I just read on reddit that the Verizon GS3 does NOT have Gorilla Glass.
Anyone know the truth?

Yes it does, Gorilla glass 2 to be precise. I personally think it sucks, I had my first scratch a week into owning the device
Now there will be Gorilla Glass 3 (soon).
Gorilla glass 3 looks really promising!

Whatever you call it. It is tempered glass. People get too worked up about brand names rather then quality.
The glass its self has a hardness level of about 7. But the film they put on the outermost layer(part you touch) has a hardness lever of 9. Correct me if I'm wrong. But 9 out of 10 is not perfection.
Always use a screen protector.
A heads up that I have noticed is that the quartz in sand does a fantastic job of scratching the screen. So stay off the beach. Haha.

Even though it doesn't have gorilla glass, the screen seems to be scratch resistant. I know because I don't use a screen protector.

Same here, I don't use a screen protector and don't think I need one at this point. I've had my phone for months now, and its been through situations where scratches should be inevitable. The case has a few nicks around the edges, but there is only 1 tiny tiny hairline scratch going across the home button. Not noticeable, I only noticed it when looking at the slight wave of the glass right next to the lamp.

Even though it suppose to be scratch proof, i would still recommend a screen protector.
For who are you saving the screen? To the next owner? Doesn't it look ugly with the screen protector? I have never understand these. I use my phones usually 6-12months. I have got twice a tiny, tiny hair scratch to the screen. One was Gorilla glass (I think it's soooo over hyped), other one just scratch resistant. For my htc hero I never got a scratch in 6 months... I wonder how you treat your phones...
So no I don't use a screen protector, not after Nokia 5800XM which had a plastic screen. And even with that I got bored to the protector and rip it off after few week...

Only diamond is scratch proof (except by other diamonds). I don't know where you guys get this "gorilla glass is a magical unscratchable substance" from.
Science lesson: Aluminosilicate glass (gorilla glass) with mohs hardness of 7 is more than most metals used in keys and knives but there are many minerals with a hardness above that. Silicon dioxide is 7, aluminum molecules can be up to 9! These two types of molecules make up most of what you see in dirt and sand and since they have a higher hardness can scratch your phone.

I'm really wondering about this now. I couldn't find on Samsung's or Corning's website where it specifically mentions that the Skyrocket has Gorilla Glass. The Corning website does feature the GSII. I emailed Corning with the question. Hopefully they will respond.
I've read at least 1 review that mentioned the Skyrocket did not have it. I've read several that said it did.
It mentions the Galaxy S II line of specific models. Why do you think the skyrocket would not have it? It is of the Galaxy S II line. The Galaxy S models have it. Saw a post on another website where someone called Samsung technical support and they confirmed the SR does have Gorilla Glass. Having said that, it is not scratch proof.
"I actually just called Samsung as I am looking to buy this phone and wanted to know myself. The mobile device section said that it IS indeed Gorilla Glass. Not sure why the reviewer on Youtube said it's not. Having said that, I don't believe the stuff is bullet proof. It can obviously scratch if you try. I wouldnt be putting it in my pocket with keys."

I know what isn't scratch proof. The pos back cover. I literally put it my loose work pocket with my Casio work phone by mistake for all of 5 minutes, when I pulled the skyrocket out the back cover was literally covered with scratches. The front I'm not sure about but the back is a joke.

Aluminosilicate glass makes me think of Star Trek IV, and the clear aluminum recipe Scotty traded for plexiglass.

eBay Screen protector dude for next time.
The i727 is one of Samsung 1st phone to use fortified glass like the Galaxy Nexus..
People don't realize that Samsung can make their own Gorilla Glass in the New SamsungCorning.com Joint Venture. Samsung is authorized under a full license to make Gorilla Glass for everything from big screen tv's to mobiles. So why did they choose to use their own new Fortified glass? Because cost less and it's BETTER! .....especially if Samsung used their graphene technology coupled with their far superior Polymer Polyimide plastic base (same ingredients as Bullet Proof Plastic), that are both flexible and far more durable than any kind of glass! .....even Bullet Proof Glass!!!!

Hi! I am strongly considering the Skyrocket but I've always enjoyed the extra protection of Gorilla Glass screens. Any reason why they decided on glass screens for this model? And how is the screen holding up from day to day wear?
Thanks...
I'm confused by your post, are you asking why they decided on gorilla glass on this model? Cause you clearly said that you "enjoyed the extra protection of Gorilla Glass". If you want to know does it have gorilla glass, yes it does. And its holding up very well I use mine with no screen protector. Third phone i've had with Gorilla Glass and havent scratched one yet. Not to say that they cant be scratched, I just havent scratched one of mine.

