16GB MicroSD only costs around $15.
I don't think I could respect myself if I paid an extra $120 or whatever for it.
That said, apps and games that store data on your "SD card" will be using the internal storage, not your actual MicroSD card. In some apps you can configure the location for saving data however.
The bulk of my storage is actually videos and music, which of course there's no problem having on the external MicroSD card. That's just me though.

Lollipop and microSD card

So i haven't upgraded yet to Lollipop, mainly because of memory issues.
I saw that in Lollipop you can transfer apps to microSD, so i was thinking of buying this one to replace my paltry class 4 16 mSD. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Class-UHS-1-SF32UX-TQ/dp/B007M4XQSK
i play a lot on my phone, so do you think i will encounter any performance issues if i transfer my games from internal memory to SD?
Playing games from microSD card shouldn't be a problem at all. Especially an UHS class microSD
But... the link you posted refers to SD card, not microSD, you won't be able to put in your phone
http://www.emag.ro/card-de-memorie-sony-micro-sdhc-32-gb-class-10-adaptor-sd-sr32uxa/pd/D9M2RBBBM/ -> this actually the one. i searched that one amazon for some reviews but in the rush i didnt see it wasnt microSD.
do microSD cards still come in FAT32 by default or can i reformat them to NTFS/exFAT?

You can move only apk to microsd, not the data or obb folder, so a memory card is not so useful.