Sorry for the confusion. I've read a few reviews that this phone does NOT have Gorilla Glass, so that is why I asked. So if you say it does, then I am sold on it.
This is where I saw one of the reviews that said no Gorilla Glass and it shows scratches (around the 1:35 mark):

From all the reviews I've read, PhoneArena is the ONLY publication that has said the SR doesn't have Gorilla Glass. It actually does. They probably just got a bad sample or something.
Thanks for all of the info...strongly considering this phone but have been tempted to try Windows Phone 7, in the form of HTC Titan too...
Some people seem to be confused about Gorilla glass too. From my understanding gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. So you still can end up scratching it.

Gorilla Glass... scratches.
It's just difficult to break.
Just ordered two of 'em!
I think that video has been debunked. I have read somewhere that they actually scratched the screen themselves before putting it on the ground. Some of the comments for the video you linked specifically points out things like "something in his left hand" and "swiping his hand across the screen before sliding it on the ground".
Now, I'm not saying gorilla glass is indestructible, I think most people are aware that gorilla glass CAN be scratched under certain circumstances but I don't think it's as easy as they portray in that video.

I cant find anything online that confirms it does or doesn't. I just upgraded my phones on my Tmo Family plan, 2 of them being the SGS Blaze since my parents don't want the latest and greatest. They are asking if they need a screen protector or not.
Definitely need screen protectors. Its plastic.
I can't confirm. But I'm pretty sure this screen is not plastic. I'm not using a protector only a case, so far screen in great shape....
And sad that I consider this the latest and greatest compared to my old phone
And you getting it for your parents as not greatest Dx aha

Actually, it is glass. Can't confirm if it is Gorilla or not, but its quite durable. Not a single scratch on the glass after a few months of being pocketed near-daily with the occasional coin or keys.
Well mine has scratches, so get a screen protector.

I bought a screen protector and a case for mine. Whether it has gorilla glass or not I'm clumsy and not taking any chances... . Case and protector only cost me about $8 total on Amazon. Only downside to case is it does add a bit of bulk to this sleek phone (probably tripled it's width).

Gorilla glass = ("monkey" glass + "chimpanzee" glass)/2
Screen cracked
Hi,
I managed to break the glass of my Blaze yesterday, phone slipped out of my pocket while I was sitting on a concrete slab.
The fall was maybe 10cm / 4", but today I noticed a crack from side to side across the glass.
Fortunately the display and the touch digitizer are not affected, but I'm afraid the crack might get wider over time...
However: no scratches
Gorilla Glass is a brand name made by Corning.
The Blaze does not have that brand of glass (as seen here):
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/full-products-list
It does seem very durable though so it would appear that it has a competing company's version of Gorilla Glass on it.

Welcome to the SGS4 community. I too also came from the SGS to this.
Yes, I do recommend a screen protector for this. Gorilla glass 3 isn't necessarily more scratch resistant than the 1st version.
SGN3 forums also reported scratches on the screen caused by the official Samsung S - view cover itself.
Ty is the gorila glass 3 supposed to be stronger than sg 1 gorila glass 1?

About tempered glass screen protector there is some thatv cost 8-10$ on ebay and some 20 to 40$ because they have a brand I saw a post saying there is no differnce and we are pay extrA 20$ just for the brand name l.... is it true?

I would
I would agree you should get one I got the Zagg invishield for both my SGS3 and my S4 and I recently dropped my S4 face down onto blacktop from about 5 feet by accident of course and not only did the screen not shatter but there wasn't even a chip or anything. They aren't that expensive either for the basic versions which work just fine.
I like that case however if you go into best buy or use amazon you can get a black Otter box commuter for 21.90 cents plus tax because they match amazon direct. As for the screen protector it is a must I have a zagg hd in mine which came free when the best buy messed up applying the one that came with the Otterbox. Then I got an xtreme guard back film for when I decide to go naked.

I've had the S1, S2, photon, and S4. All have gorilla glass. Never used a screen protector. I'm a maintenance man, I carry a knife and about 50 keys daily in my pocket. Screen still looks flawless. Just my opinion

Not necessarily. You should also take into account that the bizels and glass are getting thinner.
With the SGS, I have had many accidents with it. The biggest one was dropping it 2 stories to the pavement when I was texting and looking out the window. We watched a scary movie that night before the incident occured. One of my friends scared me on Halloweens day and with that fright, I jumped and my SGS slipped out of my hands onto the wooden windows trip which we slightly angled and it fell. When I retrieved it, it was face down.
The damages were: dents and chipping of paint from the bizel plus a few scuff marks.
One of my friend has a cracked S4 screen from being in his pocket.
I STRONGLY advice a screen protector and a case that protects the bizel and sides.
With that being said, I don't recommend a plastic screen protector as it scratches from dust and just about anything it comes in contact with.
It also distorts the 1080p screen.
I would suggest a tempered glass screen protector as it is more resistant to scratches and generally only anything with a hardness of sand and above will leave marks on it.
